DESCRIPTION
Herpes zoster is the medical name for shingles. Shingles is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, a member of the herpes family and the same virus that causes chicken pox. The characteristic symptom is a rash of painful blisters. Shingles can appear anywhere on the body.
SHINGLES & CHICKENPOX
Shingles is caused by reactivation in the adult years of the chicken pox virus that occurred during childhood. The virus can be reactivated when the body's immunity to the virus breaks down. This may happen due to normal aging, or the body's immune system may become weakened due to stress from illness, physical or emotional stress, fatigue, poor nutrition, certain medications, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or other factors.
Once reactivated, the virus travels along nerve fibers, usually settling in fairly isolated areas of the skin on one side of the body, but it can appear anywhere on the body. The infected area of the body usually has severe pain, itching, redness, numbness, and the development of a rash. The rash on the skin develops into small, fluid-filled blisters called vesicles. Within a few days of their appearance on the skin, the vesicles break open and form scabs. In severe cases, the rash can leave permanent scars, long standing pain, numbness, and skin discoloration.
THE EYES AND THE HERPES ZOSTER VIRUS
The eyes are sometimes affected by herpes zoster. This is due to the fact that the eyes are connected to nerves that may be infected with the herpes zoster virus.
If the infection occurs on the forehead near the eyes or on the tip of the nose, the eyes are likely to become involved. The usual shingles rash can spread from an involved area of the forehead or cheek to the upper or lower eyelids. Shingles may cause redness of the conjunctiva (the mucous membrane covering the white of the eye). It can also cause small scratches or scarring of the cornea. The scratches on the cornea may increase the risk of bacterial infection in the eye and damage to the cornea can occur. Shingles may also cause inflammation inside the eye, known as iritis or uveitis. It can also affect the optic nerve or the retina.
Herpes zoster infections of the eye can lead to redness, swelling, pain, sensitivity to light, and blurred vision. Severe or repeated episodes of herpes zoster infection are associated with other eye conditions, including glaucoma, scarring inside the eye, and cataract formation.
CONTAGIOUSNESS
Transmission of the virus from people with herpes zoster to produce chicken pox has occurred, but occurs less frequently than transmission of virus from people with chicken pox. Localized herpes zoster requires secretion precautions to guard against spreading of infection by direct contact with secretions from vesicles and from secretion-contaminated articles. Proper hand washing techniques are the best safeguard to prevent infection transmission.

Shingles is not contagious in most cases, but the virus can be passed from someone with shingles to those, especially children, who have never had chicken pox.
TREATMENT
shingles is an infection of the nerve endings in the skin, the painful condition known as shingles is caused by the herpes zoster virus. This is the same virus responsible for chicken pox. After a child recovers from chicken pox, the virus stays in the body, lying dormant in the spinal cord. It is activated, usually many years later, when the immune system is weakened by stress, lack of sleep, poor diet, infections, AIDS or such cancers as leukemia. The first sign that the reactivated virus has spread to nerve endings is a burning or tingling pain, most often in the trunk area around the ribs and waist. Itchy blisters form and crust over, eventually falling off. Blisters can be so painful that anything coming into contact with the skin, even clothing, feels intolerable. Headaches, fever and fatigue also beset shingles sufferers; pain may linger after blisters are gone. Shingles is typically treated with antiviral drugs, but anti-inflammatory and antiviral herbs, vitamins and natural immune boosters can also aid healing and reduce pain.
Treatment of the symptoms of shingles through compresses and pain relievers is usually recommended by health care providers. Lubricating eyedrops or antibiotic eye drops may also be prescribed.
What you can do as soon as you feel any tingling pain that might herald shingles, or as soon as blisters appear, see your health care provider, as antiviral drugs must be taken early on. Keep the blistered areas clean, use herbal compresses for both relief and cleansing, and gently pat dry. Try, as hard as it may be, to refrain from scratching the blisters. Wear light, well-ventilated cotton clothing with as little underneath as possible. Make sure your diet is healthy. Avoid sugar and refined flours. Herbal salves and teas can ease pain and hasten healing. Herbal amino acid and vitamin supplements (especially vitamin E) also support immunity and help to prevent lingering pain.
MEDICAL TREATMENT
The use of antiviral medications may be recommended by your health care provider if your condition is diagnosed with 72 hours after its appearance. The medication most commonly prescribed is acyclovir. Famcyclovir and Valacyclovir may also be prescribed. Occasionally, corticosteroids (Prednisone) may be prescribed to reduce inflammation. Pain relievers are sometimes also used to reduce pain.
The skin rash and blisters should be cleaned gently once or twice per day with cool water. Antibiotic ointment may be advised to use on open areas. Because the pain that accompanies shingles can be intense, your physician probably will prescribe a pain medication. For post-herpetic neuralgia, the pain that lingers well after the rash has resolved, different medications are often prescribed. These drugs decrease the action of pain fibers and alter the way pain signals are perceived by our central nervous system. Amitriptyline, doxepin and gabapentin are three examples. When shingles affects the eyes, an eye specialist (ophthalmologist) should be consulted immediately.
By its very nature, herpes zoster infections are prone to return from time to time, especially when the immune system is weakened. Early diagnosis and treatment is important to minimize the symptoms and reduce the risk of complications that may compromise vision.
HOLISTIC RECOMMENDATIONS & NUTRITION
Taking the proper supplements when blisters first appear can make the blisters dry up quickly, and the discomfort may be alleviated.

If shingles appear on the forehead, near the eyes or on the tip of the nose, seek treatment from an ophthamologist.
Enhancement of the immune status is key to the prevention and control of herpes infections. Postherpetic neuralgia, as this constant pain is called, often occurs in older patients. Shingles is most common in the elderly, as well.
A diet that avoids arginine-rich foods while promoting lysine-rich foods can be quite effective. Lysine, an essential amino acid, is especially useful in combating herpes viruses, including herpes zoster. It helps to deter viruses from reproducing, and it is essential for tissue repair. Thus, it speeds healing and helps to prevent the infection from spreading. Take a total of 4,000 mg daily (with 500 mg capsules, take 2 or 3 at a time) for 3 to 4 days. Then cut back the dose by 500 to 1,000 mg every 2 or 3 days.
Zinc is an antiviral and essential to the body's resistance. Oral supplementation with zinc (30 - 100 mg daily) has been shown to be effective in reducing the frequency, duration, and severity of herpes in clinical studies.
Both oral consumption and topical application of vitamin C increase the rate of healing of herpes ulcers. Vitamin C not only battles the shingles virus but builds resistance back up and assists the skin in healing. Take 3,000 to 4,000 mg a day.
Vitamin A is an immune booster and a support for new cell growth. Take 50,000 IU daily for 10 days only.
Besides using Vitamin E topically, you can take 400 mg a day to assuage pain during acute phases and reduce the risk of the pain continuing.
A topical preparation used in the treatment of shingles is DMSO. It comes as a liquid and is applied with cotton balls or it also comes in a convenient roll-on applicator. (See products recommendations below.)
Apply zinc oxide cream to the blisters and the affected area. After the blisters have healed over, apply aloe vera gel and vitamin E to the area.
Fruit enzymes, such as papain, an enzyme present in papaya, and the enzyme bromelain is found in pineapple may be helpful in treating shingles. Both enzymes are natural anti-inflammatories that may help to reduce the swelling of the skin around shingles blisters. Both are available in pill form at health food stores and online. Take 2 bromelain pills 3 times daily. For papain, follow dosage directions on the label. You can also, of course eat fresh pineapple and papaya for the same benefits.

HERBAL COMPRESSES

Eliminate all hydrogenated fats and oils. Use only extra virgin olive oil and especially coconut oil. Coconut oil has anti-viral properties.
Increase raw food and quality protein.
If overweight, limit total carbohydrate intake to not more than 60 grams per day.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS RECOMMENDATIONS (SHINGLES & HEALTHY EYES)
The following nutrients are important for healing once appropriate local treatment has been administered. Unless otherwise specified, the following recommended doses are for those over the age of 18. HOMEOPATHY DOSAGE INSTRUCTIONS
Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a health care provider, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.
Many homeopathic health care providers suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.
If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

CONSIDERATIONS
If zinc oxide, aloe gel, and/or vitamin E do not work to heal the blisters within 3 days, intravenous injections of large doses of vitamin C should provide relief almost immediately. Large intravenous doses of vitamin C can cause diarrhea. Let your health care provider decide how much to give. The normal dose given is between 10 and 50 centigrams (a centigram is 1/100 of a gram).

You have any increase of symptoms. You may need frequent changes in your eyeglass prescription. If you have blurred or double vision that develops slowly; are having a problem seeing because of daytime glare or have difficulty driving at night because of glare from headlights, you need to see your health care provider.
You have any unexpected or unusual symptoms. There may be underlying health issues that need to be addressed.
Are having vision problems that are affecting your ability to perform daily activities.
Call your child's health care provider if your baby does not look directly at or respond readily to faces or large, colorful objects by age 2 to 3 months or if your child scowls, squints, or shields his or her eyes more than expected when in sunlight, or light seems to hurt your child's eyes.
You and your family members should have your eyesight checked regularly by your health care provider to rule out any problems and to receive a prescription for contacts or eyeglasses, if they are needed. Preserve you vision... it is very important.
