DESCRIPTION
Bloodshot eyes appear red and occurs when the small blood vessels on the surface of the eye (sclera) dilate excessively and become inflamed, enlarged, and congested with blood, usually in response to an insufficient supply of oxygen in the cornea or tissues covering the eyes. They are also called scleral injection, conjunctival injection, and red eye(s).
The condition is not, on its own, a problem, but is rather an indication of a greater disorder or the result of some minor irritant. At worst, they may on their own cause some minor cosmetic concerns. They are a common consequence of eyestrain, fatigue, mechanical irritation, environmental factors such as extremely dry air, sunburned sclera, allergic reactions, infection and other medical conditions and improper diet, especially the consumption of alcohol.
A bloodshot appearance can also result from deficiencies in vitamins B-2 (riboflavin) and B-6 (pyridoxine), and the amino acids histidine, lysine, or phenylalanine. Once the body receives the nutrients it needs, the congestion in the blood vessels should disappear.
A bright red, uniformly dense bloody area on the sclera results from a small amount of bleeding into the sclera. It is often first noted in the morning on arising. This is a fairly common occurrence and of little significance. If upon awakening in the morning, you notice a bloody blotch in one eye that doesn't hurt but just looks bad, don't worry. It is usually due to eyestrain or fatigue, and it generally clears up on its own after a few days.
COMMON CAUSES
Eyestrain. Fatigue. Blepharitis. Foreign bodies in the cornea and conjunctiva resulting in irritation. Conjunctivitis or inflammation of the conjunctiva. Corneal abrasion. Corneal ulcers and infections. Iritis. Ocular lacerations and intraocular foreign bodies. Uveitis.
Most commonly, bloodshot eyes are the result of fatigue and eyestrain, which require no real treatment and indicate no great disorder. Rest is always a plus. Topical antihistamines like Visine are good for treating bloodshot eyes, as they can reduce inflammation caused by whatever condition is present. Avoid at all costs unnecessary rubbing or scratching at the surface of the eye, as additional irritation will only worsen the condition and present the possibility for infection. Use eyedrops or a mild saline solution to soothe the eyes, if necessary, and do not allow contact with skin or hands, regardless of any itch.
Sclera irritation appears red when the vessels on the surface become enlarged. This may be a result from mechanical irritation, environmental irritants, such as extremely dry air, excess sun exposure, allergic reactions, infection, and Other medical conditions.
A bright red, uniformly dense bloody area on the sclera results from a small amount of bleeding (hemorrhage) into the conjunctiva. It is fairly common occurrence and is usually caused by straining or coughing. It generally clears up on its own after a few days.
EYE INFECTION
Infection of the eye can be potentially very serious, but is usually the result of conjunctivitis, often called "pink eye". Conjunctivitis is a highly contagious and rather uncomfortable illness but is quite common and not terribly serious. Unless symptoms are exceedingly severe, conjunctivitis does not usually warrant a trip to the doctor or pediatrician, and can be controlled by preventing its spread. Do not rub one eye and then touch the other and avoid contact with others when infected. Wash your hands regularly during the period of infection to prevent transmission. If conjunctivitis lasts more than a few days, or if the itching seems more serious than commonly associated with the disease, a doctor's help may be necessary, and they may prescribe an antibiotic eyedrop or other antibiotic medication. Viral conjunctivitis, however, which is quite common as well, will not be sated with drugs, and must be allowed to run its course. A warm compress can be a welcome relief to the infected eye.
EYE INJURY
Be sure, when considering the possible cause of redness, that the eye is clear of foreign objects and damage. Small spots of blood without apparent pain or laceration are usually normal, the result of fatigue or strain, and will fade within a day, disappearing within several. If you believe your eye may be seriously injured, consult a health care provider immediately. Laceration to the white of the eye can occur without great ordeal, but damage to any of its sight organs can cause permanent damage. If obstacles are found, flush the eye with water or a saline solution appropriate to the eye's salinity (eyedrops will work). If removal is unsuccessful, consult a health care provider immediately.
Note: There may be other causes of bloodshot eyes. This list is not all inclusive, and the causes are not presented in order of likelihood. The causes of this symptom can include unlikely diseases and medications. Furthermore, the causes may vary based on age and gender of the affected person, as well as on the specific characteristics of the symptom such as exact location, quality, time course, aggravating factors, relieving factors, and associated complaints. Visit with your health care provider to explore the possible explanations for bloodshot eyes, occurring alone or in combination with other problems.
TREATMENT
Treatments depend upon the cause of the condition, but may generally be performed without the aid of a medical care provider.
HOME CARE TREATMENT
For fatigue or eyestrain, try to rest; no treatment is necessary. Otherwise, see your primary health care provider or an ophthalmologist for medical treatment.
If conjunctivitis is suspected or confirmed, avoid touching the infected eye and then rubbing the other eye. This condition is very contagious.
CALL YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER OR EYE SPECIALIST IF:
Bloodshot eyes persists for longer than one or two days.
There is unexplained eye pain and vision problems.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER'S OFFICE:
The medical history will be obtained and a physical examination performed.
Medical history questions documenting eye redness in detail may include:
- Location of eye redness.
- Are both eyes affected?
- If only one eye, which one?
- What part of the eye is affected - all of the white part, or just a small location?
- Time pattern... Did it begin suddenly? Has it ever happened before? Does it persist?
- Does it get worse after movement of the eyes?
- What other symptoms are also present?
The physical examination may include a detailed eye examination.
INTERVENTION
The eyes may need irrigation with normal saline solution, and any foreign bodies will need to be removed. Eye drops may be prescribed.
AFTER SEEING YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER:
You may want to add a diagnosis related to bloodshot eyes to your personal medical record.
