HERBS
Chamomile has a calming effect on smooth muscle tissue. 1 to 3 cups of tea, 10 to 20 drops of Chamomile Extract in a cup of liquid, or 1 to 3 capsules daily. If you have allergies to ragweed, do not use chamomile.
Bromelain (found in fresh pineapple) can be used as a powerful anti-inflammatory. Take 2 to 3 grams of bromelain to start with and then 1 to 2 grams as the pain eases. Other anti-inflammatories are Valerian, St. John's Wort, and Jamaican Dogwood. Drink as teas.
St John's Wort is used for muscle spasm. Use 15-25 drops of tincture in a glass of water every 2 hours as needed. For severe pain, add 3-5 drops of Skullcap tincture.
Horsetail is a good source of silica, which is necessary for bones and connective tissue. It also normalizes the bowels and alleviates lower back pain, which can be traced to a dysfunctional intestinal tract. Take internally 1 to 3 cups of tea or 10 to 20 drops of horsetail extract daily.
Arth-X from Trace Minerals Research is a formula containing herbs, sea minerals, calcium, and other nutrients for the bones and joints.
Burdock soothes back pain and purifies the blood. Take 1 to 3 capsules or 10 to 25 drops of extract in 1 cup of fluid daily.
If emotional stress is producing muscle tension, take Borage, St. John's Wort, Lemon Balm or Valerian teas.
Fresh Yarrow juice is excellent for strengthening back muscles.
A White or Black Mustard Seed pack can be used for more intense heat. A mustard pack should not be left on for more than 10 minutes because it can irritate the skin.

A Meadowsweet infusion combined with Lobelia and Cramp Bark can be used as a rub on the sore area. It is useful for physical strain or rheumatic problems.
Other herbs recommended for backache include Alfalfa, Oat Straw, and Slippery Elm. They can be taken in capsule form, extract, or tea.
Cayenne Pepper (capsicum spp.) is used in formulas for liniments and plasters. Red pepper contains capsaicin, which is a pain-relieving chemical that is so potent that a tiny amount provides the active ingredient in some powerful pharmaceutical topical analgesics. One commercial brand is Zostrix, which contains only 0.025% capsaicin. Capsaicin's effectiveness may be due to it's ability to interfere with our body's ability for pain perception, triggering the release of the body's own pain-relieving endorphins, and to the presence of salicylates in cayenne pepper. 1. Capsaicin can be obtained in commercial creams and used externally.
2. Another method would be to mash a red cayenne pepper and rub it directly on the painful area.
3. Take any white skin cream, such as cold cream, and mix into it enough red pepper to turn it pink.
4. Place 1 ounce of cayenne pepper in a quart of rubbing alcohol. Let the mixture stand for 3 weeks, shaking the bottle each day. Then, apply to the affected part during acute attacks.

5. Place 1 ounce of cayenne pepper in a pint of boiling water. Simmer for half an hour. Do not strain, but add a pint of rubbing alcohol. Let cool at room temperature. Apply as desired to the affected area.
Caution: Do not take any of these remedies internally. Wash your hands thoroughly after preparing or using red pepper. Do not get capsicum into your eyes. Some people are sensitive to cayenne pepper. Test it on a small area of the skin to make sure it will work okay before using it on a larger area. If it seems to irritate your skin, discontinue use.
Wheat Grass Juice contains nutrients to strengthen muscles and keep the spine flexible. Soak wheat berries overnight, drain the water, and spread the wheat one berry deep into an inch of dirt on a cookie sheet. Water several times per day, harvesting the shoots when they are several inches high. Use a wheat grass juicer or blend the shoots with water in a blender, strain and drink.
Cramp Bark (Viburnum opulus) and Black Haw (Viburnum prunifolium) is used for the treatment of spasmodic pain. It is good for both menstrual pain and muscle spasm, as well as for arthritic pain. The plants contain the antispasmodic and muscle-relaxing compounds esouletin and scopoletin. These compounds are best extracted with ethyl alcohol (such as 100 proof vodka), so use tinctures rather than teas. Black haw also contains aspirin-like compounds. Directions: Tinctures can be made by putting an ounce of the dry herb into a pint jar and fill with 100 proof vodka. Seal tightly so evaporation will not occur. Label and date. Place jars in dark place and shake jars once or twice a day for a minimum of 6 weeks. After 6 weeks the liquid can be drained off and put into brown eyedropper bottles. Mix equal parts cramp bark and black haw tinctures. Take between 1 and 4 droppers every 2-3 hours for up to 3 days.
White Willow Bark (Salix alba) contains salicin, which is a pain-relieving constituent that led to the discovery of aspirin. Other anti-inflammatory constituents also appear in white willow bark.
WILLOW BARK FOR PAIN
Willow bark contains salicylic acid, an active ingredient found in aspirin. A tea made from 1 teaspoon of White Willow Bark and 1 cup of boiling water has an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. Do not use willow bark if you have allergies to aspirin or if you are on blood thinners. Always consult with your health care provider or midwife before taking any supplement or using any herbal therapy if you are pregnant, using other medications or have allergies to certain drugs or plant groups.
Today, with the rise in popularity of natural medicine, White Willow is being used by more people as an alternative to aspirin, and it is used to treat many of the same conditions; bursitis, tendonitis, headaches, osteosarthritis, dysmenorrhea, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is also used for back pain, toothache, and menstrual cramps. White Willow also works well in soothing a sore throat and reducing the fever and headache associated with upper respiratory tract infections and influenza, and it is easier on the stomach than aspirin.
White Willow comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. To make a tea, take 1 to 2 g of White Willow bark per one cup of water. Drink 1 cup three times a day. Tinctures and dry extracts are also available and should be taken in a dose that provides 120 to 240 mg of salicin a day. For other formulations read and follow product label directions.
White Willow, if taken over a long period of time, can cause stomach irritation and even bleeding ulcers. Do not give to children due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome. Also, people with aspirin allergies, bleeding disorders, ulcers, kidney disease, liver disease, or diabetes should refrain from using this herb. It is possible that White Willow will interact adversely with alcohol, blood thinners, other anti-inflammatories, methotrexate, metoclopramide, phenytoin, probenecid, spironolactone, and valproate. Safety in pregnant or nursing women is unknown.

Directions: Cut a fresh ginger root, the size of your thumb) into thin slices. Place the slices in a quart of water. Bring to a boil, and then simmer on the lowest possible heat for 30 minutes in a covered pot. Let cool for 30 or more minutes. Strain and drink 1/2 to 1 cup, sweetened with honey, for taste if needed.
Rosemary tea is used for pain in the southwest U.S. and Mexico. The leaves contain 4 anti-inflammatory substances (camosol, oleanolic acid, rosmarinic acid, and ursolic acid). Carnosol acts like both steroids and aspirin. Rosmarinic acid acts through at least 2 separate anti-inflammatory pathways. Ursolic acid makes up about 4% of the plant by weight and has anti-arthritic effects. Directions: Put 1/2 ounce of Rosemary Leaves in a quart canning jar and fill the jar with boiling water. Cover tightly and let it stand for 30 minutes. Drink a cup as hot as possible before going to bed, and have another cupful in the morning before breakfast.
Nettle infusion is great for toning the kidneys (another potential source of back pain).
Comfrey infusion provides vitamins and minerals to prevent backache.
Epsom Salt Baths can be used to relieve pain. Epsom salt is primarily magnesium sulfate. The heat of the Epsom salt bath can increase circulation and reduce the swelling of arthritis, and the magnesium can be absorbed through the skin. Magnesium is one of the most important minerals of the body, participating in at least 300 enzyme systems. Magnesium has both anti-inflammatory and anti=arthritic properties. Directions: Fill a bathtub with water as hot as can be tolerated. Add 2 cups of Epsom salts. Bathe for 30 minutes, adding hot water as needed to keep the bath water warm.
Angelica species has been used for pain relief by native Americans. The species, Angelica Archangelica, has been used in Europe and Angelica sinensis has been used in China. The Chinese species is sometimes known as Dang Qui or Dong Quai. All of these species contain anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and anodyne (pain relieving) properties. Directions: Place 1 tablespoon of the cut roots of either species of angelica in a pint of water and bring it to a boil for 2 minutes in a covered pot. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, until the tea cools to room temperature. Drink the pint in 3 doses during the day.

AN EXCELLENT BACK STRETCH
The Cat Stretch is one of the most effective exercises you can do to keep your back flexible. Kneel on all fours with your hands shoulder-width apart. Slowly arch your back, placing your chin on your chest (see above). You should feel a gentle stretch in your back muscles; stop if you feel any pain. Hold for 5 seconds. Next, raise your head and press your stomach down toward the floor, making the small of your back concave. Hold for 5 seconds. Repeat the sequence. Perform this exercise for 5 minutes each day.
IMPROVING YOUR BACK
- BACK SCHOOL - If you have chronic back problems, ask your health care provider to refer you to a physical therapist or a back school. These specialized programs, often organized by health insurance companies, teach simple strengthening and stretching exercises that everyone can perform to counteract the unilateral stress on the spine. They also often provide additional information on an overall fitness program to complement the back exercises.
- SWIMMING - Swimming is probably the best form of exercise for people who suffer from back pain. The water supports your weight, so you do not put stress on your muscles, In addition, this activity uses muscles in the back, abdomen, arms and legs, thus providing overall conditioning. However, avoid the breast stroke and the butterfly, which require arching your back.
- DRY SWIMMING - If you can't get to a pool, resort to "dry swimming." Lie down on your back on a towel or exercise mat. Alternately raise your left arm and your right leg, making swimming movements for 2 seconds. Rest for the same length of time and repeat the same movement with your right arm and left leg. Perform this exercise for up to 10 minutes a day.
When sitting, try to keep your knees a little higher than your hips and keep your feet flat on the floor. Placing your feet on a pillow or other support to hold this position might be helpful.
When carrying things on your shoulder, switch the weight to the other side from time to time. Carrying heavy shoulder bags may produce neck, back, and shoulder pain.
Learn to recognize and reduce stress. Relaxation techniques can be very helpful.

Always push large objects; never pull them.
Wear comfortable, well-made shoes. The higher the heels of your shoes, the greater the risk of backache.
Move around. Do not sit in the same position for long periods of time.
Never lean forward without bending your knees. Lift with your legs, arms, and abdomen - not with the muscles of the small of your back. Avoid lifting anything heavier than 20 pounds. If you must work close to the ground, squat down so that you avoid bending at the waist.
Do not sleep on your stomach with your head raised on a pillow. Instead, rest your back by lying on your side with your legs bent, so that your knees are about an inch higher than your hips. Sleep on a firm mattress with your head supported on a pillow. If your mattress is not firm enough, try placing a board between the box spring and the mattress.
Maintain a healthy weight and get regular moderate exercise. A lack of exercise can cause back pain. Activities that are good for the back include swimming, cycling, walking, and rowing. Avoid the following activities:
- Baseball, basketball, football. The quick responses needed for these sports involve sudden twisting and jumping motions.
- Bowling. Lifting a heavy weight while bending and twisting puts strain on the back.
- Golf. The twisting motion involved in the swing, and the body's tendency to bend forward at the waist, are stressful to the lower back.
- Tennis. Playing tennis puts strain on the back due to the quick "stop-and-go" action of the game.
- Weight-lifting. This sport is potentially the most damaging because it places great strain on the lower portion of the spine and back.
If pain lasts longer than 72 hours, if the pain radiates into the legs, or if other symptoms such as unexplained weight loss occur, consult your health care provider. If your backaches are chronic, look for a health care provider who specializes in backs - one who does NOT rush to recommend surgery.
If you have pain in one side of the small of your back, feel sick, and have a fever, see your health care provider immediately. You may have a kidney infection.
If pain follows an injury and is accompanied by sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, if you have difficulty moving any limb, or if you feel numbness, pain, or tingling in a limb, do not move, but call for medical help immediately. You may have hurt your spinal cord.
Extra Tip - To keep your spine aligned when you are sleeping, lie on your side and place one pillow under your head. Bend your knees and place another pillow between them.
