DESCRIPTION
EYESTRAIN
Eyestrain causes a dull, aching sensation around and behind the eyes that can expand into a generalized headache. It may feel painful or fatiguing to focus the eyes. Eyestrain is commonly a result of overuse of the eyes for activities requiring close, precise focus, such as reading or computer work. People in certain occupations, such as jewelers, are particularly prone to eyestrain. Wearing improper lenses (whether the wrong prescription or an incorrectly made pair of eyeglasses) can also cause eyestrain.
Acute closed-angle glaucoma can cause pain around the eyes as well, but the sensation is usually sharp and throbbing and accompanied by other symptoms. Most other eye disorders, even serious ones, cause little or no discomfort.
PHOTOPHOBIA
Photophobia is an abnormal inability of the eyes to tolerate light; exposure to light hurts the eyes. It is more common in people with light colored eyes, and usually is not a serious problem. For many people, photophobia is not due to any underlying disease. In some cases, however, severe photophobia may be associated with eye problems such as irritation or damage to the cornea, acute glaucoma, or uveitis. It can also be a symptom of developing measles. It can cause severe eye pain even in relatively low light.
Causes of photophobia include:
- Excessive wearing of contact lenses, or wearing badly fitted contact lenses.
- Eye disease, injury, or infection (such as chalazion, episcleritis, glaucoma).
- Burns to the eye.
- Common migraine headache.
- Meningitis.
- Acute iritis or uveitis (inflammation inside eye).
- Corneal abrasion.
- Corneal ulcer.
- Drugs such as amphetamines, atropine, cocaine, cyclopentolate, idoxuridine, phenylephrine, scopolamine, trifluridine, tropicamide, and vidarabine. Excessive alcohol use (typical hangover symptom).
- Eye testing in which the eyes have been dilated
Home care of Light Sensitivity: The discomfort of light sensitivity can be reduced by avoiding sunlight, closing the eyes, wearing dark glasses, or darkening the room. However, the cause for the light sensitivity should be determined, since proper treatment may cure the problem. Seek urgent medical attention if pain is moderate to severe in low-light conditions.
Call your health care provider if light sensitivity is severe. For example, if you need to wear sunglasses indoors.
Also call if the sensitivity occurs with headaches, red eye or blurred vision or does not go away in a day or two.
The health care provider will perform a physical examination, including an eye exam. You may be asked the following questions:
- When did the light sensitivity begin?
- Does it hurt all the time or just sometimes?
- How bad is it?
- Do you need to wear dark glasses or stay in dark rooms?
- Did a health care provider recently dilate your pupils?
- Do you use contact lenses?
- Have you used soaps, lotions, cosmetics, or other chemicals around your eyes?
- Have you been around dust, wind, sun, pollens, or chemicals?
- Does anything make the sensitivity better or worse?
- Have you been injured?
- What medicines do you take?
- What other symptoms do you have?
Tell your health care provider if you have any of these symptoms:
- Pain in the eye.
- Headache.
- Nausea.
- Neck stiffness.
- Blurred vision.
- Sore or wound in eye.
- Redness.
- Itching.
- Swelling
- Dizziness.
- Numbness or tingling elsewhere in the body.
- Changes in hearing.
The following tests may be done to help with diagnosis of underlying conditions:
- Corneal scraping.
- Slit-lamp examination.
- Lumbar puncture.

HOLISTIC RECOMMENDATIONS & NUTRITION
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EYE STRAIN
SUNLIGHT
In sunlight, wear sunglasses that keep out ultraviolet rays. Indoors, use adequate lighting. Sun exposure counts for 90 percent of wrinkles so use extra UV protection.
TAKE A BREAK AND REST YOUR EYES
Rest your eyes periodically to prevent eyestrain, especially if you work at a computer. For quick relief of occasional itchy or tired eyes, lie down, close your eyes, and place a cold washcloth (compress) over your eyes. Relax for 10 minutes or longer, replacing the compress with a fresh one as necessary. This often helps to alleviate discomfort and can be used as often as necessary.
Take measures to avoid eyestrain. Try to vary your tasks so that your eyes change focusing distance every so often. When doing close work for prolonged periods, take periodic "focus breaks." Every 20 minutes or so, look away from your work and focus your eyes on something in the distance for a minute or two.
You can usually tell when someone has been sitting for a long stretch in front of a computer monitor - they tend to suffer from Dry-Eye Syndrome: red, itchy, irritated eyes. Now researchers at Japan's National Institute of Industrial Health have found that monitor placement may be the culprit. If your monitor is level with your gaze or raised above it, the higher angle of your head reduces the volume of tears produced by your tear ducts, which results in eye irritation. Lowering the monitor's position (and the angle of your head) increases tear production and soothes tired eyes. The researchers also claim lowered monitors reduce neck-muscle fatigue, and improve attention span and the overall comfort of computer users.
Avoid too much alcohol, sun and try not to smoke. Protect your eyes against strain, glare, dust and dirt.
SLEEP IS IMPORTANT
Get sufficient sleep. Fatigue promotes eyestrain. To reduce dark circles try to sleep an hour earlier than normal, drink more water and reduce your intake of dairy products. Lack of sleep, exercise and fresh air result in dull tired eyes, as does a bad diet.
To reduce puffiness around the eyes - try sleeping with an extra pillow and lie on your back to prevent fluids from pooling around the eyes.
Do not drag or pull the delicate area around the eyes when you are cleansing instead dab your creams or gels gently.
NUTRIENTS FOR THE EYES
For clear sparkling eyes drink plenty of water. It is important to keep the body hydrated to prevent dry eyes and to flush toxins from the body.
Get proper nutrition for your eyes through diet and supplements. Use herbs that support blood vessels and are antioxidant. Eat a diet rich in vitamin A like citrus fruits, apricots, green leafy vegetables, carrots, egg yolks, and butter.
- CAROTENOIDS: These yellow, red and orange pigments are antioxidants that protect tissue from free radicals. Beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A, is the primary pigment in the retina. Carrots, cantaloupe, peaches and sweet potatoes all contain beta-carotene. Lutein and zeaxanthin, found in pumpkin, leafy greens and red peppers, absorb UV rays and protect the retina from damage. They may help to prevent macular degeneration. The best way to protect your eyes is to take a supplement of mixed carotenoids.
- VITAMIN C: Vitamin C is an antioxidant that, when taken over a period of years, may help to prevent cataracts. Eat citrus, berries and leafy greens. Take up to 3,000 mg a day, less if diarrhea occurs.
- VITAMIN E: Another antioxidant, vitamin E, is found in wheat germ, vegetable oils, nuts and seeds, leafy greens and whole grains. In addition, supplements of 400-800 IUs a day give optimal benefits.
- B VITAMINS: The B vitamins support all the nerves, including the optic nerve. Eat whole grains and fresh vegetables and fruits, and take a vitamin B complex every day. Brewer's yeast is a good natural source of protein and B vitamins.
- SELENIUM: Among other antioxidant effects, this mineral may help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration. Get it from poultry, fish, oats and brown rice and from daily supplements of 400 mcg.
- ZINC: Zinc may inhibit retinal detachment and slow macular degeneration. It is found in cheese, poultry, eggs, wheat germ and legumes. You can take daily supplements of up to 50 mg.
For more information about supplements and helpful products, see below under Nutrients.
HERBS
Taking Eyebright in capsule or tea form can be helpful. Eyebright tea can also be used to rinse the eyes.
Goldenseal can be used as an alternative or in addition to eyebright. Caution: Do not take goldenseal internally on a daily basis for more than one week at a time, do not use it during pregnancy, and use it with caution if you are allergic to ragweed.
For sore tired eyes - soak and chill two Chamomile tea bags place on closed lids for 10 minutes to soothe.
HERBAL SUPPORT FOR VISION
Bilberry: Bilberry is a potent herb for eyesight. It helps the retina adapt to light and dark. During World War II, British pilots who had eaten bilberry jam experienced improved night vision. Bilberry may also prevent cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. By strengthening retinal capillaries, it may inhibit and help treat diabetes-linked retinal problems, too.
Ginkgo Biloba: Another helpful herb is ginkgo biloba, which ensures that nerve cells receive nourishment and improves circulation in the head; the eyes, packed with nerve cells, benefit greatly. As an antioxidant, ginkgo may also help treat macular degeneration and diabetes-linked disorders.

Herbal Remedies: Eye Problem Information
HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR EYES
Eye strain and minor eye injuries can sometimes be helped by using homeopathic remedies. Eye strain resulting from too many hours of looking at a computer screen, reading, or detailed work can produce tired eyes that ache and burn, water, have an increased sensitivity to light, or experience blurry vision. Minor eye irritations, from smoke, smog, or pollens, and slight injuries, such as a scratched cornea from a contact lens, dirt, or dust, may also be relieved by homeopathy. As always, if there is any doubt about the severity of a condition involving the eyes, it is best to check with your health care provider.
Aconite napellus - 6C: When there is irritation from foreign matter in the eye, Aconite napellus may bring relief from pain, watering, and heightened sensitivity to light. Aconite napellus 6C can be taken three to four times per day, and discontinued when the discomfort stops.
Ruta graveolens - 6C: Ruta graveolens is most likely to be helpful in cases of eye strain where the eyes burn and water after long periods of visual effort, such as reading, computer work, or embroidery. The eyelids may become somewhat swollen and itchy, and the eyes may be more sensitive to light than usual. Ruta graveolens 6C can be taken two to three times, a few hours apart, continuing only as long as symptoms persist.
Arnica - 6C: If the eyes feel sore and bruised, especially after time spent looking off into the distance, then both rest and Arnica may offer some relief. The muscles of the eyes may ache and feel tired. Arnica 6C can be taken two to three times, a few hours apart, discontinuing as symptoms improve.
Apis mellifica - 6C: This remedy may be helpful in cases of rapid onset of very watery, burning, and stinging eyes. Symptoms are puffy eyelids and sensitivity to light. Apis mellifica is useful for symptoms caused by bright light (for example, snow blindness). Apis mellifica 6c can be taken in the amount of one dose every hour, up to six doses, then three times daily; its use should be reduced when improvement is noted.
HOMEOPATHY DOSAGE INSTRUCTIONS
Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a health care provider, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.
Many homeopathic health care providers suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.
If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.
See Homeopathic Therapy for more information about homeopathy and Homeopathic Potencies about dosing information.
CONSIDERATIONS
If the problem is a recurrent one, allergies are a likely cause. See Allergies for more information.
If itching and aching are accompanied by a bright pink or red color and thick secretions, you may have conjunctivitis. See Conjunctivitis (Pinkeye) for more information.
If itching and tired eyes persist over a long period of time, there may be an underlying nutritional cause. Supplement your diet with the supplements described above under Nutrients.
Self-Assessment Guide for Computer Users
With this checklist, the more "YES" answers there are, the better. This is particularly important for intensive computer users (more than 5 hours per day at the computer) as well as moderate computer users (3-5 hours per day at the computer).YES NO Are the shoulders relaxed, elbows close to the sides (i.e. arms are not reaching), forearms roughly horizontal and wrists straight while using the keyboard? If no, adjust the chair height and/or keyboard height. Is there some space in front of the keyboard to allow the user to rest the wrists when not actively keyboarding? If no, try to provide about 2-3 inches of space for the wrists and palms to rest on when not actively keyboarding. Also, ensure that the wrists and palms are not resting on sharp edges or similar pressure points. Do the wrists remain "free" and not resting on the desk surface or wrist rest while actively keyboarding? If no, try to avoid "planting" the wrists and palms on surfaces such as the desk or a wrist rest since this tends to cause deviation of the wrists. Use those surfaces when not actively keyboarding. When seated, is the lower back well supported and remain in contact with the backrest of the chair while performing computer work?If no, consider the following:
- Adjust the backrest of the chair (i.e. adjust height, move backrest forward horizontally, adjust tilt).
- Try a pillow or strap-on back support to ensure that the back is in contact with the backrest.
- Try a footrest to assist with sitting posture.
While sitting, are the knees bent (about 90°) and the thighs roughly horizontal? If no, adjust height of chair accordingly. When seated, is there a space about the width of a clenched fist between the back of the knee and the front of the chair? If no, move the backrest forward horizontally or try adding a pillow or strap-on back support to help "shorten" the length of the seat pan. When seated, can the feet rest comfortably on the floor? If no, the keyboard height may need to be lowered or a footrest may be required. While seated at the workstation, are the ears, shoulders and hips lined up vertically? If no, make necessary adjustments to the chair height, the angle of the backrest, keyboard height, viewing distance and/or the height of the computer monitor. Is the mouse or other pointing device located close to, and at about the same height as, the keyboard? If no, bring the mouse device closer to the keyboard, at about the same height. The upper arm should be close to the body and the elbow should be bent (about 90°) and close to the sides. The wrist should be relatively straight, not deviated to the left or right or up or down. Is a document holder available for frequently used documents or reference materials? If no, use a document holder that is positioned to either side of the monitor or, if the workstation permits it, prop the documents "in-line", between the monitor and keyboard. Are frequently used items such as files, telephone, etc. placed within easy reach?Avoid frequent above shoulder reaches or frequent twists or turns of the spine. Does the user take frequent vision breaks for refreshing the eyes?If no, and the user often experiences dry, itchy, irritated, tired eyes and/or headaches and eyestrain, remember that for every 30 minutes of intensive computer users, rest the eyes by glancing away from the monitor and focusing on a distant object for about 15 seconds before resuming work on the computer. Does the user take physical breaks and move about frequently during the day (such as stretching exercises performed at the desk, moving or walking about to perform different tasks, changing sitting postures, etc.)?If no, remember that for every hour of intensive computer use, try to take about 5 minutes away from the computer to stretch, perform a different task, etc. Humans cannot remain in one position for hours on end without feeling aches and pains. Is the top of the computer screen at about eye level or slightly lower? If no, and neck/shoulder discomfort is a problem, adjust the height of the monitor accordingly (ensure that the monitor is on a stable surface). Are the characters on the monitor easy to read?If no, and eyestrain/headaches are a problem, consider the following:
- Adjust the contrast/brightness levels on the monitor.
- Check distance from the monitor (should be about arm's length).
- Check for sources of direct or reflected glare.
- Check the level of overall illumination in the area.
- Adjust font size, screen colors.
