DESCRIPTION
Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder that to some degree afflicts about 80 percent of all Americans between the ages of 12 to 44 years. It is typically characterized by pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne has become the most commonly treated skin abnormality. Perhaps modern lifestyles contribute to this change in statistics. For those that suffer from acne, it is not merely a cosmetic problem. The consequences include emotional stress that can have a strong impact on one's self-esteem.
There are several forms of skin disease included under the general name of Acne. They are never fatal, but are very annoying, and causes the afflicted person to present an unsightly appearance. The difficulty is acne is very persistent, often baffling every endeavor to overcome it.
ACNE PUNCTATA
Is caused by a retention in the skin of the secretion of the sebaceous glands. This secretion chokes up the little ducts and becomes hardened. These ducts are situated alongside of the air follicles. The tips of the little masses of hardened secretion become black when exposed to the air, giving rise to the ordinary name of blackheads or flesh worms. Some used to suppose these were actual worms in the skin, and they do resemble them very much, for by pressure the ducts may be emptied of their contents, which look like yellowish worms with black heads. This form of acne is most common between the ages of 14 and 25 years, and usually makes its appearance over the face, and sometimes on the chest and back. Sometimes the retained secretion is deeper seated where air and dirt cannot reach it, and it remains white (whiteheads).
CAUSES
Acne often arises at puberty, when the body dramatically increases its production of androgens (male sex hormones). Thus, it is more common in males because of androgens (male sex hormones) like testosterone stimulate the production of keratin and sebum, which leads to clogged pores. During puberty, androgens increase in both sexes, making girls in this age group more susceptible as well. These hormones stimulate the production of keratin (a type of protein) and sebum (an oily skin lubricant). The sebaceous glands, located in each hair follicle or tiny pit of skin, produce the oil (sebum) that lubricates the skin. Sebaceous glands are found in large numbers on the face, back, chest, and shoulders. If sebum is secreted faster than it can move through the pores, a blemish arises. The excess oil makes the pores sticky, allowing bacteria to become trapped inside the follicle. Blackheads form when sebum combines with the skin pigments and plugs the pores. If scales below the surface of the skin become filled with sebum, whiteheads appear. In severe cases, whiteheads build up, spread under the skin, and rupture, which eventually spreads the inflammation. Several of these spots can come and go over a period of months or years. Although proper skin care is important in the treatment of acne, acne is not caused by uncleanliness (dirty pores), but is more likely to be a result of overactive oil glands.
Although more than 20 million teenagers suffer from this disorder, acne is not just affecting kids anymore. It is also affecting increasing numbers of adults. While teenage acne most commonly occurs on the face and/or upper body, adult acne is usually limited to the chin and jaw line, and involves fewer, but possibly more painful blemishes.
Hormones don't go away after adolescence, though. Many women suffer premenstrual acne flare-ups that are prompted by the release of progesterone after ovulation. Oral contraceptives high in progesterone can cause breakouts, too. The presence of candidiasis (Candida) can also cause hormonal changes that encourage the liver to produce the wrong substances for healthy sebum.
MoonDragon's ObGyn Information: Candida
The exact cause of acne is not clearly known, but factors that contribute to the condition include:
- Heredity.
- Oily skin.
- Androgens / hormonal imbalance.
- Candidiasis.
- Allergies.
- Stress.
- Use of certain drugs (especially steroids, lithium, oral contraceptives, and certain anti epileptic drugs).
- Over consumption of junk food.
- Diet high in saturated fats, hydrogenated fats, and animal products.
- Nutritional deficiencies.
- Exposure to industrial pollutants (machine oils, coal tar derivatives, chlorinated hydrocarbons) are some environmental factors.
- Use of cosmetics.
- Monthly menstrual cycles.
- Over washing or repeated rubbing of skin.
- A body pH that is too acidic or too alkaline also fosters the nesting and breeding of acne-causing bacteria.
MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Acidosis
MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Alkalosis
The skin is the largest organ of the body. One of its functions is to eliminate a portion of the body's toxic waste products through sweating. If the body contains more toxins than the kidneys and liver can effectively discharge, the skin takes over. In fact some health care professionals call the skin the "third kidney". As toxins escape through the skin, they disrupt the skin's healthy integrity. This is a key factor behind many skin disorders, including acne.
The skin also "breathes". If the pores become clogged, the microbes that are involved in causing acne flourish because they are protected against the bacteriostatic action of sunshine. Dirt, dust, oils, and grime from pollution clog the pores, but this can be eliminated by washing the skin properly.
TREATMENT
CONSIDERATIONS
Acne is a message that something may be wrong with your body chemistry, diet, and/or skin care routine. Proper diet, nutritional supplements, and finding the right skin care products may be all that is needed to correct the problem.
Contrary to popular belief, there are no specific foods that cause acne (aside from the pore-closing effect of sugary foods eaten in large amounts). Even chocolate and nuts do not aggravate acne, although they can aggravate viral skin infections.
MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Herpes Virus
An exception is the iodine found in seafood, which can bring on outbreaks in women who are sensitive to iodine. It is possible for a specific food item (or many other substances, such as balsams used in cosmetics) to trigger acne in cases of allergy.
MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Allergies
For severe acne, the drug isotretinoin (Accutane) is the only reliable treatment. It disrupts plug formation and shrinks the sebaceous glands. Isotretinoin cures or greatly reduces acne in about 90 percent of the people who use it, but it can cause side effects like dry skin, headaches, nosebleeds, and joint and muscle pain. The most dangerous side effect of isotretinoin is that it can cause serious birth defects, such as fetal brain deformities, if taken during pregnancy. It can be dangerous and can cause birth defects if a woman is taking this drug becomes pregnant up to two months after it is discontinued. If a woman with acne is in her childbearing years, isotretinoin is not recommended unless she is using effective birth control. There have been isolated cases of depression, and other mental disorders among people using this drug, and a study published in the Archives of Dermatology found that it might cause a loss of bone density, raising questions regarding its effect on the risk of developing osteoporosis later in life.
For severe acne, a new treatment that is much safer than Accutane has recently been developed. A treatment called Levulan PDT, or the "Blue Light Treatment," is ideal for patients of all ages, including teens. During a painless, in-office treatment, the face is first given a mild microderm- abrasion (sanding) to remove the surface layer of dead skin, then Levulan (5-aminole-vulinic acid) is applied to the face. This application makes acne bacteria more sensitive to light. After about 30 minutes, the Levulan is washed off and up to ten minutes of a special high-intensity blue light (not ultraviolet) is used to kill the bacteria. Some people require more than one session. Skin is more sensitive to sunlight right after treatment, and SPF 45 sunscreen is recommended for at least 24 hours.
The weapon of choice against moderate cases of acne is topical tretinoin (Retin-A). It helps to keep the pores from becoming clogged by increasing the rate at which dead surface skin cells are shed. Like isotretinoin, tretinoin should not be used during pregnancy. Use it with caution, because it renders the skin extremely vulnerable to sun damage. In addition, the safety of long-term use of tretinoin has not been established. Some "sibling" forms of tretinoin are being studied in the hope that they may not be as drying to the skin.
Research is being conducted on the development and use of androgen-blocking drugs to stop the oil glands from being turned on by hormonal functions.
The sports supplement androstenedione can cause acne in both men and women. Milk thistle helps to counteract this effect.
An antibiotic cream or an oral antibiotic is sometimes prescribed for acne. Tetracycline, erythromycin, or clindamycin, is sometimes prescribed for acne. If these drugs are not effective, minocycline may be prescribed. Be aware that this drug can have such side effects as shortness of breath and joint pain. The long-term use of antibiotics often leads to candida infection and in some people, leading to worsened acne. If you must take antibiotics, it is wise to take some form of acidophilus because antibiotics kill "friendly" bacteria along with "unfriendly" bacteria.
Long term use of the antibiotic minocycline (Dynacin, Minocin) can result in blue pigmentation in the gums, known as a "blue smile". If your health care provider prescribes this drug for acne, discuss the possibility of alternating between antibiotic treatment and treatment with barberry, coptis, goldenseal, olive leaf extract, or Oregon grape root. However, do not interrupt antibiotic treatment without your health care provider's consent.
Benzoyl peroxide is the active ingredient in many over-the-counter acne products. It can be helpful, particularly in mild cases, but it is extremely drying and allergic reactions can occur. It should not be applied around the eyes or mouth.
A study conducted by the Department of Dermatology of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in New South Wales, Australia, found that a 5-percent solution of tea tree oil was as effective as a 5-percent benzoyl peroxide for most cases of acne, without the irritating side effects.
Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring antibacterial compound proven in clinical tests to be as effective as the medications benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin (Retin-A), or tetracycline in controlling acne outbreaks. Use azelaic acid creams with the herbs listed below for maximum effect.
Blackheads should be removed only with a specially designed instrument, a procedure best done by a professional. Picking, squeezing, or scratching the blemishes may cause scarring, according to dermatologists. Compound Syrup of Stillingia is an excellent internal remedy. If a professional is unavailable to assist in the removal of blackheads, this can be accomplished by a skilled person. Unskilled squeezing is more detrimental than beneficial and can increase the inflammation. First apply over the affected part a cloth wrung out of very hot water, let it remain a few minutes to relax the structures, then gently squeeze out the accumulations, taking care not to abrade the skin by pins or finger nails, then apply cloths wet with cold water and extract of witch hazel in which borax has been dissolved. This remedy is from an old medical text.
Niacinamide is a major nutrient in the repair of any skin condition because it brings fresh, healthy blood to the surface of the skin. Niacinamide opens the vascular system which supplies the skin with blood and nutrients.
Kombucha tea, which has antibacterial and immune-boosting properties, has been found by many people to be beneficial for acne.
MoonDragon's Nutrition Therapy: Kombucha Tea
Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), a byproduct of wood processing, can be applied to acne lesions to reduce inflammation and promote healing. If used regularly, it may also help minimize scarring from severe cystic acne. Caution: Only DMSO from a health food store should be used for therapeutic purposes. Commercial grade DMSO such as that found in hardware stores is not suitable. The use of DMSO may result in garlicky body odor. This is temporary, and is not a cause for concern.
An acne treatment program called Derma-Klear from Enzymatic Therapy may be helpful.
In rare cases, acne may be a sign of a potentially serious hormonal disorder caused by tumors in the adrenal glands or ovaries. Other symptoms of such problems include irregular menstrual periods and excess facial hair. If such symptoms develop, consult with your health care provider.

Burdock Root and Red Clover are powerful blood cleansers. Milk Thistle aids the liver in cleansing the blood.
Burdock root and red clover are powerful blood cleansers. Milk thistle aids in the liver in cleansing the blood. Both burdock and dandelion can help cleanse the liver. A liver that is not performing at its best can worsen acne because it cannot break down and clear excess hormones from the body as it should.
Burdock and Dandelion also contain insulin, which can improve the quality of skin by removing bacteria.
A poultice using Chaparral, Dandelion, and Yellow Dock Root can be applied directly to the areas of the skin with acne. Note: Chaparral is recommended for external use only.

Tea Tree Oil is a natural antibiotic and antiseptic. Dab full-strength tea tree oil (sparingly) on blemishes three times a day, or add 1 dropperful of tea tree oil to 1/4 cup warm water and pat it on the affected area with a clean cotton ball (be sure to use 100-percent cotton). Tea tree soap works well, too. For irritated skin, mix Tea Tree Oil with Sweet Almond Oil in a 1:9 ratio. Warm the mixture and apply it to the affected skin 3 times a day.
Other beneficial herbs include Alfalfa, Cayenne (capsicum), Echinacea, and Yellow Dock Root.
Propolis is a resinous substance bees collect from certain trees to produce a "cement." Bees use it to construct and repair the hive, blocking invasions of fungi, bacteria and viruses. It is similarly beneficial in the human body. As a salve or tincture, it has a germicidal effect and can be used to speed the healing of wounds. When taken internally, it stimulates the immune and circulatory systems.

Lemon-Balm Oil is a great remedy for stress-related skin and facial blemishes. Mix 2-5 drips of Lemon-Balm Oil with 1 1/2 ounces of Base Oil, such as Sweet Almond or Wheat-Germ Oil. Massage the mixture into the back, on either side of the spine, to reduce stress and anxiety. The same diluted mixture can be applied to many kinds of skin inflammations and insect bites. Take Care! To avoid skin irritation, never use pure Lemon-Balm Oil on large areas of the skin. Instead dilute it using no more than 5 drops per 1.5 ounces of base oil such as Jojoba, Sweet Almond, Wheat-Germ Oil
Lime Oil can be used for treating pimples. Use a cotton swab to apply a drop of lime oil that has been diluted in 2 tablespoons of Witch Hazel to the inflamed skin. This mixture supports the skin's natural protective layer of acids and prevents scarring. Take Care! Do not use any type of skin care product that may contain lime oil before going out in the sun to prevent brown pigment from forming since Lime Oil makes skin more sensitive to sunlight.
Rosewood Oil is used to treat acne and blemishes. Add 4 drops each of Rosewood and Lavender Oils to 1/2 cup distilled water. After cleaning your face, dab it with a cotton pad dipped in the solution to clear up acne and prevent blemishes. Shake the solution well with each use. The oil tends to separate out. Label and date the bottle.

Wild Pansy can be used to treat acne and psoriasis. Toxins can accumulate in the body and cause impurities in the skin, resulting in acne. The tea's astringent action cleans and tightens the pores. In addition, it rids the body of toxins. Make a strong tea using 2 teaspoons of wild pansy and 3/4 cup of water. Let it cool, dip a cloth in the mixture and apply it to the affected areas. Or mix equal parts of wild pansy and calendula, which also heals the skin. You may also pour the hot tea into a bowl and drape a towel over your head to allow the steam to purify the skin.
A compress of watercress can be used to treat blemishes. Mash fresh watercress leaves and place them on affected areas for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool to lukewarm water.

CAYENNE:
Cayenne Pepper contains beta-carotene; beta-ionone, citric acid, hesperidin, imonen, lutein, and quercetin just to name a few. It also contains capsaicin, which reduces pain and inflammation. When combined with other herbs, Cayenne Pepper helps increase their effectiveness by helping them enter the blood stream faster. Capsaicin can also stimulate and then desensitize the warmth detectors in the hypothalamus gland so that a drop in body temperature is evident. This enables natives in hot southern climates like Central and South America and Africa, to tolerate the heat a lot better than we would. Cayenne Pepper has been known for its ability to aid in digestion, improve circulation, and reduce or stop bleeding from stomach ulcers. Taken internally it stimulates circulation and induces sweating to breed a fever. Some native people of Thailand believe that eating Cayenne everyday helps reduce blood clots. Herbalists recommend it to treat colds and infectious diarrhea, arthritis and rheumatism. There is scientific evidence that suggests adding Cayenne Pepper to meals boosts vitamin C levels and revs up the metabolism. This pepper is also used with lobelia to help soothe nerves. It is beneficial for the heart, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, spleen, and stomach. In naturopathic medicine, Cayenne Pepper is combined with lemon juice, and salt to relieve even the worst sore throat pain for up to 4 hours. It also fights viral infection. When applied topically in a lotion or salve Cayenne works to soothe muscle aches and pains associated with arthritis, rheumatism, backache, strains and sprains. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Capsaicin for pain caused by shingles, an adult disease that is caused by the virus that causes chicken pox in children. Such over-the-counter (OTC) creams as Zostrix or Heet contain capsaicin and are applied externally to treat rheumatic and arthritic pains, cluster headaches, diabetic foot pain, fibromyalgia, and post-herpetic nerve pain. These creams usually contain 0.025 - 0.075% capsaicin. In 2002 there was some research done that helped to determine Capsaicin's pain relieving effects. Creams that contain the compound lowered pain in arthritis sufferers' hands by 40% when used four times a day. A study done for pain from long-term shingles found that 77% of the people had reduced pain after using the cream for four months. The study also said that Capsaicin containing ream is less expensive and safer than other painkillers used for the same conditions.
Cayenne Pepper comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For taking capsules, the recommended daily dose is 1 capsule 2 to 3 times a day. Adults and children two and above can safely use it topically 3 to 4 times a day. For treating a sore throat, combine the juice of one-half lemon or lime with one full tablespoon of salt. Stir both into one-half cup of lukewarm distilled water. Stir in one-quarter teaspoon of Cayenne pepper. Gargle as needed, but do not swallow.

ECHINACEA:
Three species of the Echinacea herb are useful in medicine: Echinacea augustifolia, Echinacea purpurea, and Echinacea pallida. Research has shown that Echinacea increases production of interferon in the body, which helps increase antiviral activity against influenza (flu) and herpes, an inflammation of the skin and mouth. It is antiseptic and antimicrobial, with properties that act to increase the number of white blood cells available to destroy bacteria and slow the spread of infection. This herb is thought to be an immune stimulant. Taking this herb at the first sign of cold or flu symptoms can actually shorten the term of a cold or even abort it when caught early enough.
Echinacea is usually taken at the onset of a cold or flu and continued for 7 to 14 days. When using a powdered extract, take 300 mg 3 times a day. The standard dosage of an alcohol tincture (1:5) is 3 to 4 ml 3 times daily. For Echinacea juice, take 2 to 3 ml 3 times a day, and the whole root, 1 to 2 g, 3 times a day. Echinacea comes in many forms: Capsules, Tablets, Powder and Tincture, the best result is to follow the instructions on the package.

YELLOW DOCK ROOT:
Yellow Dock is used in treating conditions of the blood and glandular system and is indicated in scrofula, eruptive diseases, especially when discharges are experienced, as in running of the ears, ulcerated eyelids and skin conditions, itch, scurvy, brittle nails, etc. This herb works in treating bowel infections, peptic ulcers and is stimulates the liver and bile production. It can also help improve digestion, and reduce flatulence and distension. The root is used in treating gout, arthritis, cystitis, water retention, urinary stones and gravel. In Bello, Russia, they use the flowers for dysentery, kidney and bladder, diarrhea, stomach sickness, and the root for pain after heavy lifting. Herbalists suggest using the mineral-rich plant for cancer, leprosy, bleeding of the lungs and bowels and for rheumatic conditions. Yellow Dock works well in treating skin problems such as weeping eczema, psoriasis, nettle rash, boils and abscesses by pulling toxins out of the tissues. It has also been used to treat irregular periods, heavy bleeding and menstrual pain and fibroids in the uterus. The iron in the root can provide an excellent remedy for anemia and can help reduce debility, mental lethargy, headaches, convalescence, low spirits and irritability.
Yellow Dock comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. The standard dosage of this herb is 1 teaspoonful of the grated or crushed root to 1 cup of boiling water. Drink 3-4 cups daily. A syrup can be made by boiling 1/2 lb. of the crushed root in 1 pint of syrup and is taken in teaspoonful doses 3 or 4 times a day. Yellow Dock root can be used in poultices for skin ulcers, hard tumors, eruptive skin diseases, or you can use an ointment made with the root simmered in oil. For other formulations, read and follow product label directions.

TEA TREE:
Tea Tree oil has a penetrating quality that makes it helpful in treating infected wounds, and it is most effective as an antiseptic against many bacteria and fungi. Tea Tree oil can be used to help control acne when applied directly to the skin. Preliminary studies show it can be useful in treating vaginal infections caused by candida or other organisms, and fungal infections of the feet and nails. In Australia, dentists have patients use Tea Tree oil mouthwash before dental procedures, and as a daily preventive against periodontal disease.
Tea Tree preparations contain various percentages of tea tree oil. A typical strength used when treating acne is 5 to 15%, for fungal infections, suggested concentration is 70 to 100%, and for vaginal infections, 1 to 40% concentration with medical supervision. Tea Tree can also serve as a deodorant. For the best results, use Tea Tree products that contain oil from the alternifolia species of Melaleuca only, standardized to contain not more than 10% cineole, which is an irritant, and at least 30% terpinen-4-o1.

HERBS TO AVOID
If you have acne, you should avoid the following herbs:
- Avena
- Chrysin
- Muira Puama
- Pine Pollen
- Siberian Ginseng
- Stinging Nettle
- Tribestan (A trademarked extract of the herb Tribulus terrestris.)
All of these herbs either increase testosterone production or elevate testosterone levels in the bloodstream.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Eat a diet that is high in fiber, such as whole-grain cereals and breads or by taking a fiber supplement. This is important for keeping the colon clean and ridding the body of toxins. Burdock cereal, called goboshi in Japanese groceries, is a good source of fiber when eaten two to three times a week. Fiber absorbs waste testosterone in the intestines, which prevents the hormone from being reabsorbed through the intestinal wall. Always take fiber supplements separately from other supplements and medications.
Drink at least 8 glasses of quality water per day. Water helps to keep the body and skin hydrated as well as flushing toxins from the body. The additional fluid in skin cells opens pores.
Increase your intake of raw foods. The more natural raw foods consumed, the faster the skin will clear and heal. Include raw foods that contain oxalic acid, including almonds, beets, cashews, and Swiss chard. Exceptions are spinach and rhubarb; these contain oxalic acid, but should be considered in small amounts only.
Eat more foods rich in zinc, including shellfish, soybeans, whole grains, sunflower seeds, and a small amount of raw nuts daily. Zinc is an antibacterial agent and a necessary element in the oil-producing glands of the skin. A diet low in zinc may promote flare-ups. Take 45 mg zinc picolinate daily for 6 to 12 weeks. Zinc is involved in immune-system stimulation, protein formation, and wound healing. In clinical tests, it has been found to be as effective as the antibiotic tetracycline in relieving acne lesions.
Eat a lot of fruits. This is always good for the skin because of the nutritional value and water content of fruit. You can also use certain fruits as a tonic on the surface of the skin. Grapes, strawberries, and pineapple are rich in alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs). These acids help to exfoliate the skin by removing the dead skin cells that can clog the oil glands.
Eat plenty of soured products, if you are not allergic to dairy products, such as low-fat yogurt, to maintain healthy intestinal flora.
Be sure your diet contains vitamins A, C, E, and essential fatty acids. Supplements of these vitamins can prove to be beneficial for acne sufferers. Although vitamin A is important in fighting acne, you must be sure not to take too much. Vitamin E can help regulate vitamin A levels and can also aid in scar prevention.
Avoid alcohol, butter, caffeine, cheese, chocolate, cocoa, cream, eggs, fat, fish, fried foods, hot and spicy foods, hydrogenated oils and shortenings, margarine, meat, poultry, wheat, soft drinks, and foods containing brominated vegetable oils.
Try eliminating dairy products from your diet for one month. Acne may develop due to an allergic reaction to dairy products, and the fat content of the dairy products can worsen the condition. Modern dairy and other animal products often contain hormones and steroids that can upset the body's natural hormonal balance. After the month is over, add dairy products back one at a time to see if the acne returns.
Avoid all forms of sugar. Sugar impairs immune function. In addition, biopsies of individuals with acne have shown their tissues' glucose tolerance to be seriously flawed. This condition has been called "skin diabetes" by researchers. Sugar promotes the growth of candida, which may be a contributing factor to acne. If you do eat sweets, eat them in small amounts over a period of several hours, rather than in large amounts all at once. Eating large quantities of sugar aggravates acne by causing the body to produce insulin, which causes a burst of growth in the cells lining the pores and makes them close up.
Eliminate all processed foods from the diet, and do not use iodized salt. These contain high levels of iodine, which is known to worsen acne. Enzymes induce the nutrients in food to be used to construct muscle tissue, nerve cells, bone, skin, and glandular tissue. Because processed foods contain so few enzymes, they can result in damage to the skin and its collagen. For the same reason, avoid fish, kelp, and onions.
Follow a Fasting Program.

Use cleansing enemas to remove toxic buildup in the system and promote faster healing.
MoonDragon's Health Therapy: Enemas
Keep the affected area as free of oil as possible. Shampoo your hair frequently. Use an all-natural soap with sulfur that is designed for acne (available in health food stores). Wash your skin thoroughly but gently; never rub hard, and no more than twice daily. Vigorous scrubbing and overwashing as well as repeated touching of the skin can make acne worse by overstimulating the sebaceous glands, causing them to produce excessive amounts of sebum.
Avoid wearing makeup. If you feel you must use cosmetics, use only natural, water-based products; do not use any oil-based formulas. Avoid any products containing harsh chemicals, dyes, or oils. Wash and dry makeup applicator brushes and sponges in alcohol after each use to avoid contamination.
Use a mixture of organic apple cider vinegar and quality water to balance the skin's pH. Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 10 parts quality water, and apply the mixture on the affected area.
Friction makes pimples more likely to rupture, so avoid wearing tight clothing like turtlenecks. Carefully adjust straps on sports equipment such as bicycle or football helmets. Even using the telephone can exacerbate inflammation if you hold the receiver against your cheek for long periods. Keep your hair away from your face to prevent excess oil and bacteria from being deposited on the skin.
If you must shave an area of skin affected by acne, use a standard blade. Using an electric razor may be beneficial. When shaving with a blade, use a single-edge blade razor and always shave in the direction of hair growth.
As much as possible, avoid stress. Stress can promote hormonal changes and cause flare-ups. Many dermatologists also recommend 15 minutes of sunshine each day, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep for people with acne.
Avoid the use of oral or topical steroids, which can aggravate acne.
Do not squeeze the spots. To do so is to risk increasing inflammation by causing breaks in the skin in which harmful bacteria can lodge. Do not touch the affected area unless your hands have been thoroughly cleaned.
