DESCRIPTION

Skin loses some of its elasticity with age, and muscles within the eyelids lose tone, and the cheeks lose collagen, a protein that makes skin firm, causing what is known as bags under the eyes. In addition, fat can gather in the eyelid, and fluids can accumulate and cause swelling. Sun damage can make the problem worse. Puffiness around the eyes can also be caused by allergies or excessive consumption of salt. Smoking can aggravate the problem. Genetics may play a factor in bag formation and dark circles.

The most common reason is your fluid intake. Morning puffiness comes from water retention. Fluid collects under the eyes, especially when a person is horizontal. If you drink excessive amounts of alcohol, this is a natural reaction to it from your body. Alcohol caused dehydration worsens the effect by making the eye-bag skin look like crepe paper. You may not get enough sleep which also can cause that tired looking, baggy eye. Crying is also a cause of them. In this case, the excessive salt from tears causes the skin around the eye to actually retain more water causing that puffy look.

DARK CIRCLES: Aggravated by anemia, ill health, lack of sleep, hormonal imbalance, poor blood circulation, and a poor diet consisting of too much fried, frozen and canned foods.

PUFFY EYES: Aggravated by hypertension, poor elimination, poor digestion, lack of sleep, too much sodium in the diet, too much late night drinking of any fluid.

TIRED IRRITATED EYES: Eye strain, lack of sleep, infection, allergies, overwork, stress.





RECOMMENDATIONS

BAGS UNDER THE EYES

  • Avoid drinking fluids before bed.


  • Limit your salt intake and avoid monosodium glutamate (MSG). Reducing the amount of sodium will naturally pull the water out of the eye area.


  • Do not smoke, and avoid second hand smoke.


  • Get plenty of sleep.


  • Place a washcloth dipped in ice water or a gel-filled compress over your eyes for 15 minutes once or twice daily.


  • See Allergies and take the self-test to determine allergens that may be causing the problem.


  • The best overall eye tonic is Eyebright (an herb). Make a tea of it and either use the tea bags or soak cotton balls or soft gauze in the tea and apply to eyes as a compress while lying down.


  • Witch Hazel is a natural remedy. Dampen a washcloth with witch hazel and place it over your eyes while lying down. Rest for at least 15 minutes.


  • Raw potato slices will help tighten baggy, puffy eyes. All you need is a potato and a knife or slicer! Slice 1/4 potato to fit over your eyes. Cut 2 slices or, if you prefer, 5 to 10 very thin slices, several for each eye. Either method works. Spritz eye area with water. Lying down, place the potato slices on your eyelids and leave in place for at least 10 minutes for best results. If you have sensitive skin, the potato juice may be irritating for some people.


  • A tea bag is also a puffy eye or eye bag remedy. Apply a tea bag that has been used over the eye while resting. It contains a natural element called tannin. Tannin will work to relieve the swelling quickly. Relax for at least 5 minutes.


  • Also, you can take knox gelatin, mix with small amount of boiling water, wait til it cools and apply with cotton balls under the eyes, relax at least 10 mins and rinse. Do every day. The geletin has vitamin K and will help reduce dark circles.


  • Hyaluronic Acid helps with bags, applied at night and first thing in the morning after you splash cold water on your face.


  • Herbal Remedies: Synthovial Seven, Pure Hyaluronic Acid, Hyalogic, 1 oz.

  • I have heard that applying Preparation H Ointment (for hemorrhoids) on your eye bags will help them to shrink down. I assume it's because of the astringent activity of the ointment.


  • Use potato juice and soak it in a Chamomile tea bag then put tea bags on eyes you get double the benefits. You should also make sure you are getting enough Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Iron.


  • Cut four to six slices of fresh cucumber and dice; place in small bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of ground coffee and one teabag full (approx 1-2 tablespoons) of Chamomile tea (cut the bag open and dump contents into bowl, or use loose tea leaves). Mix all ingredients. Take either 2 small squares of cheese cloth, or take a clean knee high nylon, cut 2 two inch long pieces, and tie one end of each. Spoon half the ingredients of the mixture above into each square or nylon pouch, and tie closed. Pat into a small, round, flat shape. Place in freezer until semi frozen (or rigid). Remove from freezer and place on eyelids for 20 minutes (or more, it actually feels really good). No more bags or dark circles. You can make these ahead and store them in a ziplock bag in the freezer to use whenever needed.

    PUFFY, SWOLLEN EYES

  • Puffiness is extra fluid under the eyes. Drink lots of water to flush toxins. Sleep on your back. Clients with the puffiest eyes often sleep on their stomachs. Ask your health care provider about antihistamines. Sinuses and allergies can cause puffiness under the eyes. Then of course there are all the tea, cucumber, potato compresses you can utilize.

  • For puffy and swollen eyes, make a wet compress of 4 tablespoons freshly grated raw potato. Place on the eyes for about 15 minutes, then rinse with cold water.


  • To reduce swelling and for bags under the eyes, brew a cup of strong rosehip tea. Soak 2 cotton balls in the tea or use 2 tea bags, lie down and place over the eyes.


  • Take tea bags and soak them in warm water and use them as eye pads.


  • Soak cotton pads in cold milk and place over closed eyes for five to ten minutes.


  • DARK CIRCLES UNDER EYES

  • Cut a fresh fig in half, place a half over each eye.


  • Apply crushed Mint leaves around eyes for five to ten minutes.


  • Gently massage Almond Oil around the eyes before bed times, or a nutritive herbal oil.


  • Soak cotton pads in cold milk and place over closed eyes for ten minutes.


  • To lighten dark circles under your eyes, wrap a grated raw potato in cheesecloth and apply to eyelids for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with warm water.


  • The pistachio is the perfect nut to remove dark circles under the eyes. The Indian women who are the sources of the lore of this lovely book grind a few pistachio nuts with a teaspoon of milk and gently apply this to the delicate area around the eyes. Then they wash it off after half an hour. Like so many natural remedies, this one does not work overnight. It takes time and patience. That is why consistency and routine is so important. It is important to impart not only the remedy but also the understanding of why and how it works, so you will not be tempted to abandon it in haste. Use a mortar and pestle to grind the pistachios to a paste.


  • Avoid rubbing your eyes. This aggravates the problem and can damage sensitive areas around the eyes.


  • Pat on concealer. A concealer is more opaque than a foundation and meant to be used sparingly. For best results select a concealer that is just one tone lighter than your foundation. Or, if you are wearing concealer alone, match the concealer to your shade of skin. Since baggy skin tends to be darker, you want to blend it correctly, says Olive. Using an eyeliner brush, apply concealer to the dark areas, then blend with your pinky finger, patting very lightly. Finish with foundation and with light powder, or powder alone, to set the concealer.

    TIRED, IRRITATED EYES

  • To soothe tired, irritated eyes, cut the end of a cold cucumber into 1/4 inch thick slices. Apply a cool slice to each eye.


  • Raw potato slices laid on sore eyes reduces heat and redness.


  • For eye puffiness, any tea bag (herbal is better, especially Eyebright), slightly cooled, placed on the eyes while you rest.


  • For tired or bloodshot eyes, soak sterile cotton balls or soft cloth in cold skim milk. Place over eyes for 10 minutes. Rinse entire face in warm, then cool, water.


  • cold tea bags will remove the tiredness from eyes but Witch Hazel will reduce the puffiness.





  • MEDICAL APPROACHES TO EYE BAGS, DARK CIRCLES, AND PUFFINESS

    Dermatologists talk about a paradigm shift in eye-bag treatment. (These happen with exciting frequency in the fertile beauty sciences.) Instead of aggressively removing fat, many health care providers now favor filling in the area between lower lid and cheek by injecting fat or collagen, reducing the pouchy look from below. This can take less than an hour, and the cost ranges from $368 (for collagen) to $1,226 (for fat), according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Surgeons' fees for a blepharoplasty are about $2,500, which doesn't include the price of the operating room and anesthesia.

    Another trend is the growing use of lasers, which are said to be able to shrink the fat pads and stimulate the production of collagen. The same lasers used to remove tattoos are now being used to erase some dark circles.

    Even the old blepharoplasty is getting a face-lift. Some surgeons are experimenting with moving the fat pad back where it belongs and tightening the muscle that holds it in place, a procedure not yet widely accepted because of the risk that it might impair the eye's ability to look down.

    Years ago surgeons took as much fat as possible, making patients look good short term, but as they aged, they began to look hollowed out. Youthful is not necessarily tighter. Youthful is fuller, more voluptuous, more three-dimensional volume. Alas, youthful is also more and more elusive with age. Creams help at 35, and fat injections help at 45. But when eye bags begin really to droop, they may need surgery, lasers and fillers, not to mention periodic touch-ups. That is, until the next paradigm shift comes along.
