DESCRIPTION
Sometimes people have a tendency to view the world and the people in their lives with hostility and anger. This type of cynical behavior very often leads to poor health habits. While aggression is a natural part of our emotions, if it is suppressed over a long period of time or expressed inappropriately or to excess, certain problems - including physical illness - are likely to surface. A vicious cycle then develops: During rage and anger, the hypothalamus and pituitary gland release the hormones in the brain that stimulate the medullas of the adrenal glands, which react by producing adrenaline, the stress hormone. This elevated level of adrenaline increases the feeling of aggression. Your heartbeat quickens, and you may experience sleep disorders and cardiac or gastric problems. Emotional difficulties, such as excess anger, are often the cause of poorly-developed feelings of self-worth and unresolved issues. Relaxation exercises and psychological counseling can support and help identify the causes of our aggression. You will then be able to deal effectively with situations that cause negative behavior.

HOLISTIC OPTIONS
Varying levels of aggression warrant different treatments. Milder forms of aggression, which can often begin with an unhealthy lifestyle, may be helped by eating a healthy diet and avoiding coffee and other stimulants. Abnormally aggressive behavior might require a psychological examination.
MOVEMENT THERAPY
Exercise is an excellent way to release pent-up anger. Choose an activity you are comfortable with, such as walking, biking, kick boxing, tai chi or running, to help elevate your mood.

AROMATHERAPY
Certain aromatic substances can positively influence our moods - lifting our spirits and also distracting us from thoughts that can promote aggression. These aromatic substances are known to release electric stimuli to the olfactory nerves; the stimuli travel to the areas of the brain where our perceptions develop. Try using a few drops of your favorite oil - Sandalwood, Lavender, Lemon-Balm or Orange Oils are ideal - in an aromatic lamp. This can quickly help to calm your nerves.
HYDROTHERAPY
Adding essential oils, such as Lemon-Balm or Lavender, to your bath can have a relaxing effect and help relieve tension. Short, tepid baths - those right around body temperature - are thought most relaxing.

BOTANICAL MEDICINES
When aggression appears to be due to worry, overwork or prolonged stress, consider taking Licorice, Milky Oats or Ginseng. If aggression is accompanied by sleeplessness, restlessness and muscle tightness, consider Valerian or Passionflower. When aggression is cyclical and associated with your menstrual period, try such remedies as Milk Thistle, Black Cohosh or Motherwort.
Extra Tip - The flower remedies Holly and Impatiens can be helpful for both irascibility and irritability. Take 2 drops of either remedy in a glass of water.
NATURAL HEALING TECHNIQUES - RELAXATION TRAINING
Relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, visualization or meditation, can help you to stay calm in stressful situations and times. Some adult-education programs offer courses in relaxation methods.
PSYCHOTHERAPY
Psychotherapeutic treatment often attempts to discover what may lie at the root of aggressive behavior, for example, past or buried experiences of emotional or physical violence. A counselor can help you understand why you are aggressive and teach you to cope with those situations in your daily life that provoke aggression.
NUTRITION
Processed food that contain phosphates are suspected to trigger aggression and hyperactivity, especially in children. As a test, refrain for about 2 months from foods that are rich in phosphates, such as cheese spread, meat and sausages, soft drinks and lemonade. Instead, plan your diet around whole foods with as few additives as possible. In addition, try taking the following supplements.
Magnesium: 250-750 mg daily Calcium: 500-1000 mg daily Vitamin B-6: 10-100 mg daily

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES
If your mood is constantly aggressive and irritable, a constitutional homeopathic treatment is available. Treatment with these remedies does not target a specific organ or function but rather your entire personality, so an experienced homeopath should be consulted. Homeopaths may prescribe the following preparations.
- Nitricum Acidum - 12X: This is helpful for rage attacks, when coldness intensifies irritability.
- Chamomilla - 6X: Try this for impatience when warmth intensifies irritability.
- Nux Vomica - 6X: This is for hypersensitivity and if warmth improves your mood.
