    SPEARMINT HERBAL DESCRIPTION

Spearmint has a long history of use in many parts of the world although it is native to Asia. Greek athletes used bruised mint leaves as an after-bath lotion. In the Middle Ages, mint was important as a cleansing tonic and later was used to help purify drinking water that had turned stale on long ocean voyages. Originally native to the Mediterranean countries, it is now common in many parts of the world. The Bible records that the ancient Pharisees paid tithes to their Temple in Anise, Cumin and Spearmint. The sixteenth century English herbalist Gerard quotes the Roman historian Pliny, "The smell of Mint does stir up the minde and the taste to a greedy desire of meate." Beginning in about the fourteenth century, spearmint was used for whitening teeth, and its distilled oil is still used to flavor toothpaste and chewing gum, although it is not as commonly used as Peppermint. Today Spearmint is used in many products like tea, perfume, soap, toothpaste, mouthwash, gum and cleaning products.

Spearmint is also known as Mentha spicata and seldom, Mentha spicata var. crispa, Common Mint, Garden Mint, Spire Mint, Mackerel Mint, Lamb Mint, and Silver Mint. A hardy perennial mint with bright green serrated leaves, spearmint has served as an important medicinal herb for millennia. Spearmint grows from creeping root-stocks, erect, square stems rise to a height of about 2 feet, bearing very short-stalked, acute-pointed, lance-shaped, wrinkled, bright green leaves, with finely toothed edges and smooth surfaces, the ribs very prominent beneath. The small flowers are densely arranged in whorls or rings in the axils of the upper leaves, forming cylindrical, slender, tapering spikes, pinkish or lilac in color. The little labiate flowers are followed by very few, roundish, minute brown seeds. The taste and odor of the plant are very characteristic.

There are several forms of Spearmint or Garden Mint, the true variety being of bold, upright growth, with fairly large and broad leaves, pointed and sharply serrated (or toothed) at the edges and of a rich, bright green color. Another variety, sometimes sold as Spearmint (M. Cardiaca), is much smaller and less erect in growth, with darker leaves, the whorls of flowers distant and leafy, but possessing the same odor and flavor, and another has comparatively large, broad or rounded leaves. Yet another has soft hairs, but this, though distinct from what is known as Horse Mint, is inferior to the true Spearmint. A form with its leaves slightly crisped is common in gardens under the name of M. crispa.

As an herb, the leaf is used, dried and cut. When the plants are breaking into bloom, the stalks should be cut a few inches above the root on a dry day after the dew has disappeared and before the hot sun has taken any oil from the leaves. It is then dried for culinary use during the winter. All discolored and insect-eaten leaves should be removed and the stems tied loosely into bunches and hung to dry on strings in the usual manner directed for bunched herbs. The bunches should be nearly equal in length and uniform in size to facilitate packing and placed when dry in airtight containers to prevent re-absorption of moisture. The leaves may be stripped from the stems as soon as thoroughly dry and rubbed through a fine sieve or pounded in a mortar and thus powdered, stored in stoppered bottles or airtight tins.

    SPEARMINT ESSENTIAL OIL

Spearmint essential oil is extracted by distillation from the fresh leaves and flowering plant. Spearmint grown for the volatile oil should be gathered in August, when just coming into flower, and taken to a distillery as soon as possible after picking. The leaves need to be kept cool to prevent loss of quality until distillation occurs, otherwise the leaves are apt to heat and ferment, losing color. It is estimated that 350 pounds of Spearmint yield one pound of oil.

Spearmint leaves contain volatile oil, menthol, menthone, d-limonene, neomenthol, tannins and very small amounts of essential oil containing about 50 percent carvone. The main components of this oil are Alpha Pinene, Beta Pinene, Carvone, Cineole, Caryophyllene, Linalool, Limonene, Menthol and Myrcene. Carvone is the chief constituent of Spearmint oil. Also present are Phellandrine and dihydrocarveol acetate. Esters of acetic, butyric and caproic or caprylic acids are also present. (An Ester is a combination of an alcohol with an acid, the combination being associated with the elimination of water. The esters are highly important and in many cases dominant constituents of numerous essential oils, which owe their perfume largely, or in some cases entirely, to the esters contained. Many of the esters are used as flavoring or perfumery agents, and many are among the most important constituents of volatile salts.)

There are several different essential oils known under the name of Spearmint oil, the botanical origin of the plant used for distillation differing with the country in which the plant is grown. In the United States and in this country several varieties of M. viridis are distilled. In Russia the plant distilled is M. verticellata, and in Germany either M. longifolia, or more generally M. aquatica var. crispa - a plant cultivated in Northern Germany, the oil (called there Krausemünzöl) being imported into this country as German Spearmint oil. It appears to be identical with that from M. viridis. Oil of Spearmint is little distilled in England, either German oil or American oil distilled from M. viridis being imported.

SPEARMINT USES, HEALTH BENEFITS, & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    CULINARY & FLAVOR USES

Taken as a tea and added to other herbal mixtures for flavor, Spearmint is also used in some culinary creations. The essential oil and hydrosol have also been used for both culinary and flavoring purposes.

    MEDICINAL USES

Spearmint, like Peppermint, is a digestive remedy. Spearmint is an aromatic herb that is said to improve digestion and relieve gastrointestinal spasms. Spearmint tea is often used for relieving headaches, heartburn, indigestion, gas, and to aid with insomnia. Unlike Peppermint, Spearmint is also diuretic. It may be helpful in reducing fevers and easing respiratory problems and chronic bronchitis. In aromatherapy, inhaling Spearmint essential oil can help relieve stress and lift the mood. In Ayurvedic medicine, Spearmint is considered a cold, pungent herb that increases mental alertness and is more effective than Peppermint in relieving stress.

Recent research has shown that spearmint tea may be used as a treatment for hirsutism in women. Its anti-androgenic properties reduce the level of free testosterone in the blood, while leaving total testosterone and DHEA unaffected. However, administration of spearmint tea to rats causes dose-dependently temporary or permanent negative effects on the reproductive system of the male rat and leads to lipid peroxidation that results in histopathologies in the kidney, liver, and uterine tissues; more research into the toxic effects of the tea in humans is warranted. It can also be used to treat a variety of digestive ailments, including stomachache (as previously mentioned) and gas.

Spearmint has been studied for antifungal activity; its essential oil was found to have some antifungal activity, although less than Oregano. Its essential oil did not show any evidence of mutagenicity in the Ames test. It can have a calming effect when used for insomnia or massages. Spearmint has also been described as having excellent antioxidant activity; its antioxidant activity was found to be comparable to the synthetic BHT. Due both to its antioxidant activity and its common use to season lamb in Indian cuisine, it has been studied as an additive to radiation-processed lamb meat, and was found effective in delaying oxidation of fats and reducing formation of harmful substances, which can be detected using thiobarbituric acid as a reagent.

    The various medicinal properties Spearmint oil possesses are given as follows;
    • Antiseptic: This oil works well as an anti septic for wounds and ulcers, protects them from septic and other infections and helps them heal faster. These anti septic properties are due to presence of components like Menthol, Myrcene and Caryophyllene.

    • Antispasmodic: This property of Essential Oil of Spearmint comes from its component Menthol, which has a relaxing and cooling effect on the nerves and muscles, which helps relax contraction in case of spasms and thereby gives effective relief from spasmodic coughs, aches, pulling sensation and aches in abdominal region and intestines, muscle pulls or cramps, nervous convulsions and even spasmodic cholera.

    • Disinfectant: The antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties of Essential Oil of Spearmint make it a disinfectant. It can help get rid of internal infections and external infections. It is particularly effective in protecting internal wounds and ulcers, like those in stomach, food pipe, intestines etc. from infections. In ancient Greece, it was used to treat infectious diseases like Scabies, Dermatitis, Athlete’s Foot, Syphilis, Gonorrhea and other infectious and transmittable diseases.

    • Carminative: The relaxing properties of Essential Oil of Spearmint induce relaxation in the intestines and muscles of the abdominal region, thereby helping the gases formed in stomach and intestines to pass out using its natural downward passage. This gives a relief from a lot of problems such as uneasiness and restlessness, insomnia, headaches, stomachaches, indigestion, loss of appetite, chest pain, vomiting, cramps and related symptoms.

    • Cephalic: This oil has a relaxing and cooling effect on brain, taking stress away from it. It helps to concentrate. Being a Cephalic, it helps cure headaches and other stress related neuro-problems. This oil is supposed to be good for the health of brain too.

    • Emenagogue: Problems with menstruations, such as irregular periods, obstructed menses and early menopause etc. can be sorted out with the help of this essential oil. It promotes secretion of hormones like estrogen which facilitate menstruation and ensure good uterine and sexual health. This also keeps away menopause and also gives relief from certain symptoms associated with menstruations like nausea, fatigue, pain in the lower abdominal region etc.

    • Insecticide: It is an effective insecticide and keeps away mosquitoes, white ants, ants, flies, moths etc. It can be safely applied on skin to get protection against mosquito bites. The Spearmint oil is sometimes used in mosquito repellant creams, mats, fumigants etc.

    • Restorative: The function of a restorative is to restore health and maintain proper functioning of all the organ systems operating in the body. A restorative also helps repair the damages done to the body and recovery from injuries and wounds. It also helps regain strength after long illness.

    • Stimulant: This essential oil stimulates secretion of hormones, discharge of enzymes, gastric juices and bile and stimulates nerves, brain and blood circulation. This keeps the metabolism activated and functioning properly and also boosts immune system (stimulating blood circulation boosts immunity).

    • Other Benefits: The Essential Oil of Spearmint helps cure asthma and congestion, being a decongestant; gives relief from fever, flatulence, constipation, sinusitis, acne, gum and teeth problems, migraine, stress and depression. Being far lower in menthol content, it can be safely given to the children.

    FRESH SPEARMINT FOR LAMB

When eaten with lamb, use very finely chopped Spearmint in sweetened vinegar, in the form of mint sauce, mint greatly aids the digestion, as it makes the crude, albuminous fibers of the immature meat more digestible. The volatile oil stimulates the digestive system and prevents septic changes within the intestines.

FRESH & DRIED SPEARMINT FOR GREEN PEAS & POTATOES

The fresh sprigs of Spearmint are used to flavor green peas and new potatoes, being boiled with them, and then powdered, dried leaves are used with pea soup and in seasonings. In Germany, the powdered dried mint is often used at the table for dusting upon pea and bean purees, as well as on gravies.

SPEARMINT FOR SALADS, STUFFING & CABBAGE

A grating of mint is introduced sometimes into a potato salad, or into a fowl stuffing, and in Wales it is not unusual to boil mint with cabbage.

    SPEARMINT JELLY

Spearmint Jelly can be used instead of mint sauce, in the same manner as red currant jelly. It may be made by steeping mint leaves in apple jelly, or in one of the various kinds of commercial gelatin. The jelly should be a delicate shade of green. A handful of leaves should color and flavor about half a pint of jelly. Strain the liquid through a jelly bag to remove all particles of mint before allowing to set.

    SPEARMINT VINEGAR

Spearmint Vinegar is made as follows: Fill a jar or bottle with young mint leaves picked from the stalks. Cover with cold vinegar and cork or cover the bottle. Infuse for 14 days, then strain off the vinegar. This vinegar is sometimes employed in making Spearmint Jelly, as follows:
      1 pint of water
      1.25 ounces gelatin
The white and shell of an egg
      1/4 cup of Spearmint Vinegar
      2 teaspoons of Tarragon Vinegar
A bunch of herbs (Your Choice)
      1 onion
      1 carrot
      A stick of celery
      10 peppercorns
      Salt
      1 lemon

    Instructions

Peel the lemon very thinly, slightly whip the white of egg, wash and crush the shell. Put all the ingredients into a pan, strain in the juice of the lemon and whisk over the fire until just on boiling point. Boil up, then draw the pan to the side of the fire and simmer very gently for 20 minutes. Strain through a jelly bag until clear. Put into a mold to set. If liked, finely chopped mint may be added to the jelly after straining it, or more mint can be used and no Tarragon Vinegar.

    SPEARMINT PUNCH

To make Mint Punch: Pick a quart of fresh mint leaves, then wash and dry them by shaking them in a clean kitchen towel. Put them into a large jug and mash them with a wooden spoon till soft, when cover with freshly boiled water and infuse for ten minutes. Strain, cool, then set on ice till required. Add two cups of chilled grape juice and strained lemon juice to taste. Sweeten with sugar, stir till sugar is dissolved and then add a quart of ginger ale. Fill each tumbler to one-third with cracked ice and fill up with the punch. Spearmint is also the basis of Mint Julep and Mint-water, the cordial distilled from the plant.

    SPEARMINT DOSAGE INFORMATION

For best results, read and follow product label directions. The properties of Spearmint oil resemble those of Peppermint, being stimulant, carminative and antispasmodic, but its effects are less powerful, and it is less used than Peppermint, though it is better adapted for children's maladies.

From 2 to 5 drops may be given on sugar, or from 1/2 to 1 teaspoonful of spirit of Spearmint, with 2 tablespoonsful of water.

Spearmint oil is added to many compounds on account of its carminative properties, and because its taste is more pleasant and less strong than Peppermint. A distilled water of Spearmint will relieve hiccups and flatulence as well as the giddiness of indigestion.

For infantile trouble generally, the sweetened infusion is an excellent remedy, and is also a pleasant beverage in fevers, inflammatory diseases, etc. Make the infusion by pouring a pint of boiling water on an ounce of the dried herb; the strained-off liquid is taken in doses of a wineglassful (2 fluid ounces) or less. It is considered a specific in allaying nausea and vomiting and will relieve the pain of colic.

A homeopathic tincture prepared from the fresh plant in flower has been found serviceable in strangury (a frequent need to urinate when the bladder is largely empty or with little urine production, produced by spasmodic muscular contractions), gravel (a deposit of small calculous concretions in the kidneys and urinary bladder), and as a local application in painful hemorrhoids. Its principal employment is for its febrifuge and diuretic virtues.

    SPEARMINT SAFETY & INTERACTION INFORMATION

Spearmint herb is widely used and known to be safe. However, care should be taken in usage of essential oils which are concentrated. Always follow product labels.

Use Peppermint, not Spearmint, for gallbladder complaints.

Spearmint oil has no threats, but being an emenagogue, it should be avoided during pregnancy.

Aromatic and Sweet Herbal Dietary Supplement Spearmint leaves are much milder in effect than peppermint and are used mainly as a great tasting beverage tea and as a culinary herb. Spearmint is a perennial herb that is grown in temperate climates worldwide. The leaves are harvested when its pale purple flowers come into bloom from July to September. Most spearmint leaf is distilled to make essential oil and a small amount is dried for use as tea. We select high oil spearmint leaf that meets pharmacopoeial medicinal grade herb standards. How does it taste? Pleasantly aromatic and sweet. In contrast to peppermint, spearmint does not produce a cooling sensation. Children often find it to be more pleasant than peppermint. Combines well with honey or lemon.
