    BRONCHITIS DESCRIPTION

    BRONCHIAL INFLAMMATION

The lungs are among the body's largest organs. The air we breathe enters our bodies through the trachea (windpipe) which connects with the bronchi, the breathing tubes that lead into the alveoli (air sacs) in the lungs. In the lungs, air is exchanged for carbon dioxide.

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of your bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from your lugs. People who have bronchitis often cough up thickened mucus, which can be disordered. Bronchitis may be either acute or chronic. Often developing from a cold or other respiratory infection, acute bronchitis is very common. Chronic bronchitis, a more serious condition, is a constant irritation or inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, often due to smoking. Acute bronchitis usually improves within a few days without lasting effects, although you may continue to cough for weeks. However, if you have repeated bouts of bronchitis, you may have chronic bronchitis, which requires medical attention. Chronic bronchitis is one of the conditions included in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Health care providers use the term Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) to describe lung damage caused by emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Emphysema hurts the lung's air sacs while bronchitis injures the airway tubes. Both diseases make it hard for the lungs to take in enough oxygen.

    basic lung anatomy

    THE STRUCTURE OF THE LUNGS

The bronchial tubes branch into the right and left lobes of the lungs, just like the branches of a tree. Their task is to distribute inhaled air in the lung tissue to the tiny aveoli, or air sacks. Each air sack is surrounded by fine blood vessels, where oxygen is taken up by the living red cells, or corpuscles. Bronchitis is a condition in which the mucous membrane covering the bronchial tubes becomes infected.

Bronchitis is the inflammation or obstruction of the bronchial tubes, the breathing tubes that lead tothe lungs. This inflammation results in a buildup of mucus. It is an ailment that frequently follows a cold or the flu, bronchitis may be caused by either viruses or bacteria. Bronchitis is often accompanied by coughing, pain in the lungs (chest and back), fatigue, sore throat, difficulty breathing (wheezing, tightness in the chest), sudden chills, shaking and fever. Bronchitis occurs mostly in the winter and usually starts as a cold. Bronchitis can either be acute or chronic.

    ACUTE BRONCHITIS

Acute bronchitis is usually caused by an infection, which can be bacterial, viral, chlamydial, mycoplasmal, or caused by a combination of agents. It typically follows an upper respiratory tract infection, such as a cold or influenza. Most cases of acute bronchitis are self-limiting, that will subside in a matter of weeks with full recovery. In some cases, however, the condition can lead to pneumonia. This is more likely to occur in those who have a chronic respiratory disease or other debilitating health problem.

    CHRONIC BRONCHITIS

Chronic bronchitis results from frequently irritation of the lungs and is the result of irritated mucous membranes - which are frequently caused by inhaling caustic substances, such as exposure to cigarette smoke, air pollution or other noxious exhaust gases and fumes, rather than infection.

Allergies may also be the cause of chronic bronchitis. As chronic bronchitis diminishes the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs, the heart works harder in the attempt to compensate. Over time, this can lead to pulmonary hypertension, enlargement of the heart, and ultimately, heart failure.

People suffering from chronic bronchitis experience a swelling of the mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes and a narrowing or inflammation of the airways.

Chronic bronchitis is one of the most common diseases seen by otolaryngoloists, allergists, and primary care health care providers. Specialists in occupational medicine have long known that an adverse environment produces a vulnerability to respiratory infections. Climatic factors and epidemics of viral infections also increase the risk. Among people who live or work in unhealthy environments, shortness of breath is frequently aggravated by dampness and cold, exposure to dust, humid weather, or even minor respiratory infections.

More women than men develop chronic bronchitis. The disease is more prevalent in those 45 years and older. IN 2003, an estimated 1,100 Americans died from results of chronic bronchitis. The COPD family of lung disorders are the 4th leading cause of death and it is predicted that by the year 2020, COPD diseases will become the 3rd leading cause of death.

    bronchitis

    BRONCHITIS FREQUENT SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

SYMPTOMS FOR EITHER ACUTE OR CHRONIC BRONCHITIS

  • Inflammation of bronchi.
  • Build up of mucus (sputum) in lungs, throat. Mucus can be clear, white, yellowish-gray or green in color - rarely, it may be streaked with blood.
  • Coughing.
  • Slight fever, sudden chills, shaking.
  • Chest discomfort. Pain in the chest and/or back.
  • Fatigue.
  • Sore throat.
  • Difficulty breathing, wheezing, shortness of breath.
  • Bronchospasms. Swelling of the mucous membranes and hypersecretion by the bronchial glands frequently accompany bronchospasm.

  • If you have acute bronchitis, you may have a nagging cough that lingers for several weeks after the inflammation resolves. Chronic bronchitis is defined as a productive cough that lasts at least three months, with recurring bouts occurring for at least two consecutive years. If you have chronic bronchitis, you are likely to have periods when your signs and symptoms worsen. At those times, you may have acute bronchitis on top of your chronic bronchitis.

    BRONCHITIS CAUSES

    ACUTE BRONCHITIS

  • Acute bronchitis is usually caused by viruses, typically the same viruses that cause colds and flu (influenza). In acute bronchitis, bronchospasm is more often associated with viral (rather than bacterial) infection. However any infection, which can be bacterial, viral, chlamydial, mycoplasmal, or caused by a combination of agents can cause bronchial inflammation. Bronchitis typically follows an upper respiratory tract infection, such as a cold or influenza.

  • CHRONIC BRONCHITIS

  • Chronic bronchitis most commonly results from frequent irritation of the lungs such as from exposure to cigarette smoke or other toxic fumes, rather than from infection. Air pollution, dust or toxic gases (fumes) in the environment or workplace can contribute to the condition. Allergies also may be the cause of chronic bronchitis.

  • BRONCHITIS RISK FACTORS

    RISK INCREASES WITH

  • Smoking. People who smoke tobacco cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, or any form of herbal cigarettes (such as marijuana) or who live with a smoker are at higher risk of both acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis.

  • Exposure to environmental pollutants and toxic fumes. Exposure to irritants on the job increases your risk of developing bronchitis. Certain lung irritants include grains or textiles, chemical industry, petroleum oil-based exposures, such as gasoline or diesel fuels, or occupational hazards often encountered in certain professions such as firefighters, coal miners, construction workers, plumbers, painters, autobody workers, laboratory technicians, and others, are often exposed to toxic substances and can be at greater risk of developing bronchial problems. Regular exposure to irritants at home with cleaning fluids and irritating aerosols can create problems. Occupational hazards, working or living in unhealthy environments that are dirty, damp, moldy, cold, with exposure to dust and airborne pollutants.

  • History of allergies, asthma, emphysema or other COPD disease.

  • Minor respiratory infections. Illness caused from a viral, bacterial, or other infectious agent. Illness often leaves a person with low resistance to secondary infections. This may be a result from another acute illness, such as a cold, or from a chronic condition that compromises your immue system. Older adults, infants and young children have greater vulnerability to infections.

  • Climatic factors and epidemics of viral infections also increase the risk.

  • Gastric reflux can contribute to bronchitis. Repeated bouts of severe heartburn can irritate your throat and make you more prone to developing bronchitis.

  • PREVENTIVE MEASURES

    LIFESTYLE CHOICES

  • Do not smoke cigarettes or use any other lung irritating substance. Avoid second had smoke.
  • Eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy immune system.
  • Avoid exposure to infectious agents and environmental factors.
  • Avoid allergens, if you have allergies.
  • Wash your hands frequently to reduce catching a viral infection. Use a hand sanitizer between washings.
  • Wear a surgical mask if you have COPD while at work and in crowds to prevent becoming infected by others.
  • Consider a yearly flu vaccination. Many cases of acute bronchitis results from influenza, a virus.
  • Avoid sick people. Take precautions if you must be around them to protect yourself.
  • Avoid crowded areas (goes with sick people) such as trains, subways, elevators, etc.
  • Keep your kids healthy. They are notorious for bringing home infectious microbes from school.

  • CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL TREATMENT

    MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS

If you have or suspect you have chronic bronchitis, you may be referred to a health practitioner specializing in lung diseases (pulmonologist). At your appointment you may be asked questions as part of your health history and lifestyle habits. These can help with diagnosis and possible management of your condition. You might also want to bring a family member or friend to your appointment. Sometimes it can be difficult to remember all the information provided. Someone who accompanies you may remember something that you missed or forgot. These are some questions you may be asked:
      When did your symptoms begin?
Have your symptoms been continuous or occasional?
Have you recently had a cold or the flu?
      Have you ever had pneumonia?
Have you had episodes of bronchitis lasting more than three weeks in the past?
In between episodes have you noticed you are more short of breath than you were a year earlier?
Do your symptoms affect your sleep or work performance?
Do you have any other medical conditions?
What drugs and supplements do you take regularly?
Are you exposed to lung irritants at your job?
Do you smoke? If so, how much and for how long?
      Have you inhaled illicit drugs?
How much has your stamina decreased in the last year?
Do you exercise? Can you climb one flight of stairs without difficulty? Can you walk as fast as you used to?
Does anything improve or worsen your symptoms?
      Does cold air bother you?
Do you notice that you wheeze sometimes?
Have you received the annual flu shot?
Have you ever been vaccinated against pneumonia? If so, when?

    DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

If you have ever seen another health care provider for your cough, let your present health practitionerr know what tests were done, and if possible, bring the reports with you, including results of a chest X-ray, sputum culture and pulmonary function test. During the first few days of illness, it can be difficult to distinguish the signs and symptoms of bronchitis from those of a common cold. During the physical exam, your health practitioner will use a stethoscope to listen closely to your lungs as you breathe. These are some diagnostic tests that may be done to assist with diagnosis:
    • Chest X-ray: A chest X-ray can help determine if you have pneumonia or another condition that may explain your cough. This is especially important if you ever were or currently are a smoker.

    • Sputum Tests: Sputum is the mucus that you cough up from your lungs. It can be tested to see if you have whooping cough (pertussis) or other illnesses that could be helped by antibiotics. Sputum can also be tested for signs of allergies.

    • Bronchoscopy: For people who are unable to cough up sputum, bronchoscopy may be recommended. This is a procedure in which a flexible tube is inserted to examine the bronchial tree. It can be done simply for the sake of a visual examination, to suction out congestions, to remove foreign bodies, or even to biopsy (sample) tissue from the bronchial tubes for the purpose of identifying the infecting organism.

    • Pulmonary Function Test: During a pulmonary function test, you blow into a device called a spirometer, which measures how much air your lungs can hold and how quickly you can get air out of your lungs. This test checks for signs of asthma or emphysema.
    MEDICATIONS

Most cases of acute bronchitis resolves without medical treatment in two weeks. In some circumstances, you may be prescribed medications.\

  • Antibiotics: Bronchitis usually results from a viral infection, so antibiotics are not effective. However, If bacteria are the cause of acute bronchitis, treatment with antibiotics may be necessary to cure the infection and to prevent pneumonia from developing. If you are taking antibiotics, be sure to follow instructions carefully and take the full prescriptive dose, even after you begin to feel better. You may need to take Acidophilus supplements and/or eat yogurt with active cultures when antibiotics have been used to replace and maintain a healthy flora in your digestive system.

  • In recent years a new type of bronchitis, probably viral in origin, has afflicted many women. It is very difficult to treat, and often lasts three weeks to five months. Antibiotics, especially doxycycline hyclate (Doryx, Vibramycin), sometimes help, although it is believed that the herb Goldenseal works as well or better.

  • Cough Medication: It is best not to suppress a cough that brings up mucus, because coughing helps remove irritants from your lungs and air passages. If your cough keeps you from sleeping, or the coughing has become painful (ribcage pain), you may try a cough suppressant at bedtime.

  • If you have allergies, asthma, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), your health practitioner may recommend an inhaler and other medications to reduce inflammation and open narrowed passages inyour lungs. It is not unusual for persons with chronic respiratory disorders to be taking a variety of medications - inhalers, anti-anxiety medications, even diuretics - to help them breathe.

  • A common treatment for bronchitis is a bronchodilator. If you use a bronchodilator, do not inhale more than the prescribed dose, as larger doses may cause side effects, including nervousness, restlessness, and trembling. Before using an inhaler, discuss with your health care provider the possible side effects and warning signs of dangerous reactions, plus any personal health concerns you have, such as possible pregnancy; a medical problem such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, or a seizure disorder; a history of drug use or adverse reactions to drugs; and current use of other over-the-counter or prescription drugs.

  • To prevent chronic lung disease in infants, health care providers often prescribe the steroid dexamethasone to reduce inflammation. Caution: A long-term study found that this common steroid treatment for premature babies can damage their brains and stunt their growth.

  • SELF CARE MEASURES

  • Air Purifier: The personal air purifier from Wein Products is a small unit worn around the neck. It sets up an invisible air shield against microorganisms (such as dust, pollen, and pollutants) in the air. It also eliminates vapors, smells, and harmful volatile compounds in the air. Other brands of personal and room Air Purifiers are available for home and office use.

  • Humidifier: Warm, moist air helps relieve coughs and loosens mucus in your airways. Be sure to clean the humidifer according to the manufacturers recommendations to avoid the growth of bacteria and fungi in the water container.

  • Face Mask: Consider wearing a face mask outside. If cold are aggravates your cough and causes shortness of breath, but on a cold air face mask before you go outside. If you do not have a face mask, a scarf can be wrapped around your face covering your nose and mouth while outdoors. This will help to keep irritating cold air out of your lungs by warming up the air you breathe through the scarf. A knit or natural fiber scarf if best.

  • Avoid Lung Irritants: Do not smoke. Wear a mask when the air is polluted or if you are exposed to irritants, such as paint or household cleaners with strong fumes.

  • ACTIVITY RECOMMENDATIONS & RESTRICTIONS

  • If you have chronic bronchitis, you may benefit from pulmonary rehabilitation - a breathing exercise program in which a respirtory therapist teaches you how to breathe more easily and increase your ability to exercise.

  • If you are hospitalized, at first you will need to rest in bed, with a few pillows to keep you sitting up a little. This will help your breathing. Do not lie flat. You may also need oxygen at this time. It is administered either by a mask or nasal prongs. Blood will be drawn to test for oxygen content.
  • Exercise is important; it helps one to breathe more efficiently and to tolerate daily activities.

  • PROGNOSIS - EXPECTED OUTCOME

  • If bronchitis does not clear up in a reasonable amount of time, a chest x-ray may be recommended to rule out lung cancer, tuberculosis, or other conditions that can cause similar symptoms.

  • Most cases of acute bronchitis are self-limiting, with full recovery in a matter of weeks. In some cases, however the condition can lead to pneumonia. This is more likely to occur in persons who also have a chronic respiratory disease or other debilitating health problem.

    POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS

Although a single episode of bronchitis usually is not cause for concern, it can lead to pneumonia in some people. Repeated bouts of bronchitis may indicate that you are developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

  • Acute bronchitis can become chronic bronchitis.
  • Pneumonia.
  • Heart disease.
  • Pulmonary hypertension.
  • Death.

  • Take Care! - Never use salves containing menthol or oil mixtures, such as Tiger Balm, Vicks VapoRub, Ben Gay, on children who are under 1 year of age. Menthol is too strong for a child's body and can even cause respiratory spasms. There is no such risk for adults.

    HOLISTIC HOME TREATMENT OF BRONCHITIS

    BRONCHITIS THERAPY

Not only does naturopathic medicine offer numerous techniques for treating the body's reaction to substances causing chronic bronchitis, it also has been successful in treating acute bronchitis.

  • You can use inhalations and liniments containing essential oils to reduce the urge to cough, and drink cough-remedy teas to dissolve the mucus. Chest compresses and appropriate homeopathic agents can also be helpful.

  • Plenty of clear fluids, rest, and a modified diet can help your body to fight the infection. Fluids not only keep the body hydrated (important if a fever is present), but also helps to keep the mucus looser and easier to get rid of while coughing. Do not swallow the mucus. Diet, nutrition, and environment all play important roles in any respiratory disease. A healthy household environment can make respiratory problems easier to control. Scientists have found many nutrients that make the bronchiole and lungs stronger and, therefore, better able to fight off infections. Many of these nutrients also make the lungs less sensitive to the air particles that can sometimes trigger bronchitis.

  • Do not smoke, and avoid secondhand smoke. Perhaps the most important thing you can do is to avoid cigarette smoke (and any other noxious inhalants), as it irritates the bronchial tubes. Cigarette smoke is very harmful. If you have chronic bronchitis, little improvement can be expected unless the irritating substances that cause the mucus to clog the air passages are eliminated.

  • It is not correct to assume that chronic bronchitis is a smoking-based disorder as commonly believed. Helicobacter pylori is an infection associated with chronic bronchitis.

  • To relieve chronic bronchitis, bring moisture into the dry indoors. Add moisture into the air. Use a humidifier, a vaporizer or even a plain container of water such as water in a clay container, although not as effective, can placed on a radiator. For acute bronchitis, get relief by hanging wet cloths in the bedroom at night. During warmer months, you can open the windows. Clean the equipment frequently to prevent the growth of bacteria.

  • Rest in bed in the early stage, when fever is present. Use pillows to support your back and head to make breathing easier. Once fever subsides and you are feeling better, alternate periods of rest with periods of moderate activity to prevent secretions from settling in the lungs.

  • Apply warm, moist heat, or a hot water bottle over the chest and back before bedtime to aid in sleeping and reduce inflammation. It is good to rub Eucalyptus Oil on your chest first.

  • To aid recovery, blow up a balloon a few times daily. One research study showed that after eight weeks of the therapy, people with bronchitis were much less breathless.

  • Supplement your diet with Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids to help with immune system support.

  • If persistent and/or severe coughing, difficulty breathing, high fever, lethargy, weakness, wheezing sounds, and/or chest pains develop, consult with your health care provider. These may be signs of developing pneumonia.

    DIET & NUTRITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS

    REVIEW YOUR DIET

  • Allow the body to rest. In order to fight bronchitis, your body needs to be rested. Eliminate solid food for 1 or 2 days so your body can focus on fighting the infection instead of digestion.

  • Drink plenty of fluids. Pure water is a plus. A clear liquid diet of herbal teas and broth-based soups are beneficial. Grandma's Chicken Soup (with or without the chicken) can be made from soup stock with plenty of garlic, onions, cayenne pepper, and other nutrient-rich vegetables can be helpful.

  • Avoid mucus-forming foods such as dairy products, processed foods, sugar, sweet fruits, and white flour; also avoid gas-producing foods such as beans, cabbage, cauliflower, and soon. A vegetarian diet is best. One epidemiological study showed the more vegetables eaten the less bronchitis.

  • Include Garlic and Onions in your diet. These foods contain Quercetin and Mustard oils, which have been shown to inhibit lipoxygenase, an enzyme that aids in releasing an inflammatory chemical in the body. Garlic is also a natural antibiotic.

  • NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

Unless otherwise specified, the following recommended doses are for adults over the age of 18. For children between the ages of 12 and 17, reduce the dose to 3/4 the recommended amount. For children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old, reduce the dose to 1/2 the recommended amount. For children under 6 years old, use 1/4 the recommended amount.

  • Lung Formula products are excellent herbal formulas used to relieves congestion, coughing, and irritation.

  • Clear Lungs from RidgeCrest Herbals is a Chinese herbal formula that helps provide relief from shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, and wheezing due to bronchial congestion. It is available in two formulas: one with ephedra and the other without. Both have been found to be equally effective. Take 2 capsules 3 times daily.

  • Expectorant herbs such as Cayenne, Elecampane, Horehound, Hyssop, and Mullein have been effective in clearing congestion.

  • Coltsfoot, Slippery Elm Bark, and Wild Cherry Bark soothe the throat and are good for a cough.

  • Cordyceps is an herb used in Chinese medicine to restore the yin and yang connection between the lungs and the kidneys. The medicinal mushroom, cordyceps sinensis, is valued for its ability to promote longevity, energy and benefit several body systems including the circulatory, immune, respiratory and glandular systems. It is said to contain inhibitor substances that attack damaged lung cells and may slow down the degeneration of the lung. Bai Qian (Cyananchum stautoni), another Chinese herb, aids in coughing up the sputum obstructing the bronchial passageways.

  • Echinacea, Licorice, and Siberian Eleuthero Ginseng are good for building up the immune system. Caution: Of overused, Licorice can elevate blood pressure. Do not use Siberian ginseng is you have hypoglycemia, high blood pressure, or a heart disorder.

  • Echinacea and Goldenseal extract helps fight viruses and bacteria and boost the immune system. At the first sign of illness, put 1/2 dropperful in your mouth. Hold it there for 10 minutes, then swallow. Do this every 3 hours until symptoms are relieved (but not for longer than one week at a time). Be sure to use alcohol-free extracts.

  • Ephedra (Ma Huang) is good for relieving nasal and chest congestion, as well as bronchial spasms. Caution: Do not use this her if you suffer from anxiety, glaucoma, heart disease, high blood pressure, or insomnia, or if you are taking a monoamine-oxidase (MAO) inhibitor drug for depression.

  • inhalation blend for bronchitis
For Inhalation: Combine equal parts of Fir Needle Essential Oil, Pine Needle Essential Oil, Sage Essential Oil and Peppermint Essential Oil. Add 3 to 5 drops of the blend to a glass or stainless-steel bowel of hot water. Lean over the bowl with a towel over your head, making a sort of tent, and inhale. Don't breathe too deeply at first; the scent is stronger than you may imagine. When you are finished, place the bowl near your bed to allow the vapors to continue helping you through the night.

  • Inhaling the vapors of Eucalyptus leaves helps to relieve respiratory problems. To use Eucalyptus as a steam inhaler, boil a quart of water, remove the boiling water from the stove, and add 6 to 8 drops of eucalyptus extract or Eucalyptus Essential Oil. Place a towel over your head and breathe in deeply through the nose, holding your breath in as long as is comfortable.

  • A massage with Lavender Essential Oil is good for bronchitis. Also, to relieve congestions, put 4 drops of Lavender Oil, alone or combined with Eucalyptus Essential Oil and Lemon Essential Oil in a pot of steaming water. Hold your head, covered with a towel, over the steaming pot and inhale the vapors. Caution: Lavender Oil is not to be taken internally.

  • Radish Juice: Cut black radish into thin slices, mix with 2 to 3 tablespoons of Honey and allow to stand for about 4 hours. This will produce a juice, 1 tablespoon of which should be taken 4 to 5 times daily. The mustard glycosides contained in the radish will kill germs.

  • Use a Mustard plaster. Combine 1/3 pound of freshly ground mustard seed with warm water to form a paste. Place a thin wool cloth on the chest, brush the paste onto the cloth and wrap in a towel. Remove in 10 to 15 minutes. The paste promotes circulation in the chest and reduces throat irritation and the urge to cough. Caution: This remedy may cause skin irritation in some sensitive individuals.

  • MoonDragon's Health Therapy: Herbal Poultices, Wraps & Compresses

  • Wear a Horseradish necklace. Cut fresh horseradish into pieces, thread it onto a string and wear it as a necklace overnight. While sleeping, you will breathe in the strong essential oils of the horseradish, which include mustard oil.

  • Onion syrup prepared by cooking 1 pound of chopped onions with 2 cups of Honey until it forms a thick syrup. Take up to 1 tablespoon every hour.

  • Do not use a commercial cough suppressant if you have bronchitis. They often contain ingredients you do not need or want to use. Coughing is essential for eliminating mucous secretions. Instead, use a herbal expectorant (teas, extracts and syrups) that will break up the mucus.

  • HERBAL COUGH REMEDY TEA

Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 2 teaspoons of the following herbal mixture and steep for 15 minutes:
Drink 3 to 4 cups daily. Sweeten with Honey if desired. This herbal tea dissolves mucus and relieves the urge to cough.

  • Fenugreek is good for reducing the flow of mucus.

  • Ginkgo Biloba leaf is a free-radical fighter that is especially good for lungs.

  • Gumplant (Grindelia Squarrosa) is an expectorant and antispasmodic.

  • Goldenseal has antibiotic properties and is good for all conditions involving inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes, throat, nasal passages, and sinuses. In addition to taking goldenseal orally, you can place a cloth soaked with a strong goldenseal tea under a hot water bottle. Place 3 wet goldenseal tea bags on each lung under the soaked cloth. Caution: Do not take goldenseal on a daily basis for more than one week at a time, and do not use it during pregnancy. If you have a history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or glaucoma, use it only under a health care provider's supervision.

  • Horsetail, taken in extract form, is a good source of silica, which has anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties and also reduces coughing.

  • Iceland Moss is good for mucous congestion.

  • American Ginseng and Siberian Eleuthero Ginseng are especially good for the lungs. They clear bronchial passages and reduce inflammation. Caution: Do not use American Ginseng if you have high blood pressure. Do not use Siberian Eleuthero Ginseng if you have hypoglycemia, high blood pressure, or a heart disorder.

  • Lobelia may be rubbed directly on the chest to aid in breathing. It can also be used as an expectorant. Caution: Use with caution, as too much may induce vomiting, and do not take lobelia on an ongoing basis.

  • Lomatium (Lomatium dissectum) has been used by Native Americans to treat bronchitis. Lomatium acts in reducing mucus in the lungs and has an antibacterial effect.

  • Lungwort leaves are rich in vitamin C and quercetin and make an effective treatment for coughs and mucus.

  • Thyme strengthens the lung tissue. It can be used for children with lung ailments.

  • EFA - Omega-3 Fatty Acids are clearly associated with a reduction in chronic bronchitis.

  • HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES

  • Aconitum 6X may be used for a dry acute cough with fever.
  • For a wrenching, dry cough try Byronia 6X to help your breathing.
  • When age-related cough is worse at night, Hyoscyamus 4X may help.
  • Try Stannum metallicum 12X for a rattling cough with expectoration.

  • NOTIFY YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER

  • If you or a family member has symptoms of bronchitis.

  • If persistent and/or severe coughing lasts more than three weeks, prevents you from sleeping, is accompanied by a high fever greater than 100.4°F, produces discolored mucus or blood and is associated with wheezing sounds, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, and/or chest pain develops, with weakness and lethargy, consultation with your health care provider is necessary.
