  • eye floaters

Bits of cellular debris floating within the eye are commonly referred to as floaters. Because these floaters cast shadows over the retina, the individual sees small specks that move slowly before the eyes, especially in certain lights and against certain backgrounds. They often appear as transparent, gray or black dots, specks, cobwebs, squiggles, strands or any variety of other shapes. These specks and strings move when you move your eyes, so when you try to look at them, they appear to dart away. Although they can be annoying they are considered harmless.

Most eye floaters are caused by age-related changes that occur as the jelly-like substance (vitreous) inside your eyes become more liquid. When the vitreous becomes more liquid, microscopic fibers within the eye clump together. These clumps of debris float around within the vitreous cavity, and they case tiny shadows on your retina, which you may see as floaters. Eye floaters are most noticeable when you look at a plain bright background such as a blue sky or a plain white wall. Most people tend to ignore them.

Elderly and nearsighted people are most likely to complain of floaters. Most floaters eventually become less noticeable and are considered benign. In most cases, the floaters eventually settle down to the bottom of the vitreous cavity out of the line of vision. In rare instances, eye floaters can become so numerous that they significantly interfere with your vision.

Floaters that coalesce into long, stringy strands may be caused by a disorder called fibrillar degeneration of the vitreous. This condition is usually caused by excessive exposure to sunlight. If you notice a sudden increase in the number of eye floaters you see, especially if you also see flashes of light or notice that your vision becomes hazy, you should contact your eye care specialist immediately. These can be symptoms of a retinal tear or a retinal detachment, which requires prompt attention.

Eye floaters most commonly occur as a result of age-related changes in the vitreous, the jelly-like substance that fills your eyeballs and helps them maintain their round shape. Millions of fine fibers are intertwined within the vitreous. These fibers are attached to the retina, the light-sensitive tissue that lines the back of your eyes.

Over time, the vitreous changes in consistency and partially liquefies - a process that causes it to shrink and pull away from the interior surface of the eyeball. Most people over the age of 40 experience this phenomenon to some extent. Over 50-percent of people over 70 years of age report seeing floaters. As the vitreous shrinks and sags, it clumps up and gets stringy. Other spots can be caused by little bits of protein trapped within the eye during pregnancy. Trauma to the eye or breakdown of the vitreous humour may also cause spots and floaters. Bits of this debris block some of the light passing through the eye, casting tiny shadows on your retina. Many floaters remain in the eye for long periods of time before they gradually disappear.

Usually, these changes in the vitreous occur gradually. But in some cases, a section of the vitreous will pull away from the retina suddenly - causing many new floaters to appear all at once. You might also see flashes of light when the fine fibers in the vitreous tug on your retina.

Sometimes, these fine fibers pull so hard that they cause your retina to tear and pull away from the back of your eye. While a vitreous detachment by itself does not threaten your sight, it can cause a retinal tear or a retinal detachment - a medical emergency that requires urgent treatment. A retinal detachment can lead to permanent vision loss.

Floaters are commonly found in nearsighted people and people with food allergies and candidiasis. Vitreous detachment is also common in diabetes, but the highest rate of complaints of floaters is in people over the age of 70. This is when the prevalence of a vitreous detachment jumps from 10-percent of the population to 63-percent.

From Chinese Medicine perspective, floaters are an indication of congestion in the liver, kidney and colon. The herbs and nutrients recommended below are chosen for their abilities to eliminate congestion in these organs in order to keep the vitreous of the eye clear from these annoying specks, as well as to help strengthen the retinal tissue and integrity of the blood vessels.

Chronic stress in one's life may also play a role in the generation of floaters, so having a routine of relaxation and meditation is very important.

  • Age over 40.
  • Nearsightedness.
  • Eye trauma.
  • Complications from cataract surgery.
  • Diabetic retinopathy.
  • Inflammation of the eye.

  • retinal detachment

Most eye floaters require no treatment. If your eye floaters are so numerous that they significantly interfere with your vision, your health care provider might suggest a surgical procedure that uses a hollow needle to withdraw the vitreous from your eye. The vitreous is replaced with a saltwater solution or an artificial gel. However, this procedure can cause retinal detachment and cataract, and it may not remove all floaters.

There are a few eye care providers that are performing laser surgery for floaters, but one of the major criteria for one's eligibility for this procedure is the location of the floaters in the vitreous fluid. In one website, they described that most people that may be eligible for laser surgery would have had a post vitreous detachment (PVD), which sometimes pushes the floaters toward the middle of the eyes and away from the retina and lens.

This procedure has not yet been accepted by most of the medical community, probably due to the associated risks.

Zeaxanthin is considered by experts to be the most important carotenoid antioxidant for eye protection. It is the most needed by the eye but the least available in the diet. Dosage of 6 mg per vegetable capsules is recommended for maximum eye protection. Caution: Most eye products do not contain zeaxanthin at all or have small amounts since it is very expensive, including adding a token amount often listed in micrograms (mcg) such as 800 mcg or less, and often it is synthetic.

South American Zeaxanthin (concentrated from pesticide-free South American marigold (not from a synthetic source) is the most important carotenoid (a special class of nutrients) for eye health and protection. Diet provides only about 180 mcg/day. Therapeutic levels of 6 mg per vegetable capsule are critical for protection during injury or illness. Studies recommend 4 mg per day total (both zeaxanthin and lutein) to prevent AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration). Research shows it helps prevent age-related macular degeneration and cataracts (in combination with lutein). Zeaxanthin helps effectively quench free radicals (singlet oxygen & peroxyl radical) with lutein, protecting the macula, retina and lens of the eye.

Lutein is included as a recommended supplement for eye care. A dosage of 3.5 mg per vegetable capsule containing natural-source lutein, another key carotenoid antioxidant, for its superior benefits in eye health. Lutein (from marigold - not synthetic source) has been proven to help protect the macula, retina, lens and more. Together, zeaxanthin and lutein in a formula work as powerful synergists, with the sum of their benefits far exceeding their individual effects. For example, together they help absorb near-to-UV light which can damage the retina.

  • Most people have a few floaters bouncing around inside their eyes. But you should contact an eye specialist promptly if you notice a flood of new floaters, especially if they are accompanied by lights flashing in your peripheral vision. These painless symptoms could be caused by a retinal tear, with or without a retinal detachment - a sight-threatening condition that requires immediate attention. Even waiting a few days can result in permanent loss of sight.

  • If you or a family member (such as a child) are having problems distinguishing colors, you may need to be tested for color blindness.

  • If you or a family member are having problems with vision and/or you suspect an infection. Call your health care provider immediately if you experience severe eye pain or a sudden change in your vision, such as loss of vision or double vision.

  • If you have any increase of symptoms. You may need frequent changes in your eyeglass prescription. If you have blurred or double vision that develops slowly; are having a problem seeing because of daytime glare or have difficulty driving at night because of glare from headlights, you need to see your health care provider.

  • If you have any unexpected or unusual symptoms. There may be underlying health issues that need to be addressed.

  • If you are having vision problems that are affecting your ability to perform daily activities.

  • Call your child's health care provider if your baby does not look directly at or respond readily to faces or large, colorful objects by age 2 to 3 months or if your child scowls, squints, or shields his or her eyes more than expected when in sunlight, or light seems to hurt your child's eyes.

  • You and your family members should have your eyesight checked regularly by your health care provider to rule out any problems and to receive a prescription for contacts or eyeglasses, if they are needed. Preserve you vision. It is very important.
