DESCRIPTION
SKIN SPOTS (FRECKLES)
How can one tiny freckle turn into several freckles, seemingly overnight? Why do age spots appear suddenly, after years of spot-free skin? The answer is simple: increased melanin, a black or brown pigment in the skin, hair and eyes.
While hereditary primarily determines our skin's general condition, hormonal changes also affect melanin levels, which is why many people notice changes in skin pigmentation as they age. Over exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays is also one of the strongest contributors to irregular skin tones. In most people, skin irregularities show up as darkened spots, as with freckles, moles and age spots. White spots will appear where there is a lack of skin pigmentation; vitiligo, an autoimmune disease that affects pigment-carrying skin cells, is an example of this reverse pigmentation. Another skin tone irregularity is red facial blotching; this is usually caused by increased blood flow in the skin or by dilation of superficial capillaries, as is the case with rosacia. Any skin changes, however, may indicate skin cancer and warrant a health care provider's visit.
AGE SPOTS (LIVER SPOTS)
Age spots are flat brown spots that can appear anywhere on the body as it ages. They are also called liver spots. Most age spots appear on the face, neck, and hands. These brown spots in themselves are harmless, but they can be a sign of more serious buildup of wastes known as lipofuscin accumulation, a byproduct of free radical damage in skin cells. These spots actually signs that the cells are full of the type of accumulated wastes that slowly destroy the body's cells, including brain and liver cells. They are a surface sign of free radical intoxication of the body that may affect many internal structures as well, including the heart muscle and the retina.

FREQUENT SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
Flat, brown spots on hands, neck, face and other parts of the body as it ages.
CAUSES
Factors that lead to the formation of skin spots (freckles) include:
- Primarily heredity.
- Overexposure to ultraviolet rays (another significant factor).
Factors that lead to the formation of age spots include:
- Poor diet.
- Lack of exercise.
- Smoking.
- Poor liver function.
- Ingestion of oxidized oils over a period of time.
- Excessive sun exposure (primary factor). Exposure to the sun causes the development of free radicals that may damage the skin. Most people who have significant numbers of age spots have lived in sunny climates or otherwise had excessive sun exposure.
The formation of lipofuscin is associated with a deficiency of a number of important nutrients, including vitamin E, selenium, glutathione, chromium, and dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE). Consuming alcohol increases lipofuscin formation.
TREATMENT
Your best defense against skin spots is to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially when it causes skin to burn, can inflame the skin, stimulate pigment-carrying skin cells and increase the risk of skin cancer. Also, ultraviolet rays deepen the color of freckles and may promote age spots. Sunburns can be averted by avoiding long-term exposure to the sun, wear sunglasses and a hat, and always use sunblock or sunscreen.
CHECK FREQUENTLY FOR CHANGES
Any variation in freckles, moles or discoloration on your skin should be carefully monitored, especially if anyone in your family has had skin cancer. Moles are particularly susceptible and are often cancerous. Watch for changes in color and size. Have someone examine your back, checking for irregularities there.
GIVE YOUR SKIN A BREAK
If you do sunbathe, expose your skin gradually to the sun, say 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Skin cells are often damaged after extended sun exposure. Although the skin has amazing self-healing abilities and can repair minor damage caused by ultraviolet rays, you should rest your skin for 20 to 24 hours after sunbathing.
TONE THE SKIN WITH PLANT ACIDS
Plant acids, specifically alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), are popular ingredients in skin products recommended for acne, uneven skin tone, wrinkles and age spots. AHA-enhanced lotions and creams are available in different strengths - the more AHA, the greater the risk of drying and inflaming the skin. People with naturally dry or sensitive skin should look for a lower-strength product and apply it only every 2 to 3 days.
CONSIDERATIONS
Sunblock. To prevent over exposure to the sun's rays, use a SPF 15 lotion for the face. For total protection, an SPF 35 is better. It is particularly important to cover young children to prevent them from sun damage later in life.
Tretinoin. The prescription drug tretinoin (retinoic acid, Renova, or Retin-A) is a vitamin A medication being used for age spots with good results. Retin-A is a cream that is applied to the spots once a day for six months, causing larger age spots to lighten and smaller ones to disappear. While the cream fades discoloration, it stimulates the growth of new, healthy cells. They are often used with prescription- strength hydroquinone for a stronger bleaching effect. However, retinoids can be drying and harsh for some skin types, and it will take two to three months to see results.
Alpha hydroxyacid gel and beta hydroxyacid gel. These gels are applied to the spots every night and will lighten discoloration of the skin. Over-the-counter moisturizers containing 2 percent hydroquinone, a bleaching agent, will gradually lighten age spots over a few months. They work best when used in conjunction with glycolic acid moisturizer, which smooths out the skin. However, it will take a few months to see a difference, and they don't have much effect on darker, more stubborn spots.
Alpha hydroxyacid peels. Dermatologist-administered chemical peels that use 30 to 70 percent glycolic acid to remove hyperpigmented skin, wrinkles and fine lines. This a one of the faster ways to treat age spots, and involves putting a mild acid on the skin and then allowing it to heal. Peels smooth and firm skin and lighten age spots gradually. The treatment can be done during your lunch hour, and there is no recovery time. However, a series of several peels done once a month is needed before you'll notice any fading.
Liquid nitrogen therapy. Freezing brown or yellow spots off can usually eliminate them. Often used for wart removal, but is also used by placing liquid nitrogen on the age spot and cause it to turn white in about a month. Though it is one of the fastest ways to treat the marks, it can cause a permanent white spot or scar. During a painless in-office procedure, the health care provider brushes liquid nitrogen on the spots with a cotton swab. In two seconds the cells disappear.
Lasers. Laser treatment is the most expensive method to remove the age spots. It is also the most efficient treatment used by medical practitioners and can be an in-office treatment. Age spots and wrinkles and lines are burned off with a laser, removing most traces of age spots and discoloration, usually in one treatment. The cost of one treatment can range from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on how big the area being treated is. Your skin will be red and peeling and most likely scab in the days after the procedure. Expect recovery time of about a week. With this process, there is no lightening of the skin after removal is completed.

HOME REMEDIES FOR SKIN SPOTS
LEMON JUICE FOR FRECKLES
Although there is no sure way to remove freckles from your skin, some people believe freshly squeezed lemon juice dabbed on the skin several times a day may help fade or remove freckles. Caution: Long-term use may have its side effects. Do not go out in the sun or to a tanning salon during treatment. Lemon juice, like all citrus fruit juices, reacts negatively to UV light, resulting in the appearance of brown spots - in addition to freckles!
TURMERIC SKIN WASH
Turmeric contains the flavonoid curcumin, which has antioxidant and anticancer effects. Prepare a tea or use a commercially prepared tincture. Take care when you apply it, as turmeric will stain. Use a cotton ball or small cloth.
CALENDULA SALVE
Calendula has a regenerating effect on the skin and helps with all types of skin problems caused by excessive exposure to the sun. Rub the spots 3 to 4 times a day with calendula salve, available at health food stores. You can make your own home remedy calendula salve by using 1 cup of Calendula Essential Oil per 1 ounce of melted beeswax.
HerbalRemedies: Calendula Products
CUCUMBER LOTION
1/2 Cucumber
3 Tablespoons Carrot Juice
2 Tablespoons Wheat-Germ Oil
Make a paste of these ingredients to help fade freckles. Peel and dice the cucumber and mix it briefly in a blender. Blend in the other ingredients and smooth over the skin.
CHAPARRAL SKIN WASH
Chaparral leaves have high amounts of an antioxidant resin that is credited with anticancer and anti-inflammatory actions. Make a tea with chaparral and apply it to sun-damaged skin, age spots or rough-textured skin.
MEDICINAL TEA FOR SKIN REGENERATION
This her mixture makes a tea that is rich in minerals and supports the skin's regenerative processes.
1 Teaspoon Gotu-Kola Leaves
1 Teaspoon Calendula Flowers
1 Teaspoon Yarrow Flowers
1 Teaspoon Horsetail Leaves
1 Teaspoon Nettle Leaves
Mix these healing herbs and pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of the mixture. Steep for 10 to 15 minutes and then strain. Drink 1 cup of tea 4 to 5 times a day.
Extra Tip - Vitamin A, Vitamin E and Zinc may all reduce skin blemishes. These nutrients are known to deter microbial pathogens from entering the skin and to reduce eczema, dermatitis, and other skin lesions. These antioxidant nutrients also promote regeneration, repair and healing of the skin.
HERBS
Ginseng and Licorice. Caution: Both of these herbs can elevate blood pressure. Do not use them if you have high blood pressure.
Ginkgo Biloba improves circulation and is a potent antioxidant.
Burdock, Milk Thistle, and Red Clover aid in cleansing the bloodstream.
Green Tea may be beneficial for age spots.
Emu Oil has shown good results on brown spots.
HERBAL PRODUCTS
GINSENG:
There are three herbs commonly called Ginseng: Chinese, Asian, Korean Ginseng (Panax Ginseng), American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), and Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus); however, the latter is not Ginseng at all, but Russian scientists believe it functions like Ginseng, and so have promoted it as such. Siberian Ginseng is also less expensive so many use it instead of Panax Ginseng. There are two ways Ginseng is processed. Dried and unprocessed root is called "White Ginseng," while the steam and heat dried root is called "Red Ginseng." Traditional Chinese herbalists believe each form has its own particular benefits. The general public regard Ginseng to be a stimulant, but those who have used it seriously know that is not accurate. A Russian scientist studied the herb and found it to be an adaptogen. An adaptogen is a hypothetical treatment or prescription for health. A healthy lifestyle is the one indisputable example of an adaptogen. Eating right, exercising, and doing all things in moderation will help the body adapt to stresses such as heat, cold, exertion, trauma, sleep deprivation, toxic exposure, radiation, infection, or psychological stress. There are no side effects with an adaptogen. It must be able to treat a variety of illnesses and help an organism return to its balanced state no matter what the cause. Ginseng is seen as producing the same benefits. Chinese herbalists do not entirely agree as they say it works as other herbs do in that it is helpful for those who need its particular effects, but is neutral, and sometimes harmful for others. In addition to Ginseng's ability to help the body adapt to stress, studies have confirmed it's effectiveness in boosting the immune system, helping control diabetes, stimulating the mind, and improving physical performance (for athletes). This herb is also said to help prevent cancer, fight chemical dependency and improve sexual performance; however, there is no evidence to support those claims.
The standard dosage of Panax Ginseng is 1 to 2 g of raw herb, or 200 mg per day of an extract standardized to contain 4 to 7% ginsenosides. For Eleutherococcus, take 2 to 3 g whole herb or 300 to 400 mg of extract per day. In most cases, a 2 to 3 week period of using Ginseng is recommended, with a 1 to 2 week "rest" period. Panax Ginseng is very expensive so many products contain very little of the herb, but instead is combined with other herbs and even caffeine in some cases. It is important to read product label directions.

Licorice is taken orally (DGL form) for ulcers, heartburn (esophageal reflux), and mouth sores. Other oral uses involving the whole herb is the treatment of coughs, asthma, and chronic fatigue syndrome. In its topical form (whole herb), Licorice can be used for eczema, psoriasis, and herpes. Scientific studies suggest regular use of DGL can heal ulcers as well as some over the counter medications; however, they must be taken regularly or the ulcer will return.
Ulcer Pain - chew two to four 380-mg tablets of DGL before meals and at bedtime in conjunction with conventional medical care.
Mouth Sores - Sucking on the tablets will relieve the pain. For best results, follow the directions listed on the label.
Respiratory Problems - Take orally 1 to 2 g of licorice root 3 times daily, not to exceed a week.
Eczema, psoriasis, or herpes - Apply licorice cream to affected area twice daily.

GINKGO BILOBA:
In Germany, Ginkgo is the most widely prescribed herb, as it is considered to be as effective as drug treatments used for treating Alzheimer's disease and other severe forms of memory and mental function decline. Preliminary studies show that this herb is helpful in ordinary age-related memory loss as well. Germany's Commission E recommends Ginkgo for circulation problems that arise from hardening of the arteries. Some studies are showing promise in Ginkgo's ability to reverse impotence or difficulty achieving orgasm when caused by certain antidepressant drugs. Chinese research suggests this herb can improve the effectiveness of schizophrenia medications and possibly limit their side effects as well. Another study shows that Ginkgo is beneficial in relieving the bloating and fluid retention as well as the emotional disturbance associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Many people have used Ginkgo for macular degeneration, depression, complications of diabetes, and Raynaud's phenomenon; however, there is no evidence to support its effectiveness. It is also beneficial for asthma, dementia, depression, eczema, headaches, heart and kidney disorders, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). This herb can ease symptoms of altitude sickness as well. As a topical medication, Ginkgo is used to treat lesions on the fingers, toes, heels, ears, and nose caused by exposure to extreme cold, and using Ginkgo in wound dressings can improve circulation in the skin and promote quick healing.
The recommended dosage of Ginkgo is 40 to 80 mg 3 times daily of a 50:1 extract standardized to contain 24% Ginkgo-flavone glycosides. For best results, consult with your physician for the treatment of your condition.

Red Clover is also used to treat acne, eczema, abscesses, psoriasis, insect bites, stings, and other skin diseases. In a compress it works well in treating arthritis pains and gout. RECOMMENDATIONS
Eat a diet that is high in vegetable protein and that consists of 50 percent raw fruits and vegetables, plus fresh grains, cereals, seeds, and nuts. Be aware that seeds and nuts become rancid quickly when subjected to heat and/or exposed to the air; purchase only raw nuts and seeds that have been vacuumed sealed.
Omit all animal protein from the diet for one month.
Avoid caffeine, fried foods, saturated fats, red meat, processed foods, sugar, and tobacco.
Follow a fasting program to cleanse the liver and rid the body of toxins. A properly functioning liver and a clean colon are important. Use black radish extract or dandelion root and beet juice along with three days of fasting a month with distilled water and fresh lemon juice and fresh fruit and vegetable juices.

Limit sun exposure. Use a sunscreen on exposed skin parts while outside.
Do not use cleansing creams, especially hydrogenated, hardened creams. Cleanse your skin with pure olive oil and a warm wet washcloth, then rinse with lemon juice and water.
This has worked for some people: At night, saturate a cotton ball with pure lemon juice and put it over the spots (but do not apply near the eyes). There may be some tingling, but only for a few minutes. If there is not sign of irritation, apply morning and night.
