    As we get older, eating right and obtaining the benefits of healthy eating include resistance to illness and disease, higher energy levels, increased mental acuteness, better management of chronic health issues and faster recuperation times when we do become ill. It is also a factor in maintaining a positive outlook and staying emotionally balanced.

    Since we are what we eat, it is important to put quality foods into our bodies. A diet that includes a variety of colorful vegetables and fruits, along with whole grains and lean proteins will go a long way towards making you feel great inside and out. Good nutrition helps to keep the muscles, bones, organs and other body parts strong and adds endurance. Eating nutrient-rich foods boosts immunity and fights toxins that can cause illness. A proper diet reduces risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, bone loss, cancer and anemia. Eating properly also means consuming fewer calories and optimizing the ones you do take in with nutrient-rich foods, keeping weight issues in control. Nutrients are needed to sharpen the mind and are essential for the brain to do its job properly and efficiently. A selection of brightly colorful vegetables and fruits, fish and nuts that are packed with omega-3 essential fatty acids can improve memory, focus and decrease the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Wholesome and balanced meals will give your body more energy, help you to look and feel better. This helps in boosting self-esteem and when you and your body feels good, it helps you to feel happier,

    Adults as they get older can feel better and stay healthier for the future by choosing healthy foods. A balanced diet and physical activity contribute to a higher quality of life and enhanced independence as we age.


  • FRUIT - Eat whole fruits rather than juices for more Fiber and Vitamins. Aim for around 1.5 to 2 servings daily. Rather than just staying with the banana and apple, pick color-rich fruit that includes berries and melons.

  • VEGETABLES - Choose color and antioxidant rich dark leafy Greens, such as kale, spinach, and broccoli, as well as oranges and yellow, such as carrots, squash and yams. Try to eat 2 to 2.5 cups of vegetables daily.

  • CALCIUM - Aging bone health is dependent upon adequate Calcium intake to prevent osteoporosis and bone fractures. Seniors need 1,200 mg of Calcium daily through servings of milk, yogurt, and cheese. Non-dairy sources of calcium include tofu, broccoli, almonds and kale.

  • WHOLE GRAINS - Choose your carbohydrates carefully by opting for whole grains instead of over-processed white flour for more nutrients and higher Fiber count. Read labels and look for pasta, breads, and cereals that list "whole" in the ingredient list. Seniors need 6 to 7 ounces of grains daily (one ounce is about 1 slice of bread)..

  • PROTEIN - Seniors need about 0.5 grams of Protein per pound of body weight. Simply divide your bodyweight in half to know how many grams you need. a 130 pound woman will need 65 grams of Protein daily. A serving of tuna, for example, has about 40 grams of Protein. Be sure to vary your Protein sources with more fish, beans, peas, nuts, eggs, milk, cheese and seeds.


  • WATER - Water is important, especially for seniors. Seniors are prone to dehydration because our bodies lose some of its ability to regulate fluid levels and our sense of thirst is dulled as we get older. Post notes where you can be reminded to sip water every hour and with meals to avoid urinary tract infections, constipation, and possibly confusion.

  • VITAMIN B - After 50, the stomach produces less gastric acid making it difficult to absorb Vitamin B-12. Vitamin B-12 is needed to help keep blood and nerves functioning properly. Get the recommended daily intake of 2.4 mcg of Vitamin B-12 from fortified foods or a quality vitamin supplement.

  • VITAMIN D - We get most of our Vitamin D, which is essential to absorbing Calcium, through our sun exposure and certain foods such as fatty fish, egg yolk, and fortified milk. With age, our skin is less efficient at synthesizing Vitamin D. Many of us do not go out in the sun, reducing exposure time, so deficiency is common. Consult with your health care provider about vitamin supplementation of Vitamin D to correct deficiencies.


    Once you have started to follow a nutritious plan of nutrient-dense foods, your body will notice the difference. It will feel sluggish and slow if you eat less wholesome foods. To get into a healthy eating well habit, follow these tips:
    • Reduce Sodium (Salt): Reducing salt in your diet will help prevent water retention and high blood pressure. Use "low sodium" foods and seasonings and season your meals with herbs, spices and a few grains of Course Sea Salt instead of cooking with salt.

    • Eat Good Fats: Use Olive Oil, Avocado, salmon, walnuts, Flaxseed, and other monosaturated fats. The fats from these sources can protect your body from heart disease by controlling the bad LDL cholesterol levels and raising your good HDL cholesterol levels.

    • Lots of Fiber: Smoothe movement takes on a whole new meaning as we age. Avoid constipation, lower the risk of chronic diseases, and feel better, fuller longer by increasing Fiber intake. Good Fiber foods include raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains and beans.

    • Avoid Bad Carbohydrates: Bad carbohydrates, known as simple or unhealthy carbs, are foods such as white flour, refined sugar, white rice that have been stripped of all bran, fiber and nutrients. Bad carbs digest quickly and cause spikes in blood sugar levels and short-lived energy. For longer-lasting energy and stable insulin levels, choose good or complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables.

    • Read Packages & Look For Hidden Sugar: Added sugar can be hidden in foods such as bread, canned soups, canned vegetables, pasta sauce, instant mashed potates, frozen dinners, fast food, and condiments such as ketchup. Check food labels for alternate terms for sugar such as corn syrup, molasses, brown rice syrup, cane juice, fructose, sucrose, dextrose, or maltose. Choose fresh or frozen vegetables instead of canned goods, and choose low-carb or sugar-free versions of products such as tortillas, bread, pasta, and ice cream.

    • Cook Smart: Prepare vegetables by steaming or sauteing in Olive Oil since it preserves the nutrients. Cook only until done, do not overcook your foods. Forget boiling since it drains nutrients.

    • Be Colorful: Put five colors on your plate. Fruits and vegetables rich in color (blackberries, blueberries, melons, yams, spinach, tomato, zucchini) correspond to rich nutrients.


    Every stage of life brings changes and adjustments to your body. Understanding what is happening will help you take control of your nutrition requirements.



    Every year over the age of forty, our metabolism slows. This means that even if you continue to eat the same amount as when you were younger, you are likely to gain weight because you are burning fewer calories. In addition, you may be less physically active. Consult your health care provider to decide if you should cut back on calories.


    Your taste and smell senses diminish with age. Seniors tend to lose sensitivity to salty and bitter tastes first, so you may be inclined to salt your food more heavily than before - even though seniors need less salt than younger people. Use herbs and healthy oils, such as olive oil, to season food instead of salt. Similarly, seniors tend to retain the ability to distinguish sweet tastes the longest, leading some to overindulge in sugary foods and snacks. Instead of adding sugar, try increasing sweetness to meals by using naturally sweet food such as fruit, peppers, or yams.


    Prescription medications and illnesses can often negatively influence appetite and may also affect taste, again leading seniors to add too much salt or sugar to their food. Ask your health care provider about overcoming side effects of medications or specific physical conditions.


    Due to a slowing digestive system, you generate less saliva and stomach acid as you get older, making it more difficult for your body to process certain vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin B-12, Vitamin B-6 and Folic Acid, which are necessary to maintain mental alertness, a keen memory and good circulation. Up your Fiber intake and talk to your health care provider about possible supplements.



    Loneliness and depression affect your diet. For some, feeling down leads to not eating and in others it may trigger overeating. Be aware if emotional problems are affecting your diet, and take action by consulting your health care provider or therapist.


    Newly single seniors may not know how to cook or may not feel like cooking for one. People on limited budgets might have trouble affording a balanced, healthy diet. See the resources below for suggestions on cooking for one and easy, healthy menu selections.


    Malnutrition is a critical senior health issue caused by eating too little food, too few nutrients, and by digestive problems related to aging. Malnutrition causes fatigue, depression, weak immune system, anemia, weakness, digestive, lung, and heart problems, and skin concerns.

    • Eat nutrient packed food.
    • Have flavorful food available.
    • Snack between meals.
    • Eat with company as much as possible.
    • Get help with food preparation.
    • Consult your health care provider or nutritionist.

  • Avoid skipping meals. Skipping meals causes your metabolism to slow down, which leads to feeling sluggish and poorer choices later in the day.
  • Breakfast: Select high fiber breads and cereals, colorful fruit, and protein to fill you with energy for the day. Try yogurt with muesli and berries, a veggie-packed omelet, peanut-butter on whole grain toast with a citrus salad, or old-fashioned oatmeal made with dried cherries, walnuts, and honey.

  • Lunch: Keep your body fueled for the afternoon with a variety of whole-grain breads, lean protein, and fiber. Try a veggie quesadilla on a whole-wheat tortilla, veggie stew with whole-wheat noodles, or a quinoa salad with roasted peppers and mozzarella cheese.

  • Dinner: End the day on a wholesome note. Try warm salads of roasted veggies and a side of crusty brown bread and cheese, grilled salmon with spicy salsa, or whole-wheat pasta with asparagus and shrimp. Opt for sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes and grilled meat instead of fried.

  • Snacks: It is okay, even recommended, to snack. But make sure you make it count by choosing high-fiber snacks to healthfully tide you over to your next meal. Choose almonds and raisins instead of chips, and fruit instead of sweets. Other smart snacks include yogurt, cottage cheese, apples and peanut butter, and veggies and hummus.


    There tends to be several reasons why so many seniors have trouble eating a nutritious diet every day. Here are some recommendations to help seniors overcome healthy eating obstacles and give them the nutrition they need:

  • Avoid eating alone. Eating with company can be as important as vitamins. A social atmosphere stimulates the mind and helps people to enjoy their meals. This in turn will help them to eat better. If you live alone, eating with company will take some planning, but the effort is worth the rewards.
    • Make a date to share lunch or dinners with grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors on a rotating basis.
    • Join in by taking a class, volunteering, or going on an outing, all of which can lead to new friendships and dining buddies.
    • Adult day care centers provide both companionship and nutritious meals for seniors who are isolated and lonely, or unable to prepare their own meals.
    • Senior meal programs are a great way to meet others. Contact your local Senior Center, YMCA, congregation, or high school and ask about senior meal programs.
  • Loss of appetite can be a problem. You should consult with your health care provider or pharmacist to see if your loss of appetite could be due to medications you are taking and whether or not the dosage can be adjusted or changed. It may take some time to get the medications adjusted and the appetite stimulated. Try using natural flavor enhancers such as olive oil, vinegar, garlic, onions, ginger and spices to give food more flavor and help prepared food smell and taste better.
  • Difficulty chewing food is another obstacle for many seniors. Make chewing easier by drinking smoothies made with fresh fruit, yogurt, and Protein powder. Eat steamed veggies and soft food such as couscous, rice, and yogurt. Consult your dentist to make sure your dentures are properly fitted or you need your teeth worked on. Tooth pain or sensitivity can seriously interfere with maintaining a healthy daily diet, not to mention it can cause other serious help concerns if infection becomes a problem.
  • Dry mouth can be remedies by drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water or other liquids daily. Take a drink of water after each bite of food, add sauces and salsas to foods to moisten, avoid commercial mouthwash, and ask your health care provider about artificial saliva products.

  • Food pickiness can be a problem. If you do not like certain foods or if you were raised eating lots of meat and white bread, a new way of eating might sound unpleasant. Changing eating habits can be difficult but eating healthfully should be viewed as a new adventure. Start with small dietary change steps:
    • First and foremost, commit to keeping an open mind. Do not be afraid to try something new. Afterall, you just might like it.
    • Try including a healthy fruit or veggie at every meal.
    • Focus on how you feel after eating well. This will help foster new habits and tastes.
    • Do not be afraid to experiment with old recipes and try new ways to make them healthier.
  • Stuck in a food rut can changed by rekindling inspiration by visiting the farmers market and trying new, freshly picked produce, reading a cooking magazine with healthy new recipes, watching cooking shows on the television to get some great ideas, buy a new herb or spice you have not tried before, or discussing with your friends possible new foods and recipes they like. Make food variety a priority and you will look forward to getting creative with healthy meals.

  • If you cannot shop or prepare food for yourself, there are a number of possibilities, depending on your living situation, finances, and needs:
    • Take advantage of home delivery. Many grocery stores have Internet or phone delivery services.
    • Swap services. Ask a friend, neighborhood teen, or college student if they would be willing to shop for you.
    • Share your home. If you live alone in a large home, consider having a housemate or companion who would be willing to do the grocery shopping and cooking.
    • Hire a homemaker. Try to find someone who can do the shopping and meal preparation for you.
    • Check out senior services in your area to see what options may be available for your specific needs.

    Meals on Wheels provides nutritious meals to people who are homebound and/or disabled, or would otherwise be unable to maintain their dietary needs. The daily delivery generally consists of two meals: a nutritionally balanced hot meal to eat at lunch time and a dinner, consisting of a cold sandwich and milk along with varying side dishes. Generally, Meals on Wheels is available to those persons who are not able to provide for themselves, for whatever reason. Check with senior services in your area for information on finding a program to suit your needs.


    Healthy eaters have their personal rules for keeping with the program. Here are some to keep in mind.
    • Ask for help for your health’s sake. Know when you need a hand to make shopping, cooking, and meal planning assistance.
    • Variety is the spice of life. Try eating and cooking something new as soon as boredom strikes.
    • Make every meal workable. Healthy eating does not need to be a big production. Keep it simple and you will stay on track. Stocking the pantry and fridge with wholesome choices will make the workable even easier.
    • Set the mealtime mood. Set the table, light candles, play music, or eat outside or by a window when possible. Tidying yourself and your space will help you enjoy the moment.
    • Break habits. If you eat watching TV, try eating while reading instead. If you eat at the counter, curl up to a movie and a slice of veggie pizza.

  • Astragalus & Echinacea helps to boost the immune system. Caution: Do not take Echinacea if you have an autoimmune disorder.

  • Ginseng and Bilberry are good for giving extra energy, improving brain function, and increasing circulation. Bilberry also protects the eyes. Caution: Do not use Ginseng if you have high blood pressure.

  • Kava Kava, St. John's Wort, and Valerian Root are valuable as sleep aids and tranquilizers. St. John's Wort is also a natural antidepressant.

  • Licorice Root is an effective anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic agent that supports the organ systems. Caution: Do not use this herb on a daily basis for more than 7 days in a row. Avoid it completely if you have high blood pressure.

  • Nettle is full of vital minerals and is good for hypoglycemia, allergies, depression, prostate and urinary tract disorders, and host of other problems.

  • Saw Palmetto aids in preventing cancer and, for men, in improving benign (non-cancerous) prostate enlargement. It inhibits the production of dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that contributes to enlargement of the prostate.

  • Wild Yam contains natural steroids that have a rejuvenating effect. Steroids are what help exercise to melt off more weight and build muscle. This hormone is found in the human body as dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Take larger amounts - 2,400 mg daily, dropping to 1,600 mg daily - for two weeks, then stop for 2 weeks.



    Astragalus has been found to promote the formation of antibodies and increase the production of T-cells, on of the body's key lines of defense against disease. A recent clinical trial verified the herb's ability to boost the supply of infection-fighting white blood cells. Astragalus also has a proven ability to boost heart function and improve cardiac output. It helps relieve chest distress and breathlessness due to a weakened heart. Scientific studies of this herb have shown it to be effective on cancer and HIV patients by restoring compromised immune cells. Chinese scientists have found that Astragalus protects the body from absorption of toxic chemicals into the liver. Other research shows that people using this herb had less angina than those given heart drugs such as nifedipine. Chinese people consider Astragalus to be a better energy tonic for young people than ginseng. This herb is also used to help ward off or treat colds, improve heart function, memory, and learning, and promote the healing of wounded skin. Astragalus works well in treating anorexia, arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, malaria, kidney inflammations, painful urination, prolapsed uterus, uterine bleeding, edema, water retention, constipation, fever, and generalized weakness.

    Although many people take Astragalus at the onset of cold or flu symptoms, the Chinese believe taking huang qi at that time will cause the infection to go deeper. They instead use it while healthy as a defense shield against future illnesses. The recommended daily dosage of Astragalus is 9 to 30 g of dried root boiled to make tea. There are Capsules, Tablets, Fluid Extract, Dried Root and prepared tea to be taken for this herb. For best results, consult with your health care provider for the treatment of your condition.


    Bilberry is used for the treatment of poor night vision, day blindness, cataracts, macular regeneration and glaucoma. However, their Doctor/Optometrist on a regular basis should assist people with glaucoma and those with acute glaucoma should not depend on Bilberry use alone. In Italy there was a study done on Bilberries and those in the early stage of cataracts, 50 people were given Bilberries three times a day. The treatment stopped the progression of the cataracts in 97 percent of the cases. It can also be used to treat urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and diarrhea. There is some evidence that Bilberry can also be helpful for varicose veins. Scientific research on Bilberry showed that it contains a powerful substance known as anthocyanosides, which strengthens the walls of blood vessels, reduces inflammation, and generally stabilizes all tissues containing collagen (basic building block of veins, arteries, capillaries and connective tissue). Bilberry is used as an antiseptic and an anti-inflammatory. It is effective to treat inflammation of the mucus membranes of the mouth and throat. Recent research has shown that Bilberry extract has promising effect on anti-ulcer activity.

    The normal dosage of Bilberry is 120 to 240 mg twice daily of an extract standardized to contain 25 percent anthocyanosides.


    Burdock Root is used as a food and medicine in cultures all over the world. It is traditionally used for skin disorders associated with adolescence. Burdock combines well with Red Clover, Yellow Dock, and Dandelion. Uses include treatments for Acne; Athlete's Foot; Blood; Bursitis; Calcium Deposits; Disinfectant; Eczema; Gangrene; Gout; Itching; Osteoporosis; Poison Ivy/Oak; Psoriasis; Rheumatism; Skin Disorders; Skin Irritations; & Swelling.

    Burdock comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. A standard dose of Burdock is 1 to 2 grams of powdered dry root 3 times per day. For other formulations, read and follow product label directions. Burdock works well when combined with yellow dock, red clover, and cleavers.


    Dandelion leaves are commonly recommended as a food supplement for pregnant and post-menopausal women because of the numerous nutrients they contain. This plant produces a mild diuretic effect and reduces serum cholesterol levels. Dandelion root is used to improve appetite, minor digestive problems, and works as a milk laxative. Some modern naturopathic physicians believe that it can help detoxify the liver and gallbladder. Clinical trials have shown Dandelion to be effective in treating pneumonia, bronchitis and upper respiratory infections. It also helps with kidney function, pancreas, spleen, stomach, tinnitus, tonsillitis, osteoporosis, abscesses, anemia, boils, breast tumors, and cirrhosis of the liver, fluid retention, hepatitis, jaundice, rheumatism and warts. Dandelion may aid in prevention of age spots and works well in treating warts, fungus infections, and external and internal malignant growths. It is also used for treat skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and arthritis conditions. This plant is used for ulcerations of the urinary passages, obstructions of the liver, gallbladder, and spleen. The roasted Dandelion root can even be used as a coffee substitute. The German Commission E suggests the Dandelion Leaf for loss of appetite and dyspepsia, such as feeling of fullness and flatulence. This info was published in August of 92.

    Dandelion comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For use as a tonic, take 3 to 5 grams of the dried root or 5 to 10 ml of a tincture from the root, 3 times a day. For use as a diuretic or appetite stimulant take 4 to 10 grams of the dried Dandelion leaves in 1 cup boiling water and drink 3 times a day. For other formulations, read and follow product label directions.


    Three species of the Echinacea herb are useful in medicine: Echinacea augustifolia, Echinacea purpurea, and Echinacea pallida. Research has shown that Echinacea increases production of interferon in the body, which helps increase antiviral activity against influenza (flu) and herpes, an inflammation of the skin and mouth. It is antiseptic and antimicrobial, with properties that act to increase the number of white blood cells available to destroy bacteria and slow the spread of infection. This herb is thought to be an immune stimulant. Taking this herb at the first sign of cold or flu symptoms can actually shorten the term of a cold or even abort it when caught early enough.

    Echinacea is usually taken at the onset of a cold or flu and continued for 7 to 14 days. When using a powdered extract, take 300 mg 3 times a day. The standard dosage of an alcohol tincture (1:5) is 3 to 4 ml 3 times daily. For Echinacea juice, take 2 to 3 ml 3 times a day, and the whole root, 1 to 2 grams 3 times a day. Echinacea comes in many forms: Capsules, Tablets, Powder and Tincture, the best result is to follow the instructions on the package.


    The Europeans use Garlic as an all-around treatment for preventing atherosclerosis, the cause of heart disease and strokes. Scientific studies found that certain forms of Garlic lowered blood pressure and total cholesterol levels. Early scientific studies propose regular use can help prevent cancer. Garlic is an effective antibiotic when it contacts the tissue directly. Garlic has also been suggested as a treatment for asthma, colds, and diabetes. Garlic suppositories work very well as a remedy for women experiencing yeast infections such as candida.

    Eating two raw Garlic cloves a day are adequate for most purposes, but a standard dosage of Garlic is 900 mg daily of a garlic powder extract standardized to contain 1.3% alliin. When Garlic is crushed or cut, allinase, an enzyme, is brought in contact with alliin, turning it into allicin, which then breaks down into several different compounds. When purchasing Garlic, look for a 4 to 5 mg of allicin-potential for best results. Garlic suppositories can be used for treating yeast infections. You can make the suppositories using a clove of peeled garlic. Wrap gauze around the Garlic and insert inside the vaginal cavity. Every three to five hours, replace with a fresh suppository, and repeat for three to five days until the infection is gone. Garlic capsules can be used instead of the suppositories to treat yeast infections as well.


    In Germany, Ginkgo is the most widely prescribed herb, as it is considered to be as effective as drug treatments used for treating Alzheimer's disease and other severe forms of memory and mental function decline. Preliminary studies show that this herb is helpful in ordinary age-related memory loss as well. Germany's Commission E recommends Ginkgo for circulation problems that arise from hardening of the arteries. Some studies are showing promise in Ginkgo's ability to reverse impotence or difficulty achieving orgasm when caused by certain antidepressant drugs. Chinese research suggests this herb can improve the effectiveness of schizophrenia medications and possibly limit their side effects as well. Another study shows that Ginkgo is beneficial in relieving the bloating and fluid retention as well as the emotional disturbance associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Many people have used Ginkgo for macular degeneration, depression, complications of diabetes, and Raynaud's phenomenon; however, there is no evidence to support its effectiveness. It is also beneficial for asthma, dementia, depression, eczema, headaches, heart and kidney disorders, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). This herb can ease symptoms of altitude sickness as well. As a topical medication, Ginkgo is used to treat lesions on the fingers, toes, heels, ears, and nose caused by exposure to extreme cold, and using Ginkgo in wound dressings can improve circulation in the skin and promote quick healing.

    The recommended dosage of Ginkgo is 40 to 80 mg 3 times daily of a 50:1 extract standardized to contain 24 percent Ginkgo-flavone glycosides. For best results, consult with your physician for the treatment of your condition.


    There are three herbs commonly called Ginseng: Chinese, Asian, Korean Ginseng (Panax Ginseng), American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), and Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus; however, the latter is not Ginseng at all, but Russian scientists believe it functions like Ginseng, and so have promoted it as such. Siberian Ginseng is also less expensive so many use it instead of Panax Ginseng. There are two ways Ginseng is processed. Dried and unprocessed root is called "White Ginseng," while the steam and heat dried root is called "Red Ginseng." Traditional Chinese herbalists believe each form has its own particular benefits. The general public regard Ginseng to be a stimulant, but those who have used it seriously know that is not accurate. A Russian scientist studied the herb and found it to be an adaptogen. An adaptogen is a hypothetical treatment or prescription for health. A healthy lifestyle is the one indisputable example of an adaptogen. Eating right, exercising, and doing all things in moderation will help the body adapt to stresses such as heat, cold, exertion, trauma, sleep deprivation, toxic exposure, radiation, infection, or psychological stress. There are no side effects with an adaptogen. It must be able to treat a variety of illnesses and help an organism return to its balanced state no matter what the cause. Ginseng is seen as producing the same benefits. Chinese herbalists do not entirely agree as they say it works as other herbs do in that it is helpful for those who need its particular effects, but is neutral, and sometimes harmful for others. In addition to Ginseng's ability to help the body adapt to stress, studies have confirmed it's effectiveness in boosting the immune system, helping control diabetes, stimulating the mind, and improving physical performance (for athletes). This herb is also said to help prevent cancer, fight chemical dependency and improve sexual performance; however, there is no evidence to support those claims.

    The standard dosage of Panax Ginseng is 1 to 2 grams of raw herb, or 200 mg per day of an extract standardized to contain 4 to 7 percent ginsenosides. For Eleutherococcus, take 2 to 3 grams whole herb or 300 to 400 mg of extract per day. In most cases, a 2 to 3 week period of using Ginseng is recommended, with a 1 to 2 week rest period. Panax Ginseng is very expensive so many products contain very little of the herb, but instead is combined with other herbs and even caffeine in some cases. It is important to read product label directions.


    Population studies in Japan have proven the remarkable health benefits derived from regular consumption of Green Tea (Camelia sinesis). These benefits are due to the presence of polyphenols such as epigallocatechih gallate (EGCG) - the primary substance responsible for Green Tea's powerful antioxidant protection in the body.

Some studies have shown green tea may influence blood concentrations of hormones linked to at least one form of genetic hair loss known as androgenic alopecia. In one study published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer in 1998, Japanese researchers found that drinking green tea could increase levels of the sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in women. Since this biochemical binds testosterone, the more SHBG present in a woman's body, at least theoretically, the less testosterone will be in her bloodstream. And that, say some experts, may block the chain of hormonal activity that initiates some forms of hair loss. Since green tea is certainly a good source of healthful antioxidants and may have some anti-cancer properties, so it certainly would not hurt a woman to include it in her diet. One cup of green tea roughly equals 100 mg of tea catechins. Typically research investigations have involved individuals drinking 3 cups of green tea (300 mg catechins) each day. Alternatively, capsules of green tea are widely available. Most catechins when ingested in green tea are passed through the gut and excreted intact. Very little is actually absorbed into the blood stream. Research indicates that ingestion of 3 grams of green tea solids will yield plasma levels of catechins in the nanograms per milliliter of plasma range which is very low. The researchers also noted that increasing green tea intake to 4.5 grams did not significantly increase the amount absorbed into the blood plasma so there seems to be an upper limit to the amount of catechins that can be absorbed and carried in the blood stream. Taking larger amounts of green tea will not necessarily equate to an increased level of blood plasma catechins or improved treatment effect! Green tea is well tolerated by most individuals with no significant side effects reported.


    Horsetail is recommended to help keep bones and nails strong. The Chinese use Horsetail to reduce fevers and to soothe eye inflammations, such as conjunctivitis and corneal disorders. They also used this plant to treat dysentery, flu, swellings and hemorrhoids. A famous German herbalist, Rudolf Weiss, suggests that this herb can relieve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis; however, there is no scientific evidence to support its effectiveness. Recent research on Horsetail in Russia is showing promise in its ability to remove lead accumulations in the body.

    The recommended dosage of Horsetail is 1 gram in capsule or tea form up to 3 times a day as needed. Do not confuse medicinal Horsetail with its toxic relative Marsh Horsetail (Equisetum palustre).


    The German Commission E recommends Kava Kava for treating nervous anxiety, tension, and agitation. It is also used to relieve stress and reduce insomnia, tension headaches, and alcohol withdrawal. Kava is sometimes used as a local anesthetic. When combined with Pumpkin Seed, it is used in treating irritable bladder syndrome. Kava is used in Hawaii to reduce anxiety and fatigue, induce sleep, but is also used to treat asthma, arthritis pains, and urinary difficulties. Medical tests suggest it may be helpful in treating psychosomatic symptoms in menopause. In the South Sea Islands, Kava Kava is used as a calming and stimulating intoxicant. Taken in large quantities this herb produces a euphoric state.

    There are many forms of Kava and the quality varies with each manufacturer. Due to the nature of this herb, it is best to consult with a health care provider before using this herb for the treatment of your condition.


    Licorice is taken orally (DGL form) for ulcers, heartburn (esophageal reflux), and mouth sores. Other oral uses involving the whole herb is the treatment of coughs, asthma, and chronic fatigue syndrome. In its topical form (whole herb), Licorice can be used for eczema, psoriasis, and herpes. Scientific studies suggest regular use of DGL can heal ulcers as well as some over the counter medications; however, they must be taken regularly or the ulcer will return.

    Ulcer Pain - chew two to four 380-mg tablets of DGL before meals and at bedtime in conjunction with conventional medical care.
    Mouth Sores - Sucking on the tablets will relieve the pain. For best results, follow the directions listed on the label.
    Respiratory Problems - Take orally 1 to 2 grams of licorice root 3 times daily, not to exceed a week.
    Eczema, psoriasis, or herpes - Apply licorice cream to affected area twice daily.
    Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - This treatment must be taken under a health care provider's supervision to be given the needed dosage for the best possible effects.


    Milk Thistle extract is a potent antioxidant which prevents harm from free radicals and lends nutritional support to the liver. Milk thistle seed extract contains silymarin, a unique type of flavonoid-like compound considered the active ingredient of milk thistle.


    Nettle Root is widely used in Europe for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or prostate enlargement. Based on a preliminary study at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, Nettle leaf has become a popular treatment of allergies (hay fever), but is also used to help with goiter, inflammatory conditions, rheumatism and arthritis. This herb helps cleanse the body of toxins and wastes. Nettles can relieve fluid retention, bladder infections, stones and gravel. Externally, it can be used on cuts and wounds, hemorrhoids, nosebleeds, and for soothing and healing burns and scalds. Nettle is used in some hair care products to help stimulate hair follicles and regulate scalp oil buildup. In its cooked form, Nettle is highly nutritious and may be used as a general dietary supplement and is especially good for those who are convalescing, anemic, or elderly.

    Nettle comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. The recommended dosage of Nettle root, according to Commission E, is 4 to 6 grams daily of the whole root, or an equal dose of concentrated extract. The effectiveness in using Nettle root to treat prostate problems is believed to be enhanced when taken with saw palmetto or pygeum. The proper dosage for allergies is 300 mg twice a day of freeze-dried Nettle leaf. For other formulations, it is best to read and follow product label directions.


    Noni Morinda has been used to treat a wide variety of conditions that include asthma, digestive complaints, fevers, heart problems, and infections. Noni fruit juice has been used to treat diabetes, allergies, high blood pressure, mental depression, and jellyfish stings. An extract made from Morinda leaves in alcohol is effective against some types of parasites that infect humans. The dried Morinda root, called Ba Ji Tian, is used as a salve for wounds, and the fresh leaves can be used on burns and skin wounds as well. Traditional Chinese medicine uses the dried roots to remedy gastrointestinal and urinary tract conditions. Traditional herbalists use fresh Morinda leaves tied around joints to relieve arthritis pain or around the head to lessen a headache, and in an extract, the leaves are effective in eliminating some types of parasites.

    There is no evidence that Red Clover can help those with cancer; however, its use as a cancer therapy in many parts of the world has prompted scientists to take a closer look at this herb. It is also used to treat menopausal symptoms. This herb works well in treating bronchitis, asthma, and spasmodic coughs. Red Clover is also used to treat acne, eczema, abscesses, psoriasis, insect bites, stings, and other skin diseases. In a compress it works well in treating arthritis pains and gout. As an eyewash, Red Clover herb can be used to treat conjunctivitis.

    Red Clover comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For a tea, take 1 cup of boiling water to 2 to 3 teaspoons of dried flowers. Drink 3 cups a day. In capsule of tablet form take 2 to 4 grams a day. In using a tincture use 2 to 4 ml 3 times a day. For other formulations, read and follow product label directions.


    Germany's Commission E recommends Saw Palmetto as an accepted medical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). New Zealand, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, as well as other European countries, use Saw Palmetto and is regarded as the "gold standard" against which new prostate drugs must prove themselves. Saw Palmetto does not just relieve symptoms, but it actually has been shown to shrink and retard the enlarged prostate. It is also used for treating prostatitis (prostate infection). Using Saw Palmetto may also enhance sexual functioning and sexual desire. Due to its inhibiting the conversion of testosterone it may also inhibit hair loss. It is also used to treat acne, bladder inflammation, breast enlargement or reduction, bronchitis, cough, diabetes, digestive aid, diarrhea, high blood pressure, hormone imbalances (estrogen or testosterone), impotence, indigestion, menstrual pain, migraine headache, muscle or intestinal spasms, ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, polycystic ovarian syndrome, postnasal drip, and uterine or vaginal disorders.

    Saw Palmetto comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. The recommended dosage of Saw Palmetto is 160 mg twice a day of an extract standardized to contain 85 to 95 percent fatty acids and sterols; however, a single dose of 320 mg seems to be just as effective. Taking more than the recommended dose does not produce better results.


    St. John's Wort is mainly used for the treatment of mild to moderate depression. It can also be used for chronic insomnia and anxiety related to depression. St. John's Wort may also be effective in relieving seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

    St. John's Wort extract is usually standardized to the substance hypercin. The recommended dose of St. John's Wort is 300 mg 3 times a day of an extract standardized to contain 0.3% hypercin; however, a few new products on the market are standardized to hyperforin content of 2 to 3%, instead of hypercin, and should be taken at the same dosage. If the herb bothers you, take it with food. It can take four weeks of usage to receive the full benefits of St. John's Wort.


    In the 1970s, scientific human studies were performed on Valerian which lead the German Commission E to approve its use a sleep aid in 1985. This herb works well in treating depression, panic attacks, emotional stress, PMS, menstrual cramps, and despondency. It is also used for hypochondria, nervous headaches, migraine headaches, irritability, hysteria, and mild spasmodic affections. Valerian has been used to treat diarrhea, epilepsy, croup, convulsions, vertigo, nervous cough, delirium, neuralgia, muscle cramps, gas pains, stomach cramps, spasms, palpitations, gas, and colic.

    For treating insomnia, the recommended dosage of Valerian Root is 2 to 3 grams of dried herb, 270 to 450 mg of an aqueous valerian extract, or 600 mg of an ethanol extract, taken 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. For the best results, take this herb over an extended period of time. Try the same dosages for treating anxiety, or reduce the dose and take twice daily. Note: These dosages are meant to be used as guidelines. Always read product label directions before use.


    Various species of Wild Yam grows throughout North and Central America, and Asia, and has been used to treat indigestion, coughs, morning sickness, gall bladder pain, menstrual cramps, joint pain, and nerve pain. The primary, but incorrect use of Wild Yam as a source of women's hormones is based on the misconception that Wild Yam contains progesterone and DHEA. Wild Yam contains chemicals that chemists can use only as a starting point to manufacture progesterone. This herb does not contain progesterone. Some Wild Yam products have progesterone in them, but it is a synthetic progesterone that has been added to the product. Do not discount the use of Wild Yam as it can still be used to relax muscle spasms, reduce inflammations, and promote perspiration. This herb can be used for menstrual cramps or pain, menopausal symptoms, rheumatic conditions, and gallbladder complaints. Wild Yam is also used to treat colic, gallbladder disorder, hypoglycemia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), kidney stones, neuralgia, and rheumatism.     There is a great deal of misinformation among consumers, practitioners, and natural product vendors alike about the connection between wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) and progesterone. The female hormone progesterone was first synthesized in a laboratory in 1934, but the materials needed for the process were so expensive that the hormone, that could only be made in very small batches, was priced at $1000 per gram, or about $10,000 per gram in current dollars. Researcher Russell Marker developed a way to derive progesterone from diosgenin, a compound found in the Mexican plant cabeza de negra, Dioscorea macrostachya. This made progesterone extremely cheap and led the way to the development of oral contraceptives. While diosgenin can be converted into progesterone in the laboratory, it cannot be converted into progesterone in the human body. Wild yam contains no progesterone, natural or otherwise. It is, however, extremely useful for many gynecological complaints.

    Traditional Chinese Medicine has used wild yam for at least 2,000 years, since the time of the writing of the Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica. Wild yam "separates the pure from the turbid." It is used to treat conditions manifesting themselves as cloudy urine or vaginal discharge. It relievers lower back pain, numbness or stiffness in the legs and feet, and muscle aches, and it clears "damp heat" from the skin at sites of eczema, boils, or eczema. Mountain yam is used to treat stomach upset accompanied by fatigue, heavy sweating, and loss of appetite. Exercise can ward off conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis, and because it releases endorphins into the body, exercise can also help overcome depression. Our brains need exercise as much as our bodies do. Bodily exercise increases the supply of oxygen to the brain. Studies have found that no matter how old you are - whether you are in your 60s, 70s, 80s, or even in your 90s - you can rebuild muscle. Science has found that brain cells do not die as we age if we keep our minds active. Hobbies, reading, and acquiring new skills exercise the brain and help prevent memory loss.

  • Improve your body's oxygenation and circulation with deep breathing exercises. Try holding your breath for thirty seconds every half hour. Inhale and hold for thirty seconds, then place your tongue on the roof of your mouth where your teeth meet your gums and release the air slowly. Repeat this exercise every day.

  • Keep the colon clean. This is crucial for warding off degenerative diseases and slowing the aging process. Eat a high-fiber diet and use a cleansing enema once weekly. This book provided scientific validation for the many life extending effects of DHEA. It has been shown that the hormone DHEA often declines 40.8-72.8 percent by age 70 or later, leading to hormonal imbalances that can affect one’s quality of life. Peak blood levels of DHEA occur at approximately age 25, decreasing progressively thereafter. Thus, scientists have been looking at ways of restoring DHEA to youthful levels, and are now discovering mechanisms by which this hormone protects against age-related decline. Since 1981, several hundred studies have been published on DHEA’s possible benefits. One study investigated immune functions and DHEA using rats as test subjects. The scientists showed that DHEA administration to rats supports specific immune function known to be lacking in the elderly. Another study focused on the various benefits of DHEA supplementation, and noted that DHEA’s protective effect could be of benefit to the normal aging brain. Some studies have reported DHEA may improve mood and alleviate melancholy. In fact, as highlighted in two studies, participants have reported that they feel better when taking DHEA. In still another investigative study doctors noted that DHEA is one factor that determines lumbar spine density in aging men. In women, it has been shown that DHEA helps to protect bone mineral density.

    DHEA Precautions For Men: Before attempting to restore DHEA to youthful levels, men should know their serum PSA (prostate specific antigen) level and have passed a digital rectal exam. Men with abnormal cell growth in the prostate or severe benign prostate disease are advised to avoid DHEA since it can be converted into testosterone (and estrogen). Therefore, men are advised to have a PSA and digital rectal exam before initiating DHEA to rule out existing prostate disease. It is important for men over 40 to consult their physician to check their PSA and DHEA-S serum levels every six to twelve months thereafter. Men should also periodically check their blood levels for free testosterone and estrogen to make sure that DHEA is following a youthful metabolic pathway.

    DHEA Precautions For Women: When taking DHEA its also recommended take the following other nutrients to maintain a healthy balance. Women should consider estrogen and testosterone testing when they take their DHEA blood test in order to evaluate DHEA’s effect on their blood levels of these hormones. Women who have been diagnosed with an estrogen-dependent abnormal cell growth should consult their physicians before beginning the DHEA restoration process.

    Suggested Usage: The exact number of tablets to be taken should be determined by blood testing and the advice of a health care provider. Generally, place one to four tablets under the tongue, allow to dissolve and swallow. Take in the morning and/or afternoon. DHEA serum blood tests are suggested prior to and 3 to 6 weeks after initiating DHEA replacement therapy to optimize individual dosing. This product can be taken with or without food.
