FUNGAL INFECTION DESCRIPTION
Fungus refers to a type of organism that lives on all of us. Usually this organism is harmless most of the time, but sometimes, when conditions are just right, it can cause a problem. The problem is called a fungal infection. Although some people may be embarrassed when they get this type of infection, a fungus rarely spreads below the skin or mucous membranes and it is usually easy to treat and eliminate.
Some types of fungal infections discussed here include Athlete's Foot, Jock Itch, Ringworm, and Candida.
FUNGUS INFECTION FREQUENT SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
Athlete's foot (Tinea pedis) is type of fungal infection that usually appears between the toes but can also affect the bottom or sides of the feet. The fungus most commonly attacks the feet because the shoes create a warm, dark, and humid environment which encourages fungus growth. The warmth and dampness of areas around swimming pools, showers, and locker rooms, are also breeding grounds for fungi. Because the infection was common among athletes who used these facilities frequently, the term "athlete's foot" became popular.
Not all fungus conditions are athlete's foot. Other conditions, such as disturbances of the sweat mechanism, reaction to dyes or adhesives in shoes, eczema, and psoriasis, also may mimic athlete's foot.
Athlete's foot has symptoms that include dry, cracked, and itchy skin between the toes. Some people also have red, scaly blisters on the bottoms and sides of their feet. There may also be a watery discharge from the blisters. When blisters break, small raw areas of tissue are exposed, causing pain and swelling. Itching and burning may increase as the infection spreads. Athlete's foot may spread to the soles of the feet and to the toenails. It can be spread to other parts of the body, notably the groin and underarms, by those who scratch the infection and then touch themselves elsewhere.
MoonDragon's Health & Wellness Disorders: Athlete's Foot
Jock itch (Tinea cruris) is a fungal infection of the groin and upper thighs. This is similar to athlete's foot and is caused by a tiny fungus which grows best in dark, damp conditions. It is a common fungus which often infects athletes or other people who perspire heavily or are obese. (This usually occurs only in boys and men, but girls and women can experience this infection as well.) It can be transmitted to your groin from your feet.
The symptoms of jock itch include a chafed, irritated skin rash with elevated edges located in the groin, inner thighs, pubic or anal areas. It too is itchy and often feels like it is burning. It usually happens when you have been perspiring heavily, during sports or hot, humid weather. It is pretty common, especially if you play sports where you sweat and wear athletic equipment.
Ringworm (Tinea capitis) is a type of fungal infection of the hair, skin, or nails. Ringworm is most common in children. When it's on the skin, tinea usually begins as a small reddish area with small red spots the size of a pea that grow to a size of about 1/4 inch in diameter or larger. As the spots expand, the centers tend to heal and clear while the borders are raised, red, scaly, giving them a ring-like appearance. It is often itchy and flaky.
As the ringworm infection grows, it spreads out in a circle or ring. Tinea is often called "ringworm" because it may look like tiny worms are under the skin (but of course, they are not, it has nothing to do with worms!).
Because the fungi that cause ringworm live on different parts of the body, they are named for the part of the body they infect. Scalp ringworm is found on the head, and body ringworm affects arms, legs, or the chest. Ringworm of the head begins as a small pimple that becomes larger. The hair in the infected area can become brittle and break off, leaving scaly, flaky patches of baldness. But do not sweat it - it will grow back!
If you have ringworm on your arms, legs, or chest, you may see small, reddish spots that grow into large rings. Like other fungal infections, ringworm can be very itchy. It can infect humans and also animals such as cats and dogs, and the infections may be acquired from pets as well as from infected children.
Candida is a yeast-like fungus. This fungus most often affects the skin around the nails or the soft, moist areas around body openings. Diaper rash in babies is a form of candidal infection, as is thrush, the white patches most often found in the mouths of kids and babies. Older girls and women may develop another form of candidal infection in the area in and around the vagina. This is called a yeast infection. Candida, the yeast-like fungus, causes the skin around the infected area to itch. The skin may also be red and swollen.
Fungal infection of the mouth is referred to as oral thrush, a condition in which creamy-looking white patches form on the tongue and the mucous membranes of the mouth. If the patches are scraped off, bleeding may result. This condition is most common in infants and in those with compromised immune systems.
MoonDragon's Pediatric Disorders: Thrush
Nursing mothers sometimes develop a candida infection of the nipples that causes severe pain while feeding. This can be further complicated if the baby develops oral thrush since it can lead to a "ping-pong" effect in which mother and baby continually reinfect each other.
NAIL FUNGAL INFECTION
Fungal infection under the nails (paronychia) or between the toes may cause discoloration and swelling, and the nails may become raised above the surface of the nail bed.
VAGINAL FUNGAL INFECTION
In fungal infection of the vagina (yeast infection), a cheesy discharge present, usually accompanied by intense itching.
MoonDragon's Women's Health Disorders: Candida (Yeast Infections)
RECURRENT FUNGAL INFECTION & THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Recurrent fungal infections are a common sign of depressed immune function. The people most likely to be affected are those who have diseases such as diabetes or cancer, or who are infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Women who use oral contraceptives and people taking antibiotics are at higher risk as well, as are people who are obese and/or perspire heavily.
FUNGUS INFECTION CAUSES
Lots of people, including children, get fungal infections. Children love to share and hang out together, which makes the likelihood of a fungal infection spreading to other children and or adults. Some of these infections are extremely contagious, which means they easily spread from person to person. Touching someone that has tinea, or doing something as simple as sharing a comb or hairbrush, can spread the fungus from one person to another. Because fungi need a warm, dark, and humid place to grow, public showers, pools, locker rooms, and even the warmth of shoes and socks can give fungi the perfect opportunity to strike. When a person walks around barefoot or does not change sweaty socks, there is also a chance of infection.
Taking antibiotics can also cause some people to get a fungal infection. Antibiotics get rid of germs that make us sick, but they can also kill many of the "harmless" bacteria in our body. These harmless bacteria normally fight with the fungus for a place to live, but when antibiotics kill them, the fungus is free to grow. That is why it is important to listen to your health care providers about using antibiotics.
Sometimes, a fungus may infect a person if they have an immune system disorder (this means their bodies cannot fight certain types of infections). This is rare, but it does happen.
Fungi, which is more than one fungus, can be found on different parts of the body. Certain types of fungi (most commonly called candida and tinea) can infect the skin and/or mucous membranes; they also grow under the nails, between the toes, or on internal surfaces of the colon and other organs. Fungal infection of the skin is most common in places where skin tends to be moist and one skin surface is in contact with another, such as the groin area (jock itch) and between the toes (athlete's foot). A type of scalp infection known as tinea capitis is found mainly in school children, although adults also may be affected. Moist, possibly itchy, red patches anywhere on the body can indicate fungal infection. In babies, a fungal infection can manifest itself as diaper rash that makes the skin bright red in light-skinned babies and darker brown in dark-skinned babies.

FUNGUS INFECTION CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL TREATMENT
Getting rid of a fungal infection is not all that difficult. Your health care provider may decide to scrape a small amount of the irritated skin or clip off a piece of hair or nail and look at it under a microscope. Once your health care provider knows what kind of infection you have, there are special antifungal creams and shampoos that can help to get rid of it. Sometimes your health care provider will prescribe a medication to take by mouth for many weeks. Make sure you take the medicine for as long as your health care provider tells you. Most of the medications obtained in a drug store are a temporary treatment. The fungal infection often returns after treatment. For best results, include a positive life-style change and nutritional program with your other treatments. Here are some general suggestions that may help to prevent reoccurrences of a fungal infection:
It is not easy to prevent athlete's food because it is usually contracted in dressing rooms, showers, and swimming pool locker rooms where bare feet come in contact with the fungus. However, you can do much to prevent infection by practicing good foot hygiene. Walk away from athlete's foot by following these simple steps:
- Wash your feet everyday with soap and water.
- Dry your feet carefully and completely, especially between your toes.
- Wear sandals or shower shoes when walking around in locker rooms, public pools, and public showers.
- Change your shoes and socks regularly to decrease moisture, and wear clean socks and if they get wet or damp, be sure to change them as soon as you can to decrease moisture and to help prevent the fungus from infecting the feet.
- Use a powder (talcum or antifungal) on your feet to help reduce perspiration.
You may love to play sports and not be able to avoid jock itch, but you can help to keep it away when you:
- Wear clean, cotton underwear and loose-fitting pants. Avoid synthetic fabrics. Loose cotton clothing allows perspiration to evaporate and skin to breathe.
- Never use anyone else's towels or clothes. The fungus which causes jock itch can be spread easily between people.
- Avoid rough textured clothing.
- An alkaline environment encourages the fungus to grow. Since most soap is alkaline (the opposite of acidic), too much scrubbing with soap will make jock itch worse. Wash, but make sure to rinse all soap off your skin and then dry well.
- Keep your groin area clean and dry. Talcum powder may reduce wetness and chafing.
Ringworm is spread by direct contact with a person or animal infected with the fungus. It can be spread with contact with articles (such as combs or clothing) or surfaces which have been contaminated with the fungus. A child with ringworm is infectious as long as the fungus remains present in the skin lesion. The fungus is no longer present when the lesion starts to shrink. Ringworm is widespread around the world and in the United States.
- Avoid using anyone else's personal care items, such as combs, hair brushes, hair ornaments.
- Avoid wearing other people's clothing, especially hats, or other items that may have come into contact with an infection, such as pillows, blankets, and towels.
- Wash hands with soap and water after contact with an infected individual to avoid spreading the infection.
Yeast infections can be avoided, too, if you:
- Do not hang out in wet swimsuits; change as soon as possible.
- Wear clean, cotton underwear.
- Wash regularly with soap and water. Personal hygiene is important.
- Follow nutritional guidelines and suggestions below.
Berberine is a phytochemical that has antifungal action. Goldenseal, a berberine-containing herb works against a variety of fungi, including candida. Bloodroot, another herb that contains berberine, has shown action against skin fungi and is also an anti-inflammatory. Other herbs that contain berberine and are recommended for fungal infections include Barberry, Oregon Grape
Goldenseal (hydrastis canadensis) is a fresh or dried rhizome that has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is used for infections and candidiasis (e.g. thrush). A decoction (as a gargle for sore throats), capsules, liquid tincture may be used internally or externally in a wash. Caution: Goldenseal should not to be taken if pregnant, breast-feeding or suffering from high blood pressure. Goldenseal should not be taken internally on a daily basis for more than one week at a time, as it may disturb normal intestinal flora. Use it with caution if you have allergies to ragweed.
To support the immune system during an outbreak of fungal infection, use Echinacea Tincture. Caution: Rare but high doses (over 1000 mg) can sometimes cause dizziness or nausea. For best effect the herb should not be taken for more than 1 to 2 weeks at a time.
Black Walnut Green Hull (Juglone nigra), can be used fight fungal infections, ringworm and perhaps certain types of cancer.

It may also be used to purify drinking water when camping or traveling to foreign countries. Grapefruit Seed Extract (125 mg is equivalent to 12 to 15 drops of GSE liquid concentrate) can be combined with the extracts of echinacea and artemisia annua. Grapefruit Seed Extract is a safe herbal solution for many forms of infection. Grapefruit Seed Extract, in its different forms, is used for different applications. Skin Ointment with GSE can be used topically for such things as scrapes, scratches and cuts. It can also be used on the lips and in the mouth on cold sores and canker sores.
Grapefruit Seed Extract is rapidly becoming the #1 safe herbal solution for chronic vaginal and intestinal yeast infections (Candida) and thrush. One health care provider has reported success with 295 patients out of 297 being treated for chronic yeast and parasitic infections. In a test of 20 patients with vaginal yeast infection, 15 had relief of their symptoms in only 3 days after douching with grapefruit seed extract every 12 hours. A GSE douche is used for vaginal infections and capsules or liquid drops mixed with juice for internal infections. Grapefruit Seed Extract is safe with no side effects and as a liquid may be used as a gargle and may be swallowed. And it has dozens of additional healthy benefits. It's a strong anti-bacterial but does not seem to hurt beneficial bacteria. Citricidal is potent antifungal agent. Made from an extract of grapefruit seeds and widely on sale in health stores, it contains beneficial bioflavonoids, including a substance called Hesperidin, which is also a natural immune booster. As well as giving it internally as directed on the bottle, you can also apply it topically the affected area.
Garlic, eaten raw or in food, rubbed on skin, tablets or capsules is an anti-fungal, antibiotic, anti-parasitic remedy. Caution: Garlic should not be taken with anti-clotting medication. Avoid if breastfeeding as can cause colic in babies. Apply Honey and crushed Garlic, alternately, to the affected area.
Garlic contains Scordiin, a unique sulfur compound which may be responsible for many of garlic's renowned benefits. Garlic supplements have been the subject of numerous studies in the past decade and have been endorsed by celebrities and athletes alike. Garlic (Allium Sativum) may be beneficial for detoxification, immune response, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, heart disease, circulation, fatty deposits, arteriosclerosis, arthritis, asthma, cancer, candidia, infections of the eyes, ears, throat, respiratory infections, coughs, hoarseness, colds & flu, insomnia, digestion, fungal infections, viral infections, and colon health.

Pau d'Arco Tea (Purple Lapacho) is a delicious, all-natural way to reduce Inflammation and pain and to boost immunity. Drink 3 cups of Pau D'Arco tea daily. Pau D'Arco, taken in tea or tablet form, is good for treating candida infections. For toenail or fingernail fungus, soak nails in a mixture of Pau D'Arco and Goldenseal. In a side pan, make Pau D'Arco tea using 6 tea bags and a gallon of water. Bring to a boil, then allow to cool to a very warm but tolerable temperature. Add the contents of 4 capsules of Goldenseal. Soak your feet or hands in this mixture for 15 minutes twice a day.

Thyme is an antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, antispasmodic, nervine, carminative, diaphoretic, and expectorant. Thyme is a common household spice that has many medicinal values. It helps to clear respiratory difficulties, including bronchial problems, whooping cough, laryngitis, catarrh, and sore throat. It also treats the digestive system for stomach cramps, diarrhea, heartburn, chronic gastritis, flatulence, colic, and diminished appetite. Taken at the beginning of cold or flu, it will induce perspiration. It may be used as an antiseptic mouthwash and as a skin wash to destroy fungal infections (such as Athlete's Foot and skin parasites). As a local irritant, it increases the blood flow to the surface; it can be used in baths for neurasthenia, rheumatism, paralysis, bruises, swellings, and sprains. In a salve it is helpful for shingles. Caution: Excessive use can lead to poisoning symptoms and overstimulation of the thyroid gland. No more than 1 ounce per day is suggested. Use 1 teaspoon 2 to 3 times a day depending on condition.

Horopito, or Pepper Tree (Pseudowintera Colorata), a shrub native to New Zealand, contains polygodial, an antifungal agent that has been shown to act against bacteria as well. The leaves can be bruised, steamed, and applied topically to treat skin diseases such as ringworm. Licaria Puchuri-Major, a medicinal plant found in the Brazilian rainforest has been found to augment the antifungal activities of polygodial and increase its effectiveness against fungal infection. Kolorex is an herbal product that has been shown to be effective in treating ringworm and tinea fungi infections. It is available in both capsule and cream form.
DIET & NUTRITION RECOMMENDATIONS
Eat a diet of 60 to 70-percent raw foods. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and moderate amounts of broiled fish and broiled skinless chicken.
Do not eat any foods containing sugar or refined carbohydrates. Fungi thrive on sugar. The most healing diet for this condition is one that is fruit-free, sugar-free, and yeast-free.
Eliminate those foods from the diet that tend to promote secretion of mucus, especially meat and dairy products.
Avoid cola drinks, grains, processed foods, and fried, greasy foods.
See Fasting and follow the program.
If the nails are affected, apply Aerobic 07 drops directly on the area. Soak infected hands or feet in a solution of Aerobic 07 drops and Pau D'Arco tea daily for 15 minutes. When not soaking them, keep the nails dry and clean.
If the infection persists, then switch to Colloidal Silver. A colloid is a substance that consists of ultra-fine particles suspended in a different medium, (in this case, water). The particles are so small - 0.001 to 0.0001 of a micron in diameter - that colloidal silver is completely safe to use both internally and externally. Although nobody knows exactly how it works, the most accepted theory is that it disables enzymes that many forms of bacteria, fungi, and viruses need for their own metabolism and survival. While most antibiotics disinfect only about half a dozen germs, silver has been reported to disinfect well over 600 different strains. Even better, infections that can become resistant to antibiotics cannot develop the same defence against silver, making it an excellent alternative to antibiotics. In fact, in more recent laboratory tests, scientists found colloidal silver was effective against many of the more insidious organisms that affect humans, including Staphylococcus Aureus, Salmonella Typhi and Candida Globata.
Use Silica to help prevent dampness, and so change the conditions that these fungi thrive on. It is best taken internally the form of Biochemic Tissue Salts, which by-pass the digestive system and so are more easily absorbed by the body.
Germanium raises the level of activity of various organs (facilitates oxygen uptake) and helps to expel harmful pollutants and arrest germ activity. Germanium serves as an electrical semiconductor, helping correct distortions in the electrical fields of the body. Germanium is still being researched for all its possible supplementary applications. Poor immune system, low energy and cancer indicate germanium deficiencies. It is believed to act as an anti-cancer agent and is effective for viral, bacterial and fungal infections. Use 1 teaspoon ionic germanium daily.
Lactobacillus Acidophilus taken as a dietary supplement may help to detoxify and to rebuild a balanced intestinal flora. Primadophilus Bifidus is designed to deliver helpful Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium bacteria to the gut. These microorganism strains are essential to maintaining healthy intestinal flora. Take daily as part of the nutritional regime. For quicker action to replace necessary "friendly" bacteria in the colon, use L.Bifidus retention enema. See Enemas and L.Bifidu Enema for more information.
B Vitamins are precursors of coenzymes involved in the conversion of cellular energy, manufacture of hormones and proteins, and repair and maintenance of nerve structures. They also function as lipotropics which converts fats to other useful products.
For ringworm, mix 1/2 Clove crushed raw Garlic with 1/4 cup of vegetable oil. Coat the affected area with Honey, then apply the garlic mixture (avoid healthy skin). Cover it loosely with sterile gauze or a cotton cloth that allows air to penetrate. Do not cover it tightly with adhesive tape or a plastic bandage. These promote dampness. Leave in place for 4 hours.
To treat ringworm, use a sterile pad and apply Colloidal Silver to the affected area. Hands and feet can also be soaked in this solution, a natural antibiotic that destroys some 650 different microorganisms. Silver Biotics is a colloidal silver product that was tested by researchers and was found to kill every strain of bacteria that it was tested against and that these bacteria, many of which have become resistant to antibiotics, cause many human ailments.
If you have been treating a fungal infection on your own and you develop symptoms of a worsening infection, such as increased redness and swelling or fever, consult your health care provider. You may have developed a bacterial infection on top of the fungal infection.
For fungal infections underneath the fingernails, soak your nails in a mixture of 50-percent white distilled vinegar and 50-percent pure water for 10 to 20 minutes daily.
For vaginal infection, an Apple Cider Vinegar douching solution can be made by diluting vinegar with water. For vaginal yeast infection (and vaginitis) relief from the itching, a woman can sit in a pan of warm water (called a sitz bath). Add 3 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar for every 1 liter (about 1 quart) of water in the pan. For the bathtub, fill the bath to hip depth and add 3 cups of Apple Cider Vinegar. Soak in the pan or tub for 20 minutes, allowing the water to flow into the vagina. She can sit in this liquid 2 times a day until she feels better. She should not have sexual relations until she feels better.
There are numerous topical Anti-Fungal Preparations available in drug stores. However, many holistic health care practitioners believe that garlic is safer and works just as well, if not better, than these drugs.
Keep the skin clean and dry. Expose the affected area to the air as much as possible.
Wear clean cotton clothing and underwear. Do not wear clothing or use towels more than once without washing them, preferably in hot water with chlorine bleach added.
Try not to allow an infected area of the body to come in contact with healthy skin. People who have fungal infections in one area often also have infections in other areas.
If you are nursing a baby and your baby has thrush, or you develop sharp, shooting pains during feedings, or both, consult both your child's and your own health care provider. You may have a fungal infection. Both you and your baby should be treated to ensure a cure.
Corticosteroids and oral contraceptives should be avoided, as they may upset the normal and healthy balance of the body.
