Pages listed in the Health section of MoonDragon.org covers a wide range of health issues and concerns that many of us have to face and work with in our lives. I have gathered information from many resources, including the internet, to supply up-to-date recommendations in proper nutrition, holistic and alternative therapy approaches, and links to other websites that might be of benefit to my readers. I have arranged the various indexes by subject as well as alphabetical to make it easier for readers to find what they are looking for. I have provided links to specific nutritional guidelines, organizations, therapies and so forth that might be helpful in becoming informed consumers with regards to our health and our health care.
I have tried to refrain from using terms such as "physician" or "doctor" in these pages since there are many types of practitioners, licensed and unlicensed, certified or uncertified. There are many types of practitioners and health care approaches in the United States that do not have licensing or certification available, but this does not mean that these practitioners do not know what they are doing or that the health care approaches do not work. We, as homebirth midwives, have been trapped in this situation for decades. Some states provide licensing and certification, some states it is illegal to deliver babies at home using a midwife. It varies greatly. Keep in mind...Licensing or certification does not necessarily make a competent practitioner. Governmental or medical approval of a health care approach does not necessarily mean that it works for all individuals or that it is the only approach to remedy a certain situation. The United States and the current allopathic medical community has been very backward in accepting new approaches or even old approaches that are used in many other parts of the world for centuries.
Most of the information found on these pages has been gathered from various medical resources (allopathic and holistic) and from personal experiences of consumers. Your own health care provider may recommend certain procedures or tests be performed to help in diagnosis and treatment of your particular health condition. You will need to consider these, do research on the pros and cons, side effects, complications and prognosis of each recommendation. You will have the final and ultimate decision about which of the approaches available may work best for you and your particular situation. Not all recommendations will work for all individuals. These pages are available to inform and assist in your research, not to diagnose or remedy any particular health issue. They do not take the place of your personal health care provider or midwife.
These pages will be added to and/or edited as time goes on. If you do not see a particular page there yet when you click on a link, do not be concerned. This means that I am currently working on this page and it has not been uploaded to the website. It will be at some future date, so, please continue to check back often.
Many health issues and disorders in the body occur if the body is overcome by stress and suffering from insufficient nutritional intake due to poor eating habits. The descriptions of the conditions may help you identify whether you may have a particular illness. If your symptoms match those given for a certain illness, confirm your suspicions by visiting your health care provider.
Your health care provider may recommend that certain diagnostic tests be performed to help in making a diagnosis. Some tests, such as amniocentesis or surgical biopsy, are invasive and may have potential complications associated with them. Other tests, such as urinalysis, are not. Many diagnostic tests - especially the newer ones such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CAT) scans - can be quite expensive. Always be sure you understand exactly what a test involves before agreeing to it, how it is done, what it will show, why it is necessary in your case, what the potential risks are, how much it will cost, and anything else you need to know to feel confident in making a choice. You should also inform your health care provider about all medications (including natural medications) and nutritional supplements you take regularly; any known allergies to foods, medications, anesthetics, x-ray materials, and/or other substances; pregnancy, if applicable; and any other special concerns you may have.
Once a diagnosis has been confirmed, refer to the appropriate dietary guidelines, recommendations, and supplementation program suggested on this website that may be able to help in your recovery. Always be sure to learn as much as possible about the use of any supplement you take. Most of the suggestions can be utilized either alone or in conjunction with other therapies. However, if you have any questions about the appropriateness of any suggested nutrients or other therapy, discuss it with your health care provider.
Certain products may be recommended by brand name and/or by specific manufacturers. These recommendations may appear on their own or in parentheses following a generic term for the substance. These are not the only products available or the only ones that will work. There are many good supplements by many different manufacturers that will work as well as the recommended product. New products are available to the market all the time. These recommendations are given for particular products because of their effectiveness and good quality. Links to many of these products to resources for on-line purchasing may be added, but again, these may not be the only retail stores to carry them. You should do an internet search for price and quality of any recommended substance.
