DESCRIPTION
When pus accumulates in a tissue, organ, or confined space in the body due to infection, an abscess forms. Abscesses may be located internally or externally, and may result from an injury or a lowered resistance to infection. A boil is an external (skin) abscess.
MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Disorders - Boil
The material inside an abscess consists of living and dead white blood cells, dead tissue, bacteria, and/or toxins - all of which need to be discarded from the body.
An abscess that appears suddenly (in a matter of a few hours or overnight) is said to be acute. If an abscess has been present for a period of days or weeks, it is termed chronic. Chronic abscesses are more resistant to treatment because the damage is more severe and/or widespread. Acute abscesses are less extensive and generally respond to treatment within a matter of days.
An abscess, if treated, should begin to heal in a few days. Usually there is complete healing in a week or two. An abscess that does not show any signs of healing within this time can be an indication of problems within the immune system. Complicates, although rare, can include bleeding or recurrence of the abscess.
FREQUENT SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
Swelling in infected part.
Inflammation.
Tenderness, pain.
Fatigue.
Loss of appetite.
Weight loss.
Alternating bouts of fever & chills.
In severe cases, bacteremia (blood infection) and/or rupture of the abscess may occur.
Inflamed, red and tender gums can characterize acute dental abscesses. The affected tooth may be sensitive or loose, and a dull pain is often present. A periodontal abscess can cause an overall sick feeling accompanied by fever and swollen lymph glands. However, chronic dental abscesses often produce no symptoms and are harder to treat than acute abscesses, as they have been present longer and have had the chance to do more extensive damage.
CAUSES
An abscess can form in the brain, lungs, teeth, gums, abdominal wall, gastrointestinal tract, ears, tonsils, sinuses, breasts, kidneys, prostate gland, or almost any other body part. Infections are the most common human diseases and can be produced by bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi.
Basically, an abscess is a sign that the body is trying to rid itself of impurities. The impurities may be half-starved cells, deficient in nutrients such as sulfur, or toxins that accumulate because of a failure of the normal eliminative processes. Such a situation often stems from poor diet and exposure to environmental pollutants, chemicals, and other harmful substances. Eating junk food not only clutters the system with foods lacking in nutrients, but also prevents the cellular wastes from being eliminated efficiently by causing such problems as constipation and sluggish liver, spleen, and kidney function.
MoonDragon's ObGyn Information: Disorders - Constipation
TREATMENT
CONSIDERATIONS
Some abscesses need to be treated surgically. This is done by lancing (piercing) the abscess, draining it and deep cleaning the wound, but most require only the administration of antibiotics. These drugs kill infectious bacteria, but they also destroy the "friendly bacteria" that normally inhabit the digestive tract. In addition, they deplete the body of the B vitamins. Antibiotics are of no use when fighting a viral infection.
If an abscess breaks open and drains without assistance, your health care provider may still need to make sure the entire area is sufficiently clean to prevent recurrence. This minor surgery involves making an incision across and through the abscess so it can be opened and thoroughly drained. Sterile gauze may be provided to absorb any additional fluids that may appear. This allows healing to begin from the base up.
Deep abscesses must be watched to ensure that they are not affecting or obstructing the function of deeper tissues or organs.
For very mild external abscesses, the application of heat from a warm-water soak, along with improved nutrition, can usually provide sufficient treatment. Most abscesses, however, require treatment with antibiotics or herbs. Taking acidophilus and B Vitamins and increasing your intake of liquids can often aid in the healing process.
To heal an abscess, you may have to get plenty of bed rest, drink plenty of fluids, and either apply ice packs or take hot baths to alleviate the pain.
To aid in healing, the blood must be cleansed and vitamin deficiencies that accompany skin eruptions must be corrected.
Abscesses do not usually interfere with normal bathing or showering, but you should remove bandages first so the wound may be gently washed with surgical, antibacterial, or other mild, unscented soap. Afterward, apply a new bandage.

Herbal Remedies: Tea Tree Oil Antiseptic Soap, 8 fl. oz. Antibacterial, mild and gentle to the skin with the powerful cleansing needed to kill germs.
Good hygiene and careful cleansing of the skin to prevent a wound or injury from becoming infected may prevent some abscesses.
Appropriate treatment for a dental abscess depends on the type of abscess. Most often, the pus is drained from the infected area, antibiotics are prescribed, and deep cleaning is necessary. In other cases, a tooth may have to be extracted or root-canal surgery performed.
MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Periodontal Disease
Good dental hygiene can help prevent dental abscesses. This includes regular brushing and flossing, as well as regular dental checkups.
HERBAL & HOLISTIC RECOMMENDATIONS
HERBS
The following herbs are beneficial for healing abscesses and cleansing the blood: burdock root, cayenne (capsicum), dandelion root, red clover, and yellow dock root.

CAYENNE:
Cayenne Pepper contains beta-carotene; beta-ionone, citric acid, hesperidin, imonen, lutein, and quercetin just to name a few. It also contains capsaicin, which reduces pain and inflammation. When combined with other herbs, Cayenne Pepper helps increase their effectiveness by helping them enter the blood stream faster. Capsaicin can also stimulate and then desensitize the warmth detectors in the hypothalamus gland so that a drop in body temperature is evident. This enables natives in hot southern climates like Central and South America and Africa, to tolerate the heat a lot better than we would. Cayenne Pepper has been known for its ability to aid in digestion, improve circulation, and reduce or stop bleeding from stomach ulcers. Taken internally it stimulates circulation and induces sweating to breed a fever. Some native people of Thailand believe that eating Cayenne everyday helps reduce blood clots. Herbalists recommend it to treat colds and infectious diarrhea, arthritis and rheumatism. There is scientific evidence that suggests adding Cayenne Pepper to meals boosts vitamin C levels and revs up the metabolism. This pepper is also used with lobelia to help soothe nerves. It is beneficial for the heart, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, spleen, and stomach. In naturopathic medicine, Cayenne Pepper is combined with lemon juice, and salt to relieve even the worst sore throat pain for up to 4 hours. It also fights viral infection. When applied topically in a lotion or salve Cayenne works to soothe muscle aches and pains associated with arthritis, rheumatism, backache, strains and sprains. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Capsaicin for pain caused by shingles, an adult disease that is caused by the virus that causes chicken pox in children. Such over-the-counter (OTC) creams as Zostrix or Heet contain capsaicin and are applied externally to treat rheumatic and arthritic pains, cluster headaches, diabetic foot pain, fibromyalgia, and post-herpetic nerve pain. These creams usually contain 0.025 - 0.075% capsaicin. In 2002 there was some research done that helped to determine Capsaicin's pain relieving effects. Creams that contain the compound lowered pain in arthritis sufferers' hands by 40% when used four times a day. A study done for pain from long-term shingles found that 77% of the people had reduced pain after using the cream for four months. The study also said that Capsaicin containing ream is less expensive and safer than other painkillers used for the same conditions.
Cayenne Pepper comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For taking capsules, the recommended daily dose is 1 capsule 2 to 3 times a day. Adults and children two and above can safely use it topically 3 to 4 times a day. For treating a sore throat, combine the juice of one-half lemon or lime with one full tablespoon of salt. Stir both into one-half cup of lukewarm distilled water. Stir in one-quarter teaspoon of Cayenne pepper. Gargle as needed, but do not swallow.

Their product and resource links are constantly changing and being upgraded. Many times there are more than one link to a specific product.
