nail problems

DESCRIPTION

Many women (and some men) can spend a great deal of time, effort and money on their nails, perhaps paying a manicurist and pedicurist to care for, sculpt, buff, polish, and make them look good. Even if you do not have your finger and toe nails professionally cared for, but you do them yourselves. it is necessary to make sure that your nails are healthy and properly cared for, if not for cosmetic reasons, but for health reasons. Cosmetic care, unfortunately, is not the care for weak, brittle, or unhealthy nails. In fact, such care may even damage nails and make them brittle.

The nails protect the nerve-rich fingertips and tips of the toes from injury. Nails are a substructure of the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin) and are compressed mainly of keratin, a type of protein. Keratin is the component responsible for the firmness of the nail. Nails grow from 0.05 to 1.2 millimeters (approximately 1/500 to 1/20 of an inch) a week. If a nail is lost, it takes about 7 months to grow out fully.

Healthy nail beds are pink, indicating a rich blood supply. Changes or abnormalities in the nails are often the result of nutritional deficiencies or other underlying conditions. The nails can reveal a great deal about the body's internal health. Nail abnormalities on either the finger or toes can indicate an underlying disorder.

When there is a deficiency in keratin, the nails can become brittle and split. A Keratin deficiency can be caused by malnutrition, malabsorption or a metabolic defect, such as low stomach acid. In addition, circulatory disorders, mineral and protein deficiencies or even a lack of vitamin C have been known to impair healthy nail growth. Brittle or split nails can also be attributed to a long-term exposure to chemicals found in detergents. Although the reason is unclear, brittle nails occur more often in women than in men.

Other factors such as a fungal infection or nails that become inflamed and ingrown (usually from improper care or injury to the nail bed) can occur in both finger and toe nails.

CAUSES

In Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), examination of parts of the body, such as the tongue or fingernails, can provide valuable information about the health status of the whole individual. According TCM - If something happens in the interior of the body, it must be reflected in the exterior of the body.

THE FINGERNAIL PICTURE OF HEALTH

A good practitioner of this art can look at a patient's nails and be able to tell which organs are weak and which are healthy. Since the nails are the last to receive oxygen because they are the farthest from the heart, they are often the first to show signs of disease processes. Each finger reflects what is going on in specific organs:
The Thumb: Reflects what is going on in the brain, excretory system and in the reproductive organs.
Index Finger: Reflects what is going on in liver, gall bladder or nervous system.
Middle Finger: Reflects what is going on in the heart and circulation.
Ring Fingers: Reflects what is going on in the reproductive organs and the hormonal system.
And the Little Finger: Reflects what is going on in the digestive system.

In general, a practitioner looks for abnormalities in the lunulae, color, texture and markings, shape, and pliability. Colors, shapes, configurations and distortions in the general shapes of the fingernails can indicate a great deal about an individual's health, provided you know how to read the signs. According to TCM, fingernail analysis is a complex and richly detailed diagnostic art, taking into account shape, size, color, appearance, and strength. Here are a few TCM tips:
  • The Lunulae (Half Moons): A healthy person should be able to see 8 lunulae on their fingernails, 4 on each hand. They should not be too large or too small. Absence of one or more lunulae, or smaller lunulae than normal, signal a deficiency in cellular oxygen levels. This type of deficiency leads to symptoms such as cold hands, cold feet, and sometimes a general numbness in certain parts of the body. If there are less than 8 lunulae on all the fingernails, then there is a problem with poor circulation. A person who is lacking lunulae on between 3 and 7 fingernails often has symptoms of fatigue and has low energy, is weak spirited. This condition also shows poor circulation, cold hands and feet, numbness, and memory loss. A person who has 2 large lunulae on the pinkies has a very overworked heart and is more prone to suffer from high blood pressure and heart disease than a healthy person. A person who has no lunulae at all often suffers from anemia, depression and low blood pressure. If the tops of the nails are wide while the bottoms of the nails are much narrower, this could be indicative of the possibility of stroke and other cardiovascular problems. Stroke is also possible if the lunulae are oversized and quite large. If there are less than 8 lunulae on all the fingernails, then there is a problem with poor circulation.

  • White Fingernails: When the fingernail appears pale, white, and without luster, this can indicate anernia, or what acupuncturists call "blood vacuity." This denotes a lack of vitality and life force in the blood associated with specific organs, and sometimes literally a shortage of blood. White, waxy fingernails can also indicate ulcerative bleeding or the presence of hookworm or other parasitic infestation, which produces a chronic loss of blood. Tiny white speckles appearing under the fingernails suggest a possible deficiency of calcium or zinc, the-activity of internal parasites, chronic constipation, or a state of fatigue. A single horizontal white line crossing the nail is typically associated with lead or arsenic poisoning.

  • Abnormal Nail Arc Shadows: The little white crescent at the base of each fingernail is known as a nail-arc shadow or "health circle." In a healthy person, each fingernail has a well-proportioned arc; arcs indicate not only one's general physical condition but the state of the cardiovascular function. If the arcs are unusually large or asymmetrical, this may indicate high blood pressure; if one or more arcs are missing (out of the ten fingernails), this may suggest an imbalance in the nervous system or anemia. The arcs may become obscured and hard to see following a stroke, but they may also become small or obscured if there is gastrointestinal disease or ulcer, asthma, acute pneumonia, or gout.

  • Fingernails With Grooves: Grooves or dips that cross the nail horizontally indicate a recent health problem or emotional or nutritional disturbance. The presence of more than one recessed groove can point to parasites in the intestines and/or a chronic weakness in intestinal function. If there is a groove on the index finger, this often highlights a tendency to develop skin disease. A groove on the ring finger is associated with eye problems, bronchitis, or respiratory disease; on the middle finger, with a loss of muscular strength; on the little finger, with problems in the throat, nerves, or gallbladder. A groove on the thumb points to a low level of basic life force.

  • Distortions In Fingernail Shape: When the fingernail appears to lie level across the skin without a curve, "1ike a flat sheet sticking to the fingertip," state Zong and Liscum, this usually connotes a low disease resistance and a state of physical weakness, especially after frequent illnesses. A fingernail with a thin weak middle section and creases running lengthwise along the nail body can indicate a parasitic infestation, a calcium deficiency, or anemia. A short, square shape to the nail often reflects a person who is impatient and potentially subject to heart disease; this, is especially so if the health circles are small or missing on the same fingernail.

  • Specific Health Problem Indications: A tendency to develop high blood pressure (and/or its actual presence) is indicated when the left index fingernail is light red, dumbbell shaped, and has a vertical mark in its center. A crescent shape in the lower-right comer of the left ring fingernail often points to uterine fibroids; a light red or purplish red, oval, crescent, or strip-shaped fingernail is an accompanying indicator.

  • Problems with the prostate (such as chronic prostatitis, or enlargement) are connoted by a dumbbell shape in the central portion of the left ring fingernail; the nail may also be light red or purplish red in color. Diabetes may be present if there is a round dot on the left middle fingernail and the fingernail is white.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

NAIL COLOR

Nail color can be grouped into black, blue, brown/copper, green, blue-green, grey, yellow, pale, purple or red groups. Each color means something different. Look for the color in general. Nails should be pink. When pressing down on the nail, the circulation should return within one second. This is called Capillary Refill Time. If you know you have traumatized a nail and it is black, blue or various shades of bruise, this is not really anything to be concerned about. The concern comes when some of the nails look different from the normal color. Also match the finger with the organs of the body (see above in Causes) and try to tie in or rule-out other symptoms you may have to what you see.

The colors (this can be subjective):
Black: Anemia, B-12 deficiency, bacterial infection, chronic kidney disease, adrenal gland problems, liver disease, cancer or melanomas, silver deposits (heavy metals), trauma.

Blue: Atherosclerosis, blood is too thick, liver disease, COPD (lung disease), copper or silver poisoning, decreased hemoglobin, drug reactions, gas poisoning, heart disease, hepatitis, high platelet counts, increased cholesterol, inflammation, kidneys with clogged arteries, lupus, prior strokes, rheumatoid arthritis, blood clots.

Green: Allergies to cleaning agents, Bacillus infection, localized fungal infection, serious emphysema.

Brown or Copper: Arsenic or copper poisoning, fungal infections. Note for fungal infections this is a sign that you have yeast inside your body, but you can heal the nail with daily applications of Vick's Vapo Rub. Continue the daily treatment until the nail grows totally out. Clip the nail short until it grows out completely. This usually takes 2-3 months.

Grey: Arthritis, edema, malnutrition, post-operative effects, glaucoma, lung problems, emphysema, cardio-pulmonary disease.

Yellow: Bleeding, diabetes, digestive problems, liver disease, hyperthyroidism, too much carrot juice, lymphatic problems, nail fungus, poor circulation, respiratory problems, Vitamin E deficiency, fluid retention in the lymphatic system.

Pale or white: Anemia, Candida (yeast), low life force, overall mineral deficiency, heart or lung problems, hemorrhage, hookworm infestation, kidney disease, liver disease, malnutrition, ulcers.

Purple: Oxygen deprivation, circulatory problems, congenital problems.

Red: Brain hemorrhage, heart disease, high blood pressure, lung disease, stroke, carbon monoxide poisoning.

NAIL TEXTURE & NAIL MARKINGS

The most common markings are: Vertical ridges and split nails, horizontal dips, red bands at the tips, yellow tips and white spots.
Vertical Ridges & Split Nails: Adrenal gland problems, arthritic tendencies, asthma, broken heart, bronchitis, calcium deficiency, chronic fatigue, chronic inflammation, chronic stress, depression, emotional trauma, excretory system conditions, hyperactivity or overexertion, iron deficiency, kidney problems, laryngitis, nervous problems, poor digestion/absorption in the small intestine, chemicals from food, dieting, protein deficiency, respiratory problems, unhappiness, Vitamin A deficiency, yeast and other fungi, lupus, chemo or radiation side effect, drugs or prescription use.

Remember to look to see if there are ridges on more than one finger and if the ridges are on the same finger of each hand, then go to the Causes section above and see which organs are associated with the ridges. That will help in ruling in or out what the cause is. If you have ridges on all your nails, your intestines are not effectively assimilating the foods you are eating. For these cases, a quality, easily assimilated ionic mineral and liquid vitamin supplement is recommended for best digestion.

Horizontal Dips: Poor circulation, picking at the nail bed, heart disease, stress, lack of essential nutrients, trauma.

Red Bands at the Tips: Allergies, liver overload, inflammation of the gastro-intestinal tract.

Yellow Tips: Liver problems, melanoma, poor digestion, smoker.

White Spots: Kidney or hormone imbalances, zinc deficiency, calcium deficiency, Vitamin A deficiency, excessive chemical or drug use of drugs processed through the kidneys, prostate or impotence problems, genital diseases such as chlamydia or syphilis.

NAIL SHAPE

The most common problems are short small beds, wide clubbed beds (clubbed means that the nails curve downward), and clubbed nails.
Short Small Beds: Heart disease. Get on Standard Process Cardio-Plus®. It rebuilds the heart (Cardio Plus is a protomorphogen) and is a great product.

Wide Clubbed Nails: Asbestos exposure, emphysema, lung disease. Pneumotrophin® is awesome for this. You may have to take it a year or two to rebuild the lung tissue. Pneumotrophin® is a protomorphogen.

Clubbed: Heart disease, liver disease, lung disease.

NAIL PLIABILITY
Brittle or Cracked Nails: Calcium deficiency, impaired kidney function, iron deficiency, malnutrition, protein deficiency, thyroid problems, Vitamin A deficiency, Vitamin D deficiency.

Soft & Thin nails: Adrenal Gland problems, can be associated with leg cramps, poor nutrition, protein deficiency, Vitamin C deficiency.

NAIL HEALTH - READING YOUR NAILS AS A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL

Nail changes may signify a number of disorders elsewhere in the body. These changes may indicate illness even before the rest of the body does. Seek medical attention if any of the following symptoms are suspected.

FINGERNAIL MARKINGS & NUTRITION

On the thumbnail, 25 percent of the nail bed should be covered by a moon. This means that your calcium intake is good. The moons should decrease in size a little on the next 3 fingers. All these markings can appear on toenails as well as fingernails. Nail changes or abnormalities are often the result of nutritional deficiencies or can reveal specific health conditions.

  • If no moons appear, or you only have small moons, your parathyroid glands are not sending the calcium to where it needs to go in the body.

  • A red haze over the moons indicate circulatory weakness. If the white moon area of the nail turns red, it may indicate heart problems; if it turns slate blue, then it indicates over exposure to silver or lung trouble

  • The pinky finger should have no moon. If it does, check the heart.

  • Vertical ridges indicate digestion weakness. Lengthwise grooves or ridges may indicate a kidney disorder and is associated with aging. An iron deficiency may also cause ridges. Vertical ridges on nails may indicate poor general health and poor nutrient absorption.

  • Horizontal ridges on nails can indicate severe stress, both psychological and physical. It may also indicate that a person is also more prone to arthritis.

  • White dots or lines indicate zinc deficiency. White lines across the nail may indicate a liver disease. White lines show possible heart disease, high fever, or arsenic poisoning.

  • Vertical black lines at the top of the thumbnail indicate heavy metal toxicity.

  • Peeling top layers of the nail indicate liver weakness.

  • Brittle nails signify possible iron deficiency and thyroid problems, impaired kidney function, and circulation problems. Nails that chip, peel, crack, or break easily show a nutritional deficiency and insufficient hydrochloric acid and protein. Minerals are also needed.

  • Really thick nails indicate a candida yeast infection. Thick nails may indicate that the vascular system is weakening and the blood is not circulating properly.

  • If you put your hand flat on the table, spread the fingers out, and nails turn white, that would indicate anemia.

  • Flat nails can denote Raynaud's disease.

  • Yellow nails can indicate internal disorders long before other symptoms appear. Some of these are problems with the lymphatic system, respiratory disorders, diabetes, and liver disorders.

  • White nails indicate possible liver or kidney disorder/or anemia. White nails with pink near the tips are a sign of cirrhosis.

  • Dark nails and/or thin, flat, spoon shaped nails are a sign of vitamin B-12 deficiency or anemia.

  • Red skin around the cuticles- can be indicate poor metabolism of essential fatty acids or may indicate the person has Lupus.

  • Deep blue nail beds show pulmonary obstruction such as asthma or emphysema.

  • Nail beading, bumps on nails is a sign of rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Soft, shiny nails without a moon may indicate an overactive thyroid.

  • Thinning nails may signal an itchy skin disease (lichen planus).

  • Nails separated from the nail bed may signify a thyroid disorder.

  • A half white nail with dark spots on the tip points out a possible kidney disease.

  • Raised nails at the base with small white ends show a respiratory disorder such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis. This nail condition may also be hereditary.

  • Red skin at the bottom of the nail may indicate a connective tissue disorder.

  • Ridges can signify a possible infection such as the flu.

  • Downward curved nail ends may denote heart, liver, or respiratory problems.

  • Ridges running up and down the nails indicate a tendency to develop arthritis.

  • Nails that resemble hammered brass indicate a tendency toward partial or total hair loss.

  • Unusually wide, square nails can suggest a hormonal problems and frayed and split ends indicate psoriasis; vitamin C, folic acid, and protein are needed.

    FINGERNAIL HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS

    NUTRIENT & SUPPLEMENT IMPORTANCE

  • vitamin B Complex: Low vitamin B intake results in fragile and brittle nails. Add Folic acids supplements or folate from natural food source (fruits and vegetables) for healthy nails.

  • Essential Fatty Acids: Aid in the health of skin and nails. They also help to relieve many inflammation problems that occur around the nails. Fatty acids are found in omega fatty acids from fish oil, flax seed oil, and borage seed oil. The fatty acids work well with the amino acid called L-methionine.

  • Multi-Vitamin & Mineral Supplement: Contains vitamin D, calcium, vitamin B , vitamin A, magnesium, and zinc which all are helpful for people with nail and skin health problems. The supplemental nutrients are also required for general good health and well being.

  • vitamin A: Deficiency in vitamin A can causes dryness and brittle nail. Vitamin A also helps the body process protein. Problems processing protein may cause hangnails and other skin related problems.

  • Carotenoids: Work with vitamin A.

  • vitamin C: A lack of vitamin C can cause hang nails.

  • Bioflavonoids: Work with vitamin C.

  • Vitamin D: Enhances calcium absorption in the body and the mineral calcium is needed to prevent brittle and dry nails.

  • Horsetail: This herb contains silica and helps the body use calcium properly and it is good for the flexibility of the fingernails and toenails. Silicon, from herbs such as oat straw tea and horsetail, promote strength in the hair, skin, and nails. Silicon is widely available in food.

  • Ginkgo Biloba: Herb that helps with circulation problems and is also good for brain and memory function.

  • Calcium: Needed for proper healthy nail (and bone) growth. A good calcium supplement may also contain magnesium and boron. Coral calcium is good as it is easily absorbed. Calcium, magnesium and vitamin D are the foundation for nails.

  • Zinc: This mineral helps with absorption of both minerals and enzymes. It has been shown that not getting enough zinc may cause white spots on the finger or toe nails.

  • Protein: A deficiency may make the nail beds appear white. Protein (free form amino acids) helps aid in building materials for new nails. Free form amino acids are rapidly absorbed and assimilated by the body. Brewer's yeast-contains all the needed nutrients high in protein.

  • Vitamin A or vitamin A Emulsion: The body cannot utilize protein without vitamin A. The emulsion form is more readily assimilated.

  • Essential Fatty Acids: EFA's aid in the health of skin and nails. They also help to relieve many inflammation problems that occur around the nails. Fatty acids are found in omega fatty acids from fish oil, flax seed oil, and borage seed oil. The fatty acids work well with the amino acid called L-methione. Lack of linoleic acid (an essential fatty acid) may cause the nail to split and flake. If your nails are flaking or brittle give them a boost by increasing your intake of key nutrients. Such as calcium, omega-3, vitamin C and zinc.

  • L-Cysteine and L-Methionine (amino acids), supplies the body with sulfur, which contributes to healthy skin, and strong hair and nails.

  • GENERAL NAIL WEAKNESS & SPLITTING

Nutritional deficiencies from poor digestion of proteins and/or minerals may produce general weakness of nails. A lack of stomach acid can produce both of these deficiencies. Note that antacids directly interfere with absorption of mineral nutrients. Vegetarians who eat inadequate amounts of protein may experience general weakness of nails. Brittle nails-may indicate a thyroid problem, impaired kidney function, and/or circulation problems. Brittle, soft nails without a moon may indicate an overactive thyroid known as hyperthyroidism.

What You Can Do: Caring for nails properly, using oils to moisturize dry nails and to restore natural emollients, drinking herbal teas and taking alternating warm and cold finger baths to promote blood flow are all good ways to promote healthy nails.

    nail salve for polishing nails
POLISHING PAD INSTEAD OF NAIL POLISH

While nail polish can offer split nails some short-term stability and prevent chipping, it also removes the natural fat found in nails. Eventually, brittleness will return with a vengeance. Make your nails shine by using a polishing pad and massaging a rich emollient, such as Cocoa Butter or Olive Oil, into your nails instead.

    nail scissors

Correct Nail Care: Filing with an emery board is gentler on the nails than cutting or clipping, but if you must cut, be sure to use manicure scissors. To help keep nails from splitting, don't exert too much pressure when filing. Never push back the cuticle with a hard or sharp object, which will cause the nails to develop grooves, grow irregularly and break off faster. Instead, be sure your cuticles are well-oiled; then, push them back using your fingertips.

Protection For Your Nails: Nails contain natural fats that help keep them shiny and healthy. If your hands are often in water or detergents, soap or other cleansers, the natural oil can be removed, causing the nails to become brittle, split or lose their shine. Damp hands and constant contact with water also can encourage nail fungus. When working in the house and yard, moisturize your hands periodically and protect them with gloves.

Trace Elements & Vitamins: Certain minerals, especially calcium and the trace elements molybdenum, sulfur, fluoride and zinc, are needed to synthesize the protein keratin, the main component in both nails and hair. Whole grains, dairy products, legumes and fish supply these minerals. Also, nails require the vitamin Biotin, found in Brewer's Yeast, saltwater fish and soybeans.

    FOODS FOR HEALTH

White spots on the nails are most often associated with low levels of zinc in the body. Zinc can be depleted by too much coffee and alcohol. Add wheat germ, egg yolks and fish to your diet or take 30-60 mg of a zinc supplement daily.

Brittle Nails / Easy Tearing Causes & Treatments:
    • A deficiency of calcium may contribute to brittle nails.
    • A deficiency of essential fatty acids may contribute to brittle nails.
    • A deficiency of iron may contribute to brittle nails with a tendency to tear crosswise.
    • A deficiency of zinc may contribute to brittle nails.

Iron-deficiency anemia may cause the nails to appear pale and become thin, brittle, ridged, and easily cracked or broken. Eat more iron rich foods such as eggs, liver, green-leafy vegetables, blackstrap molasses, almonds, poultry, whole grain breads and cereals, avocados, beets, dates, lima beans, pumpkins, peaches, pears, prunes, watercress, soybeans, raisins), bleeding (menstrual, hemorrhoids or because you take aspirin), or that your bone marrow simply is not making the right kind of blood; if changing the way you eat does not help, see your health care provider.

Supplemental vitamin A is recommended. Caution: Women who may become pregnant should not use more than 10,000 IU daily to avoid the potential for birth defects. Long-term use of doses greater than 50,000 IU/day may become toxic for adults and should be used only with the supervision of a health professional. Consider substituting beta carotene for long-term use.

An excess of selenium may contribute to brittle and thickened nails.

Silica: Herbs which are high in the mineral silica are often helpful in strengthening hair and nails. Silica is found in the highest concentrations in the plants that grow tall and straight with the ability to bend in the wind without breaking. Oat straw and Horsetail are both high in silica. Nature's Sunshine HSN-W is a high-silica hair, skin and nails formula.

Pink Half Moons: Treat bowel for Candida infection. See Candidiasis.

Fungal Infections in Nails: Treat with anti-fungal chemicals including aromatic oils, especially Tea Tree Oil. continue applications several times a day for longer than it takes the old infection to grow out. Treat bowel for Candida infection. See Candidiasis.

GENTLE REMEDY TO RESTORE NATURAL OILS

A treatment with Calendula Salve (see under Ingrown Toenails further down on this page) or Olive Oil, can restore the natural oils that nails lose from daily contact with soap and water. Rub liberal amounts of olive oil or calendula salve onto your hands and massage the oil or salve thoroughly into the nails. Cover your hands with thin cotton gloves and let the treatment work overnight. Several times during the day, rub some drops of olive into as well as around, the nails for further moisturizing.

    HERBAL HAND BATH

Once or twice daily, use contrast baths to promote blood circulation: Cook 2 tablespoons of Rosemary in 1 quart of water for 10 minutes, strain and put the decoction in a bowl. Place a second container with cold water next to the bowel with the warm Rosemary bath. Soak your hands for 2 minutes in the Rosemary water and then for 30 seconds in the cold water. Dry your hands thoroughly.

    HERBAL MINERAL TEA MIXTURE

Mix 4 teaspoons each of Nettle Leaves, Horsetail Herb, Chamomile Blossoms and Yarrow Flowers. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 tablespoon of the mixture. Let the infusion stand for 10 to 15 minutes, and then strain. Drink 1 cup, 3 times daily. This wound-healing blend is high in both minerals and anti-inflammatory compounds.

    FINGERNAILS THAT CURVE UPWARD

Fingernails curving up is called Koilonychia or "spooning." Spooning can be an indication of anemia and a deficiency of iron may contribute to spooning with ridging, brittleness, thinness and lack of luster. Also a deficiency of Chromium may contribute to spooning of nails. Finally, a deficiency of Vitamin C may contribute to spooning and other alterations of nails as a symptom of scurvy.

Fingernails that curve up can indicate that the diet is lacking sufficient protein; either not eating enough or not digesting it properly. It can also be a mineral deficiency. Both would call for a digestive aid with enzyme supplements to acidify the stomach for better protein digestion and mineral absorption.

    CUTICLES

For very dry skin around the cuticles, this may be one of the symptoms of fibromyalgia (FMS). Use high doses of Flax Seed Oil, Primrose Oil and Black Currant Oil, all taken together internally to treat this condition. Oils can be applied externally and massaged into the cuticles. Include large amounts of extra virgin Olive Oil in your foods and diet. Vitamin A and D deficiency can contribute to the problem and taking these supplements can improve dry and split cuticles. 100,000 mg of Vitamin A daily for about 1 week then down to 50,000 mg, then down to 10,000-15,000 IU daily as a normal amount. If nails become dry and begin to tear easily again, up the dosage until the problem disappears.

Herbal CA for cuticle and nail problems. The nail bed which has to be healthy before a healthy nail can be formed also plays a part in the dry cuticles. Having your hands in water all the time may contribute but may not be the cause of the problem. Golden Salve is a great treatment, but Vitamin A supplementation is a wonderful preventative. This is often caused by a lack of essential fatty acids in the diet. Often a result of low fat diets. Add Black Currant Oil or Evening Primrose Oil and it should correct rather quickly by supplying needed essential fatty acids to the diet (see links above for EFA supplements). This will help your nails and cuticles as well as your immune system.

Hypothyroidism makes it very hard to utilize Vitamin A, thus the need for larger doses for those who have this disorder. It also makes it almost impossible to convert Beta-Carotene into vitamin A. Therefore, a recommendation of a Vitamin A & D supplement is necessary. FINGERNAIL MOONS

The Lunulae (Lunula is singular form, Lunulae is plural. The lunulae are those little white moon things at the base of the nail): There should be 8 of these. The lunulae on the little fingers should be missing according to Eastern Medicine Philosophy. The one on the thumb nail should be 25% or less than the total length of the nail from base to flesh line at the top.

If the thumb lunula is too large the heart and circulation is working overtime and eventually this overworks the heart. The person may be exhibiting high blood pressure. Other signs that the heart is working overtime would be the presence of "heart line" on the ear lobe (a line just above the lobe itself) and a pointed tongue. If the tongue is red at the tip, there is a more serious involvement of the heart.

Lunulae on the little fingers also is a sign that the circulation is working overtime (especially in the digestive area) and may indicate a tendency of heart dis-ease. High blood pressure may be the cause as well.

If the moons are very high (large) on your fingers, it indicates high blood pressure. Excessive half moons, especially if also excessively shiny, indicates an overactive thyroid. High moons on the thumbs is ok. Low moons on thumbs indicates that you are not assimilating minerals.

Fewer than 8 lunulae: The lack of nail half moons indicates a lack of or poor circulation and low pressure or depressed circulation, underactive thyroid, or sodium/potassium imbalance. Poor circulation, anemia, fatigue, not enough oxygenation or exercise, heart disease, imbalanced nervous system, numbness, protein deficiency, Vitamin A deficiency or weak-spirited (low life force or "chi"). The most common cause is that people forget to breathe and forget to take deep breaths. Practice deep breathing exercises. No half moons or ridged nails indicates a Vitamin A deficiency, kidney disorder or protein deficiency.

IF the thumb is the only place you have moons, you are very low in minerals, especially calcium. Herbal CA is a good calcium, but some people also need TS-II to be able to utilize the calcium. The thyroid governs where the calcium goes in the body. And TS-II feeds the thyroid and also the pituitary, etc. While using CoQ10 or Germanium might help for some, Calcium may help for others. Everyone is different, depending on underlying factors and nutritional needs.

Shoot-like things emanating from the border of the lunulae: It can mean thyroid problems or cancer. Many men with this on their thumbnails have had prostate cancer or have had their prostate removed due to cancer. This can reverse when you get to the core cause of disease in the body. If you have this sign you might want to get a couple of blood tests from your health care provider such as a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test and a Thyroid panel.

    MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Hyperthyroidism

You can tell often if a person is right-handed or left handed because the lunulae will be larger (or there may be more of them) on the hand that is used more often. You should have moons on all but your pinkie finger. The moons indicate the level of calcium in the body. The healthiest people have a moon in every fingernail and they should be in order with the thumb being the largest, and each finger should have a smaller moon, in order with the little finger having the smallest. However, if the moons are out of order, one needs iodine to help send the calcium where it belongs.

    PEELING FINGERNAILS

Nails that break easy (chip, peel, crack)- may indicate a poor nutrition, insufficient hydrochloric acid, and protein in the diet. As well as deficiency in minerals. increase your vitamin A, by drinking carrot juice. Eat three servings of fish each week and/or consider taking a fish oil supplement.

For nail problems caused by psoriasis, eat more fish and other foods with essential fatty acids (whole grains, nuts, seeds).

When the top layer of the finger nails have separated and they can peel like bark on a tree, it is a sign or HCl deficiency, lack of protein or poor protein assimilation or a lack of iron. Dandelion will provide iron and result in stronger nails. Essential fatty acids (to treat an Omega-3 deficiency) may help the problem such as Black Currant Oil, Flax Seed Oil and Vitamin E. In the meantime, Pau D' Arco Lotion and or Healing AC Cream will help it heal. Some results should be seen in 2-3 weeks.

    RIDGED FINGERNAILS

Vertical ridges on fingernails are often caused by the lack of protein absorption and improper digestion. This individual needs a good enzyme complex supplement for proper protein assimilation and the ridges often disappear. Vertical ridges on the nails indicate history of toxicity and may indicate severity of lining in the colon. Also liver health (primarily excretions) are weak and generally low vitality. If the vertical ridges are split there is hormone imbalance from the toxicity. White spots on the nails, or any place on the body, indicates the inability to process or digest sugars or dairy products. Horizontal indentations indicate a severe stress or other overload to meridian represented in the finger.

Adrenal problems and stress may be an underlying cause. Adrenals need Calcium, protein, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin C, Licorice, and more. A good idea might be to start with PDA or Food Enzymes, for the HCl to digest both protein and calcium. Vegetarians who are not careful with their diet can easily become low in protein, which in turn adds stress to the adrenals. Carbohydrate addicts could fall into this category too. If they have other signs of calcium deficiency such as poor sleep, muscle cramps or tetany, nervous or nerve problems, hormone problems (calcium plays a part in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, acetylcholine and norepinephrine), tooth problems, pain, osteoporosis, arthritis, hypertension, heart palpitations, elevated cholesterol, and so forth. It all starts with digestion and basic vitamins and minerals. Skeletal Strength is a great combination, and works well to take it at bedtime. It might take a lot and a long while of supplementation to rebuild calcium levels if they are exhausted, but persistent use will pay benefits. And support the adrenals with stress management and a selection of the following products such as HS-II, Pantothenic Acid, Nutri-Calm, HY-A or Licorice Root, Master Gland, Ginseng and Vitamin C.

The vertical lines are usually an indication of malabsorption and for this Marshmallow and Pepsin taken on an empty stomach 2-3 times per day may bring on good results. Minerals will also help. The white spots are an indication of Zinc or calcium deficiency. Add Zinc and Colloidal Minerals or Alfalfa to the diet. HSN-W may be used for vertical nail lines with results in a few months. The diet needs more hydrochloric acid. Try using digestive enzymes as a supplement. Avoid antacids that reduce HCl production.

Anemia and iron deficiency may contribute to nail ridges as a sign of low minerals and kidney stress. The kidneys become strained as well as the liver with anemia. However, before using an iron supplement, use an enzyme complex to help assimilation problems and protein digestion. If the enzymes are not available to break down the proteins, they may not be breaking down and absorbing their iron either.

    MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Anemia

Check the diet since it might not be simply a calcium deficiency but magnesium is needed so the calcium can be used. Calcium must be adequately balanced by magnesium and other minerals to go where it belongs to grow the nails. The normal Calcium/Magnesium ratio is 2 parts Calcium to 1 part Magnesium (2:1 or as an example - 2,000 mg Calcium to 1,000 mg Magnesium). However, if your diet is insufficient in one or the other of these important minerals, this ratio may need to be re-adjusted until the body is in balance again. Vitamin D is important for calcium uptake as well. Calcium and Magnesium must also be balanced with potassium, phosphorus and sodium (the electrolyte minerals) for a healthy nervous system and cardiac system (since the heart is dependent on nerve impulses to keep it beating properly). Taking a mineral supplement that has a balance of these minerals along with trace minerals may be recommended. For splitting nails, try using Try MSM with HSN-W and 4-5 capsules of Dandelion daily.

White spots in the nail increase your intake of B vitamins by eating more organic poultry; seafood, and whole grains and vitamin B complex, vitamin B deficiency can also result in fragile nails.

white lines AND horizontal ridges on the thumbs can indicate arsenic poisoning. Horizontal ridges can also indicate a B-vitamin deficiency. Another reason for horizontal lines is when there is severe stress on the body, either emotionally, from disease and/or infection. Genetics can play a role in different nail types so if you have always had this, could be genetic. And then again it may not be any of these things and nothing to worry about. Try taking a B-Complex supplement. A trace mineral deficiency such as silica. HSN Complex is very high in the trace minerals needed for the hair, skin, and nails.

    NAIL FUNGUS

Nail fungus is commonly found on toe nails and occasionally on fingernails. The safest, cheapest and most effective treatment for this is to apply Vick's Vapo Rub once a day on the entire nail. Do this every day until the entire nail grows out. Usually this takes from 2 1/2 to 3 months. Clip the nail and keep it as short as possible during this process. The Vick's has a high concentration of camphor in it which penetrates the nail and oxygenates the area. Fungus can not live with that extra oxygen. Many times nail fungus is a sign that the person has a deep-seated yeast infection and has had this for years. Myrrh gum powder capsules can be used for yeast infections. It is one of those herbs that works for the greater portion of the population. You will need to have the dose figured out for you (usually 1-3 capsules/day) and you should take it for several months to kill the yeast from the inside out. This way the nail fungus will be gone permanently. Myrrh is not a good choice for children, but it is the most common yeast treatment for adults.

    CANDIDA (YEAST INFECTION)

    candida yeast organism magnified
  • Candida (can-did-uh) is a yeast-like fungus. This fungus most often affects the skin around the nails or the soft, moist areas around body openings. Diaper rash in babies is a form of candidal infection, as is thrush, the white patches most often found in the mouths of kids and babies. Older girls and women may develop another form of candidal infection in the area in and around the vagina. This is called a yeast infection. Candida, the yeast-like fungus, causes the skin around the infected area to itch. The skin may also be red and swollen.

    TYPES OF CANDIDA INFECTIONS:

    candida thrush in mouth

Fungal infection of the mouth is referred to as oral thrush, a condition in which creamy-looking white patches form on the tongue and the mucous membranes of the mouth. If the patches are scraped off, bleeding may result. This condition is most common in infants and in those with compromised immune systems.

    MoonDragon's ObGyn Pediatric Information: Thrush

    candida infection between fingers

Nursing mothers sometimes develop a candida infection of the nipples that causes severe pain while feeding. This can be further complicated if the baby develops oral thrush since it can lead to a "ping-pong" effect in which mother and baby continually reinfect each other.

Fungal infection under the nails (paronychia) or between the toes may cause discoloration and swelling, and the nails may become raised above the surface of the nail bed.

    candida infection vaginal

In fungal infection of the vagina (yeast infection), a cheesy discharge present, usually accompanied by intense itching.

MoonDragon's ObGyn Information: Candida (Yeast Infections)

Recurrent fungal infections are a common sign of depressed immune function. The people most likely to be affected are those who have diseases such as diabetes or cancer, or who are infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Women who use oral contraceptives and people taking antibiotics are at higher risk as well, as are people who are obese and/or perspire heavily.

MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Fungal Infections

  • Greenish nails may indicate a fungal infection, can also indicate an internal bacterial infection. For fungal or bacterial nail infections, boost immunity by eating garlic and onions, foods rich in zinc (nuts, root vegetables, shellfish) vitamin C and flavonoids (fruits and vegetables), and omega-3 (nuts, seeds, dark green leafy vegetables).

Thick, distorted fingernails can signify a fungal condition: Tea Tree Oil applied externally and taking probiotics (either Acidophilus or Bifidus capsules from your health food store) may help. The condition could also be due to a vitamin deficiency, make sure you are eating 5-10 fruits and veggies a day and take a daily multi-vitamin. Soak fingers in a mixture of warm Pau d'arco and Goldenseal tea for 15 minutes a day; avoid all foods that contain sugar or refined carbohydrates because fungi thrive on them; avoid meat, dairy products, cola drinks, grains, processed foods, and fried greasy foods; apply crushed raw garlic or honey on the nails; take two Garlic (Kyolic) capsules 3 times daily with meal to neutralize fungi. Take Acidophilus as directed on the label to supply the friendly bacteria usually deficient if you have a fungal infection distorted fingernails could also be due to arteriosclerosis, so see your health care conditioner to rule out this condition.

    ingrown nails

    INGROWN NAILS

It is no wonder that our feet sometimes give us trouble, given the abuse they take. Feet endure a massive amount of stress, but, sadly, caring for our feet is all to often a sorely neglected part of personal hygiene. Lack of proper care can set the stage for a common source of foot discomfort - Ingrown Toenails - which often affect the big toe. Ingrown toenails occur when the edge of the toenail cuts into the soft tissue of the toe, causing it to become red and swell. The problem often stems from wearing too-tight shoes, from improper toenail clipping or from injury to the nail bed. If the condition is caught and treated early, you may be able to avoid further damage, such as an infection. Continued neglect, however, will only bring more pain. In severe cases, a health care provider will need to remove the nail bed. Nevertheless, there are several natural remedies that can help you to reduce the inflammation and provide relief. The key to healthy feet is proper footwear, good hygiene, and careful toenail clipping.

What You Can Do: Simply cutting the nail correctly can do a lot to heal slightly ingrown toenails. For severe pain or pus, though, you will need to see a podiatrist (foot health care provider) who may have to surgically remove the edge of the nail that is ingrown. For mild inflammation, you may find that certain natural remedies are helpful.

Wear Comfortable Shoes: While poor nail care, heredity, fungus and injury to the nail bed may cause this painful condition, very often the source is simply shoes that are too tight and short. Make sure your shoes are wide enough in the toe region to allow your toes to lie next to each other without being squeezed together. This may mean you will have to stop wearing those painful designer shoes that look so fashionable but are killers on your feet. Keep in mind, as we age and/or gain and/or lose weight, our foot size will change accordingly. Have your feet properly "sized" periodically to make sure you are wearing the right size and width of shoe.

Recognize Inflammations Early: Examine your feet daily after bathing to keep in check any potential nail problems. If you notice any sign of swelling, redness or pain, take measures suggested here to nip the problem in the bud. For an ingrown nail at an early stage, take a hot foot bath and then gently place a sliver of cotton between the edge of the nail and the skin. Add a drop of Tea Tree Oil and change the cotton twice daily.

EXTRA TIP - FOOT BATH FOR INFLAMMATION

Mild inflammations due to an ingrown nail can be relieved in a hot foot bath with a few added drops of essential oils. For example, Tea Tree Oil, Chamomile Oil and Yarrow Oil all have anti-inflammatory and germicidal actions. The oils can either be blended together or used individually until the inflammation is reduced. Note: Only Tea Tree Oil can be applied directly to the skin.

Hangnails and ingrown toenails can cause inflammation of the tissue surrounding the nails (i.e., paronychia) and are linked to vitamin C deficiency. If you have ingrown nails or are prone to them, make sure you include sufficient vitamin C in your diet either by food source or by supplement.

    onion-honey syrup
    HONEY-ONION SYRUP

Place alternating layers of honey and onion rings in a jar until it is full. Let the mixture steep for at least 2 weeks, and then store the syrup in a cool place. When needed, put some syrup on a gauze pad and wrap it around the inflamed toe. Both the honey and the onion have a germicidal and anti-inflammatory effect.

Cut Your Nails Correctly: Whether you suffer from ingrown toenails or not, you should always take care of your nails correctly. Cut straight across the nail at the tip of the toe and avoid leaving pointed edges. File ragged edges with an emery board.

    CALENDULA SALVE

A calendula salve is an excellent antidote for skin inflammations and may be applied to ingrown toenails to promote healing. Put 5 tablespoons of dried Calendula Flowers in 1/2 cup of Olive Oil or Sweet Almond Oil in a saucepan, and heat for 15 minutes. After straining off the flowers, return the oil to a double boiler and add 1/2 ounce of Bees Wax. Stir it frequently until the beeswax is fully melted. Remove it from the heat and stir in Lemon Balm Essential Oil. Quickly pour into sterilized jars. Also, calendula salve may be used to help soothe dry skin, chapped lips and diaper rash on babies, as well as to help heal wounds.

  • RECOMMENDATIONS

    DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Eat a diet composed of 50 to 70 percent fresh fruits and raw vegetables to supply necessary vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. Eat foods that are rich in sulfur and silicon, such as broccoli, fish, onions, and sea vegetables. Also include in the diet plenty of foods that are high in biotin, such as brewer's yeast, soy flour, and whole grains. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and moderate amounts of broiled fish and broiled skinless chicken for protein.

  • Do not eat any foods containing sugar, candy or refined carbohydrates. Fungi thrive on sugar. The most healing diet for this condition is one that is fruit-free, sugar-free, and yeast-free.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol. Avoid processed foods, saturated fats and fried, greasy foods as they stress the liver. Avoid caffeine, hydrogenated oils, meat, cola and soft drinks in your diet.

  • Eliminate those foods from the diet that tend to promote secretion of mucus, especially meat and dairy products. Reduce dairy products in your diet, except for yogurt and yogurt products with active "friendly" bacterial cultures.

  • Eat a high fiber diet (brown rice and millet are good).

  • Make sure to get vitamin A, C, and E.

  • For healthy nails, be sure to get plenty of quality protein, and take a protein supplement. Eat grains, legumes, oatmeal, nuts, and seeds. Eggs also are a good source of protein, as long as your blood cholesterol levels are not too high. If you want healthy nails, be sure you are getting enough quality protein in your diet.

  • Drink plenty of quality water and other liquids (6-8 glasses daily). Cuts and cracks in the nails may indicate a need for more liquids.

  • Drink fresh carrot juice daily. This is high in calcium and phosphorus and is very good for strengthening the nails.

  • MoonDragon's Nutrition Therapy: Juicing

  • Consume citrus fruits, salt, and vinegar in moderation, if at all. Excessive intake of these foods can result in a protein and/or calcium imbalance that may adversely affect the health of the nails.

  • Supplement your diet with royal jelly, a good source of essential fatty acids, and spirulina or kelp, which are rich in silica, zinc, and B vitamins, and help to strengthen nails.

    Herbal Remedies: Sea Salt Products
Pure unrefined Sea Salt contains essential amounts of sodium chloride, and sodium chloride is one of the 12 daily essential minerals. Our bodies cannot live without salt (sodium chloride). Salt in the body makes hydrochloric acid, which is one of the essential digestive fluids. There is not enough natural salt in our foods, so we must supplement our diet, but the salt we eat on our foods is not sufficient, since during the refining process, the sodium chloride evaporates and sodium hydroxate is left. Sodium hydroxate irritates the system and does not satisfy the body's hunger and need for sodium chloride. Natural salt (sodium chloride) dissolves in water and can therefore dissolve in your body. Refined salt does not dissolve in water or your body. When foreign substances, such as refined salt collect in your organs and tissues, it will eventually cause malfunctioning of essential body processes: heart disease, arthritis, hardening of the body tissues and arteries, calcium deposits in the joints, etc. Natural organic salt (saline) will not cause calcification in your body.

  • To strengthen the nails, try soaking them in warm Olive Oil or Cider Vinegar for ten to twenty minutes daily.

  • Herbal Remedies: Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (Mother), Dynamic Health, 16 fl. oz.

  • Treat your nails gently. Using them to pry, pick, scrape, or perform tasks such as removing staples can damage them.

  • Keep your nails relatively short. Nails longer than one-quarter inch beyond the fingertip break and bend easily.

  • Do NOT cut the cuticles. Uncovering the nails this way is harsh and irritating, and may cause infection. Use baby oil or cream and gently push the cuticles back.

  • Soak your nails before trimming them. Nails are most likely to split and peel when they are dry. Apply hand cream each morning and evening to prevent nails from drying out.

  • Do not repeatedly immerse your hands in water that contains detergents or chemicals such as bleach or dish soap; this results in split nails. Wear cotton-lined gloves when doing housework such as dishes and laundry or when using furniture polish. This protects your hands and nails against harsh chemicals. Wearing gloves is especially important for people who work in jobs where their hands are exposed to chemicals. Not only does this damage the nails, but it causes the skin surrounding the nail bed to dry out and crack. This can lead to bleeding and can be quite painful.

  • Do not pull at hangnails. Cut them with sharp clippers or scissors. Keep your hands moisturized to help prevent hangnails.

  • If you are diabetic, see your health care provider if your cuticles has become inflamed, because the infection can spread.

  • If you wear nail polish, use a base coat underneath it to prevent yellowing.

  • Use nail polish removers as little as possible. They contain solvents (such as acetone) that leach lipids from the nails and make them brittle. These solvents are also potentially highly toxic, and be absorbed through the skin.

  • Never apply polycrylic or other artificial nails over your own. They may be nice for a while, but they destroy the underlying nail. The chemicals and glue used are dangerous to the body, and are readily absorbed through the damaged nail and nail bed. The use of artificial nails has also been known to contribute development of fungal infection of the fingernails.

  • Many professional manicure businesses have been cited for not meeting health codes. If you have professional manicures, always insist on sterile instruments or bring your own to ensure they are free from bacteria and disease. Use isopropyl alcohol to sterilize your instruments.

  • FUNGAL INFECTION RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Keep the skin clean and dry. Expose the affected area to the air as much as possible.

  • Apply honey and crushed garlic, alternately, to the affected area.

  • If the nails are affected, apply Aerobic 07 drops from Aerobic Life Industries directly on the area. Soak infected hands or feet in a solution of Aerobic 07 drops and pau d'arco tea daily for 15 minutes. When not soaking them, keep the nails dry and clean.

  • Wear clean cotton clothing and underwear. Do not wear clothing or use towels more than once without washing them, preferably in hot water with chlorine bleach added.

  • To replace necessary "friendly" bacteria in the colon, use L.Bifidus retention enema. See Enemas and L. Bifidus Enema for more information.

  • Try not to allow an infected area of the body to come in contact with healthy skin. People who have fungal infections in one area often also have infections in other areas.

  • If you are nursing a baby and your baby has thrush, or you develop sharp, shooting pains during feedings, or both, consult both your child's and your own health care provider. You may have a fungal infection. Both you and your baby should be treated to ensure a cure.

  • If you have been treating a fungal infection on your own and you develop symptoms of a worsening infection, such as increased redness and swelling or fever, consult your health care provider. You may have developed a bacterial infection on top of the fungal infection.

  • For fungal infections underneath the fingernails, soak your nails in a mixture of 50 percent white distilled vinegar and 50 percent pure water for 10 to 20 minutes daily.

  • Corticosteroids and oral contraceptives should be avoided, as they may upset the normal and healthy balance of the body.

  • FUNGAL INFECTION CONSIDERATIONS

  • There are numerous topical antifungal preparations available in drug stores. However, many holistic health care practitioners believe that garlic is safer and works just as well, if not better, than these drugs.

    HELPFUL MOONDRAGON'S LINKS:

    NAIL CARE CONSIDERATIONS

  • If you expose your hands to too much water and soap, nail may become loose from the nail bed. Water causes ails to swell. They then shrink as they dry, resulting in loose and brittle nails.

  • Discolored nails can be caused by prolonged illness, nicotine, allergies, or diabetes. If your nails are green, may have a bacterial infection or a fungal infection between the nail and the nail bed. If you have a fungal or bacterial infection, and especially if you are taking antibiotics, acidophilus is needed.

  • Health care providers often prescribe a regimen of 250 milligrams grisoseofulvin (Fulvicin), four times daily, for a fungal infection of the nails. The white blood cell count must be monitored during this treatment. Another prescription anti-fungal agent is ketoconazole (Nizoral), which is available cream or shampoo, as well as in tablet form.

  • Anticancer medications can cause bands and streaks of color to appear in the nails. These conditions disappear when medication is stopped.

  • A recent study found that hospital nurses with artificial nails had twice as much bacteria on their hands than those nurses who had natural nails. The area around and underneath the fingernails is one of the easiest places for germs to collect. The best way to prevent this is to thoroughly wash your hands for at least 15 seconds using antiseptic soap under hot water. Make sure you wash the area underneath the nail and around the cuticle area. Use a clean towel to dry your hands. Use disposable towels if they are available.

  • Poor thyroid function may be reflected in the nails.

DISORDERS THAT SHOW UP IN THE NAILS

Nail changes may signify a number of disorders elsewhere in the body. These changes may indicate illness before any other symptoms do. Seek medical attention if any of the following symptoms are suspected.

  • Black, splinter-like bits under the nails can be a sign of infectious endocarditis, a serious heart infection; other heart disease; or a bleeding disorder.

  • Black bands from the cuticle outward to the end of the nail can be an early sign of melanoma.

  • Brittle nails signify possible iron deficiency, thyroid problems, impaired kidney function, and circulation problems.

  • Brittle, soft, shiny nails without a moon may indicate an overactive thyroid.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Hyperthyroidism

  • Crumbly, white nails near the cuticle are sometimes an indication of AIDS.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: AIDS

  • Dark nails and/or thin, flat, spoon-shaped nails are a sign of vitamin B-12 deficiency or anemia. Nails can also turn gray or dark if the hands are placed in chemicals such as cleaning supplies (most often bleach) or a substance to which one is allergic.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Anemia

  • Deep blue nail beds show a pulmonary obstructive disorder such as asthma or emphysema.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Asthma

  • Downward-curved nail ends may denote heart, liver, or respiratory problems.

  • Flat nails can denote Raynaud's disease.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Raynaud's Disease

  • Greenish nails, if not a result of a localized fungal infection, may indicate an internal bacterial infection.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Fungal Infection

  • A half-white nail with dark spots at the tip points to possible kidney disease.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Kidney Disorders

  • An isolated dark-blue band in the nail bed, especially in light-skinned people, can be a sign of skin cancer.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Skin Cancer

  • Lindsay's nails (sometimes known as half-and-half nails), in which half of the tip of the nail is white and the other half is pink, may be a sign of chronic kidney disease.

  • Nail beading (the development of bumps on the surface of the nail) is a sign of rheumatoid arthritis.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Nails that broaden toward the tip and curve downward are a sign of lung damage, such as from emphysema or exposure to asbestos.

  • Nails that chip, peel, crack, or break easily show a general nutritional deficiency and insufficient hydrochloric acid and protein. Minerals are also needed.

  • Nails raised at the base, with small, white ends, show a respiratory disorder such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis. This type of nail may also simply be inherited.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Bronchitis

    MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Emphysema

  • Nails separated from the nail bed may signify a thyroid disorder or a local infection.

  • Nails that have pitting resembling hammered brass indicate a tendency toward partial or total hair loss.

  • MoonDragon's ObGyn Information: Alopecia

  • Pitted red-brown spots and frayed and split ends indicate psoriasis; vitamin C, folic acid, and protein are needed.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Psoriasis

  • Red skin around the cuticles can be indicative of poor metabolism of essential fatty acids or of a connective tissue disorder such as lupus.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Lupus

  • Ridges can appear in the nails either vertically or horizontally. Vertical ridges indicate poor general health, poor nutrient absorption, and/or iron deficiency; they may also indicate a kidney disorder. Horizontal ridges can occur as a result of severe stress, either psychological or physical, such as from infection and/or disease. A horizontal indentation in the nail (Beau's line) can occur as a result of a heart attack, major illness, or surgery. Ridges running up and down the nails also indicate a tendency to develop arthritis.

  • Spooning (upward-curling) or pitting nails can be caused by disorders such as anemia or problems with iron absorption.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Anemia

  • Thick nails may indicate that the vascular system is weakening and the blood is not circulating properly. They may also be a sign of thyroid disease.

  • Thick toenails can be a result of a fungal infection.

  • Thinning nails may signal lichen planus, an itchy skin disorder.

  • Two white horizontal bands that do not move as the nail grows are a sign of hypo-albuminemia, a protein deficiency in the blood.

  • Unusually wide, square nails can suggest a hormonal disorder.

  • White lines show possible heart disease, high fever, or arsenic poisoning.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Cardio Problems

MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Cardiovascular Disease

MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Arsenic Poisoning

  • White lines across the nail may indicate a liver disease.

  • If the white moon area of the nail turns red, it may indicate heart problems. If it turns slate blue, then it can indicate either heavy metal poisoning (such as silver poisoning) or lung trouble.

  • White nails indicate possible liver or kidney disorders and/or anemia.

  • White nails with pink near the tips are a sign of cirrhosis.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Cirrhosis

  • Yellow nails or an elevation of the nail tips can indicate internal disorders long before other symptoms appear. Some of these are problems with the lymphatic system, respiratory disorders, diabetes, and liver disorders.
