DESCRIPTION
There are literally thousands of substances, both natural and synthetic, that can cause poisoning. Many of these are present in everyday items and products, including drugs, cleaning products, pesticides, paints and varnishes, hobby and art supplies, batteries, cosmetics, and house plants. Some are poisonous only if ingested; others can cause problems if inhaled or absorbed through the skin or eyes.
Most cases of accidental poisoning involve young children, especially children under the age of five. Young children are very curious, and their preferred method of exploring often involves putting things into their mouths. However, there are also many cases of poisoning every year among elderly people and hospital patients (most commonly the result of over-medication or drug mix-ups), as well as adolescents, who may experiment with the ingestion of toxic substances, including recreational drugs. Other causes of poisoning include exposure to environmental pollutants and toxic substances used in the workplace. Toxins in food can also cause poisoning.

RECOMMENDATIONS
If you suspect that you or another person have been poisoned, call your local Poison Control Center and follow their directions. The appropriate measures to take depend on the toxin involved and the method of ingestion. The professionals who staff these centers will be able to tell you what to do.
Keep the telephone number of your local Poison Control Center posted near your telephone (see below for updated list). This is particularly important if you have children. Also, keep a bottle of syrup of ipecac on hand at all times. This can be purchased at any local pharmacy or drug store. However, do not use the syrup of ipecac unless specifically directed to do so by a health care provider or your Poison Control Center. Syrup of ipecac will cause the vomiting when taken and some poisonous substances should not treated in this manner. For some poisonous substances, it is not advisable to take anything by mouth - for example if the poison contains an acid that will create more internal burning. If advised to do so by the Poison Control Center, take 5 charcoal tablets immediately. This will help to absorb the poison. Do not use charcoal tablets that are not made for internal use. So, again, be sure to check with Poison Control before administering any first aid measures.
If you suspect that you or another have been poisoned, call your local Poison Control Center and follow their directions. The appropriate measures to take depend on the toxin involved and the method of ingestion. The professionals who staff these centers will be able to tell you what to do.
If you are directed to go to the nearest hospital emergency room, take the container of the suspected poison with you, if possible. This can help medical personnel to deal with the situation and save precious time.
ACTIVATED CHARCOAL INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION: Charcoal is an absorbent. It absorbs inorganic and toxic matter, therefore its uses are diverse. Charcoal is used in water filtration systems and Charcoal powder is used as an antidote for poison. It is an extremely effective remedy for almost all types of poisonings such as Tylenol, barbiturates, chemicals, snake bite, etc. It is important to note that just because something has Charcoal in it does not mean it will be safe to ingest though. The type of Charcoal used for medicinal and other absorbent uses is activated. Charcoal briquettes used in grilling; however, are not digestible and could make you ill.
CHARCOAL USES & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE: Activated Charcoal is a good standard item for every medicine chest. Charcoal works well on bee and ant stings and snake bites, and can help draw out the infection associated with the flu. Charcoal also works well in cases of the brown recluse spider bite if caught in enough time. A brown recluse spider bite causes a large portion of flesh to die and fall off, and it can even cause gangrene and other complications. Charcoal also works in treating poison ivy and poison oak, especially when combined with French Green Clay, and is used in treating diarrhea and vomiting caused by food poisoning or the flu. Charcoal has been used with success in cases of uterine infection as well.
CHARCOAL DOSAGE INFORMATION: Charcoal comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For best results, read and follow product label directions.
CHARCOAL SAFETY & INTERACTION: Activated Charcoal absorbs material and can therefore cause problems with any medicine you may be taking by reducing how much gets absorbed by your body; which could be life threatening. Some people have experienced side effects such as breathing problems or tightness in your throat or chest, chest pain, or skin hives, rash, and itchy or swollen skin while taking Charcoal. If you experience any of those symptoms, discontinue using and talk with your health care provider to ensure that there is no other reason for having those symptoms. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is best to consult with your health care provider or midwife before using Charcoal for the treatment of your condition.

IPECAC INFORMATION
IPECAC GENERAL INFORMATION: Ipecac (Cephaelis ipecacuanha / Ipecac Shrub) is a small shrub with a slender stem that grows up to 1 foot high. It flourishes in the forests of Amazonian Brazil and Bolivia where they have annual rains in excess of 70 inches. Ipecac has sparse oblong leaves, small white flowers, and purple-black berries. Ipecac is made from the dried rootstock. The Grand Dauphin, son a France's Louis XIV, was dying of a severe and prolonged case of dysentery and was cured with Ipecac. In India and Pakistan it was used against serious parasitic diseases, including billharziasis, which is caused by flatworm. Ipecac has expectorant and strongly emetic properties.
IPECAC USES & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE: Today, Ipecac is still used in conventional and herbal medicines. In very small doses, it can by given by mouth as part of a syrup for clearing congested coughs and is commonly found in many cough medicines used for the treatment of bronchitis and whooping cough. Ipecac syrup is mainly used to induce vomiting, especially in people who have swallowed certain poisons. It is such a strong emetic that even moderate doses will stimulate vomiting until the stomach is cleared. Because of that, it works very well in treating drug overdose. Ipecac is also still used for amebic dysentery.
IPECAC DOSAGE INFORMATION: Ipecac usually comes in syrup form and can be an ingredient in other products. For bronchial conditions Ipecac combines well with white horehound, coltsfoot and grindelia. In amoebic dysentery ipecac may be used with American cranes bill or echinacea. It is best to consult with your health care provider anytime Ipecac is needed as a treatment.
IPECAC SAFETY & INTERACTION: Research has shown that cephaeline, the emetic agent in Ipecac, is itself a powerful irritant that can cause poisoning, therefore, Ipecac syrup should be administered only in measured doses by trained medical personnel. Not for use by pregnant or nursing women or those with severe liver or kidney disease.
