DESCRIPTION
Bed-wetting, also known in the medical community as enuresis or sleep-wetting, is the act of urinating in bed habitually and, especially, involuntarily at night when sleeping. Bed-wetting is common in early childhood. It also occurs sometimes, but uncommonly, in early adulthood and frequently among the aging and elderly.
SYMPTOMS
Involuntary, habitual release of urine while asleep in bed.
Sometimes the person will have a realistic dream that he or she is in the bathroom urinating - only to wake up later and discover they are all wet.
Many who have bed-wetting problems are deep sleepers as well. They have problems with waking up to be able to go to the bathroom.
Some may only occasionally have bed-wetting occurrences, while others may have them once or more often a night.
If bed wetting is caused by a urinary tract infection, symptoms may include signs of UTI.
CAUSES
The causes are often unknown. It is wise to rule out the possibility of underlying medical problems before proceeding to any other forms of treatment.
Behavior disturbances.
Very sound sleeping.
Consumption of too much liquid before bedtime.
Dreaming about using the rest room (bathroom).
Food allergies.
Heredity. Many bed-wetters have had other family members that have experienced this problem.
Stress.
Nutritional deficiencies.
Psychological problems (one of the most common factors in young adults).
In children under 5 years of age or so, the most common cause is simply the size of the bladder. It is often too small to hold enough urine to last through the night every single night. This type of bed-wetting is usually outgrown. Occasional bed-wetting by older children usually stops spontaneously by the teenage years.
An underlying illness such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or diabetes may also result in bed-wetting.
TREATMENT
HOLISTIC RECOMMENDATIONS
Consume more foods that are high in vitamin B-2 (riboflavin) and pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5), including bee pollen, brewer's yeast, soaked nuts, spirulina, and all kinds of sprouts. Caution: Both bee pollen and brewer's yeast can cause an allergic reaction in some sensitive individuals. Start with a small amount at first, and discontinue use if any allergic symptoms occur.

Do not drink liquids within 30 minutes of bedtime.
See your health care provider for food allergy testing. Bed-wetting is often caused by food allergies. Omit cow's milk, which is highly allergenic, from your diet. Also eliminate from the diet carbonated beverages, chocolate, cocoa, cooked spinach, refined carbohydrates (including junk food), rhubarb, and products containing caffeine or food coloring.
Bed-wetting in children has been shown to cause low self-esteem, attention deficit, or behavioral problems and is best treated with sympathy and understanding. Do not spank or scold a child for bed-wetting. This only complicates the problem. Instead, give rewards for not wetting the bed.
CONSIDERATIONS
Several cases of bed-wetting (among children and adults) were relieved in a matter of days when supplements of certain nutrients were supplied. Among these were magnesium, vitamin B-2, and pantothenic acid. In addition, all allergy-causing foods were removed from the diet, and a protein supplement was added. Spirulina, brewer's yeast, and bee pollen are all excellent sources of protein. Again, some people are unable to use bee pollen or brewer's yeast because of allergic reactions to these products.
Supplemental magnesium is especially helpful for certain people. Magnesium citrate is one of the better forms to use, since the body can readily assimilate it.

Behavior modification techniques have proved useful in some cases, especially with children. One technique involves the use of an alarm that goes off as soon as the individual starts to wet the bed. Over time, this is believed to help a child respond to the body's cues and wake up when he or she needs to urinate during the night.
