  • ALKALOSIS DESCRIPTION

    AN ALKALINE BODY

Alkalosis is the inverse of acidosis. It is a condition in which the body is too alkaline. Alkalosis is less common than acidosis, and produces over excitability of the nervous system. The peripheral nerves are affected first. The peripheral nerves are affected first. The symptoms may be manifested as a highly nervous condition, including hyperventilation and even seizures. (See Symptoms below.)

    MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Acidosis

    METABOLIC ALKALOSIS

Metabolic alkalosis is due to the gain of base or the loss of acid. The primary abnormallity is an increased HCO3. It is caused from an increase in bicarbonate in the blood because of ingestion of excess bicarbonate in the form of an antacid, eating excess fruits (vegetarian diets and fat diets), loss of acid from vomiting, or loss of potassium from diuretics.

    metabolic alkalosis

    RESPIRATORY ALKALOSIS

Deep and rapid respirations (tachypnea) will cause increased loss of carbon dioxide and will cause respiratory alkalosis.

    respiratory alkalosis

    ALKALOSIS FREQUENT SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

    COMMON SYMPTOMS

  • Hyper ventilation.
  • Seizures.
  • Sore muscles.
  • Creaking joints.
  • Bursitis.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Protruding eyes.
  • Hypertension.
  • Hypothermia.
  • Edema.
  • Allergies.
  • Night cramps.
  • Asthma.
  • Chronic indigestion.
  • Night coughs.
  • Vomiting.
  • Too-rapid blood clotting and thick blood.
  • Menstrual problems.

  • Thickening of the skin, with burning, itching sensations.
  • Calcium buildup in the body as in bone or heel spurs.

  • ALKALOSIS CAUSES

    THE POTENTIAL OF HYDROGEN

Acidity and alkalinity are measured according to the pH (potential of hydrogen) scale. Water, with a pH of 7.0 is considered neutral - neither acidic or alkaline. Anything with a pH below 7.0 is acid, while anything with a pH above 7.0 is alkaline. The ideal pH range for the human body is between 6.0 and 6.8 (the human body is naturally mildly acidic). Values below pH 6.3 are considered on the acidic side; values above pH 6.8 are on the alkaline side.

Alkalosis is often the result of excessive intake of alkaline drugs, such as sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) for the treatment of gastritis or peptic ulcers. It can also result from excessive vomiting, high cholesterol, endocrine imbalance, poor diet, diarrhea, and osteoarthritis.

    ALKALOSIS DIAGNOSIS

    ACID & ALKALINE SELF TESTS

  • This test will determine whether your body fluids are either too acidic or too alkaline. An imbalance can cause illnesses such as acidosis or alkalosis.

  • Purchase pH (litmus) paper, available at any drugstore, and apply saliva and/or urine to the paper. The paper will change color to indicate if your system is overly acidic or alkaline. Red litmus paper turns blue in an alkaline medium and blue litmus paper turns red in an acidic medium. Always perform the test either before eating or at least 1 hour after eating. Multi-test chem strips can also be purchased that not only can give a pH range, but also tests for glucose, ketones, protein, and several other urine components.

Depending upon the results of your test, you should alter your diet to help bring your body back into the normal range. If your test indicates that your body is too acidic, eat more alkaline-forming foods and omit acid-forming foods from your diet until another pH test shows that you have returned to normal. On the other hand, if your body is too alkaline, eat more acid-forming foods and omit alkaline-forming foods. Use the list below as a guide to which foods are acid-forming and which are alkaline-forming. Low level acid-forming and low-level alkaline-forming foods are almost neutral.

    ketone urine dip sticks

    TEST YOUR URINE YOURSELF

You can purchase test strips in a pharmacy or medical supply store to check your urinary level for pH, glucose, ketones, protein and other components.
    • Collect midstream morning urine.
    • Dip the test strip in the urine and leave it there for approximately 1 minute (follow direction label on the test strip box or bottle).
    • Wipe off the excess on the side of the container. After 1 to 2 minutes, a change in color on the strip indicates diagnostic levels for that particular test being checked, including pH. If abnormal levels are indicated, you should consult with your health care provider.

ACID- ALKALINE LITMUS PH TESTING PRODUCTS

Litmus paper may also be called nitrazine paper. It can be purchased at most local pharmacies. If your local pharmacy does not carry it or urine test strips for pH, check with a medical supply company usually listed under Medical Equipment, Supplies and Repair in the yellow pages or a hospital pharmacy. ALKALOSIS TREATMENT

    ACID & ALKALINE FORMING FOODS

A basic rule of thumb to follow to restore health, achieve and maintain pH balance is to eat 80 percent alkaline-forming foods and drinks and 20 percent acid-forming foods and drinks each day. To maintain health, the diet should consist of 60 percent alkaline forming foods and 40 percent acid forming foods.

If a pH test indicates that your body is too acidic, you should eat more alkaline-forming foods and omit acid-forming foods from your diet until another pH test shows you have returned to normal. Conversely, if your body is too alkaline, eat more acid-forming foods and omit alkaline-forming foods. Use the list below as a guide to which foods are acid-forming and which are alkaline-forming. Low-level acid-forming and low-level alkaline-forming foods are almost neutral.

    Acid-Forming Foods

    Alcohol
    Asparagus
    Beans
    Brussels Sprouts
    Catsup
    Chickpeas
    Cocoa
    Coffee
    Cornstarch
    Cranberries
    Eggs
    Fish
    Flour; flour based products
    Legumes
    Lentils
    Meat
    Milk

    Mustard
    Noodles
    Oatmeal
    Olives
    Organ Meats
    Pasta
    Pepper
    Plums
    Poultry
    Prunes
    Sauerkraut
    Shellfish
    Soft drinks
Sugar; all foods with sugar added
    Tea
    Vinegar

Aspirin, tobacco, and most drugs are also acid forming.

    Low-Level Acid-Forming Foods

    Butter
    Canned or glazed fruit
    Cheeses
    Dried coconut
    Dried or sulfured Fruit (most)

    Grains (most)
    Ice Cream

    Seeds & nuts (most)

    Alkaline-Forming Foods

    Avocados
    Corn

    Fresh Coconut
    Fresh Fruits (most)
    Fresh Vegetables (most)

    Honey

    Almonds
    Blackstrap Molasses
    Brazil Nuts
    Buckwheat

    Chestnuts
    Lima Beans
    Millet
    Soured Dairy Products

NOTE: All vegetables, especially raw vegetables, balance the acidity and alkali levels in the blood. Although it might seem that citrus fruit would have an acidifying effect on the body, the citric acid they contain actually has an alkalinizing effect in the system.

    TREATMENT CONSIDERATIONS

Your breathing can affect the acid-alkaline balance of your body. Prolonged hyperventilation may cause temporary alkalosis, resulting in anxiety and a feeling that one cannot get enough air, despite the fact that breathing itself is not actually restricted in any way. If this happens, breathe into a paper bag and re-breathe the air from the bag. This often helps to correct the chemical imbalance.

    BENEFICIAL HERBS

    ALFALFA & ALFALFA SPROUTS

Alfalfa is beneficial for the digestive tract. It is a good source of vitamin K and other nutrients. Use Alfalfa supplements plus natural sources, such as alfalfa sprouts.

Alfalfa can help lower cholesterol, balance hormones, and promote pituitary gland function. Alfalfa alkalizes and detoxifies the body, acts as a diuretic, anti-inflammatory and contains an anti-fungal agent. Alfalfa is also good for treating anemia, bone and joint disorders, colon and digestive disorders, skin disorders and ulcers. Alfalfa has shown to be beneficial in preventing endometrial and colon cancer. It has been said that it helps reduce the effects of rheumatoid arthritis and other arthritic conditions. Taking Alfalfa tablets before meals will help prevent the absorption of cholesterol. There is some evidence to suggest that Alfalfa tea can be useful in treating diabetes, stimulating appetite and for use as a general tonic. This plant works well as a food for convalescents because it gives many nutrients their body needs to heal and become strong. Alfalfa has shown some estrogenic activity and could be useful in treating problems with menstruation and menopause.

Alfalfa supplements come in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. Powdered Alfalfa contains vitamins A, B-1, B-6, B-12, C, E, & K-1, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, folic acid and many essential and nonessential amino acids. The powdered form also contains high amounts of calcium, phosphorus, manganese, iron, zinc, and copper. The recommended dose is 500 to 1,000 mg of the dried leaf per day or 1 to 2 ml of tincture. For tablets or capsules it is best to read and follow product label directions. Here are a couple of examples of some dosages:

The recommended dose is 500 to 1,000 mg of the dried leaf per day or 1-2ml of tincture.
Alfalfa for tea - 1 to 2 teaspoons per cup, steeped in boiling water for 10 to 20 minutes.
Fluid extract, 30 to 60 ml per week.

  • Nutrition Basics: Alfalfa Herbal Products

  • TREATMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Eat a diet of 80 percent grains and including beans, breads, brown rice, crackers, lentils, macaroni, nuts, soy sauce, and whole-grain cereals. The other 20 percent of the diet should include fresh fruits and vegetables and fish, chicken, eggs and natural cheese.
  • Do not use antacids or mineral supplements, except those mentioned above, for 2 weeks.
  • Avoid sodium.
  • Cut back on megadoses of vitamins and minerals for 2 weeks.
  • Check your urine pH daily using nitrazine (litmus) paper. See above for testing procedure and list of alkaline-forming foods to avoid until your pH is corrected.

  • Betaine Hydrochloride (HCl)
As directed on label. A digestive enzyme that releases acid in the digestive tract.

HCL and Pepsin tablets are enzymatic aids for the stomach when greater stomach acidity is desired. The main ingredient is Betaine Hydrochloride which supplies Hydrochloric Acid. Pepsin is included to split protein into peptides and polypeptides. A Pepsin deficiency is generally associated with a deficiency of Hydrochloric Acid in the stomach. Betaine Hydrochloride naturally is derived from beets and supports healthy digestion, creating a favorable digestive environment in the stomach by providing a supplemental source of hydrochloride acid. If the formula contains fenugreek, this also aids digestion. Anyone taking aspirin or aspirin-containing compounds or anti-inflammatories, such as indocin, butazolidin or cortisone, should avoid Betaine HCl. The combination of Betaine HCl and these drugs could increase the risk of ulcers. Take 1 to 2 capsules at mealtime, 3 times per day or as directed by a health care provider.

  • Coenzyme A
As directed on label. Facilitates the repair of RNA and DNA. Supports the immune system's detoxification of many dangerous substances. Can streamline metabolism, ease depression and fatigue, and increase energy. Works well with CoQ10.

The nutrients supplied by Coenzyme-A product also help the cells efficiently deliver fuel from aerobic and anaerobic metabolism to the TCA cycle for energy release. Because the human body can rapidly absorb these nutrients, Coenzyme-A can be taken by an athlete shortly before a workout or sport performance to provide extra metabolic power when they need it the most.

  • Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)
As directed on label. An acid-forming mineral that helps to correct pH balance..

MSM serves as an important source of bioavailable dietary sulfur, a mineral which plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and elasticity of connective tissues. Sulfur is an important component in proteins found throughout the body such as in hair, nails, skin and tendons, Vitamin C helps support connective tissue, amino acid metabolism and hormone synthesis, and is also a key factor in the body's immune system. MSM is a naturally occurring form of organic sulfur found in protein rich foods such as eggs, fish and lean meat. Taking MSM throughout the day helps to replenish the body's supply of asimilable sulfur. MSM is a naturally occurring organic sulfur compound that makes cell walls permeable, allowing water and nutrients to freely flow into cells and wastes and toxins to properly flow out. MSM and Vitamin C are used by the body to build healthy new cells. A vital substance to the life of hair and skin. The same way that biotin is a component of the manufacturing process of hair, the sulfur found in MSM can be intrinsic to the structural development of hair, particularly because it is so well-absorbed.

ALKALOSIS - ACID-ALKALINE (BASE) DIET INFORMATION PRODUCTS

    HERBSPRO PRODUCTS

HerbsPro: Orthophosphoric Acid (OPA), Progressive Labs Inc, 2 fl. oz.
The body's ratio of calcium to phosphorus should be 2.5:1. When this ratio is too high, alkalizing tendencies are difficult to control. Phosphoric acid supplies dietary ash buffers which offset the symptoms of alkalosis. Symptoms are joint stiffness upon arising, edema, nausea, pyloric spasms, muscle cramps, bradycardia and excessive salivation. Urine chemistry may show an alkaline pH, decreased chlorides, increased sodium and potassium, high bicarbonate and little or no ammonia. O.P.A. is of value in lowering uric acid levels and as an aid in the digestion of carbohydrates. Phosphorus is needed for blood clotting, bone and tooth formation, cell growth, normal heart rhythm and kidney function.

Kalyx: Perfectly Healthy pH Plus, 120 Gelatin Caps: HF
The body's acid-alkaline balance is only one of the most important factors in fighting diseases and maintaining good health. Stress, lack of physical activity, a diet high in acidic foods and toxic environmental pollutants can all contribute to a state of acidosis and pave the way for serious health problems down the road. pH Plus is a superior product designed to regulate and maintain a proper pH balance in an effective, safe and all natural way. Proper Acid-Alkaline Balance pH indicates levels of acid in the blood. Measured on a scale of 1 to 14, a pH level of 7.43 is optimal. Levels lower than 7.0 indicate an overly acidic state (called acidosis) while levels above 7.5 indicate an overly alkaline state (called alkalosis.). Maintaining a slightly alkaline pH level of 7.43 allows the body's cells to communicate effectively, a process that is necessary to ensuring that the body continues to function properly.
