EYE SHINGLES DESCRIPTION
Herpes zoster is the medical name for shingles. Shingles is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, a member of the herpes family and the same virus that causes chicken pox. The characteristic symptom is a rash of painful blisters. After someone has chickenpox, the virus can lie dormant in the body's nervous system for years before reactivating as shingles. Shingles can appear anywhere on the body. About 25-percent of shingles outbreaks occur in or around the eye, a condition called herpes zoster ophthalmicus. Knowing early signs and symptoms of eye shingles is important because treatment during the first stages can lessen pain and prevent vision loss.
EYE SHINGLES FREQUENT SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
THE EYES & THE HERPES ZOSTER VIRUS
The eyes are sometimes affected by herpes zoster. This is due to the fact that the eyes are connected to nerves that may be infected with the herpes zoster virus. In many cases, eye shingles start by causing flulike symptoms, including fever, body aches, chills, headaches and fatigue. Often these symptoms are followed by pain on 1 side of the head or in 1 eye before any sign of a rash appears. The pain is often described as a burning or tingling sensation at first, followed by mild to severe pain. Pain follows a branch of the trigeminal nerve, which runs from the lower jaw to the forehead.
Before a shingles outbreak involves the eye, a red skin rash may form on 1 side of the head, eyelids or scalp. The rash looks like a cluster of blisters, which ooze clear fluid before eventually crusting over. A shingles rash may alternate between feeling itchy and painful. You can have shingles in they eye without developing a skin rash, but having the rash allows health care providers to diagnose the problem without further testing.
If the infection occurs on the forehead near the eyes or on the tip of the nose, the eyes are likely to become involved. The usual shingles rash can spread from an involved area of the forehead or cheek to the upper or lower eyelids. Shingles may cause redness of the conjunctiva (the mucous membrane covering the white of the eye). It can also cause small scratches or scarring of the cornea. The scratches on the cornea may increase the risk of bacterial infection in the eye and damage to the cornea can occur. Shingles may also cause inflammation inside the eye, known as iritis or uveitis. It can also affect the optic nerve or the retina.
Shingles of the eye can cause different symptoms that vary in severity. Symptoms are in 1 eye only and can include pain, blurry vision, redness or uveitis, which is an inflammation of the drainage structures of the eye. Inflammation can also develop in the interior surface of the eye, the retina. Both of these conditions can result in vision loss.
Herpes zoster infections of the eye can lead to redness, swelling, pain, sensitivity to light, and blurred vision. Severe or repeated episodes of herpes zoster infection are associated with other eye conditions, including glaucoma, scarring inside the eye, and cataract formation.
Transmission of the virus from people with herpes zoster to produce chicken pox has occurred, but occurs less frequently than transmission of virus from people with chicken pox. Localized herpes zoster requires secretion precautions to guard against spreading of infection by direct contact with secretions from vesicles and from secretion-contaminated articles. Proper hand washing techniques are the best safeguard to prevent infection transmission.
MoonDragon's Healthcare Information: Hand Washing Procedure
Shingles is not contagious in most cases, but the virus can be passed from someone with shingles to those, especially children, who have never had chicken pox.
EYE SHINGLES CAUSES
SHINGLES & CHICKENPOX VIRAL CONNECTION
Shingles is caused by reactivation in the adult years of the chicken pox virus that occurred during childhood. The virus can be reactivated when the body's immunity to the virus breaks down. This may happen due to normal aging, or the body's immune system may become weakened due to stress from illness, physical or emotional stress, fatigue, poor nutrition, certain medications, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or other factors.
Once reactivated, the virus travels along nerve fibers, usually settling in fairly isolated areas of the skin on one side of the body, but it can appear anywhere on the body. The infected area of the body usually has severe pain, itching, redness, numbness, and the development of a rash. The rash on the skin develops into small, fluid-filled blisters called vesicles. Within a few days of their appearance on the skin, the vesicles break open and form scabs. In severe cases, the rash can leave permanent scars, long standing pain, numbness, and skin discoloration.
EYE SHINGLES CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL TREATMENT
Singles is an infection of the nerve endings in the skin, the painful condition known as shingles is caused by the herpes zoster virus. This is the same virus responsible for chicken pox. After a child recovers from chicken pox, the virus stays in the body, lying dormant in the spinal cord. It is activated, usually many years later, when the immune system is weakened by stress, lack of sleep, poor diet, infections, AIDS or such cancers as leukemia. The first sign that the reactivated virus has spread to nerve endings is a burning or tingling pain, most often in the trunk area around the ribs and waist. Itchy blisters form and crust over, eventually falling off. Blisters can be so painful that anything coming into contact with the skin, even clothing, feels intolerable. Headaches, fever and fatigue also beset shingles sufferers; pain may linger after blisters are gone. Shingles is typically treated with antiviral drugs, but anti-inflammatory and antiviral herbs, vitamins and natural immune boosters can also aid healing and reduce pain.
It is important to see your health care provider if you have symptoms of eye shingles. Oral and topical medicines can treat the symptoms. Therapy works best if started within 48 to 72 hours of developing a shingles skin rash. Without treatment, people with eye shingles can develop scarring in the eye that may result in vision loss.
Treatment of the symptoms of shingles through compresses and pain relievers is usually recommended by health care providers. Lubricating eyedrops or antibiotic eye drops may also be prescribed.
What you can do as soon as you feel any tingling pain that might herald shingles, or as soon as blisters appear, see your health care provider, as antiviral drugs must be taken early on. Keep the blistered areas clean, use herbal compresses for both relief and cleansing, and gently pat dry. Try, as hard as it may be, to refrain from scratching the blisters. Wear light, well-ventilated cotton clothing with as little underneath as possible. Make sure your diet is healthy. Avoid sugar and refined flours. Herbal salves and teas can ease pain and hasten healing. Herbal amino acid and vitamin supplements (especially vitamin E) also support immunity and help to prevent lingering pain.
The use of antiviral medications may be recommended by your health care provider if your condition is diagnosed with 72 hours after its appearance. The medication most commonly prescribed is acyclovir. Famcyclovir and Valacyclovir may also be prescribed. Occasionally, corticosteroids (Prednisone) may be prescribed to reduce inflammation. Pain relievers are sometimes also used to reduce pain.
The skin rash and blisters should be cleaned gently once or twice per day with cool water. Antibiotic ointment may be advised to use on open areas. Because the pain that accompanies shingles can be intense, your physician probably will prescribe a pain medication. For post-herpetic neuralgia, the pain that lingers well after the rash has resolved, different medications are often prescribed. These drugs decrease the action of pain fibers and alter the way pain signals are perceived by our central nervous system. Amitriptyline, doxepin and gabapentin are three examples. When shingles affects the eyes, an eye specialist (ophthalmologist) should be consulted immediately.
By its very nature, herpes zoster infections are prone to return from time to time, especially when the immune system is weakened. Early diagnosis and treatment is important to minimize the symptoms and reduce the risk of complications that may compromise vision.
Fruit Enzymes, such as Papain, an enzyme present in Papaya, and the enzyme Bromelain is found in Pineapple may be helpful in treating shingles. Both enzymes are natural anti-inflammatories that may help to reduce the swelling of the skin around shingles blisters. Both are available in pill form at health food stores and online. Take 2 bromelain pills 3 times daily. For papain, follow dosage directions on the label. You can also, of course eat fresh pineapple and papaya for the same benefits.

Many homeopathic health care providers suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.
If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

DIET, NUTRITION, & LIFESTYLE RECOMMENDATIONS
The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention estimates that roughly 1 million Americans are affected by shingles each year. Anyone who has had chickenpox can develop shingles. It occurs when the virus that causes chickenpox reactivates, often after lying dormant for many years. Also known as herpes zoster, shingles usually starts as a painful burning or tingling sensation and typically progresses into a blister-filled rash. Although shingles is best prevented through vaccination (according to conventional medicine - vaccinations are still considered contraversial about their effectiveness and safety), certain foods may boost your body's ability to suppress the virus.
Eating a diet centered on nutrient-dense foods may decrease your risk of developing shingles, according to a case-controlled study published in the "International Journal of Epidemiology" in 2006. The study found that people who ate more fruits and vegetables and consumed plenty of micronutrients, particularly Vitamin A, Vitamin B-6, Vitamin C and Vitamin E, Folate, Iron and Zinc, were less likely to develop shingles than those whose diets supplied fewer vitamins and minerals. Specifically, people who rarely ate fruit were more than three times as likely to come down with shingles than those who ate more than three servings of fruit per day. Eating a nutrient-dense diet appears to be especially beneficial for high-risk individuals, or those past the age of 60.
Making anti-inflammatory foods a regular part of your diet may also help protect against shingles. Although inflammation is a normal part of your body's response to illness and injury, chronic inflammation (the low-grade kind brought on by stress, lack of exercise and eating too many processed foods) can undermine your body’s ability to fight infection. A diet that’s low in sugar and rich in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, fish, nuts and seeds is generally considered anti-inflammatory. Certain foods, including Salmon and other fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, are strongly anti-inflammatory. Ginger, Garlic, Turmeric, Basil and a few other herbs and spices have anti-inflammatory effects, too, as does Dark Chocolate.
Choosing foods that are rich in Lysine, while generally avoiding those that are high in Arginine, may also boost your body's ability to prevent a shingles infection. While both of these amino acids are important to your overall health, arginine helps fuel the replication of herpes zoster and other viruses in the herpes family. Lysine helps suppress the growth of these viruses by counteracting or blocking the effects of arginine. A diet that avoids arginine-rich foods while promoting lysine-rich foods can be quite effective. Lysine, an essential amino acid, is especially useful in combating herpes viruses, including herpes zoster. It helps to deter viruses from reproducing, and it is essential for tissue repair. Thus, it speeds healing and helps to prevent the infection from spreading. Although lysine and arginine often occur together in foods, fish (including salmon, tuna, mackerel and trout) is significantly higher in lysine than arginine. Low-fat dairy cheese, yogurt and milk is also high in lysine, as is most poultry. Take a total of 4,000 mg Lysine daily (with 500 mg capsules, take 2 or 3 at a time) for 3 to 4 days. Then cut back the dose by 500 to 1,000 mg every 2 or 3 days.
Apply Vitamin E and Vitamin A, alternately, directly on the sores. Or try using L-Lysine Cream from a health food store.
Consume adequate amounts of filtered Spring Water by sipping 1 mouthful every 30 minutes while awake.
Increase raw food and quality Protein.
Eliminate all refined carbohydrates, alcohol, processed foods, dairy products, gluten containing grains and caffeine containing foods such as coffee, tea, cola and chocolate. If overweight, limit total carbohydrate intake to not more than 60 grams per day.
Eliminate all hydrogenated fats and oils. Use only Extra Virgin Olive Oil and especially Coconut Oil. Coconut oil has anti-viral properties.
Taking the proper supplements when blisters first appear can make the blisters dry up quickly, and the discomfort may be alleviated.
Use Bee Pollen or Bee Propolis, Chlorophyll, and/or Kelp to fight the virus and promote healing. Caution: Bee pollen may cause allergic reactions in some individuals. Start with a small amount, and discontinue use if a rash, wheezing, discomfort, or other symptoms occur.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) makes up 95-oercebt of the fluid inside the eye. Acts as a shock absorber for the eye and also serves to transport nutrients into the eye. Hyaluronic Acid has been proven by numerous medical studies to alleviate pain and suffering from arthritis of the knee and other joints.
Selenium is an essential component of Glutathione, the body's most potent natural antioxidant system. It is a popular choice in many antioxidant regimens.
Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid which is not utilized in protein synthesis, but is mainly found free in most tissues, especially throughout the nervous system.
A complete Vitamin B-Complex of 8 essential vitamins. B Vitamins are precursors of coenzymes involved in the conversion of cellular energy, manufacture of hormones and proteins, and repair and maintenance of nerve structures.
Eat plenty of foods that contain Vitamin B-6, including bananas, potatoes, and sweet potatoes.
Zinc is an antiviral and essential to the body's resistance. Oral supplementation with zinc (30 to 100 mg daily) has been shown to be effective in reducing the frequency, duration, and severity of herpes in clinical studies. Zinc lozenge boosts cold season defense with zinc, widely recognized as an important nutritional support for viral defense, and Echinacea Pupurea, clinically shown to support the immune system, and Vitamin C, a vitally important vitamin for general health maintenance.
Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids provides antioxidant protection for many of the body's important enzyme systems. Both oral consumption and topical application of Vitamin C increase the rate of healing of herpes ulcers. Vitamin C not only battles the shingles virus but builds resistance back up and assists the skin in healing. Take 3,000 to 4,000 mg a day.
Vitamin A is an immune booster and a support for new cell growth. Take 50,000 IU daily for 10 days only.
Besides using Vitamin E topically, you can take 400 mg a day to assuage pain during acute phases and reduce the risk of the pain continuing.
If shingles appear on the forehead, near the eyes or on the tip of the nose, seek treatment from an ophthamologist.
Enhancement of the immune status is key to the prevention and control of herpes infections. Postherpetic neuralgia, as this constant pain is called, often occurs in older patients. Shingles is most common in the elderly, as well.
A topical preparation used in the treatment of shingles is DMSO. It comes as a liquid and is applied with cotton balls or it also comes in a convenient roll-on applicator.
Apply Zinc Oxide cream to the blisters and the affected area. After the blisters have healed over, apply Aloe Vera gel and Vitamin E to the area. If zinc oxide, aloe gel, and/or vitamin E do not work to heal the blisters within 3 days, intravenous injections of large doses of Vitamin C should provide relief almost immediately. Large intravenous doses of vitamin C can cause diarrhea. Let your health care provider decide how much to give. The normal dose given is between 10 and 50 centigrams (a centigram is 1/100 of a gram).
SPECIFIC NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SHINGLES
PRIMARY NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
Bio-Immunozyme Forte: Bio-Immunozyme Forte is a broad-spectrum product containing vitamins, minerals, enzymes, as well as neonatal bovine gland and organ components known to support immune function. It's in a base of superoxide dismutase, catalase, Echinacea, methyl-donors, Organik15 and chlorophyll. It's probably one of the top four sellers that Biotics Research produces and it works wonderfully. One of the reasons that many health care providers buy it is that it works so well in low doses for the chronically ill patient. With many immune products that are available in the marketplace, you have to give patients 10, 15, 20 capsules a day to get any results. In the chronic phase with Bio-Immunozyme Forte, one tablet, three times a day is generally sufficient. Dose: Take 2 tablets, 3 times daily after meals for Immune System Activation.

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane): MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a non-toxic physiologically active source of the essential mineral Sulfur, and as such, is a natural compound found in plants and animals. MSM is a normal oxidation product of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and may be part of the natural global sulfur cycle. MSM is, therefore, the key member of the sulfur family. Sulfur is a very important element in human metabolism. Sulfur is necessary for the production of collagen, the primary constituent of cartilage and connective tissue and muscle fibers. Additionally, intracellular sulfhydryl groups are necessary for the catalytic function of numerous enzymes and to keep the muscle fibers from sticking or clumping together. Sulfur is necessary for the maintenance of healthy hair, skin and nails, and sulfur plays an important role in carbohydrate metabolism. All of us consume inadequate amounts of sulfur-containing compounds, such as methionine and cysteine. MSM can, therefore, serve as the excellent supplement source of sulfur. MSM has been extensively researched, is highly soluble, and has been found to be a safe and effective source of supplemental sulfur. MSM is used for muscular aches and pains, fibromyalgia, swelling & inflammation, allergies & asthma, emphysema and other lung problems, skin damages and repair, and intestinal problems like leaky gut syndrome & colitis. MSM plays a beneficial role in allergies, immune health, arthritis, osteoporosis, nails, fibromyalgia, muscle soreness, athletic injuries. connective tissue and joint flexibility, helping to rejuvenate joints and all body cells, lessens the pain and stiffness of arthritis, boosts energy levels. MSM combined with Vitamin C offers support for allergies, connective tissue, joint flexibility, immune function, arthritis, osteoporosis, digestive disorders, circulation, bruising, carpal tunnel syndrome, and antioxidant protection. MSM Dosage Recommendations: Take 1/2 teaspoonful of MSM Powder 4 times daily with the mineral molybdenum (Mo-Zyme Forte) 2 tablets, 3 times daily and get great results with allergies and asthma. For shingles, take 1/2 teaspoon powder, 2 to 4 times daily (depending on severity of symptoms) after meals. It is important to take with 1 Bio-C Plus 1000 Tablet (Or other Vitamin C supplement). Each rounded teaspoonful of MSM crystals supplies: MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) 5000 mg.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids, EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) / DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid): Fish Oil is a source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, namely EPA and DHA. This is one faction of the Essential Fatty Acid complex. This omega-3 oil is derived from deep cold-water fishes. After the oil is extracted it is concentrated to provide more EPA and DHA per ounce of oil. It is used as a preventative with Cardiovascular Disease. Studies have shown that EPA and DHA can prevent atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. EPA has a positive effect on the immune system and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by blocking the bad prostaglandins and promoting the formation of the good prostaglandins. EPA has been shown to improve asthma, dermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, psoriasis and gout. EPA and DHA have been shown to prevent and treat endometriosis, menstrual abnormalities and PMS symptoms including depression and irritability. Dosage Recommendations: Take 3 capsules once daily after a meal for Omega-3 fatty acids.
