    VETIVER HERBAL& OIL DESCRIPTION

Vetiver is also known as Vetiveria zizanioides, Chrysopogon zizanioides, Vetivert, Khus Khus, and Madagascar.

Vetiver is a perennial aromatic tropical grass known for its fragrant oil. Native to the hot tropical climates of India, Vetiver grass is now cultivated in Indonesia, Haiti, Brazil, Angola, and China, as well as its country of origin. It is related to Lemongrass and Citronella, with large tufts of long, narrow, aromatic leaves that can reach 6 feet in length. From an agricultural aspect, the plant's roots are extremely strong and extensive, making the plant's thick root system useful for areas that are prone to soil erosion and flooding by working as a barrier for preventing erosion.

Vetiver can grow up to 1.5 meters high and form clumps as wide. The stems are tall and the leaves are long, thin, and rather rigid. The flowers are brownish-purple. Unlike most grasses, which form horizontally spreading, mat-like root systems, vetiver's roots grow downward, 2 to 4 meters in depth, are finely structured and very strong. Shoots growing from the underground crown make make the plant frost and fire resistant, and allow it to survive heavy grazing pressure.

The roots are also the source of the essential oil of Vetiver, which has a deep, earthy scent reminiscent of a damp forest floor soon after a heavy rainfall. This fragrance often triggers contradictory reactions in different people - some feel that it is comforting, but others seem to think it is smelly. Regardless, Vetiver oil has been shown to have beneficial effect on health. It stimulates the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body and improves circulation and immunity. The oil also eases muscular aches and pains, as well as menstrual cramps. On an emotional level, Vetiver oi calms nervousness, relieves tension and helps induce deep, restful sleep.

In Honduras, this plant is called Valerian, but it is not the same species of plant as the Valerian sold in U.S. drug stores. They do; however, have similar qualities. Both plants are known principally for treating nervous disorders, though for hundreds of years, East Indians used Vetiver to treat fevers, flu, and rheumatism. This plant has tonic, stimulant, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, hepatic, and digestive properties.

VETIVER USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Vetiver grass is grown for many different purposes. The plant helps to stabilize soil and protects it against erosion, but it can also protect fields against pests and weeds. Vetiver has favorable qualities for animal feed. From the roots, oil is extracted by steam distillation and used in cosmetics, aromatherapy, herbal skincare and ayuvedic soaps. Due to its fibrous properties, the plant can also be used for handicrafts, ropes and more. In recent years, vetiver has been used to produce perfumes, creams and soaps. It is used for its antiseptic properties to treat acne and sores.

Vetiver (Khus) is also used as a flavoring agent, usually through khus syrup. Khus syrup is made by adding khus essence to sugar, water and citric acid syrup. Khus essence is a dark green thick syrup made from the roots of khus grass (vetiver grass). It has a woody taste and a scent characteristic of khus. The syrup is used to flavor milkshakes and yogurt drinks like lassi, but can also be used in ice creams, mixed beverages like Shirley Temples and as a dessert topping. Khus syrup does not need to be refrigerated, although khus flavored products may need to be.

The root of Vetiver is sometimes used as a tonic drink that is said to "cool" the body and promote sweating. A tea made from the leaves works well in controlling high blood pressure, palpitations, and insomnia. This plant has also been used to treat muscular pain, muscle spasms, hernia, aging muscles, diabetes, sluggish liver, incontinence, and colic. It also helps improve digestion, encourage menstruation, kill parasites, and, some say Vetiver can cure a hangover. The juice of this plant is used as an effective insect repellent and fungicide. Currently, studies are being performed on Vetiver's effectiveness in treating prostate cancer.

    VETIVER ESSENTIAL OIL

Vetiver is mainly cultivated for the fragrant essential oil distilled from its roots. Due to its excellent fixative properties, vetiver is used widely in perfumes. It is contained in 90-percent of all western perfumes. Vetiver is a more common ingredient in fragrances for men. Vetiver oil is a complex oil, containing over 100 identified components. The oil is amber brown and rather thick. Its odor is described as deep, sweet, woody, smoky, earthy, amber, and balsam. The best quality oil is obtained from 18 to 24 month old roots. The roots are dug up, cleaned, and then dried. Before the distillation, the roots are chopped and soaked in water. The distillation process can take up to 24 hours. After the distillate separates into the essential oil and hydrosol, the oil is skimmed off and allowed to age for a few months to allow some undesirable notes forming during the distillation to dissipate. Like patchouli and sandalwood essential oils, the odor of vetiver develops and improves with aging. The characteristics of the oil can vary significantly depending on where the grass is grown and the climate and soil conditions. The oil distilled in Haiti and Réunion has a more floral quality and is considered of higher quality than the oil from Java, which has a smokier scent. In the north of India, oil is distilled from wild-growing vetiver. This oil is known as khus or khas, and is considered superior to the oil obtained from the cultivated variety. It is rarely found outside of India, as most of it is consumed within the country.

In aromatherapy, Vetiver oil relieves anxiety, exhaustion, nervous tension, stress, and symptoms of menopause. The oil is also used externally to treat many skin diseases and irritations. Vetiver oil is useful for treating joint pain, menstrual cramps, muscle spasms, insomnia, skin problems, low self-esteem, anxiety, and postpartum depression.

    VETIVER OIL THERAPEUTIC EFFECT

Vetiver oil has a number of therapeutic effects. It helps to fight infections and alleviates arthritic and rheumatic pain. It is also quite good for treating muscle spasms and strains. When used on the skin, the oil works to help regulate overactive sebaceous glands while replenishing moisture to drier areas. It can prevent stretch marks and speed healing of minor wounds. Vetiver oil has a calming, soothing effect on the nerves. It may be very helpful for easing the emotional impact of menopause.
