GENERAL MEASURES
If you experience any of the symptoms of a heart attack, contact your health care provider and go immediately to the emergency room of the nearest medical facility or hospital, even if symptoms last only a few minutes. Half of all heart attacks deaths occur within three to four hours of the onset of the attack, so a person suffering from a heart attack requires immediate medical attention.
Make sure your diet is well balanced and contains plenty of fiber. Some studies have found that among the sources of dietary fiber - cereal, vegetables, and fruits - that fiber from breakfast cereals may appear to most beneficial.
Eat plenty of raw foods. For protein, eat broiled fish and skinless turkey and chicken, which are low in fat.
Include garlic and onions in your diet. They contain compounds that help to reduce serum cholesterols.
Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. An 8 year study of almost 40,000 men found that men who ate 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day had a 39 percent lower risk of stroke than those who did not.
Add raw nuts (except for peanuts), olive oil, pink salmon, trout, tuna, Atlantic herring, and mackerel to your diet. These foods contain essential fatty acids.
Do not consume stimulants, such as coffee and black tea, that contain caffeine. Studies show that coffee stresses hormones in the body, putting coffee drinkers at greater risk of heart disease. Also avoid tobacco, alcohol, chocolate, sugar, butter, red meat, fats (2 grams or less saturated fat per serving, particularly animal fats and hydrogenated oils), fried foods, processed and refined foods, soft drinks, spicy foods, and white flour products, such as white bread.
Drink steam-distilled or quality bottled water. Avoid tap water. Get at least eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid every day. It is recommended that you drink at least 80 ounces of water a day as part of your fluid intake. One study found that men who drank at least 5 glasses of water had a 51 percent lower risk of heart disease than those who did not. For women, the risk of heart disease was 35 percent lower.
Eliminate all sources of sodium from your diet. Read all labels and avoid those food products that have "soda", "sodium", or the symbol "Na" on the label. These indicate that the product contains sodium. Some foods and food additives that should be avoided on a salt-free diet include:
- Monosodium glutamate or MSG (Accent flavor enhancer).
- Baking soda.
- Canned vegetables.
- Commercially prepared foods.
- Diet soda drinks.
- Foods with mold inhibitors.
- Foods with preservatives.
- Meat tenderizers.
- Saccharin (found in Sweet'n Low), and products containing saccharin.
- Some medicines and dentifrices (toothcare products).
- Softened water.

If you take an anticoagulant (blood thinner) such as warfarin (Coumadin) or heparin, or even aspirin, limit your intake of food high in vitamin K. Eating foods containing vitamin K increases the blood's tendency to clot, so they should be eaten only in small amounts. Foods that are rich in vitamin K include alfalfa, broccoli, cauliflower, egg yolks, liver, spinach, and all dark green vegetables. To enhance the effect of anticoagulants, eat more of the following: wheat germ, vitamin E, soybeans, and sunflower seeds.
QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE
THE TOP 10 HEALTHIEST FOODS FOR YOUR HEART
When it comes to promoting a healthy cardiovascular system, not all foods are created equal. Following is a list of the top ten foods for heart health.
1. FRESH FRUIT: Fruit contains fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.
2. BEANS & LEGUMES: Beans and legumes contain fiber, and plant proteins that help to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.
3. FISH: The omega-3 fatty acids in cold-water fish help to lower LDL levels.
4. DARK LEAFY GREENS: Spinach, mesclun, Swiss chard, argula, and other greens help to reduce levels of a blood enzyme implicated in heart disease.
5. AVOCADOS: Avocados are rich in potassium, which helps to regulate heart rhythm and blood pressure, and mono-unsaturated fats, which lower LDL levels.
6. WHOLE GRAINS: Fiber and B vitamins are their greatest assets.
7. NUTS: A good source of mono-unsaturated fats and minerals.
8. SOY FOODS: These are useful in keeping correct blood fat levels and are rich in phytoestrogens.
9. SPICES & HERBS: Fat is better digested with the help of the antioxidants and phytochemicals available in many herbs. 10. WHEAT GERM & FLAX MEAL: These are good for boosting your intake of fiber, vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids.
CONSIDERATIONS
Avoid stress, and learn stress-management techniques.

Studies suggest that the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) may help to prevent cardiovascular disease. DHEA therapy has been linked with a 48 percent reduction in death from heart disease in recent populations.
MoonDragon's Health Therapy: DHEA Therapy
It is not recommended that people that take up drinking to prevent heart disease, but research has shown that having a small amount of beer, wine, or liquor occasionally may make it more likely that you will avoid heart disease.
The so-called bad cholesterol, LDL is commonly measured and is considered a key predictor of cardiovascular risk. A component in cholesterol called apolipoprotein B (apoB) may be more closely linked to heart disease risk factors, and measuring apoB rather than LDL levels eliminates errors that can be caused by the size of the LDL particles. Small, dense LDL particles are more harmful than larger ones; thus, it would be nice to know how many small particles there are in the mix. But current tests do not differentiate for particle size or number. Testing for apoB gives the actual number of LDL particles, and the number of small particles can then be calculated. Canada has instituted testing for apoB and is currently updating the guidelines for lipids and diabetes to include an apoB test.
Foods containing certain plant extracts that have been shown to reduce cholesterol levels now may be labeled as such. The FDA has given food manufacturers the go-ahead to put labels on foods containing plant sterol esters and plant sterol esters to indicate that they may reduce the risk of coronary artery disease. These work by blocking the absorption of cholesterol from the diet, and have been known for some time to reduce the blood cholesterol levels that are responsible for most heart attacks. Plant sterol esters can be found in soybean oil as well as many fruits, vegetables, nuts, cereals, and other plants. Plant sterols occur naturally in smaller quantities in some of the same sources.
Erythromycin, an antibiotic that has been marketed for over 50 years, has been implicated in cardiac deaths. The problem appears to be interaction with some newer drugs that tend to increase its concentration in the blood. Although it has long been known that erythromycin could present problems when used intravenously, nobody suspected a problem with the pill form. New calcium channel blockers and perhaps other medications can slow the breakdown of erythomycin. The result is trapping of salt inside resting heart muscle cells, prolonging the time until the next heartbeat starts and sometimes triggering an abnormal, fatal rhythm.
Current research indicates that soy isoflavones may enhance coronary blood flow and prevent blocked arteries.
The Japanese folk remedy natto, which comes from the popular food made from fermented soybeans, may be very helpful in both preventing and treating cardiovascular disease. It fights the buildup of fibrin (a protein that reduces circulation), breaks up clots, and restores blood circulation in diseased vessels. Studies have indicated that natto may be an effective replacement for warfarin (Coumadin). A side benefit was an approximate 10 percent lowering of both diastolic and systolic blood pressure. More research is taking place to develop health care provider's guidelines for the use of this natural medication.
A Taiwanese study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine indicated that habitual tea drinkers may have a significantly reduced risk of hypertension as compared with non-tea-drinkers. Although the tea-drinking group was generally found to be more obese, consume more alcohol, exercise less, and smoke more that the non-tea-drinking group in the study, those habitual tea drinkers who consumed between 120 and 599 milliliters of tea in a given day has a remarkable 65 percent reduction in hypertension. No mechanism has been proposed to explain these results; however, discussions regarding the effects of caffeine, the neurotransmitter theanine, and the antioxidant effects of tea polyphenols (all compounds found in tea) have been advanced. These may act to relax and dilate blood vessels.
Policosanol, a product made from sugar cane wax, appears to have some effect in slowing down the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver as well as increasing the liver's absorption of LDL, and increasing levels of HDL. One of its actions is to inhibit the oxidation of LDL (oxidized LDL promotes the destruction of the blood vessels). The product is available from health stores in several formulations from different makers, and also can be purchased in combination with coenzyme Q-10.
According to some studies, magnesium supplementation can correct some types of irregular heartbeat, and could save the lives of many people with heart trouble.
The mechanisms responsible for omega-3 fatty acids; reduction of cardiovascular disease risk are still being studied. However, it appears that benefits include decreases in triglyceride levels and blood clots, lower risk of sudden death, improved arterial health, and lower blood pressure.
The largest women's health study ever done, the Women's Health Initiative, had 162,000 participants. Some findings taken from the study that were recently presented at an American Society for Reproductive Medicine conference indicated that taking birth control pills during reproductive years was not as harmful as was at one time thought. In fact, the study indicated a lower risk for heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and other related cardiovascular disease (CVD) problems. The overall risk reduction for CVD was 8 percent, and a bonus was a risk reduction of 7 percent regarding any type of cancer. Researchers believe the type of hormones, and when they are taken in life, seems to be what makes them helpful at one point and harmful at another.
People who have had ischemic strokes and had a clot somewhere in the brain where it was impractical to remove had only one treatment possibility in the past, the clot-dissolving medication TPA. Use of TPA is a long shot by any definition, and not too many stroke patients ever receive it. A tiny experimental corkscrew-like device is now being tested that allows a surgeon to thread the device through a blood vessel in the leg to the clot in the brain, where it is used like a corkscrew to physically extract the clot. This is just like pulling the cork out of a wine bottle, according to Dr. Sidney Starkman at UCLA Stroke Center. Blood starts flowing again to the brain, and that, in the final analysis, is what it's all about.
Catheters are also used to carry specialized tools to the heart, using the femoral artery. After removing the catheter, a titanium staple is often used to stop the bleeding by closing the hole in the artery.
Arnica Montana, Arsenicum Album, Magnesia Phosphorica, and Spongia Tosta are homeopathic remedies often recommended for angina. They should be used under the direction of a qualified homeopathic health care provider.
Correcting potassium deficiencies before surgery can lessen the risks of coronary bypass surgery.
Testosterone deficiency is a factor is causing heart disease, depression, and a host of aging-related ailments in men. This is a relatively new opinion, but it is supported by fact. Many people are leery of testosterone because of media hype concerning sports-related usage. But there is more than one type of testosterone, and one is beneficial. First of all, it is true that all the anabolic steroids are bad if taken over the long term. Their molecules resemble those of natural testosterone but are chemically different and do not react the same way in the body. The notorious methyl-testosterone may be the worst of these steroids. In the body, natural testosterone is either bound (attached to a protein known as sex hormone binding globulin [SHBFG]) of free. While the total amount in the body might be the same as a man ages, more and more of it is bound rather than free. A test might show no difference in overall testosterone levels, but the bound testosterone can no longer interact with testosterone receptors and therefore is in effect biologically inert. So the free testosterone available is important to cardiovascular health in many ways. Men with low free testosterone levels are more prone to high blood pressure, obesity in general and abdominal obesity in particular, high levels of clotting factors, and low levels of clotting inhibitors. There is data that suggests osteoporosis, which affects millions of men, and depression also are linked to low testosterone levels. Aside from testosterone therapy under a health care provider's care, an herbal product that can help the body produce the testosterone naturally is the bioflavonoid chrysin (5,7-dihydroxyflavone), which is found in the passionflower plant (Passiflora coerula). Another useful herbal is an extract made from nettle root (Urtica duiuca). The latter binds to SHBG better than testosterone, which helps increase the body's level of "free" testosterone. Make sure you use a product made from the root, not the stems and leaves. Caution: Men with prostate cancer or possible prostate cancer should not take any herbal product that increases the supply of free testosterone because it can promote the growth of the cancer.
It is important for women over the age of 55, and women of any age who have gone through menopause, to consider heart disease as a possible cause of chest pain or discomfort. The chest pain may even be mild and less prominent than upper abdominal pain, shortness of breath, or nausea. Studies have shown that women are not as likely as men to receive drugs protecting them against heart disease; that hey are less likely to undergo bypass surgery or angioplasty if they have cardiovascular disease; and that, when symptoms of heart trouble occur, they do not go to the hospital for treatment as quickly as men do. Because of these factors, women with cardiovascular disease are more likely to die from it than are men in comparable health.
Research has shown that women with hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) have a sharply increased risk of developing blockages in the aorta.
Allergies may be linked to some heart attacks. When a reaction in walls of the arteries triggers a spasm in the coronary arteries, a heart attack may result. Allergies also cause temporary rapid pulse. Your pulse rate may increase after you eat certain foods or when you come in contact with particular allergens. Allergy tests are recommended to determine food or other allergen sensitivities.

Women who gain weight around the midsection in their late 40s may be experiencing insulin resistance (the beginnings of diabetes), which can lead to heart disease. Your health care provider can administer a binding protein (BP-1) test to check for insulin resistance.
Being exposed to excessive noise for more than 30 minutes can increase blood pressure considerably and can affect the heart for up to 30 minutes after the noise subsides.
Controlling high blood pressure, either with drugs or lifestyle changes (or a combination of the two), can prevent or at least delay, dangerous complications.
According to some studies, magnesium supplementation can correct some types of irregular heartbeat, and could save the lives of many people with heart trouble.

MEDICATIONS & PROCEDURES
Learn everything about any drugs that have been prescribed for you. Know what to do in case of emergency. Keep emergency and ambulance numbers easily accessible. If you have a heart condition, someone close to you should know what to do if cardiac arrest occurs. Make sure someone living with you knows how to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The American Red Cross and many local hospitals offer training in these techniques.
Nitroglycerin, which is sold in sublingual table, patch, and lingual spray form, is commonly prescribed to relieve chest pain and to improved the oxygen supply to the heart. This drug is taken at the first sign of chest pain. If dry mouth prevents sublingual nitroglycerin tablets from dissolving, the spray form may be a better choice. Nitroglycerin has some side effects, including headache, weakness, and dizziness. These usually disappear with continued use.
Substances known as thrombolytic agents, including streptokinase (Streptase) and alteplase (Activase, also known as tissue plasminogen activator [TPA]) have the ability to break up clots. When injected intravenously, they circulate through the arteries, locating and disintegrating blood clots. studies have shown that thrombolytic therapy within the first 6 hours of the onset of a heart attack increases the chances of survival. However, this treatment probably should not be used by people who have peptic ulcers, extremely high blood pressure, a history of stroke, or recent head injury or abdominal surgery.
Anticoagulant (blood thinning) drugs, such as warfarin (Coumadin), are often prescribed for those in particular danger of developing blood clots, such as people who are bedridden, cancer patients (the formation of blood clots containing cancer cells that may colonize other parts of the body is a concern), and people with certain types of cardiac arrhythmias. Studies show that, for those in peril of recurring clots, blood-thinning drugs should be taken for at least two years.
A study reported in The New England Journal of Medicine indicated that for most people, aspirin works as well as warfarin in helping to prevent recurrent strokes. Although not found in this study, the author believes that baby aspirin should work as well as regular aspirin and pose less of a risk of internal bleeding. Vitamin E (200 IU a day) along with aspirin also make an effective blood-thinning combination. All three of these kinds of agents should not be taken at the same time, however, as this might cause severe bleeding. You should never mix warfarin and vitamin E at the same time (do not mix them), as this might cause severe bleeding.
People who have had a heart attack that resulted in damage to the left ventricle have been shown to have a longer expectancy if given the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor trandolapril (Mavik) for at least two years. ACE inhibitors are a type of drug most often used to treat high blood pressure. Other ACE inhibitors include enalapril (Vasotec) and ramipril (Altace). These drugs stop the formation of a natural chemical, angiotensin II, that narrows the blood vessels. (Angiotensin II inhibitors block the action, rather than the formation, of the same chemical.) Possible side effects are constipation, dry mouth, decreased sexual desire or impotence, and a decrease in mental function.
Other drugs often prescribed for people with high blood pressure include beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, central-acting agents, and diuretics. Beta-blockers allow the heart to beat more slowly and with less force. Side effects can include a decrease in left ventricular function, a decrease in sexual desire in women, and impotence in men. Calcium channel blockers, also known as calcium antagonists, relax the blood vessel muscle. Possible side effects are sexual dysfunction, dryness of the mouth, muscle pain, and heart arrhythmia. Central-acting agents (central adrenergic inhibitors) act on the brain, preventing the nervous system from increasing the heart rate and narrowing the blood vessels. Diuretics, also known as water pills, help the kidneys get rid of sodium and water, thus reducing the volume of blood coursing around the body. Possible side effects of diuretics include dehydration, diabetes, fainting spells, and possible heart and kidney malfunctions.
Men taking medication for hypertension can suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED) as a side effect. The anti-impotence drug sildenafil (Viagra), once thought to be dangerous for such individuals, may in fact be a viable option for those with high blood pressure, researcher say. It is advisable to consult with your health care provider to determine if your medication for high blood pressure has lowered your blood pressure too much, and if any of your medications contain nitrates. The combination of nitrates and sildenafil can cause dangerously low blood pressure. Your health care provider may also suggest a stress test before making a decision about prescribing sildenafil.
The FDA asserts that taking one baby aspirin a day can reduce the risk of heart attack and/or stroke without side effects. This is disputed by some experts who believe that there is not enough evidence to support it. Caution: If you do use aspirin, keep in mind that it can cause internal bleeding and stomach ulceration.
Certain viruses may infect blood vessels, causing changes that eventually lead to heart disease. Recent studies have shown a connective between heart disease and infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, herpes viruses, and, possibly (but not conclusively) bacteria in dental plaque. According to an article in Circulation magazine, researchers have discovered traces of herpes viruses in blood vessels from people undergoing coronary bypass surgery. Researchers theorize that viruses may injure blood vessels. The inflammatory response, which is associated with the body's defense mechanisms triggered by infection, may affect the arteries and ultimately lead to the deposition of plaque there. More alarming, researchers have found that some adenoviruses, which cause respiratory infections, may cause left ventricular dysfunction that can lead to sudden death. Because of the connection between infection and heart disease, research is being conducted on the use of antibiotics and prevention of heart attacks. Data published in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicate that people who had taken either tetracycline or quinolones in the 3 years preceding this research proved to be at a lower risk for heart attacks.
Research is being conducted into the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the cardiovascular system. NO keeps the surface of blood vessels smooth so that platelets cannot bind together to form potentially dangerous clots. Researchers are aware that too much NO is toxic to the body, and studies are being conducted into controlling NO levels. Research has shown that by removing oxidants from the blood, vitamins C and E stabilize the nitric oxide and allow it to rise to higher levels. Additionally, L-arginine acts to increase the NO level, as does moderate exercise. Thus, exercise, along with vitamins C and E and L-arginine, might serve to increase the nitric oxide levels in the blood and prevent and/or reduce blood vessel lesions.
Trans-myocardial laser revaculization is a method of treating refractory angina. In this technique, a laser is used to create holes in the heart in order to increase the flow of blood to deprived areas of the heart.
Defibrillators are devices used to restore a normal rhythm to the heart during a heart attack. Portable defibrillators are available, and are commonly used in aircraft and police cars during emergencies. The Philip's HeartStart home defibrillator is available for use in the home. It costs approximately $1,500. A defibrillator for children aged 8 and younger has also been approved and is available by prescription through Agilent Technologies, Inc. Training on the proper use of defibrillators is conducted by both the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association.
The use of a test called cardiokymography (CKG) together with electrocariograms (ECGs) may help to detect "silent" heart disease. A comparison study revealed that electrocardiograms alone missed 39 percent of heart disease cases. When CKG was used along with ECGs, only 8 percent of cases were undetected.
For further information on cardiovascular disease, you can consult the American Heart Association or the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
ACTIVITY
Keep your weight down. Obesity is a risk factor for heart attacks and high blood pressure. Get regular moderate exercise. Caution: If you are over 35 and have/or have been sedentary for some time, consult with your health care provider before beginning any exercise program.
DIET, HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS & NUTRIENTS
Researchers have found that Pomegranate Juice not only seems to prevent hardening of the arteries by reducing blood vessel damage, but also may reverse the progression of atherosclerosis (plaque buildup). This may be due to the high antioxidant content of the juice, which is higher than that found in other fruit juices, including blueberry, cranberry, and orange. The results of this study appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Citrin, an extract from the plant Garcinia cambogia, inhibits the synthesis of fatty acids in the liver, thus helping to prevent the accumulation of potentially dangerous fats in the body.

VITAMIN THERAPY FOR HEART DISEASE
Your heart is the most important muscle in your body. As the most active muscle in the body, the heart requires proper nutrition. Poor nourishment has a profound effect on the heart. Research has shown that as people age, their eating habits get worse, thus increasing their risk of cardiovascular disease. In this case supplementation has to be resorted to provide the body with the proper nutrition.
Caution:
- If you are pregnant, or intend to get pregnant, or if you have liver disease, consult your midwife or health care provider before taking supplemental vitamin A.
- If you have high blood pressure, limit your intake of supplemental vitamin E to a total of 400 international units daily.
- If you are taking an anticoagulant (blood thinner), consult your health care provider before taking supplemental vitamin E.
BIOFLAVONOIDS: These are a group of compounds that provide color to citrus fruits and vegetables. In conjunction with Vitamin C, some bioflavonoids are potent antioxidants to improve the strength of small blood vessels or capillaries. They prevent the oxidation of cholesterol in the blood and prevent the clotting of the blood by making the blood less thick.
BETACAROTENE: Beta carotene is the plant form of vitamin A. It can be converted into vitamin A by the body. Beta carotene, as an antioxidant, protects against heart disease by inhibiting the conversion of LDL into its more dangerous, oxidized form. One study found that 50 mg of beta carotene taken every other day reduced the incidence of major coronary and vascular events. Beta carotene is found in yellow-orange fruits and vegetables.
VITAMIN C: Recent research has shown that taking plenty of Vitamin C provides more protection against heart disease than either maintaining a low blood cholesterol or eating a low fat diet. It is believed that the beneficial effect of Vitamin C is from a variety of factors:
- Vitamin C plays a role in the conversion of cholesterol into bile acids. If vitamin C is lacking, less cholesterol is converted. Instead, the cholesterol may build up in the arteries, blood and liver.
- Vitamin C is needed for the normal metabolism of blood fats. It builds the collagen that helps to keep artery walls strong.
- Vitamin C reduces the high blood pressure and reduces the hardening of the arteries.
- Vitamin C affects the levels of glutathione in the blood. Glutathione is a compound that helps guard against heart disease. Lower levels of Vitamin C was found to result in lower levels of glutathione in the blood stream.
- Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps to control the free radicals and other oxidants that can convert LDL into its more dangerous, artery-clogging form.
- Vitamin C supplementation drives down cholesterol in people with high cholesterol and low levels of vitamin C in the blood. Adding pectin, or other agents that bind cholesterol, increases the effect.
- The level of vitamin C in the blood has been found to be related to the CHD-related angina pain. The higher the level of vitamin C, the less pain. Good sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, strawberries and sweet red peppers.
VITAMIN E: Vitamin E is believed to prevent the oxidation of LDL, the bad cholesterol, thus reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. The vitamin may play a role in regulating the way that cells lining the arteries proliferate and repair themselves, and may protect them from the damaging oxidants. This helps to prevent the formation of blockages on the artery walls. Vitamin E supplementation may increase the protective HDL. The amount of vitamin E in the blood may be inversely related to the death from heart attacks. In other words, a greater level of vitamin E in the blood may translate to a lower risk of death. Vitamin E strengthens the immune system and heart muscle, improves circulation, and destroys free radicals. Caution: Use this supplement only under the supervision of a health care provider. Recommended Dosage: Start with 100-200 IU daily and increase slowly, adding 100 IU each week until daily dosage is 800-1,000 IU. If you take an anticoagulant drug, do not exceed 400 IU daily. Use d-alpha-tocopherol form.
SELENIUM: The amount of selenium in the blood and red blood cells may be related to the risk of CHD and heart attacks. The lower the level of selenium, the more the risk. Selenium activates glutathione proxidase, one of the most potent antioxidants, that prevents the free radicals from attacking LDL cholesterol and prevent its conversion into its more artery-damaging, oxidized form. Selenium also helps to "thin" the blood. When the blood is "thin," there is less chance that unnecessary blood clots will form and trigger a heart attack by lodging in an already-narrowed artery. Lower levels of selenium has also been linked to higher levels of the incidence of stroke. A 1982 study of 11,000 men and women in Finland found that people with low blood selenium levels had an increased risk of developing coronary artery disease. After accounting for other risk factors, 22 percent of the heart attack deaths in this population were attributed to low selenium levels. Another study of Finnish men in 1991 linked low selenium levels to atherosclerosis of the carotid arteries. A recent study has shown that those who had higher selenium levels in the blood had 60 percent lower risk of heart disease than people who had lower levels of this mineral. When patients who had heart attacks were treated with selenium or selenium-rich yeast, they had fewer second attacks than those who were given a placebo. Good sources of selenium include barley, shrimp and whole grains. Recommended Dosage: RDA for selenium is 70 micrograms for men, and 55 micrograms for women. If you are at high risk for heart disease, you may take 200 mcg daily under professional supervision. However, it you are pregnant, do not exceed 40 mcg daily. Selenium is provided by many foods including tomatoes, poultry, shellfish, garlic, meat, and egg yolks.
NIACIN (VITAMIN B-3): Recently, Niacin has got publicity for reducing cholesterol. It has also been found effective in reducing the incidence of second heart attack by 30 percent. Higher levels of Niacin can lead to hot flushes and liver damage. So, be very careful when taking therapeutical doses of this vitamin. Consult a qualified person before starting this treatment. Caution: Do not take niacin if you have a liver disorder, gout, or high blood pressure. Recommended Dosage: 50 mg daily. Do not exceed a total of 200 mg daily if you have a history of rheumatic heart disease or other valvular heart problem.
VITAMIN B-6 (PYRIDOXINE): Pyridoxine deficiency has been linked to heart disease. Extremely important for formation of red blood cells and neurotransmitters. Animal studies have shown that diets deficient in B-6 can lead to hardened, narrowed arteries. This may be because B-6 helps to prevent the unnecessary blood clots that can block arteries. B-6 is also necessary to control homocysteine that appears to damage artery linings and encourage heart disease. Recommended Dosage: 50 mg daily. B-6 is found in whole grains, lentils and sweet potatoes.
FOLIC ACID: Recent studies have shown that folic acid can ward of heart attacks and strokes. A deficiency of folic acid can increase the risk of heart disease 200 to 300 percent. Folic acid was shown to break down homocysteine, an amino acid. Homocysteine was shown to increase the risk of heart attack by 300 percent. Higher levels of homocysteine were found to cause significant blockages in the carotid arteries. (Carotid arteries are found in the neck. They deliver blood to the brain.) Ten percent of all heart disease in the United States is believed to be from high levels of homocysteine. Hence folic acid, which breaks down homocysteine, is a very important deterrent to the heart disease. It is found in foods such as navy beans, broccoli, orange juice, green leafy vegetables, fruits and legumes. Recommended Dosage: 400 mcg daily.
VITAMIN B-12: Shortage of Vitamin B-12 has been associated with elevated levels of the dangerous homocysteine. Elevated levels of homocysteine can damage the inner surface of arteries. This can be treated and/or prevented with vitamin B-12, vitamin B-6 and folic acid. Many cardiologists are now using B-vitamins to help prevent coronary artery disease.
CALCIUM: In the proper amounts, calcium may help to keep cholesterol under control and may prevent dangerous blood clots. Too much calcium may increase the risk of heart disease, especially if there is too much calcium in relation to magnesium. Sources of calcium include milk, sardines (with bones) and cheese.
MAGNESIUM: A lack of magnesium has been linked to an increased risk of CHD, heart attacks and improper heartbeats. Many health care providers report using magnesium as a first-line treatment for treating irregular heart rhythms. Magnesium supplementation may reduce the total cholesterol, increase the beneficial HDL and prevent unnecessary "clumping" in the blood that can trigger a heart attack. The mineral may also reduce the symptoms of angina or may prevent future attacks. What is remarkable is that magnesium is beneficial even when a heart attack is in progress. In a study involving 2,300 people, some patients were given magnesium injections while they were having heart attacks. The injections cut the death rate by 25 percent. Magnesium can be found in almonds, parsley and spinach. Caution : An excess of magnesium can cause diarrhea. If you develop loose stools, reduce the dosage slightly until you arrive at the best dosage for your body. If you suspect a heart attack, get medical attention immediately.
Calcium, magnesium and Vitamin B-6 should be taken together for proper absorption and effectiveness. Recommended Dosage: 1,500-2,000 mg calcium daily, in divided doses, after meals and at bedtime. 750-1,000 mg magnesium daily, in divided doses, after meals and at bedtime. Take with 50 mg vitamin B-6.
CHROMIUM: Chromium is a trace metal that is vital to human health. Nutritionists are not sure exactly what chromium does in the body or how much is needed to maintain health. Chromium supplements were found to help raise HDL cholesterol levels - an important benefit in CHD. Chromium is important for normal metabolic functions, particularly for carbohydrate metabolism. It plays a significant role in regulating blood sugar. A Recommended Daily Allowance has not been established for chromium. A daily intake of 50 to 200 micrograms is often recommended. It is estimated that 50 to 90 percent of Americans are not getting enough chromium in their diets. Trace amounts of chromium are present in many foods. The best dietary source is brewers yeast, which contains chromium in the form of GTF (glucose tolerance factor). Other good sources of chromium include peanuts, legumes, and whole grains. Chromium deficiency was found to increase the blood cholesterol levels of rats. Chromium supplementation, on the other hand, was found to bring the cholesterol values back down. More impressively, some rats were found to actually develop fatty plaques of atherosclerosis in their arteries as a result of chromium deficiency. Between 1968 and 1982 at least 6 independent trials investigated the effects of chromium supplements on blood cholesterol levels in healthy volunteers. Chromium supplements appeared to produce small reductions in serum cholesterol levels. What was significant, though, was that HDL levels rose by an average of 10 percent. A 1978 study checked blood chromium levels in patients undergoing coronary angiograms and found that low chromium levels could account for 17 percent of their atherosclerotic lesions, even after considering cholesterol and other cardiac risk factors. In a 1991 study, 63 men in North Carolina suffering from hypertension and taking beta-blockers were studied. (Beta blockers are known to lower HDL and raise LDL cholesterol levels.) Half the volunteers received chromium, while the others took a placebo. Complete cholesterol profiles were obtained at the start of the trial and after 2 months of treatment. The results were significant: chromium supplements boosted HDL cholesterol levels by an average of nearly 6 points, a 16 percent increase. No changes occurred in total cholesterol, triglycerides, or body weight. No side effects were observed. According to Harvey Simon, MD of Harvard Medical School, a 6-point increase in HDL, which was achieved in the chromium trial, should reduce the risk of heart attack by about 20 percent. HDL plays an important protective role in atherosclerosis. Unfortunately, it is very hard to boost HDL levels in some people. So chromium is a natural way to boost the HDL. Experts say that if your cardiac risk is rated moderate to high, and if your HDL is below 40, you should try to raise it. Exercise, maintenance of ideal body weight, and smoking cessation should be part of everyone's plan. But if these critical changes don't bring your HDL up to protective levels, consider chromium supplementation. Recommended Dosage: Take 200 micrograms 3 times a day.
ZINC: Zinc is an antioxidant that helps maintain proper immune function. Note: Take zinc with food to prevent stomach upset. If you take over 30 milligrams of zinc on a daily basis for more than one or two months, you should also take 1 to 2 milligrams of copper each day to maintain a proper mineral balance.
COPPER: Copper plays an important role in human metabolism and in the formation of red blood cells. It only takes one and a half to 3 milligrams of copper per day to fulfill these needs. Most of us get more than enough copper from cereals, barley, legumes, nuts, shellfish, and meats. It is possible that too much copper may be harmful. Studies from 1991 and 1992 in Finland reported an association between high blood copper levels and heart attacks. The association was strong; the highest copper levels were linked to a 4-fold increase in heart attacks. It is suggested that copper can promote oxidation of LDL cholesterol.
IRON: Iron is a vital nutrient. It's an essential component of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying pigment in red blood cells. Americans are often low in iron. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia in the United States. Iron deficiency is particularly common in women, who lose red blood cells with each menstrual period. The best dietary source of iron is red meat. Iron is also present in deep green vegetables, legumes, and certain fish. Even so, American women are estimated to get only two-thirds of the iron they need from their diet. Health care providers often recommend iron tablets to women who are menstruating, pregnant, or lactating. The September 1992 issue of the journal Circulation reported that a high level of iron in the blood was an important heart attack risk factor. The study was performed in Finland, where 1,931 middle-aged men were observed for an average of 3 years. All the conventional cardiac risk factors were evaluated. Results showed that iron was strongly associated with the risk of heart attack. The men with the highest blood iron levels were 2.2 times more likely to suffer heart attacks than men with low blood iron. Each milligram of iron in the daily diet was found to increase the heart attack risk by 5 percent. The association between iron and heart attack persisted even after other risk factors were considered; in fact, iron was second only to smoking as a risk factor. It is postulated that iron promotes the formation of free radicals, which can oxidize LDL cholesterol, thus promoting atherosclerosis. However, five studies in the USA found no link between heart attacks and dietary iron intake, blood iron levels, or body iron stores. These were large population studies. One study (1993) evaluated the body iron stores of 22,071 men in the U .S. Physicians' Health Study. Another evaluated dietary iron intake in 45,720 male health professionals. The third study checked blood iron levels in 14,916 men, and the fourth monitored iron levels in 171 men and 406 women older than 62. The fifth study in 1994 evaluated body iron stores in 4,518 Americans who had been tracked for over 20 years. A 1994 study from Iceland also found no link between iron levels and heart attacks in 2,036 people who were observed for more than 8 years. Thus, the results are contradictory as to the risk of iron to heart attack.
ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID (ALA, ALPHA-LIPOTENE): Alpha-lipoic acid, works with other antioxidants in the body to increase their effectiveness against oxidative stress. It helps the body to recycle other antioxidants. Instead of these vitamins being used up during the metabolism, they're kept available and used again. Alpha-lipoic acid can also help the body rid itself of toxic heavy metals, such as mercury and cadmium. And as a strong antioxidant, alpha-lipoic acid helps to keep arteries clear by preventing the LDL ("bad") cholesterol from being incorporated into the artery walls. Since it is both fat and water soluble, it can work inside and outside of the body cells.
BROMELAIN: An enzyme found in pineapple, bromelain may "thin" the blood and help to clear away debris from artery walls. One study has shown that bromelain can relieve the pain of angina, which is associated with CHD.
COENZYME Q-10 (COQ10): Heart muscle biopsies in patients with various cardiac diseases showed a CoQ10 deficiency in 50-75 percent of the cases. All the well functioning hearts had an adequate amount of CoQ10 in the tissue. To make it more interesting, when supplemental CoQ10 was introduced into the ailing hearts, they started getting signs of new life. The obvious conclusion is that adequate levels of CoQ10 is necessary for a well functioning system. When the levels of CoQ10 drops below optimum levels, disease takes over or already had done so. CoQ10 increases oxygenation of heart tissue. Recommended Dosage: 50-100 mg 3 times daily.
L-CARNITINE: L-Carnitine is a non-protein amino acid that is found in the heart and skeletal muscle. Carnitine has been shown to lower triglyceride and total cholesterol levels, while at the same time improving HDL levels. Since foods that are rich in L-Carnitine such as red meat and dairy products are also high in saturated fat, it is recommended that supplements of L-Carnitine be taken instead.
LECITHIN: An antioxidant found in eggs, corn and soybeans, lecithin helps prevent the conversion of LDL into its more dangerous, artery-damaging form. Lecithin may also lower the total cholesterol.
PYCNOGENOL: Pycnogenol is found to be more effective than aspirin in reducing buildup of platelets in the arteries, a major risk factor in heart disease.
SOY PROTEIN: Eating soy protein is found to reduce moderate to high concentration of blood cholesterol significantly (average of 10 percent drop in blood cholesterol was observed in a University of Kentucky study.)
TAURINE: Taurine helps to stabilize the heart beat and correct cardiac arrhythmias. An important antioxidant and immune regulator, it is necessary for white blood cell activation and neurological function. The sublingual form is recommended. Recommended Dosage: 1,000 mg daily. Take with 50 mg of vitamin B6 and 100 mg of vitamin C for better absorption.
ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS: Essential fatty acids help to prevent unnecessary blood clotting, reduce inflammation, and regulate blood pressure. They are found in black currant seed oil, borage oil, evening primrose oil, fish oil, and flaxseed oil. Recommended Dosage: Take 500 to 1,000 milligrams of any of these oils twice daily.
ACTIVATED CHARCOAL: Activated charcoal is a special type of capsulated charcoal that is used in hospital emergency rooms as an antidote to many poisons. In one study, seven patients with elevated cholesterol were given 8 grams of activated charcoal three times a day. Prior to this treatment, these patients had not responded to 10 years of treatment with cholesterol medicines. After four weeks of activated charcoal therapy, their total cholesterol fell by 41 percent, and their LDL (bad cholesterol) fell by 25 percent. Meanwhile, their HDL (good cholesterol) rose by 8 percent. Recommended Dosage: Start with half a gram. Gradually raise the dosage to a gram of activated charcoal twice a day, with meals.
PECTIN: Pectin is a fiber found in grapefruit, apples and other fruits and vegetables. Human and animal studies have verified the effectiveness of pectin in lowering or counteracting the effect of cholesterol. In one study, it was found that when patients were given pectin supplementation, their total cholesterol went down by 7.6 percent, and the harmful LDL by 10.8 percent after 8 weeks. The power of grapefruit pectin was studied in pigs, whose cardiovascular systems are similar to humans. Even when the animals were deliberately fed a high-cholesterol diet, the grapefruit pectin swept away fatty plaque deposits away from the artery walls.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Take Vitamin B-6, Vitamin C (1000 to 5000 milligrams), E (400 to 800 IU), Vitamin B Complex, Beta Carotene (daily supplements of 15 milligrams or 25,000 IU), Copper, Magnesium (400 milligram supplement per day) and Lecithin. Selenium tablets (200 micrograms) may help. Taking 400 micrograms of Chromium tablets daily may help prevent the buildup of cholesterol in arteries.
The following list summarizes the vitamin, mineral and herbal regimen to help control or reverse the heart disease:
- 1,500-2,000 mg Calcium daily, in divided doses, after meals and at bedtime. And 750-1,000 mg Magnesium daily, in divided doses, after meals and at bedtime. Take with 50 mg Vitamin B-6.
- 30-100 milligrams of Coenzyme Q-10 three times a day.
- 1000 milligrams of Vitamin C three times a day.
- 400 IU of Vitamin E twice per day.
- 200 micrograms of Selenium a day.
- 50 milligrams of Vitamin B-6 a day.
- 500 milligrams of Carnitine three times a day.
- One capsule of herb Ginkgo Biloba three times a day.
