  • HIV-AIDS DESCRIPTION

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the infection that leads to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). HIV infection causes a breakdown in the body's immune system. A pregnant woman with HIV may pass the virus to her unborn child.

    MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: HIV & AIDS - A Detailed Description
    MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Women & AIDS

    HIV-AIDS FREQUENT SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

For HIV infection (some of the symptoms of early HIV infection may mimic those of the first trimester of pregnancy or the flu).
    • Fatigue.
    • Unexplained weight loss.
    • Recurrent respiratory and skin infections; fever.
    • Swollen lymph glands throughout the body.
    • Genital changes.
    • Enlarged spleen.
    • Diarrhea.
    • Mouth sores.
    • Night sweats.

    CAUSES

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus); a virus (retrovirus) that invades and destroys cells of the immune system. HIV infection results in lowered resistance to other infections and some types of cancers.

    RISK FACTORS

  • Sexual contact with a man who has had sex with another man or woman that has been infected with the virus. Know your partner's sexual history. You and your partner may want to be tested before you begin having sex.

  • Multiple sexual partners. Your chance of getting infected with HIV increases with each sexual partner you have.

  • Risky sexual practices. The riskiest sex is vaginal or anal sex without a latex condom.

  • Use of contaminated needles for intravenous drug use. Ask about your partner's sexual history and whether or not he or she has ever injected drugs. With a partner using "shooting" drugs, the risk greatly increases your chances of HIV infection.

  • Transfusions of blood or blood products from a person with acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

  • Current or past sexually transmitted disease.

  • Non-use of latex condoms when having sex. Latex condoms can help prevent the spread of HIV infection.

  • PREVENTIVE MEASURES

  • If trying to become pregnant, both you and your partner should consider HIV testing before having unprotected sex.

  • If artificial insemination is utilized for pregnancy, the donor should be tested first for HIV.

  • Avoid use of intravenous drugs of abuse. Never share needles if you do use drugs.

  • Avoid risky sexual practices. The riskiest is vaginal or anal sex without a latex condom. Anal sex poses the greatest risk because it is more likely to tear or break the skin or anal-rectal tissue. This makes it easier for HIV from an infected partner to enter the bloodstream.

  • If you are infected with HIV (or at risk of being infected) and become pregnant, seek special medical help from a health care provider or midwife with experience in HIV pregnancies.

  • If your are infected with HIV, it is recommended that breastfeeding should be avoided.

  • Condom Usage To Prevent Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

    EXPECTED OUTCOME

  • Having HIV infection or AIDS does appear to have some effect on the pregnancy itself which could result in premature birth and low birth weight.

  • A pregnancy does involve the immune system and, therefore, may affect the course of an HIV infection (although the effect is probably small).

  • An average of 70-percent of infants born to HIV mothers do not become HIV infected.

  • POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS

  • HIV infected baby.

  • HIV-AIDS CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL TREATMENT

    MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS

  • If you become pregnant and you are HIV positive, seek early medical help for your pregnancy. Special individualized care will be undertaken with referrals to any necessary support systems (e.g., counseling, social services).

  • Screening for other sexually transmitted diseases (Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Hepatitis B & Hepatitis C and Herpes Simplex Viral Infection) is important.

  • Testing is recommended for other AIDS-related infections, such as Tuberculosis, Toxoplasmosis, and Cytomegalovirus (CMV).

  • Vaccinations for Hepatitis B, and Pneumococcal and Influenza viruses may be suggested for susceptible patients. Be informed about the pros and cons of vaccinations before obtaining them. This is especially important during pregnancy and if you have a compromised immune system. Some vaccinations (or most) should not be given during pregnancy. Do research and make an informed decision regarding this controversial method of obtaining immunities.

  • Special testing of CD4+ lymphocyte cell counts are usually done each trimester.

  • Avoid contact with people who have infections, e.g., colds.

  • The method of delivery (vaginal or cesarean) appears to have no effect on the possible transmission of HIV, however, discuss the delivery options with your midwife or health care provider.

  • Research continues into new drugs, treatment methods, and possible vaccines against HIV. Discuss current treatment options with your health care provider or midwife.

  • Additional information is available from the National AIDS Hotline (800) 342-2437; Spanish version (800) 342-7432.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: HIV & AIDS - Additional Considerations & Treatments

    MEDICATION

  • Most of the medications used to fight opportunistic infections in HIV pregnant women have not been shown to cause birth defects. Your midwife or health care provider will use caution, careful consideration and expert consultation in prescribing any medications or therapies. The benefits of the treatment for the mother needs to be weighed against the risks. Some infections are life-threatening.

  • Antiviral medication (zidovudine) is often recommended to reduce the risk of transmitting the HIV infection in the unborn child. This drug is taken during pregnancy and labor and also needs to be given to the newborn.

  • WARNING! There are no drugs that have been proven absolutely safe for your developing baby. Use extreme caution in taking any medications during pregnancy and then these should only be used after all other methods have been tried and with the careful guidance of your midwife or health care provider..

    ACTIVITY

  • No special restrictions. Regular exercise, as permitted by the course of the infection and by the pregnancy is helpful. Correct diet, appropriate supplements, stress reduction, a proper environment, and a healthy mental outlook all play significant roles in keeping the immune system working adequately.

  • Avoid people with any type of infections, colds, flu or other illnesses that can be transmitted to you.

  • Avoid people who smoke and do not smoke yourself.

  • Obtain as much fresh air and rest as possible, and moderate amounts of sunshine.

  • Always use a condom (latex, not sheepskin) and spermicide (spermicide kills HIV) for any sexual contact. If you use a lubricant with a latex condom, use only a water based lubricant such as K-Y jelly; do NOT use petroleum jelly (Vaseline), vegetable shortening (Crisco), hand lotion, or baby oil, as these substances can break down latex in a matter of minutes. Be aware, however, that even the proper use of a condom is not a guarantee against the transmission of HIV.

  • Avoid alcohol, noxious chemicals, and everything else that can damage the liver.

  • Educate yourself. HIV and AIDS are complicated conditions and treatment options are constantly changing and expanding. In order to stay well, it is vital to be as informed as possible.

  • HERBAL RECOMMENDATIONS

If you are pregnant, consult with your health care provider before taking any herbal or dietary supplement. Some supplements and products recommended here may not be appropriate for use during pregnancy. The list of herbs given below (in alphabetical order) are for general use, not specifically for women who may be pregnant.

  • ALOE VERA: Aloe Vera contains carrisyn, which appears to inhibit the growth and spread of HIV. Aloe soothes the lining of the digestive tract and increases nutrient absorption. Take 1/4 cup up to 2 cups once or twice daily. Use a pure, food-grade product. Start with low dosage and work up to higher. Aloe Vera has a mild laxative-like action. If diarrhea occurs, reduce the dosage. Do not take Aloe internally if you already experience diarrhea.

  • ANDROGRAPHIS: Andrographis decreases HIV viral load and increases T-helper cell counts. For general use, practitioners of Chinese medicine believe that Andrographis affects the large intestine, lung, stomach, bladder, liver meridians or energy pathways in the body. It is thought to dispel heat (such as that associated with fever or infection) and is used primarily as a broad spectrum antibiotic and immunostimulant (stimulating the immune system) for a variety of bacterial, viral and parasitic conditions, including influenza, intestinal infections, hepatitis, pneumonia and infected wounds. Studies have shown that Andrographis can reduce the severity of cold symptoms, and in one study it was found to increase resistance to colds. The standard dosage of Andrographis is 400 mg 3 times a day. As always if you have any questions read the label or refer to your health care provider. Caution: Andrographis should not be used in cases of deficient, cold intestinal conditions. When used in long term or in extra large doses, this bitter and cold herb may damage the stomach, causing gastric distress and loss of appetite. Andrographis is also capable of producing a miscarriage and should be avoided by pregnant women unless otherwise directed by a knowledgeable practitioner.

  • ASTRAGALUS: Astragalus root is considered to have a normalizing effect on the body's functions. Astragalus is an important herb in Chinese medicine and is commonly included in Chinese cuisine. Astragalus boosts the immune system. Caution: Do not use this herb if you have a fever or a skin infection. Astragalus has been found to promote the formation of antibodies and increase the production of T-cells, on of the body's key lines of defense against disease and prevents strep infections. A recent clinical trial verified the herb's ability to boost the supply of infection-fighting white blood cells. Astragalus also has a proven ability to boost heart function and improve cardiac output. It helps relieve chest distress and breathlessness due to a weakened heart. Scientific studies of this herb have shown it to be effective on cancer and HIV patients by restoring compromised immune cells. Chinese scientists have found that Astragalus protects the body from absorption of toxic chemicals into the liver. Other research shows that people using this herb had less angina than those given heart drugs such as nifedipine. Chinese people consider Astragalus to be a better energy tonic for young people than ginseng. This herb is also used to help ward off or treat colds, improve heart function, memory, and learning, and promote the healing of wounded skin. Astragalus works well in treating anorexia, arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, malaria, kidney inflammations, painful urination, prolapsed uterus, uterine bleeding, edema, water retention, constipation, fever, and generalized weakness. Although many people take Astragalus at the onset of cold or flu symptoms, the Chinese believe taking huang qi at that time will cause the infection to go deeper. They instead use it while healthy as a defense shield against future illnesses. The recommended daily dosage of Astragalus is 9 to 30 grams of dried root boiled to make tea. There are Capsules, Tablets, Fluid Extract, Dried Root and prepared tea to be taken for this herb. For best results, consult with your health care provider for the treatment of your condition. For HIV take 500 to 1000 mg capsules 3 times daily.

  • BLACK RADISH, DANDELION ROOT, and MILK THISTLE (SILYMARIN): Herbal extracts protect and aid in repairing the liver, and also cleanse the bloodstream. the liver is the organ of detoxification and must function optimally. Use extracts as directed on the labels.

  • BLACK RADISH: Black radish is not really nutritious but has many medicinal properties. It is rich in vitamin C which makes it an interesting ally during these winter months. Vitamin C helps us fight infections and free radicals. Black radish also contains B-vitamins and sulfur. Its high content of fiber increase peristaltic movements. In addition, it contains large amounts of water. Both water and fiber help our transit and people who suffer from constipation may benefit from this vegetable. It contains a variety of chemicals that increase the flow of bile which play an important role in the digestion process. Radish help maintain a healthy gallbladder. It also has an antibacterial effect on our digestive flora. Black radish juice is used to treat cough and to fortify the body. Caution: People with gallbladder problems (stones, obstructions) should not eat too much of this vegetable as well as people with hepatic problems. Preparation: The skin of the radish is hard and must be removed. Black radishes can be eaten raw. Grated you can serve them as a salad but they should be salted and cream added to tame their strong flavor. You can also cook them like you would do with turnips. Black radish is at its best in winter.

  • BURDOCK ROOT, GOLDENSEAL, MULLEIN, RED CLOVER, and SUMA are good for cleansing the blood and lymphatic systems, for viral and bacterial infections, and for boosting the immune system. CAYENNE may also be helpful. Caution: Do not take Goldenseal on a daily basis for more than one week at a time. Do not use it during pregnancy. If you have a history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or glaucoma, use Goldenseal only under a health care provider's supervision.

  • BURDOCK ROOT: Burdock Root is used as a food and medicine in cultures all over the world. It is traditionally used for skin disorders associated with adolescence. Burdock works well when combined with Red Clover, Yellow Dock, Cleavers and Dandelion. Burdock is used for treating Acne; Athlete's Foot; Blood Cleansing; Bursitis; Calcium Deposits; Disinfectant; Eczema; Gangrene; Gout; Itching; Osteoporosis; Poison Ivy/Oak; Psoriasis; Rheumatism; Skin Disorders; Skin Irritations; & Swelling. For other formulations, read and follow product label directions.

  • CAT'S CLAW: Cats Claw studies conducted since the 1970s at research clinics in Peru, Austria, Germany, England, Hungary and Italy validate the traditional usage of Cat's Claw and indicate that this herb may be beneficial in ameliorating a host of modern day afflictions which have no answers from the orthodox medical arena. It is known to help nutritionally support the body's defenses, circulatory and gastrointestinal systems through its antioxidant and build properties. Cat's Claw enhances immune function, and has been shown to be helpful for people with AIDS and AIDS-related concerns. Cat's Claw raises T-cell counts that are below 400, but not those above 900. Cat's Claw Defense Complex from Source Naturals is a combination of Cat's Claw and other herbs, plus antioxidants such as beta-carotene, N-acetylcysteine, vitamin C and zinc. Caution: Do not use cat's claw during pregnancy or when nursing. Do not use if you have to take insulin for diabetes. Do not give to a child under 6. Cat's Claw Bark (Uncaria tomentosa) was reputed to be a super drug in the Andean region of South America. Modern chemistry has revealed the presence of oxyindole alkaloids which may, in fact, aid the immune system. Cat's claw's glycosides may be responsible for the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions of this herb. That is, Cat's Claw Bark does appear to assist immune function, reduce inflammations and help in the healing of minor injuries. Use 1 teaspoon 2 to 3 times a day depending on condition. Capsules: Take 1,000 mg twice daily.

  • CATUABA: In laboratory experiments, Catuaba causes HIV to become inactive. It prevents staph infections. Catuaba bark has analgesic, antibacterial, anti-viral, vasodilator, vasorelaxant, tonic, and central nervous system stimulant properties as well. Today, herbalists the world over considers Catuaba a highly effective aphrodisiac and central nervous system stimulant. The bark is used for sexual impotency, agitation, nervousness, exhaustion, and neurasthenia. Catuaba also helps sharpen the memory and strengthens the libido. It can also help nervous conditions such as insomnia, hypochondria, and pains related to the central nervous system. In 2002 a Brazilian company was awarded a patent for an HIV prevention formula based on an extract of the Catuaba herb. Research is still in progress. For HIV: Use the tincture and take 1/2 teaspoon in 1/4 cup water twice daily, or as directed on the label.

  • CAYENNE (CAPSICUM): Cayenne Pepper contains beta-carotene; beta-ionone, citric acid, hesperidin, imonen, lutein, and quercetin just to name a few. It also contains capsaicin, which reduces pain and inflammation. When combined with other herbs, Cayenne Pepper helps increase their effectiveness by helping them enter the blood stream faster. Capsaicin can also stimulate and then desensitize the warmth detectors in the hypothalamus gland so that a drop in body temperature is evident. This enables natives in hot southern climates like Central and South America and Africa, to tolerate the heat a lot better than we would. Cayenne Pepper has been known for its ability to aid in digestion, improve circulation, and reduce or stop bleeding from stomach ulcers. Taken internally it stimulates circulation and induces sweating to breed a fever. Some native people of Thailand believe that eating Cayenne everyday helps reduce blood cots. Herbalists recommend it to treat colds and infectious diarrhea, arthritis and rheumatism. There is scientific evidence that suggests adding Cayenne Pepper to meals boosts vitamin C levels and revs up the metabolism. This pepper is also used with lobelia to help soothe nerves. It is beneficial for the heart, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, spleen, and stomach. In naturopathic medicine, Cayenne Pepper is combined with lemon juice, and salt to relieve even the worst sore throat pain for up to 4 hours. It also fights viral infection. When applied topically in a lotion or salve Cayenne works to soothe muscle aches and pains associated with arthritis, rheumatism, backache, strains and sprains. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Capsaicin for pain caused by shingles, an adult disease that is caused by the virus that causes chickenpox in children. Such over-the-counter (OTC) creams as Zostrix or Heet contain capsaicin and are applied externally to treat rheumatic and arthritic pains, cluster headaches, diabetic foot pain, fibromyalgia, and post-herpetic nerve pain. These creams usually contain 0.025 to 0.075-percent capsaicin. In 2002 there was some research done that helped to determine Capsaicin's pain relieving effects. Creams that contain the compound lowered pain in arthritis sufferers' hands by 40-percent when used four times a day. A study done for pain from long-term shingles found that 77-percent of the people had reduced pain after using the cream for four months. The study also said that Capsaicin containing ream is less expensive and safer than other painkillers used for the same conditions. Cayenne Pepper comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For taking capsules, the recommended daily dose is 1 capsule 2 to 3 times a day. Adults and children two and above can safely use it topically 3 to 4 times a day. For treating a sore throat, combine the juice of one-half lemon or lime with one full tablespoon of salt. Stir both into one-half cup of lukewarm distilled water. Stir in one-quarter teaspoon of Cayenne pepper. Gargle as needed, but do not swallow.

  • CHINESE CUCUMBER (TRICHOSANTHES): Chinese Cucumber (Trichosanthes kirilowii) seeds and peels inhibit cancer. The root is currently being used in AIDS research. Trichosanthes Kiriloii is also known as Gua Lou, Tien Hua Fen, and Chinese Snake Gourd. It is a source of anti-HIV agent, Compound Q (GLQ223), extracted from the root. Recent in vitro laboratory studies with Compound Q showed great promise for AIDS treatment because it selectively kills only infected cells, leaving healthy cells untouched; clinical trials are not yet conclusive, however. Any statement made concerning medical conditions treated with this herb is not intended as sound medical advice. Herbs need to taken only with the guidance of a trained health care provider or established herbalist.
  • DANDELION: Dandelion leaves are commonly recommended as a food supplement for pregnant and post-menopausal women because of the numerous nutrients they contain. This plant produces a mild diuretic effect and reduces serum cholesterol levels. Dandelion root is used to improve appetite, minor digestive problems, and works as a milk laxative. Some modern naturopathic physicians believe that it can help detoxify the liver and gallbladder. Clinical trials have shown Dandelion to be effective in treating pneumonia, bronchitis and upper respiratory infections. It also helps with kidney function, pancreas, spleen, stomach, tinnitus, tonsillitis, osteoporosis, abscesses, anemia, boils, breast tumors, and cirrhosis of the liver, fluid retention, hepatitis, jaundice, rheumatism and warts. Dandelion may aid in prevention of age spots and works well in treating warts, fungus infections, and external and internal malignant growths. It is also used for treat skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and arthritis conditions. This plant is used for ulcerations of the urinary passages, obstructions of the liver, gallbladder, and spleen. The roasted Dandelion root can even be used as a coffee substitute. The German Commission E suggests the Dandelion Leaf for loss of appetite and dyspepsia, such as feeling of fullness and flatulence. This info was published in August of 92. Dandelion comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For use as a tonic, take 3 to 5 grams of the dried root or 5 to 10 ml of a tincture from the root, 3 times a day. For use as a diuretic or appetite stimulant take 4 to 10 grams of the dried Dandelion leaves in 1 cup boiling water and drink 3 times a day. For other formulations, read and follow product label directions.

  • ECHINACEA: Echinacea is an immune stimulant, and debate has been going on for the several years on whether or not someone with AIDS should use it or avoid it since people with autoimmune disorders are advised to avoid it and debate has been over whether or not AIDS is an autoimmune disorder. See MedHerb.com Materia Medica: Echinacea Contraindications for more information about Echinacea and AIDS and autoimmune disorders.

  • MEDICAL HERBALISM: MATERIA MEDICA & PHARMACY
    By Paul Bergner
    Medical Herbalism 03/31/97 9(1): 1, 11-14
    Full Article: Echinacea Contraindications

    AIDS & ECHINACEA

A debate has gone back and forth in herbal circles for at least the last ten years in the U.S. about whether echinacea is contraindicated in HIV infection or AIDS. I've been unable to locate any published case reports where echinacea worsened the symptoms of AIDS, even though AIDS patients commonly take echinacea (Kassler et al 1991; Gowan et al 1993). Objections to the use of echinacea in AIDS have been theoretical, not based on empirical evidence.

    T-4 CELL LEVELS

I was partly responsible for spreading the rumor that echinacea can lower T-4 cell counts, when I stated such a contraindication in an article in East-West magazine in August 1986. My reasoning was based on a just-published article showing that echinacea administration could lower T-4 cell counts, with T-8 cells remaining stable (Gaisbauer and Zimmerman, 1986). Since AIDS is characterized by a decline in T-4:T-8 cell ratios, it seemed reasonable to avoid echinacea. Further examination, however, shows that this trial was done with daily injections for seven days, rather than oral use. It's is now well-known that frequently-repeated injections have this effect, although it has not been noted with oral use. In fact, one clinical trial showed a steady improvement in cell-mediated immunity over a period of ten weeks with oral echinacea administration (Coeugniet and Künast 1986). Another trial showed that oral echinacea was most effective at preventing infections in those with low T-4:T-8 ratios (Schöneberger 1992). There is no evidence of any need to avoid the oral use of echinacea to maintain T-4 cell levels.

    AUTOIMMUNITY & AIDS

The second theoretical objection to using echinacea in AIDS comes from the theory that AIDS has an autoimmune component. In the 1990s the theory emerged among leading AIDS researchers that the HIV virus initiated a series of events that left parts of the immune system attacking itself. So the objection is that immune stimulation by echinacea could hasten this autoimmune attack. This autoimmune component of AIDS no longer plays a prominent role in the theory of the dynamics of the disease. Current opinion is that vital replication in massive amounts is countered by likewise large formation of T-cells, until gradually, usually over years, the virus wins the battle (Wei 1995). The declining number of T-cells leaves the immune system fatally weakened. This theory is supported by newer drug therapies which have led in the last two years to a decline in AIDS deaths in the U.S. and France, and, if this theory is correct, there is no theoretical reason to avoid echinacea on the basis of fears of stimulating autoimmunity. It may remain prudent to monitor the status of AIDS patients taking echinacea

    THE ECHINACEA CHOICE

Many AIDS infected individuals do use the herb as a way to boost their immune system and stimulate T-Cell replication (rumor is that it also will stimulate viral replication too, but this may not have any scientific fact behind it to date). If you decide to use it, use only oral administrations of the herb. Do not use injections. It is up to you to decide whether or not you wish to use the herb. However, if you do have an autoimmune disorder such as systemic lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, then you should avoid using Echinacea. Consult with your health care provider if you have questions or concerns about whether or not to use this herb as part of your nutritional therapy. Three species of the Echinacea herb are useful in medicine: Echinacea augustifolia, Echinacea purpurea, and Echinacea pallida. Research has shown that Echinacea increases production of interferon in the body, which helps increase antiviral activity against influenza (flu) and herpes, an inflammation of the skin and mouth. It is antiseptic and antimicrobial, with properties that act to increase the number of white blood cells available to destroy bacteria and slow the spread of infection. This herb is thought to be an immune stimulant. Taking this herb at the first sign of cold or flu symptoms can actually shorten the term of a cold or even abort it when caught early enough. Echinacea is usually taken at the onset of a cold or flu and continued for 7 to 14 days. When using a powdered extract, take 300 mg three times a day. The standard dosage of an alcohol tincture (1:5) is 3 to 4 ml three times daily. For Echinacea juice, take 2 to 3 ml three times a day, and the whole root, 1 to 2 grams, three times a day. Echinacea comes in many forms: Capsules, Tablets, Powder and Tincture, the best result is to follow the instructions on the package.

  • GARLIC: Garlic oil is often used to soothe the ear and as an antibiotic but most often Garlic is used as a food and herb and also to lower serum cholesterol and blood pressure and to improve circulation as well as possibly inhibiting the growth of ulcer causing bacteria.

  • GINKGO BILOBA: Ginkgo extract is good for the brain cells and circulation. In Germany, Ginkgo is the most widely prescribed herb, as it is considered to be as effective as drug treatments used for treating Alzheimer's disease and other severe forms of memory and mental function decline. Preliminary studies show that this herb is helpful in ordinary age-related memory loss as well. Germany's Commission E recommends Ginkgo for circulation problems that arise from hardening of the arteries. Some studies are showing promise in Ginkgo's ability to reverse impotence or difficulty achieving orgasm when caused by certain antidepressant drugs. Chinese research suggests this herb can improve the effectiveness of schizophrenia medications and possibly limit their side effects as well. Another study shows that Ginkgo is beneficial in relieving the bloating and fluid retention as well as the emotional disturbance associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Many people have used Ginkgo for macular degeneration, depression, complications of diabetes, and Raynaud's phenomenon; however, there is no evidence to support its effectiveness. It is also beneficial for asthma, dementia, depression, eczema, headaches, heart and kidney disorders, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). This herb can ease symptoms of altitude sickness as well. As a topical medication, Ginkgo is used to treat lesions on the fingers, toes, heels, ears, and nose caused by exposure to extreme cold, and using Ginkgo in wound dressings can improve circulation in the skin and promote quick healing. The recommended dosage of Ginkgo is 40 to 80 mg 3 times daily of a 50:1 extract standardized to contain 24-percent Ginkgo-flavone glycosides. For best results, consult with your physician for the treatment of your condition.

  • GOLDENSEAL: Goldenseal extract can be used for mouth sores. Place alcohol-free goldenseal extract on a piece of sterile gauze and apply the gauze between the lips and gums or to mouth sores before going to bed. Leave it on overnight. Sores and inflammation should heal in a few days with this treatment.

  • HORNY GOAT WEED (EPIMEDIUM): This herb stimulates testosterone production and prevents muscle wasting. Take the herbal form and dosage as recommended by your TCM practitioner. Horny Goat Weed, also known as Epimedium or Yin Yang Huo, was first described in ancient classical Chinese medicinal texts an aphrodisiac which was used to increase libido in men and women, and improve erectile function in men. Used by practitioners for over 2,000 years, Horny Goat Weed not only holds an important place in Traditional Chinese Medicine, but is gaining popularity around the world. Even though the exact way that Horny Goat Weed works remains unknown, the plant has long been employed to restore sexual fire, boost erectile function, decrease fatigue and lessen menopausal discomfort. It produces a warm almost euphoric effect on the body. Due to recent interest in Horny Goat Weed, it is expected that more investigation and research about this herb will occur. Horny Goat Weed can be consumed as a tea, encapsulated powder, or liquid herbal extract. The Chinese frequently chew the leaves. There is no definable taste so the herb can be sautéed and included with many cuisines. Read product label directions for recommended dosage. As far as it is known, Horny Goat Weed is a safe, and benign herb. Science and/or clinical research has not substantiated any attributes of Horny Goat Weed. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is unknown.

  • LICORICE and WILD YAM root are good for endocrine gland function.

  • LICORICE: Licorice (Glycyrrhzin) used for HIV / AIDS increases T-cell counts and preserves immune function. General Uses: It is taken orally (DGL form) for ulcers, heartburn (esophageal reflux), and mouth sores. Other oral uses involving the whole herb is the treatment of coughs, asthma, and chronic fatigue syndrome. In its topical form (whole herb), Licorice can be used for eczema, psoriasis, and herpes. Scientific studies suggest regular use of DGL can heal ulcers as well as some over the counter medications; however, they must be taken regularly or the ulcer will return. For Ulcer Pain try chewing two to four 380-mg tablets of DGL before meals and at bedtime in conjunction with conventional medical care. For Mouth Sores try sucking on the tablets will relieve the pain. For best results, follow the directions listed on the label. For Respiratory Problems take orally 1 to 2 grams of licorice root 3 times daily, not to exceed a week. For Eczema, Psoriasis, or Herpes, apply licorice cream to affected area twice daily. For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, this treatment must be taken under a health care provider's supervision to be given the needed dosage for the best possible effects. Caution: Do not use licorice if you have glaucoma, high blood pressure, or an estrogen-dependent disorder such as breast cancer, endometriosis, or fibrocystic breasts. Caution: Do not use licorice on a daily basis for more than seven days in a row. Avoid it completely if you have high blood pressure. Consume potassium-rich foods such as bananas or citrus juices, or take a potassium supplement daily when taking this herb. For HIV/AIDS - Take Glycyrrhizin Tablets, 50 to 75 mg daily. Use for 6 weeks, then take a 2-week break. Do not substitute deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL).

  • MAITAKE MUSHROOMS: Maitake mushrooms have unique chemicals in raw, cooked, and dried mushrooms may help boost immunity, fend off infections and fight cancer.

  • MILK THISTLE: Milk thistle extract is a potent antioxidant which prevents harm from free radicals and lends nutritional support to the liver. Milk thistle seed extract contains silymarin, a unique type of flavonoid-like compound considered the active ingredient of milk thistle.

  • MULLEIN: Herbalists recommend hot Mullein tea for asthma, colds, coughs, sore throats, and bleeding of the lungs (tuberculosis) and of the bowels, though it is used more for its soothing effects rather than its ability to heal. This herb works well as an expectorant when combined with coltsfoot and thyme. It also helps give relief to those with emphysema, hay fever, and whooping cough. Breathing the steam of boiling Mullein tea can loosen congestion and mucus. When taken with catnip, this tea works well in treating tonsillitis, chickenpox, measles and mumps. Mullein made into a syrup can be given for palpitations, irregular heartbeat, angina, and other coronary conditions. The oil of this herb can be used to soothe the pain of ear infections. Externally, Mullein can be used to treat hemorrhoids, bruises, frostbite, diarrhea, erysipelas (streptococcus infections) and migraine. Mullein comes in various forms and is an ingredient in other products. For Mullein tea, add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried leaves and flowers to 1 cup of boiling water. Drink as needed for soothing relief. For children, take a 1/2 handful of dried or cut fresh Mullein leaves and flowers in 1 quart of boiling water. Let sit for 30 minutes and strain. Add 2 tablespoons of dark honey. Drink 1/2 cup of warm tea every 3 or 4 hours. To relieve the pain of ear infections (make sure the eardrum is not punctured), squeeze several drops of Mullein oil (room-temperature) into the ear canal. This only relieves the pain, it is not a cure for ear infection. For other formulations, read and follow product label directions.

  • PAU D'ARCO: Pau D'Arco is a natural antibiotic and potentiates immune function. It is also a powerful antioxidant and is good for destroying candida in the colon. American herbalists use this herb to enhance liver function and to help lessen the effects of AIDS, allergies, cardiovascular problems, inflammatory bowel syndrome, rheumatism, tumors, and ulcers. The key ingredient in Pau D'Arco is lapachol. In the 1970s, studies of lapachol showed promise in destroying cancer cells; however, its use produced severe side effects such as blood-clotting abnormalities, anemia, and nausea, so further studies were abandoned. While high doses are not recommended for treating cancer, moderate amounts have been found to be very useful as an immune booster while fighting cancer, HIV, AIDS, bronchitis, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Pau D'Arco bark has also been used to treat fungal infections, yeast infections, smoker's cough, warts, and acne. The standard dosage for internal use is with products standardized to contain 2 to 7-percent lapachol, although an effective alternative is a product that contains 3-percent naphthoquinones. If using a tincture or liquid extract formulation as an external treatment, you may need to dilute it with a small amount of water or vegetable oil if skin becomes irritated. If skin irritation continues after dilution, discontinue use. If treating genital warts, dilution is necessary. If using as a tea, it is best to take with food to avoid stomach upset. If stomach upset continues, stop taking the herb altogether. This potent herb may pose health risks when taken internally for more than a week so it is suggested you use only for a week at a time.

  • RED CLOVER: There is no evidence that Red Clover can help those with cancer; however, its use as a cancer therapy in many parts of the world has prompted scientists to take a closer look at this herb. It is also used to treat menopausal symptoms. This herb works well in treating bronchitis, asthma, and spasmodic coughs. Red Clover is also used to treat acne, eczema, abscesses, psoriasis, insect bites, stings, and other skin diseases. In a compress it works well in treating arthritis pains and gout. As an eyewash, Red Clover herb can be used to treat conjunctivitis. Red Clover comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For a tea, take 1 cup of boiling water to 2 to 3 teaspoons of dried flowers. Drink 3 cups a day. In capsule of tablet form take 2 to 4 grams a day. In using a tincture use 2 to 4 ml 3 times a day. For other formulations, read and follow product label directions.

  • SAW PALMETTO: Saw Palmetto regulates testosterone and prevents muscle wasting. For AIDS, take tablets, 320 mg twice daily between meals. General Information: Germany's Commission E recommends Saw Palmetto as an accepted medical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). New Zealand, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, as well as other European countries, use Saw Palmetto and is regarded as the "gold standard" against which new prostate drugs must prove themselves. Saw Palmetto does not just relieve symptoms, but it actually has been shown to shrink and retard the enlarged prostate. It is also used for treating prostatitis (prostate infection). Using Saw Palmetto may also enhance sexual functioning and sexual desire. Due to its inhibiting the conversion of testosterone it may also inhibit hair loss. It is also used to treat acne, bladder inflammation, breast enlargement or reduction, bronchitis, cough, diabetes, digestive aid, diarrhea, high blood pressure, hormone imbalances (estrogen or testosterone), impotence, indigestion, menstrual pain, migraine headache, muscle or intestinal spasms, ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, polycystic ovarian syndrome, postnasal drip, and uterine or vaginal disorders. Saw Palmetto comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. The recommended dosage of Saw Palmetto is 160 mg twice a day of an extract standardized to contain 85 to 95-percent fatty acids and sterols; however, a single dose of 320 mg seems to be just as effective. Taking more than the recommended dose does not produce better results.

  • TURMERIC (CURCUMIN): Of all the herbal products available for HIV infection, curcumin (turmeric) may be the most versatile for stopping the virus at every stage of infection. It deactivates the gene in HIV that takes the virus of its dormant state. It contains chemicals that stop the action of integrase, an enzyme the virus needs to take over the DNA of an infected cell. And it prevents the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a hormone that signals HIV if there are weakened or injured cells ready to be infected. Curcumin blocks cancer causing chemicals, because it is anti-angiogenic. Curcumin inhibits COX-2 enzyme that promotes cancer growth. Curcumin stimulates the p53 gene, the defense mechanism of the body which causes tumor cell death. Curcumin inhibits the epidermal growth factor receptor site which is necessary for cancer cell growth. Turmeric is useful as an anti-inflammatory and can be used to reduce Alzheimer's debilitating effects, but there are multiple studies that suggest curcumin can have some potential in actually treating various forms of cancer. Suggested Dosage or Use: Take 6 to 12 drops tincture in liquid or under the tongue, 1 to 3 times per day. As an herbal dietary supplement, take 1 vegetable capsule, 2 to 3 times daily, preferably with meals.

  • WILD YAM: Various species of Wild Yam grows throughout North and Central America, and Asia, and has been used to treat indigestion, coughs, morning sickness, gall bladder pain, menstrual cramps, joint pain, and nerve pain. The primary, but incorrect use of Wild Yam as a source of women's hormones is based on the misconception that Wild Yam contains progesterone and DHEA. Wild Yam contains chemicals that chemists can use only as a starting point to manufacture progesterone. This herb does not contain progesterone. Some Wild Yam products have progesterone in them, but it is a synthetic progesterone that has been added to the product. Do not discount the use of Wild Yam as it can still be used to relax muscle spasms, reduce inflammations, and promote perspiration. This herb can be used for menstrual cramps or pain, menopausal symptoms, rheumatic conditions, and gallbladder complaints. Wild Yam is also used to treat colic, gallbladder disorder, hypoglycemia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), kidney stones, neuralgia, and rheumatism. Wild Yam comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For best results, read and follow product label directions.

  • DIET, NUTRITIONAL & LIFESTYLE RECOMMENDATIONS

It is important to pay special attention to meeting your nutritional needs and requirements, and keep in mind that a higher than normal intake of nutrients will probably be necessary. If you are pregnant, consult with your health care provider before taking any medication, herbal or dietary supplement. Some supplements and products recommended here, although may be recommended for your health issues, may not be appropriate for use during pregnancy and lactation.

  • Maintain good nutrition. Keep in mind that a higher than normal intake of nutrients will probably be necessary. Malabsorption, altered metabolism and weight loss are common among patients. Consider taking a whole foods Multivitamin & Multi-Mineral Complex supplement daily as a start. If you have problems with absorption problems, consider using a liquid supplement instead of pills or tablets. The vitamins and minerals in iron free multinutritional supplements play many important roles in the body: antioxidants to protect fats, cells and DNA, coenzyme precursors for energy production and metabolism, and cofactors for hormones and enzymes which regulate body processes.

  • Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Eat a diet consisting of 75-percent raw foods, organically grown if possible (avoid foods that have been treated with pesticides and other sprays), plus Lentils, Beans, Seeds, Nuts, and Whole Grains, including Brown Rice and Millet, and also non-acid forming fruit, such as Bananas, all berries, Peaches, Apples, and Melons. Raw foods are particularly important because cooking depletes foods of their vital enzymes.

  • Eat plenty of cruciferous vegetables, such as Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, and Cauliflower. Also, consume yellow and deep-orange vegetables such as Carrots, Pumpkin, Squash, and Yams for their vitamin content as well as their Antioxidant benefits.

  • Consume plenty of live juices. Juicing is extremely beneficial for supplying nutrients. Green drinks made from leafy greens such as Kale, Spinach, Beet greens, and Carrot and Beet root juice, should be consumed on a daily basis, with Garlic and Onion added. Kyo-Green is an excellent green drink product that contains Chlorophyll, Protein, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. Take this drink three time daily. (See nutrient chart and links below.) Wheatgrass is a rich nutritional food and blood cleanser. It reduces abnormal cell growth and fights unfriendly bacteria. Daily nutritional "smoothies" made of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as fresh juices are particularly good and beneficial and easy to digest. Supplemental nutrients, oils, powders and extracts can be added to the juice or smoothie for easier intake and digestion.

  • MoonDragon's Nutritional Therapy: Juicing

Daily nutritional "smoothies" made of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as fresh juices are particularly good and beneficial and easy to digest. Supplemental nutrients, oils, powders and extracts can be added to the juice or smoothie for easier intake and digestion.
  • People with AIDS who acquired the virus through sharing needles may be subject to vitamin A deficiencies. The best source of Vitamin A for people with AIDS is a diet that includes daily servings of dark-green, yellow, or orange vegetables and fruits. These supply Beta Carotene & Carotene Complex nutrients. Beta Carotene is a precursor of Vitamin A and is much safer than Vitamin A when used at higher therapeutic doses as a dietary supplement.

  • Cooking tomatoes rather than eating them raw has been shown to more than double the effectiveness of the Lycopene tomatoes contain. Lycopene, a phytochemical found in tomatoes, has been found to reduce the risk of prostate and lung cancer. The incidence of digestive cancers, such as those of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, colon, intestines, and rectum, may also be lowered with correct dosages of lycopene. Lycopene is an important member of the beta-carotene family. It is also the substance that gives tomatoes their rich red color. Recent research is demonstrating that lycopene is a more powerful antioxidant than ever realized. By neutralizing free radicals, lycopene has the ability to promote cardiovascular and prostate health, as well as support healthy cholesterol levels and overall immune function. Healthy individuals have the highest levels of lycopene in their bodies. Because the body cannot produce lycopene, dietary supplementation is particularly important to your health. A study reported in the December 1995 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found a 45-percent lower risk of prostate cancer in men who regularly consumed ten or more servings of tomatoes or tomato-based foods per week than in those who did not.

  • Drink steam-distilled or quality water (not tap water) or at least top quality bottled water, and lots of it - at least eight or ten 8-ounce glasses daily - to flush out toxins and wastes from the body. All cells and organ systems need water. Drink plenty of water even if you are not thirsty. The organs, and especially the brain, become dehydrated long before thirst develops. An adequate water supply can prevent kidney problems. This is especially important if you are taking indinavir sulfate (Crixivan).

  • Eat unripened Papaya (including a few of the seeds), fresh Pineapple (contains Bromelain), and Aspergillus oryzae (a type of fungus) frequently. These foods are good sources of proteolytic enzymes, which are crucial for proper digestion of foods and assimilation of nutrients. Without enzymes, the body cannot be supplied with the energy it needs for its activities. These food items can be combined in a blender for a smoothie drink, if desired. Additional enzymes can be added and mixed into the drink blend. Enzymes are destoyed by heat. Canned and frozen foods (unless freshly frozen) have been heat treated during processing. Use only fresh foods. Enzymes can also be taken in supplemental form. These help in digestion in the lower stomach and intestinal tract.

  • Eat Onions and Garlic, or take GarlicSupplemental Garlic. Garlic and onion powder or garlic and onion salt found in your spice rack do not count. These are typically highly processed spices used for flavoring and not nutrition. Fresh is best and raw is preferred or a quality supplemental form may be used.

  • Add Shiitake, Reishi, and Maitake mushrooms to the diet, or take them in an individual or Mushroom Complex supplement form. These are highly recommended for immune system health and can be added to your recipes (see some sample recipes below).

  • The Maitake Mushroom is not only the medicinal mushroom that leads as an anti-cancer agent specializing in breast and prostate cancers, but is also renown for it's ability to regulate blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, inflammation, and blood clots. Maitake mushroom extract may help to normalize blood sugar levels. Morel, Reishi, Shiitake, and Maitake mushrooms were touted by the ancient Chinese as superior medicines that give eternal youth and longevity. They prevent high blood pressure and heart disease, lower cholesterol, prevent fatigue and viral infections, and much more. They are found in supplement form as well as fresh. Red Reishi is called Ling Zhi and it is believed to be one of the ingredients for youth elixirs. Reishi offers botanical immune support.

Shiitake recipes are innumerable and delicious. Shiitake is also one of the most thoroughly researched and documented medicinal mushrooms. Not only do they have excellent nutritive value; they also are the source of at least two important components with proven pharmacological effects -- LEM (Lentinula edodes mycelium extract) and Lentinin. These two components have demonstrated strong anti-tumor activity.

  • AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound), is a rich source of polysaccharides such as Beta Glucan 1,3 and activated hemicellulose produced by enzymatic modification of organic medicinal mushrooms, including Shiitake.

  • DMG (N,N-Dimethyl-Glycine) is a methylated amino acid found in all cells. DMG is an antioxidant and methyl donor that has a number of beneficial effects. It has shown to have potential in increasing immune response to the flu and salmonella.

  • The vitamins and minerals in iron free Multi-Vitamins & Multi-Minerals play many important roles in the body: antioxidants to protect fats, cells and DNA, coenzyme precursors for energy production and metabolism, and cofactors for hormones and enzymes which regulate body processes.

  • Colloidal Silver has been tested by researchers and was found to kill every strain of bacteria that it was tested against and that these bacteria, many of which have become resistant to antibiotics, cause many human ailments. Available in liquid or lozenge forms.

  • Limit your intake of Soybeans and Soy products, which contain enzyme inhibitors. Do not completely eliminate them from your diet, however, as they are valuable sources of Protein. Take soybean products at a different time than your dietary enzyme supplements. Do not take these supplements or products together. Consider taking a Protein Supplement if more protein is needed in your diet.

  • Eliminate from your diet colas, foods with additives and colorings, junk foods, peanuts, processed foods, saturated fats, salt, sugar and sugar products, white flour, all animal proteins, and anything containing caffeine.

  • Take supplemental Fiber daily. Alternate between Psyllium Husks and freshly ground Flaxseeds. Take psyllium with a glass of water and drink it down before it thickens. Be sure to drink plenty of water whenever taking supplemental fiber products. Note: Always take supplemental fiber separately from other supplements and medications.

  • Exercise caution in your choice of foods so as to avoid exposure to foodborne illness. Food poisoning can be very dangerous for people with HIV or AIDS infection.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Food Poisoning

  • Try using Bee Propolis and Royal Jelly to fight bacterial infections invading the lungs, mouth, throat, and mucous membranes.

  • Take Vitamin E. It is a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals and promotes immune function and helps support cardiovascular health. This vitamin may be able to slow the progression of HIV infection to AIDS. According to a report in the journal AIDS, those men with the highest blood levels of vitamin E experienced a 34-percent reduction in the risk of disease progression when compared with men who had the lowest blood levels of this vitamin. Studies in both humans and animals have shown that Vitamin E Supplements in doses up to 800 IU per day can increase the immune response to foreign particles.

  • To boost the body's ability to fight harmful free radicals, take Glutamine, Grapeseed extract, or Pycnogenol and Vitamin C. Among people with very low T-cell counts (under 200), Glutamine Supplements (200 mg daily) greatly increase survival time. L-Glutamine, the free amino acid, is the single most abundant amino acid present in skeletal muscle. L-Glutamine may support muscle tissue by limiting the degradation of protein through nitrogen retention, glycogen synthesis, and protein synthesis. L-Glutamine may also assist in the fueling and detoxifying of the brain. Thus, L-Glutamine has been dubbed "the thinker's amino". L-Glutamine has muscle and brain tissue supporting qualities. Glutamine is an inexpensive and non-toxic treatment that works by supplying an amino acid needed for the production of Glutathione (GSH), the body's principle free radical fighter. Glutathione, a natural sulfer-containing peptide, protects muscles from oxidative stress, acts in antioxidant and detoxicant systems and is also involved in amino acid transport across cell membranes. Studies show that Grapeseed extract's antioxidant compounds protect cells against free radicals and help to improve circulation and strengthen blood vessels. Pycnogenol helps support the collagen structure of blood vessels and other tissues throughout the body. Pycnogenol is a Phytochemical antioxidant activity. Vitamin C is a GSH cofactor, or a substance that can make GSH more effective. Take at least 200 mg daily of Vitamin C, or eat fresh fruits and vegetables every day.

  • Take 150 milligrams of Lipoic Acid 3 times a day. This free-radical fighter slows the destructive action of T-suppressor cells, and is toxic to HIV. Lipoic Acid is critical in glycolysis and in the Kreb's cycle, two complex biochemical processes essential for the generation of cellular energy. The liver relies on these processes to meet its large energy demands. Lipoic Acid is used extensively in Germany to enhance liver function and treat diabetes. R-Lipoic Acid is a natural form of lipoic acid that your body can synthesize and safely metabolize. R-Lipoic Acid may be better absorbed and more effective as an antioxidant than alpha-lipoic acid. R-lipoic acid by itself may be 10 times more effective than other forms of lipoic acid. R-Lipoic Acid has been called the mitochondrial antioxidant because it is a key component of mitochondrial dehydrogenase complexes, which may help slow the natural aging process in animals. R-lipoic acid may be more effective than other forms of lipoic acid in increasing or maintaining levels of other antioxidants that may decline with age, including CoQ10, vitamins C and E, and glutathione, according to animal research. Alpha Lipoic Acid is central to recycling other antioxidants like Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and GSH glutathione. By sparing their destruction, Alpha Lipoate extends their antioxidant power. Being both water and fat soluble, lipoic acid is the universal antioxidant that can easily function in both cellular membranes and fluid media within and outside the cell.

  • Turmeric is the main anti-inflammatory herb of Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurveda uses turmeric to treat diseases of the liver and to relieve inflammation. Laboratory tests have found that turmeric is antioxidant and antimutagenic, that is, it potentially helps prevent new cancers that are caused by chemotherapy or radiation used to treat existing cancers. Turmeric in the diet may help prevent the pain of arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis. A volatile oil in the spice is as effective in relieving pain, under laboratory conditions, as equal amounts of steroids. The antioxidants in turmeric fight atherosclerosis by deactivating platelet-activating factor (PAF). This protein seals leaks in blood vessels by stimulating the growth of a protein net on which a cholesterol plaque can form. Curcumin in turmeric helps prevent hardening of the arteries in people who have diabetes, and also helps stop the loss of protein through the kidneys. In the laboratory, the antioxidants in turmeric kill cultures of cancer cells from the skin, bloodstream, and ovaries. Curcumin may stop the action of a liver enzyme that activates environmental toxins into carcinogenic forms, and may be especially useful in deactivating the carcinogens in cigarette smoke and chewing tobacco. Turmeric in the diet increases the production of enzymes that digest fats and sugars, and stop cholesterol from forming gallstones. Turmeric prevents the release of histamine in the stomach, quelling nervous stomach and counteracting food allergies and it fights gum inflammation by halting the action of a gene that creates irritant chemicals. Without the irritation, bacteria cannot find a place to grow, and the absence of bacteria reduces both bad breath and gingivitis. Of course, if you use turmeric to prevent bad breath, you should not eat curries made with garlic. As is the case with so many herbs, turmeric should be used in moderation. Too much turmeric used for extended periods of time may cause stomach distress. Since turmeric is included in Ayurvedic formulas for birth control, women trying to become pregnant should limit their consumption of the herb, and it should be avoided entirely while pregnant. Excessive use of turmeric should also be avoided in people with congestive heart failure. The curcumin in turmeric activates a gene called p53. This gene deactivates cancer cells, but it also deactivates damaged cells in the heart.

    LIFESTYLE RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Determine what food allergies or sensitivities may be present. The best way to do this is to have yourself tested by a health care professional or allergist. It is important to eliminate allergic foods from the diet because they wreak havoc in the body, causing damage to the immune system.

  • Avoid allergens that trigger allergies. Allergies increase the speed at which HIV infection becomes AIDS. High levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE), the antigen the body makes in response to allergens, make progression to AIDS roughly four times more likely in any 12 month period. In addition to working with the health care provider to reduce the risk of allergic reactions to the drugs in your treatment schedule, avoid exposure to airborne as well as foodborne allergens.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Allergies

  • Avoid alcohol, noxious chemicals, and anything else that can damage the liver. Do not smoke, and stay away from secondhand smoke. Avoid recreational drug use. Some drugs, notably cocaine and marijuana, may not affect HIV infection itself but can disable T-cell response to other kinds of infections.

  • Obtain as much fresh air and rest as possible, and moderate amounts of sunshine. Get more exercise. While immune suppression through the use of powerful drugs is harmful to people with HIV, immune suppression through strenuous exercise seems to help. People with HIV who exercise tend to have fewer complications and to progress much more slowly to AIDS. As at a local health club about designing an appropriate exercise regimen.

  • Avoid factors that deplete the body's store of GSH. Ultra-violet radiation (usually from sunlight), or the consumption of alcoholic beverages or acetaminophen-containing drugs (like Tylenol) can lower GSH levels.

  • Learn how to counteract stress. Use relaxation and meditation techniques to help with daily stress.

Anyone with HIV or AIDS can make a major contribution to his or her survival and quality of life by getting into an early treatment program, especially a program in which immune enhancement is encouraged. The person with AIDS needs higher amounts of all nutrients than normal because malabsorption is a common problem. Those at risk of becoming infected with HIV or of developing AIDS can also be helped through the Nutritional Program found in the links below. For all nutritional supplements, it is strongly recommended that the use of sublingual and injectable forms, as well as rectal suppositories, if available, for improved absorption. Before starting on any type of therapy, consult with your health care provider.

Amazon: Nutrition and AIDS, Second Edition (Modern Nutrition)
By Ronald Ross Watson, 2nd Edition Print Replica (Kindle Edition). Evidence shows that nutritional supports can help maintain health in the HIV-infected patient by replacing lost nutrients, compensating for nutritional damage done by the retrovirus-induced immunodeficiency, and stimulating the remaining immune system and cells for better host defenses. This new edition of Nutrition and AIDS is a timely look at what dietary materials, supplements, and foods may benefit or treat AIDS, as well as nutritional deficiencies that can accelerate progression to AIDS and death. It offers a variety of alternative dietary and herbal remedies, including some that have been tested in animals and humans to stimulate immune defense or compensate for changes induced by HIV infection. In addition, it surveys items that may accelerate nutritional depletion in AIDS patients, such as cocaine, alcohol, and tobacco use. It includes data from animal studies modeling AIDS and nutrition, studies not yet done in humans but applicable to them.
