AGGRESSION
BASIC INFORMATION
"For Informational Use Only"
For more detailed information contact your health care provider
about options that may be available for your specific situation.
DESCRIPTION
Sometimes people have a tendency to view the world and the people in their lives with hostility and anger. This type of cynical behavior very often leads to poor health habits. While aggression is a natural part of our emotions, if it is suppressed over a long period of time or expressed inappropriately or to excess, certain problems - including physical illness - are likely to surface. A vicious cycle then develops: During rage and anger, the hypothalamus and pituitary gland release the hormones in the brain that stimulate the medullas of the adrenal glands, which react by producing adrenaline, the stress hormone. This elevated level of adrenaline increases the feeling of aggression. Your heartbeat quickens, and you may experience sleep disorders and cardiac or gastric problems. Emotional difficulties, such as excess anger, are often the cause of poorly-developed feelings of self-worth and unresolved issues. Relaxation exercises and psychological counseling can support and help identify the causes of our aggression. You will then be able to deal effectively with situations that cause negative behavior.

HOLISTIC OPTIONS
Varying levels of aggression warrant different treatments. Milder forms of aggression, which can often begin with an unhealthy lifestyle, may be helped by eating a healthy diet and avoiding coffee and other stimulants. Abnormally aggressive behavior might require a psychological examination.
MOVEMENT THERAPY
Exercise is an excellent way to release pent-up anger. Choose an activity you are comfortable with, such as walking, biking, kick boxing, tai chi or running, to help elevate your mood.

AROMATHERAPY
Certain aromatic substances can positively influence our moods - lifting our spirits and also distracting us from thoughts that can promote aggression. These aromatic substances are known to release electric stimuli to the olfactory nerves; the stimuli travel to the areas of the brain where our perceptions develop. Try using a few drops of your favorite oil - Sandalwood, Lavender, Lemon-Balm or Orange Oils are ideal - in an aromatic lamp. This can quickly help to calm your nerves.
HYDROTHERAPY
Adding essential oils, such as Lemon-Balm or Lavender, to your bath can have a relaxing effect and help relieve tension. Short, tepid baths - those right around body temperature - are thought most relaxing.

BOTANICAL MEDICINES
When aggression appears to be due to worry, overwork or prolonged stress, consider taking Licorice, Milky Oats or Ginseng. If aggression is accompanied by sleeplessness, restlessness and muscle tightness, consider Valerian or Passionflower. When aggression is cyclical and associated with your menstrual period, try such remedies as Milk Thistle, Black Cohosh or Motherwort.
WILD OATS / MILKY WILD OATS PRODUCTS
Avena sativa seeds are not only a rich source of carbohydrates and soluble fiber, they also have the highest contentof iron, zinc and manganese of any grain. They also contain compounds which are both sedative and soothing to the brain and nervous system. It is said to be a nerve restorative and aphrodisiac. Oat straw is, as its name suggests, the above-ground parts of the oat plant left after harvesting the grain. Oats are one of the plants that humans have eaten since prehistoric times The German E Commission states that oats, both straw and tops, are said to be good for chronic anxiety and stress. In Europe, oat straw is a long-trusted additive to soaps and skin conditioners. Oats are a staple of breakfast cereals, as well as being known to help the body in the management of healthy skin, hair, and nails. Recently, there has been some articles written claiming oatstraw may help with erectile dysfunction, and as such is a popular ingredient in alternatives to Viagra. Modern European herbal medicine, paid for by insurance, uses oat straw as a nervous system restorative and to strengthen a weakened constitution, as well as to treat genital herpes and shingles. There is no doubt that the silicic acid in the herb is soothing on skin. A single scientific study a number of years ago found that oat straw stimulates the release of luteinizing hormone, however there is no scientific evidence that oat straw has an effect on the human body's use of testosterone. On the other hand, there is no conclusive scientific evidence that it does not. Precautions: None, unless you are allergic to oats. Gluten sensitivity will not be activated by use of oat straw on the skin.
Wild Oat (Bromus Ramosus) is the Bach Flower Remedy for people who feel that they want to do something worthwhile with their lives but do not know in which direction they should move.

VALERIAN ROOT PRODUCTS
Contrary to popular myth, the modern drug Valium is not derived from valerian, and there is no relationship at all between them. Valerian root does, however, have a long history of use as a sedative in Western Europe, dating back to the time of Hippocrates, (ca. 460-377 B.C). Originally native to Europe and parts of Asia but now common throughout North America, in the U.S. valerian root is widely used in sleep aids and sedatives in various forms including teas, tablets, and capsules. Often, valerian is combined with other herbs traditionally known to promote sleep including hops, passionflower, lemon balm, chamomile, and lavender. After numerous scientific studies, Germany's Commission E approved Valerian root as a sleep aid. Can be combined with St. John's wort to increase its ability to reduce anxiety, or with hops and/or lemon balm to strengthen its sleep-inducing properties. Many people find the taste unpleasant and prefer to take it as a capsule or extract. Valerian is a calmative and tranquilizer. Its properties have been known at least since the time of Hippocrates, and it was prescribed by the ancient Greek physician Galen for the treatment of headaches, insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, menstrual problems, nervous stomach, and hysteria. Clinical trials have confirmed the use of valerian for treating insomnia, especially the insomnia that accompanies menopause. The advantage of valerian over tranquilizers such as Valium and Xanax is that it reduces sleep latency, the time required to fall asleep, without a period of bedtime drowsiness and without creating a "hangover" or grogginess the next morning. Valerian has greatest effect in treating chronic insomnia, rather than short-term sleeplessness. It also soothes the digestive system and may prevent cramping caused by irritable bowel syndrome. If you use valerian for several months and suddenly stop using it, you may experience withdrawal symptoms such as headache, insomnia, racing heart, and general grouchiness, although rare. Reduce dosage of a period of about a week if you wish to discontinue using the herb suddenly.

BLACK COHOSH PRODUCTS
This Black Cohosh Supplement is ethically wild harvested black cohosh root. Black cohosh is often used by midwives to help weak contractions to become stronger during labor. Germany's Commission E recommends using Black Cohosh for treating menopause, dysmenorrhea, and PMS. Clinical results show improvement in hot flashes, sweating, headache, vertigo, heart palpitations, tinnitus (a ringing or similar sensation in the ears), nervousness, irritability, sleep disturbance, anxiety, vaginal dryness, and depression. In a 1995 German trial, it was found that when combined with St. John's Wort, Black Cohosh was 78 percent effective in treating hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. As a treatment for menopause, medical studies reported Black Cohosh to be more effective than estrogen in relieving symptoms and in normalizing the appearance of vaginal cells under microscopic evaluation. In a 1999 study at the New York College, it was found that Black Cohosh was shown to inhibit the growth of T-47D cells. The study concluded that this herb and others may be useful in preventing breast cancer. In a 2002 German study, it was reported that Black Cohosh has antiestrogenic effects. It was previously thought to have estrogenic effects. This herb is useful in treating inflammatory arthritis and rheumatism. The sedative action in Black Cohosh is helpful in treating high blood pressure, whopping cough, and asthma.
Black Cohosh comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. The recommended dosage is 1 or 2 tablets 2 times a day of a standardized extract, manufactured to contain 1 mg of 27-deoxyacteine per tablet. For a tincture, take 2 to 4 ml per day. Black Cohosh can take 4 to 6 weeks to produce the full benefits. Do not confuse it with Blue Cohosh, which is potentially more dangerous because the chemicals in it are toxic to the heart.
Black Cohosh Safety & Interaction Information: Black Cohosh should not be taken for more than six months at a time. Black Cohosh rarely has side effects other than occasional mild gastrointestinal distress. Due to the potential hormonal activity, Black Cohosh is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women, or for adolescents. Women taking Black Cohosh should not take it together with birth control pills, HRT, such sedatives as diazepam or blood pressure medications.

MOTHERWORT PRODUCTS
Motherwort is a mint with dull green, hairy leaves and an intensely bitter taste. The botanical name Leonurus refers to a fanciful resemblance of the leaves to a lion's tale. Native to Central Asia, the German E Commission has stated that it may be useful for nervous cardiac disorder and as an adjuvant for thyroid hyperfuntion. Many noted herbalists have gone on record that motherwort is also something mood elevator. Nicholas Culpepper wrote that motherwort will make "the mind cheerful, blithe, and merry". Maude Grieve wrote that there is "no better herb for strengthening and gladdening the heart". Many folk remedies revolve around motherwort as well Several involve it being a useful herb for the transition period of a women's life, in fact the Chinese name for it, yi mu cao, translate as "benefit mother herb". One rather odd Hindu tale relates that if you make a tea of motherwort and add it to the laundry when you wash your socks and underwear, you will bring peace to your home. The traditional use of motherwort is the treatment of racing heart (tachycardia) caused by nervous tension. Long-term use may reduce the formation of clotting factors and also lower total cholesterol and triglycerides. Motherwort is also used to treat menstrual tension. It treats false labor pains, and it is useful in the stimulation of delayed or suppressed menstruation, especially when prolonged emotional stress is factor.

NATURAL HEALING TECHNIQUES - RELAXATION TRAINING
Relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, visualization or meditation, can help you to stay calm in stressful situations and times. Some adult-education programs offer courses in relaxation methods.
PSYCHOTHERAPY
Psychotherapeutic treatment often attempts to discover what may lie at the root of aggressive behavior, for example, past or buried experiences of emotional or physical violence. A counselor can help you understand why you are aggressive and teach you to cope with those situations in your daily life that provoke aggression.
NUTRITION
Processed food that contain phosphates are suspected to trigger aggression and hyperactivity, especially in children. As a test, refrain for about 2 months from foods that are rich in phosphates, such as cheese spread, meat and sausages, soft drinks and lemonade. Instead, plan your diet around whole foods with as few additives as possible. In addition, try taking the following supplements.
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
Unless otherwise specified, the dosages recommended here are for adults. For a child between ages 12 and 17, reduce the dose to 3/4 the recommended amount. For a child between 6 and 12, use 1/2 the recommended dose.
HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES
If your mood is constantly aggressive and irritable, a constitutional homeopathic treatment is available. Treatment with these remedies does not target a specific organ or function but rather your entire personality, so an experienced homeopath should be consulted. Homeopaths may prescribe the following preparations.
Nitricum Acidum - 12X: This is helpful for rage attacks, when coldness intensifies irritability.
Chamomilla - 6X: Try this for impatience when warmth intensifies irritability.
Nux Vomica - 6X: This is for hypersensitivity and if warmth improves your mood.
