    CANCER DESCRIPTION

    CELLULAR REPRODUCTION OUT OF CONTROL

The entire human body is made up of cells, each of which contains its own genetic material, or DNA - a long string of molecules that tells the cell what to do. In a healthy body, cells divide at a controlled rate so as to grow and repair damaged tissues and replace dying cells. This predetermined rate of cell division is what keeps our bodies healthy.

When the body is injured - for example, if you have a cut - the cells surrounding the cut reproduce to replace the ones that have been harmed. These cells "know" to stop reproducing once they have filled in the injured area.

If cells keep multiplying when new ones are not needed or necessary, a mass of tissue called a growth, or tumor, is formed. Sometimes, a cell begins to reproduce for no obvious reason. The "daughter" cells that it produces forms a lump. This is cancer. Often, a cell from this lump, or tumor, spreads to another part of the body and begins reproduction there. These cells are not receptive to the normal signal to stop reproducing. Eventually, this abnormal tissue interferes with the ability of the body and its cells, organs, and other structures to perform their appointed functions, and illness or death results.

    BENIGN OR MALIGNANT

A tumor can be either benign or malignant. Benign tumors are not cancerous. They can occur anywhere in the body and generally do not pose a threat to health, do not metastasize (spread to other parts of the body), and do not grow back if removed. Malignant tumors are cancerous. They are usually serious and can be life-threatening. Malignant tumors grow uncontrollably, interfere with normal metabolic and organ functioning, and have the ability to metastasize and invade other tissues.

If a portion of a cell's DNA is damaged, the cell can become abnormal. When the abnormal cell divides, it forms new cells that contain a photocopy of the damaged genetic material. This is an ongoing process occurring constantly within our bodies. Most of the time, our bodies have the ability to destroy these abnormal cells and maintain a sort of cellular equilibrium. If a crucial portion of the DNA is destroyed, however, and the abnormal cells cannot be controlled any longer, cancer forms. All cancer cells have two things in common; they grow uncontrollably and they have the ability to metastasize. They can spread through the lymphatic system, the bloodstream, or avenues such as the cerebrospinal fluid (the watery cushion that protects the brain and the spinal cord). The immune system generally does not recognize cancer cells as dangerous or foreign.

No one knows exactly why some cells behave in this way and exactly what causes the cell damage that initiates the cancer process. The chain of events that leads to cancer is very complex, and each individual body reacts differently. A combination of genetic, behavioral, environmental, and lifestyle factors are believed to be involved in turning normal cells into abnormal cells, and abnormal cells into cancer. There are also factors called inhibitors (such as certain vitamins and nutrients found in fruit and vegetables) that are believed to slow the process, while other factors, called promoters (such as smoking, or eating a high fat diet), can speed up the process.

    POSSIBLE CONTRIBUTORS

We do know that certain things increase the likelihood of certain types of cancer. Possible contributors to the development and growth of cancer can be divided into 3 categories:
    • EXTERNAL: External factors include unhealthy workplace environments and exposure to air and water pollution, chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides.

    • INTERNAL: Internal factors include both genetics (heredity) and infections.

    • LIFESTYLE: Lifestyle factors are those we personally can most readily control. These are also the factors scientists believe account for the largest proportion of cancers. They include diet, smoking, drinking and sun exposure.
Environmental factors and diet are widely believed to be two of the major causes of cancer. For example, persons exposed to cigarette smoke have significantly higher rates of lung cancer than other people who are not. Regular alcohol consumption increases the risk of mouth and throat cancers. A diet that is high in fat and low in fiber is associated with a greater risk of colorectal cancer, and is a factor in breast and prostate cancer as well.

External and lifestyle factors account for 80 percent of cancer deaths in the United States. By 2004, an estimated 563,700 people were lost to cancer annually, or 1,544 a day. The following is a breakdown of the overall percentages of cancers many researchers and health care professionals attribute to different lifestyle factors:

    LIFESTYLE FACTOR
    CANCER PERCENTAGE

  • Poor diet and obesity.
  • Smoking.
  • Genetics.
  • Exposure to carcinogens in the workplace.
  • Family history.
  • Lack of exercise.
  • Exposure to certain viruses.
  • Alcohol consumption.
  • Reproductive factors.
  • Socioeconomic status.
  • Exposure to environmental pollution.

Many experts believe that what these apparently different risk factors have in common is that they increase the body's exposure to free radicals. They theorize that damage from free radicals is an important factor in causing the uncontrolled cellular growth that is characteristic of cancer.

    MoonDragon's Nutrition Basics: Free Radicals

Others believe that factors such as cigarette smoking and poor dietary habits increase the risk of cancer because they impair the immune system. In addition to blaming diet and environmental pollutants, many experts link cancer to stress, although not directly. They do believe that stress weakens the immune system, impairing the body's ability to destroy precancerous cells before they develop into cancer.

By making ourselves aware of all of the factors that may promote or inhibit the development and growth of cancer, and by taking appropriate action, we can reduce our cancer risk.

In the United States, one person dies from cancer every minute. Another 3 million have cancer, and one out of these will die from some form of this disease. There are more than 100 different varieties of cancer. They have different causes, cause different symptoms, and vary in aggressiveness (the speed at which they spread). However, most types of cancer fall into one of four broad categories:
      1. Carcinomas: Cancers that affect the skin, mucous membranes, glands, & internal organs.
      2. Leukemias: Cancers that are cancers of blood-forming tissues.
      3. Sarcomas: Cancers that affect muscles, connective tissue, and bones.
      4. Lymphomas: Cancers that affect the lymphatic system.

The seven classic early warning signs of cancer, which can be remembered by the acronym CAUTION, are the following:
    • Change in bowel or bladder habits.
    • A sore that does not heal.
    • Unusual bleeding or discharge.
    • Thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere.
    • Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing.
    • Obvious change in a wart or mole.
    • Nagging cough or hoarseness.

MoonDragon's Health & Wellness Disorders: Cancer Causes & Warning Signs

According to the American Cancer Society, 50 percent of all men and 33 percent of all women in the United States will develop some form of cancer at some point in their lives. The good news is that with the increasing information and treatment methods available today, millions of people are either living with, or have been cured of, cancer and the risk of developing most types of cancer can be reduced by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

    CANCER SURVIVAL RATES

According to a report published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, there are 9.8 million cancer survivors in the United States. A cancer survivor is defined as an individual who is still alive 5 years after his or her cancer diagnosis. Today, about 64 percent of cancer patients survive 5 years after being diagnosed, a rate that has been climbing since the 1970s, when only half as many lived that long. Breast cancer survivors make up 22 percent of the 64 percent, while prostate cancer survivors total 17 percent, followed by colorectal survivors at 11 percent. 61 percent of survivors are age 65 and older, where an estimated 1 in 6 people over the age of 65 is a cancer survivor. 79 percent of childhood cancer survivors are living 5 years after diagnosis, and nearly 75 percent are alive 10 years following diagnosis.

Just as each of us looks different, each of our bodies has its own unique composition. What some of us react well to may cause an adverse reaction in others, which is why some treatments prove to be successful for some, but not for others. This is why dietary wellness and prevention are so important. If we can keep our bodies healthy and avoid known cancer-causing agents, we have a good defense against ever getting cancer in the first place. And if you have cancer, it is imperative to maintain optimum health. If you go into battle unarmed, you do not stand much of a chance of winning, but if you go in with a full coat of armor, through the healthiest diet and nutrition, you have the best fighting chance to successfully conquer cancer.

    CANCER DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

    CERVICAL CANCER TESTS

  • Since women have been having Pap Smears, the mortality rate for cervical cancer has dropped by about 70 percent. However, Pap Smears are not always accurate - 5 to 10 percent of the results can show a false-positive reading. The most common cause of false-negative results is sampling error. This can occur as a result of either improper preparation (women should not have intercourse, douche or use any type of vaginal creams, medicines, foams, or jellies for 2 days prior to the test, and the test should be done between 10 and 20 days after the first day of the menstrual period) or inadequate cell collection. There must be enough cells from the entire cervical surface collected, placed on a slide, and preserved immediately.

  • Some tests show promise for improving the accuracy of Pap Tests. Papnet and AutoPap are two different computerized screening tests designed to improve the Pap Test's accuracy. ThinPrep is another variation on the Pap Test. It utilizes a different method of collecting the cells that can make it easier to detect cell abnormalities. Another tests, the Hybrid Capture HPV DNA test, can detect the presence of human papilloma virus (HPV), which is associated with cervical cancer. Women at higher risk for cervical cancer may want to discuss these tests with their health care providers. Research on other types of tests to detect cervical cancer is ongoing. For example, testing is underway on an at-home test that uses a tampon-like probe designed to measure cervical cells.

    BREAST CANCER SELF-TEST

MoonDragon's Womens Health Disorders: Breast Cancer Self Exam
MoonDragon's Womens Health Disorders: Breast Cancer Overview

    COLON CANCER SELF-TEST

A test kit can be purchased at most drugstores for detecting blood in the stool (an early sign of colon cancer). In one test, you simply drop a strip of chemically treated paper into the commode after a bowel movement. The paper will change to the color blue if blood is present in the stool.

If your test result is positive, take a second test in three days. If the second test is also positive, see your health care provider immediately. The presence of blood in the stool does not necessarily mean that you have cancer. The consumption of red meat or the presence of diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, polyps, ulcers, or an inflamed colon can all cause a positive test result. About 10 percent of those who test positive for blood in the stool have cancer.

    TESTICULAR CANCER SELF-TEST

With the fingers of both hands, gently roll each testicle between the thumb and the fingers, checking for hard lumps or nodules. Be sure to include the epididymis (the rope-like portion) in your exam. Normally your testicles feel smooth ad a little spongy. A mass will feel firm but not painful when pressed, unless there is bleeding inside the tumor. If you find a suspicious lump, see your health care provider.

You will be better able to feel for lumps if you check for them after a warm bath or shower, when the scrotal skin is relaxed.

MoonDragon's Health Information Disorders: Prostate Cancer

  • Men who receive either of 2 kinds of treatment in testicular cancer appear to be at increased risk for leukemia. A recent study highlighted those getting radiation treatment and Cisplatin, a standard cancer chemotherapy agent. The study also noted that the higher the dosage, the greater the risk. Researchers are quick to point out that the benefits of both treatments far outweigh the small increased risk of leukemia.

  • The risk of prostate cancer for males who have undergone vasectomies may be as much as 3 times greater than that of males who have not had vasectomies.

    CANCER TREATMENT

    CANCER TYPE DETERMINES TREATMENT

Medical treatments will vary depending upon the type of cancer diagnosed. Discuss your options completely with your health care provider and do research about each option before deciding upon a plan of action. Consult with practitioners of alternative or complementary therapies that may be helpful when used with standard medical treatments. Some medical treatments will have side effects and some complementary therapies can help to relieve the side effects of these medical treatments. Regardless of the medical treatment you and your health care provider decide on for a course of action, follow a nutritional regime that will help you and your body to fight cancer and build your immune system for the battle ahead.

    CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL THERAPIES

  • Cancer has been reported to be badly under-diagnosed. In one autopsy review, of those found with malignancies, over half of the deaths were caused by undiagnosed cancer. There are many hospitals, research centers, and treatment centers that specialize in cancer treatment.

  • Conventional therapies (chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery) many not be as effective at fighting cancers of the lung, pancreas, liver, and bone, and advanced colon and breast cancers, as they are at fighting other types of cancer.

  • In some cases, radiation therapy may be recommended. This involves aiming concentrated x-rays directly at a tumor to kill the cancerous cells. Radiation therapy too has unpleasant side effects, including fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting, and loss of appetite.

  • Some types of cancer are treated with chemotherapy and can apparently be cured with this treatment. Cancer chemotherapy is the administration of highly toxic medications meant to kill cancer cells. Side effects of chemotherapy can include hair loss, extreme nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, sterility, and damage to the kidneys and heart. Certain nutrients may help the body avoid some of the damage done by this treatment, among them Vitamin B-6 (Pyridoxine), Coenzyme Q-10, Glutathione, and Vitamin C.

  • Most people are unfamiliar with head and neck cancer yet it is the 5th most common form of cancer. Patients with head and neck cancer suffer a high mortality rate. Head and neck cancer does not include brain tumors. Treatment includes radiation therapy, which is often implemented following surgery. However, radiation therapy can cause adverse, even lethal, side effects. Lethal radiation necrosis (tissue death) in the brain is one potential side effect of radiation therapy. Also, stroke rates increase by 5 times in people who have undergone radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. Stroke is the official cause of death among many people who have had head and neck cancer who later die after radiation therapy treatments. For this reason, cancer cure statistics can be misleading. Even though radiation therapy may cure cancer, non-related cancer deaths seem to be a long-term side effect to radiation. Although more people with cancer are now living beyond 5 years after diagnosis, premature death can be direct result of toxic therapies used to eradicate cancer. It is not recommended that people with head and neck cancer refuse radiation therapy, as it often buys years of extra life. Simply, they should take extra precautions to reduce their risk of stroke.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness Disorders: Stroke

    DRUG THERAPY

  • Moderate use of low-dosage aspirin may aid in killing tumor cells. The New England Journal of Medicine found that patients who had been treated for colorectal cancers had a lower rate of recurrence when they took a daily dose of aspirin and that aspirin reduces the growth of polyps in the colon that may lead to cancer. However, the Nurses' Health Study at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital, came to the unexpected conclusion that women who take aspirin twice daily increased their risk of getting pancreatic cancer.

  • Non-small-cell lung cancers, which account for most of lung cancer in the United States, may be treated with porfimer (Photofrin), gefitinb (Iressa), paclitaxel (Taxol) in combination with the commonly used cancer drug cisplatin (Platinol), and gemcitabine (Gemzar) in combination with cisplatin.

  • Docetaxel (Taxotere) is another drug approved for treating non-small-cell lung cancer that does not respond to cisplatin-based chemotherapy.

  • Doxorubicin (Adriamycin) is a potent chemotherapeutic drug used for treating many forms of cancer. However, irreversible heart damage can occur with use of this drug. Supplementation with Vitamins A and Vitamin E and Selenium are suggested to alleviate some of the side effects of this drug.

  • The genetically engineered virus ONYX-015 is designed to infect and kill cancer cells without harming healthy ones. It is under study at the University of Texas and the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Other drugs undergoing testing as cancer therapies include:
    • Antiostatin and endostatin, promising anti-cancer agents that stop the growth of new blood vessels to feed tumors.
    • BR96-DOX, a drug that zeros in on cancer cells, leaving the healthy cells alone. Its active ingredient is doxorubicin, a proven chemotherapy cancer-killing substance.
    • Hydrazine sulfate is a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor available as a dietary supplement that may help offset the inability to eat, fatigue, weight loss, and muscle deterioration often associated with cancer. If also has been studied for over 3 decades as a treatment for cancer itself. Possible side effects include nausea and vomiting, tingling, loss of feeling, and inflammation of the nerves in the hands and feet, and irregularities in glucose level, alkaline phosphatase, and liver function tests have been reported. Dizziness, weakness, drowsiness, and itching may also occur.
    • Interleukin-2 (IL-2), an immune system chemical that is currently used for kidney and skin cancer, may have potential use against other forms of cancer, including leukemia. Since its discovery, IL-2 has decreased the rate of death from kidney cancer by more than 30 percent.
    • Vaccines that may treat existing cancers or prevent recurrence by prompting the immune system to differentiate between normal, healthy cells and cancer cells.
    COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES

  • Hyperthermia, a procedure in which the body tissue is exposed to extremely high temperatures (up to 106°F), may be effective against tumor cells and can be used alone or in combination with radiation therapy and other therapies. Researchers believe that the heat may damage tumor cells or deprive them of the nutrients they need to live. It is important that hyperthermia is applied in a safe way under a health care provider's care.

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been effective in reducing the death of healthy tissue due to radiation treatment for cancer.

  • MoonDragon's Health Therapy: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

  • Dr. Virginia Livingston of the Livingston-Wheeler Clinic in San Diego developed a vaccine against an organism called Progenitor cryptocides. According to Dr. Livingston, if the immune system is weakened through poor diet, the consumptions of "infected" foods, or old age, this microbe can gain a foothold and initiate cancer cell growth. She claimed that 9 out of 10 people who are treated with her vaccine, plus dietary and vitamin therapy, experience improvement.

    LIFESTYLE CONSIDERATIONS

  • The incidence of leukemia among children who were breast-fed has been found to be significantly lower than that among bottle-fed children.
  • Urinating frequently may reduce your risk of bladder cancer by releasing dangerous substances from the body.

  • EXERCISE & STAYING ACTIVE

  • Get regular exercise. Cancer is less prevalent in physically active people. Exercise also helps to stave off depression and promotes oxygenation of the tissues.

  • Obesity in men may cause of contribute to colon and rectal cancer; in women, it has been linked to gallbladder, cervical, uterine, and breast cancer. Overweight women are more likely to develop cancer of the uterine lining than other women and tend to do poorly if they develop breast cancer. Fat affects the level of sex hormones in the body. Hormones produced by the adrenal glands are converted into estrogen in fat tissue, so the greater the amount of fat present, the higher a woman's estrogen levels are likely to be. Estrogen stimulates cells in the breast and reproductive system to divide.

  • MoonDragon's Womens Health Disorders: Obesity

    STRESS MANAGEMENT

  • Avoid stress as much as possible. Learn relaxation and stress management techniques to help you deal with those stresses you cannot avoid.

    ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS

  • Check the radon level in your home. Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally within the earth's crust that has been classified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a known carcinogen. Radon test kits are easy to find at hardware stores and are relatively inexpensive. If radon is found, sealing cracks and improving ventilation in the basement will usually improve the situation.

  • Because of potential low-level radiation leakage, avoid microwave ovens. Do not sit close to television sets - sit at least 8 feet away. Also avoid x-rays.

  • High-voltage power lines have been under study as a possible contributor to cancer. Researchers at the National Institute of Environmental Health Science (NIEHS) have reported that, while it is a possibility, it is not likely. High electromagnetic fields can make some sensitive individuals feel sick (called electromagnetic radiation sickness). Symptoms of electromagnetic radiation sickness are for example sleep disturbances, dizziness, heart palpitations, headache, blurry sight, swelling, nausea, a burning skin, vibrations, electrical currents in the body, pressure on the breast, cramps, high blood pressure and general unwell-being. According to many testimonies of victims the symptoms appear in the vicinity of sources of electromagnetic radiation, like GSM- and 3G (UMTS)-antennas, cellphones, DECT wireless telephones and WIFI wireless networks. Many times the experiences are blind. Radiation measurements taken afterwards and investigations show, that the radiation density indeed is increased. Many sufferers find out the relationship with the radiation, when they stay for a while elsewhere, where the symptoms diminish or disappear. When they return home the symptoms immediately appear again. Many of the patients decide to move to another place. Others try to shield themselves against the radiation, for example building a Faraday cage of fine wire mesh.

  • Use only glass or stainless steel cookware and wooden cooking utensils. Avoid plasticware, aluminum cookware and utensils.

  • Avoid chemicals such as hair sprays, cleaning compounds, waxes, fresh paints, and garden pesticides. Do not use any products in aerosol cans. Many chemicals promote the formation of free radicals in the body, which may lead to cancer. People with cancer can further weaken their immune systems by coming into contact with chemicals. The body then must expend energy trying to protect itself from the damaging chemicals instead of fighting the cancer.

  • Fluoride (which is in toothpaste, tap water, and every product made with tap water) may be a risk factor for cancer.

  • Remove known and suspected carcinogens from your life and from your home. A group of 75 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) experts ranked pesticide residues among the top 3 environmental cancer risks.

  • Do not take any drugs except for those prescribed by your health care provider.

  • Use a shower head that removes the chlorine from your water. A product called Showerwise from Waterwise will do this.

  • SMOKING & CANCER RISKS

  • The single most avoidable cancer risk is smoking. Lung cancer was a rare disorder until the 20th century, when cigarette smoking became widespread. Today lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. In 2003, there were 171,900 new lung cancer diagnoses and 157,200 deaths. Cigarette smoke is made up of more than 4,000 chemicals, including 43 that are known to be cause cancer. It also contains the poisonous gases nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide. Besides lung cancer, smoking can cause cancers of the cervix, kidney, pancreas, and stomach. The cancerous effects of smoking are multiplied by alcohol consumption, and the two are frequently used in combination. Research suggests that if you quit smoking when precancerous signs are found, damaged lung tissue may return to normal, oftentimes within 5 years. Recent evidence has shown that women who smoke are at greater risk of developing lung cancer than male smokers. Regular exposure to second-hand smoke can increase a non-smoker's chance of getting cancer by 30 percent.

  • People whose mothers smoked during pregnancy are 50 percent more likely than children of non-smoking mothers to develop cancer later in life. These findings confirm the harmful effects of smoking has on the developing fetus.

  • MoonDragon's Health Therapy: Smoking & Quitting

    COLON CANCER CONSIDERATIONS

  • A gene linked to the development of colon cancer (when it becomes defective and shuts off in individuals who do not seem to have a family history of the disease) has been identified by researchers at the Ireland Cancer Center at University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. The gene, called hMLH1, normally acts to correct errors in cell replication. If it becomes "shut-off", colon cancer may be the result. It is known that this gene can be "turned on" again by an experimental drug called 5-azacytidine. This drug, however, is toxic to humans, so researchers are working to develop a safe form. They say that if the gene can be turned back on again in people with tumors of the colon, their cancers might be more responsive to chemotherapy, and new tumors might possibly be prevented.

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome does not increase the risk of colon cancer.

  • MoonDragon's Health & Wellness Disorders: Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  • A more accurate test for colon cancer may soon be available that would detect mutations in the cells that have sloughed off polyps and cancers. This new test should result in fewer false-positives.

  • It is now thought that intestinal cancer takes about 20 years to develop.

  • Take Coffee enemas alternated with enemas made by adding 1 ounce of fresh Wheatgrass juice to 1 cup of water. Do this daily to help the body eliminate toxins. Wheatgrass enemas contain many nutrients and enzymes, and are used in many alternative clinics for cancer treatment. Also use cleansing enemas with Lemon and water or Garlic (Kyolic liquid) and water two or three times weekly.

    DIET, NUTRITION & SUPPLEMENTS

  • Many people with cancer have achieved good results with a macrobiotic diet.

  • Nutritional supplements and better dietary habits offer great support to cancer patients who are receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy, or who are in remission. Taking Shark Liver Oil prior to radiation therapy has been shown to protect healthy tissue against injury from the procedure. Shark Liver Oil contains alkylglycerols (AKGs), Vitamin A and E, Omega-3 fatty acids, trace minerals, and squalene. A study published in the European Journal of Cancer in 1997 reported that Glutathione can reduce adverse side effects associated with chemotherapy.

  • Shark Cartilage has been shown to be helpful for certain types of cancer, including cancer of the breast, cervix, pancreas, and prostate, as well as Kaposi's sarcoma, a type of skin cancer. It suppresses angiogenesis (the development of new blood vessels), depriving cancerous tumors of nourishment and, often, causing them to shrink and die.

  • Squalamine, a substance present in shark tissue (especially in the liver), is currently being studied by Georgetown University and the Cancer & Therapy Research Center for its effectiveness in slowing the growth of tumors.

  • German physician Dr. Hans Nieper has been using fresh raw Cabbage and Carrot juice with excellent results. Dr. Nieper also uses Carnivora, a substance derived from a South American plant, Dionaea Muscipula, a particular species of venus flytrap plant, used to fight cancer.

  • Some health care providers use Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), either alone or in combination with other therapies, to treat certain forms of cancer.

  • The hormone Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is believed to help prevent cancer by blocking an enzyme that promotes cancer cell growth. A form of DHEA, 7-Keto-DHEA, unlike DHEA itself, is not converted into testosterone or estrogens. It may be a better option for those at high risk for breast, endometrial, uterine, and prostate cancers.

  • MoonDragon's Health Therapy: DHEA Therapy

  • Studies have shown Grape Seed Extract to not only enhance the development of normal cells, but also inhibit abnormal cell growth.

  • Research is ongoing regarding the anti-cancerous effects of the hormone Melatonin, which is produced by the pineal gland. It has strong antioxidant effects and acts as a free radical scavenger of free radicals that induce DNA damage. Melatonin may inhibit tumor growth by interaction with interleukin 2 (IL-2) and seems to have a beneficial effect particularly on endocrine tumors. The synthetic form is preferred since the natural form, recovered from animal pineal glands, could contain harmful viruses. Melatonin can be used to good effect on various types of tumors, under supervision of a health care provider. It seems to be effective in fighting cancers of the male and female reproductive system, breast, and prostate. Studies are still needed to determine the effects of long-term use of melatonin in supplemental form.

  • Kombucha tea has energizing and immune-boosting properties, and may be valuable in fighting cancer.

  • MoonDragon's Health Therapy: Kombucha Tea Therapy

The nutritional program and other recommendations outlined on this page and other cancer-related pages are designed for persons who have been diagnosed with cancer, as well as for those who wish to enhance their chances of avoiding this disease. Vitamins should be taken in injection form whenever possible. However, if you must use oral supplements, take them daily (usually with meals) or as instructed by your health care provider or nutritionist.

Follow directions carefully for each supplement or nutritional therapy (Vitamin E should be taken before meals, and supplements should not be taken at the same time as fiber, for instance). Combine appropriate supplements that work together and enhance their absorption ability. Know which supplements should not be taken with others if they compete in absorption uptake. Use only quality natural supplements from a reliable source. Links have been provided for recommended supplements so you will be able to obtain them without having to do a lot of searching.

Unless otherwise specified, the dose recommendations here are for persons over the age of 18. For children between 12 and 17 years old, reduce the dose to 3/4 the recommended amount. For children between 6 and 12, use 1/2 the recommended dose, and for a child under 6 years old, use 1/4 the recommended amount. If you have any questions, consult with your health care provider or nutritionist and follow their recommendations specific for your situation and health status.

    USEFUL CANCER INFORMATION

    1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When health care providers tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

    2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

    3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

    4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

    5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

    6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

    7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs. br>
    8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

    9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

    10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

    11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

    CANCER CELLS FEED ON:
      A. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka Honey or Molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or Sea Salt.

      B. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk - cancer cells are being starved. There have been claims that dairy products increase the risk of cancer. However, it is more likely that it is fat that is the problem, not milk. Almond, rice, and soy milk are good low-fat alternatives. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology as disproved suggestions that there is a link between lactose and/or galactose (sugars found in milk) and ovarian cancer.

      C. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

      D. A diet made of 80-percent fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20-percent can be from cooked food including Beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104°F (40°C).

      E. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green Tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. It is best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Quality spring water is an option (make sure it is a reliable brand for purity). Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

    12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup. Toxic buildup may lead to colon cancer.

    13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

    14. Some supplements build up the immune system. Inositol Hexaphosphate (IP-6), Antioxidants, Vitamins, Minerals, Essential Fatty Acids (EFA), and other nutrients are used to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like Vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

    15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

    16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

    E-MAIL URBAN MYTHS & WARNINGS

URBAN MYTHS - Subject: CANCER UPDATE FROM JOHN HOPKINS HOSPITAL, US

    1. No water bottles in freezer.
    2. No plastic containers in microwave.
    3. No plastic wrap in microwave.

URBAN MYTH #1: PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES IN FREEZER

John Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.
WILL FREEZING PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES CAUSE CANCER
      (By About.com: Cancer - www.cancer.about.com)

      Question: Freezing Plastic Water Bottles

I got an email saying freezing plastic water bottles can cause cancer. I normally freeze them to drink throughout my workday as it melts. Is this true? Can freezing plastic water bottles cause cancer?

Answer: Recently, I received the same email warning that freezing water in plastic water bottles could expose consumers to dioxins, a manmade compound which can cause a variety of health problems, even cancer. The email gave credit to the findings to Johns Hopkins University.

After further research, I found the e-mail to be a hoax.

The folks at Johns Hopkins sat down with Dr. Rolf Haden, assistant professor at Department of Environmental Health Sciences and the Center for Water and Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Haden dispelled the myth saying "This is an urban legend. There are no dioxins in plastics. In addition, freezing actually works against the release of chemicals."

The bottom line is that there is no cancer risk in drinking water from frozen water bottles.

URBAN MYTH #2: PLASTIC CONTAINERS IN MICROWAVE

Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital, was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body.

Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper is not bad but you do not know what is in the paper. It is just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

URBAN MYTH #3: PLASTIC WRAP IN THE MICROWAVE

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead. This is an article that should be sent to anyone important in your life.

    MICROWAVES & PLASTIC CONTAINERS
(By Canadian Cancer Society - www.cancer.ca)

A widely circulated e-mail suggests that heating food in a microwave using plastic dishes or plastic wrap will increase the risk of developing cancer. There is some scientific evidence to suggest that substances used to manufacture plastic products may leach out of the container and into the food it holds, and that some of them may be carcinogenic (cancer-causing).

The Canadian Cancer Society is aware that this e-mail may be a source of concern for Canadians, so it is providing this information to explain what we know and how you can minimize any risk that may exist from using plastic when reheating food in your microwave.

There are a number of different kinds of plastic containers:
    • Some are designed for household products.
    • Some are used to hold gardening supplies.
    • Others are specifically manufactured to store the food and liquid that we eat and drink.

Companies that make plastic containers for food storage use different substances and manufacture the containers differently than they would if they were making containers for other intended uses. Because of this, it is important to use plastic containers only as intended, particularly when storing food.

To ensure the safety of plastic containers sold with food or drinks in them, Health Canada's Food Directorate does a pre-market evaluation on the new product to determine safety. In Canada, plastic containers that do not contain food when sold, but are designed for this use, are not tested before they are brought to market and there are no guidelines to govern what substances are put in the plastic. However, the Consumer Product Safety Bureau of Health will investigate any concerns about the safety of this type of product and will ask manufacturers to remove any substances that pose a health risk.

To ensure safe use of plastic containers or wrap that is in contact with food during reheating, Health Canada states that using plastic containers and wrap for anything other than their original purpose can cause health problems. It also recommends the following:
    • Do not use plastic bowls or wrap in the microwave unless they are labeled as microwave safe. (The Food and Drug Administration in the United States suggests that packaged food with labeling instructions for heating in the package or storage containers sold for use in microwave ovens are 2 examples of such containers.) There has been some concern that food may absorb some of the plasticizer used in plastic to make it more flexible, particularly at high temperatures, when microwaving or when heating fatty or oily foods like cheese and meat. Plastic containers that release anything more than an insignificant amount of these substances are not approved for use in Canada.

    • If plastic containers are re-used as storage, let the food cool before storing, then refrigerate it immediately. Avoid visibly damaged, stained or unpleasant smelling plastics and containers.

    • Never heat or store food in plastic containers that were not intended for food. One-time use containers, like margarine tubs, tend to warp or melt in the microwave, and this may allow more of the substances in plastic to migrate into the food.
