    SHEA NUT DESCRIPTION

Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii) is a slightly yellowish or ivory-colored fat product of the oil by cold pressing extraction of the fruits (nuts or seeds) of the Karite Nut tree (also known as the African Shea Tree; Mangifolia tree; Vitellaria paradoxa). These trees are found in the savannahs of central Africa. It is followed by a full refining process. During the pressing of the butter, a liquid fraction appears as Shea Oil which offers an exceptional skin feel.

The traditional method of preparing unrefined Shea Butter consists of the following steps:
    • Separating / Cracking: The outer pulp of the fruit is removed. When dry, the nut, which is the source of Shea Butter, must be separated from the outer shell. This is a social activity, traditionally done by Women Elders and young girls who sit on the ground and break the shells with small rocks.

    • Crushing: To make the Shea nuts into butter, they must be crushed. Traditionally, this is done with mortars and pestles. It requires lifting the pestles and grinding the nuts into the mortars to crush the nuts so they can be roasted.

    • Roasting: The crushed nuts are then roasted in huge pots over open, wood fires. The pots must be stirred constantly with wooden paddles so the butter does not burn. The butter is heavy and stirring it is hot, smoky work, done under the sun. This is where the slight, smoky smell of traditional shea butter originates.

    • Grinding: The roasted shea nuts are ground into a smoother paste, water is gradually added and the paste is mixed well by hand.
    • Separating the Oils: The paste is kneaded by hand in large basins and water is gradually added to help separate out the butter oils. As they float to the top, the butter oils, which are in a curd state, are removed and excess water squeezed out. The butter oil curds are then melted in large open pots over slow fires. A period of slow boiling will remove any remaining water, by evaporation.

    • Collecting & Shaping: The Shea Butter, which is creamy or golden yellow at this point, is ladled from the top of the pots and put in cool places to harden. Then it is formed into balls.

    • Industrially, a mechanical sheller such as the Universal Nut Sheller may be used, although controversy over its usability with shea nuts is reported in that article. The refined butter may be extracted with chemicals such as hexane, or by clay filtering.

    CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

A classification system for Shea Butter has been suggested, separating it into five grades: A (raw or unrefined, extracted using water), B (refined), C (highly refined and extracted with solvents such as hexane), D (lowest uncontaminated grade), E (with contaminants). Commercial grades are A, B, C. The color of raw (grade A) butter ranges from cream (like whipped butter) to grayish yellow, and it has a nutty aroma which is removed in the other grades. Grade C is pure white[citation needed] While the level of vitamin content can be affected by refining, up to 95 percent of vitamin content can remain in refined grades (i.e. grade C) of shea butter while reducing contamination levels to non-detectable levels.

    COMPOSITION & PROPERTIES

Shea Butter extract is a complex fat that contains, besides many nonsaponifiable components (substances that cannot be fully converted into soap by treatment with alkali), the following fatty acids:
    • Oleic Acid (40 to 60%)
    • Stearic Acid (20 to 50%)
    • Linoleic Acid (3 to 11%)
    • Palmitic Acid (2 to 9%)
    • Linolenic Acid (less than1%)
    • Arachidic Acid (less than 1%)

Shea is well known to assist cutaneous dryness, dermatitis and dermatoses, eczema, solar erythema and burns. Shea butter melts at body temperature and absorbs rapidly into the skin without leaving a greasy feeling.

Shea Butter contains vitamins A and E, and cinnamic acid. Cinnamic acid provides protection against ultraviolet rays. Using Shea Butter cream daily can reduce sun exposure to the face and body, and offer a natural barrier of protection against smoke, smog and other environmental pollutants in the air, which all contribute to aging skin. Shea Butter can help prevent sun allergies and promote cell regeneration and capillary circulation. It also has been shown to have anti-inflammatory capabilities.

Shea Butter is becoming increasingly popular in the natural bodycare and cosmetic industries for good reason. It has been used for centuries in Africa for its moisturizing and healing properties, where it has been used to protect and condition skin which has been damaged by the sun and wind.

    GRADES OF SHEA BUTTER:

The Shea Butter sold by Mountain Rose Herbs is completely raw, unrefined and having a thick and often nutty aroma. Many companies use bleaches, deodorizers, or chemicals to alter the scent and appearance of Shea Butter. It is important to not purchase Shea Butter that has been altered in this way, as these processing methods deplete the product of its healing and medicinal properties, and also destroy the vitamins and minerals naturally present in Shea Butter. Shea Butter naturally has a cream color, and a distinctive scent which may not appeal to some. However, after applying Shea Butter to the skin, the scent lessens in strength. If you have been purchasing Shea Butter without the characteristic scent, then you have not been purchasing good quality Shea Butter.

    EXTRACTION METHODS:

The majority of Shea Butter is prepared by hand in small villages across western Africa. Shea Butter processing is historically done by village women, and the method which they use has been passed down to them through their elders. The Shea Butter sold by Mountain Rose Herbs is processed in the traditional way in a village in Ghana . Because of the money earned by the women, the village has been able to afford basic necessities, such as schools, clinics, and clean water. To produce Shea Butter, the nuts are first picked from the Shea Tree and cracked, grilled, and pounded by hand. They are then boiled in water until the oil rises to the surface of the kettle. This oil is then scooped into gourds, where it is allowed to cool. Once that the oil has cooled, it thickens into a butter-like consistency. This Shea Butter is then packaged and shipped, providing us with a pure, high quality, and genuine product.

    BENEFITS:

Shea Butter is naturally rich in Vitamins A, E, and F, as well as a number of other vitamins and minerals. Vitamins A and E help to soothe, hydrate, and balance the skin. They also provide skin collagen which assists with wrinkles and other signs of ageing. Vitamin F contains essential fatty acids, and helps protect and revitalize damaged skin and hair. Shea Butter is an intense moisturizer for dry skin, and is a wonderful product for revitalizing dull or dry skin on the body or scalp. It promotes skin renewal, increases the circulation, and accelerates wound healing. It is also beneficial for the treatment of many different conditions, such as:
    • Dry skin
    • Stretch marks
    • Itchy skin, skin rashes, Eczema, and Dermatitis
    • Sunburn
    • Small skin wounds
    • Damaged skin
    • Rough skin (such as on feet)
    • Insect bites
    • Muscle aches, fatigue, and tension
    • Wrinkles and signs of aging
    • Chapped skin from cold weather
    • Dry or over processed hair
    • Diaper rash
    • Skin allergies
    • Frost bite

In addition, Shea Butter offers a low level of UV protection (approximately SPF-6), and may be incorporated into natural sunscreen recipes. Because of its soothing nature, anti-inflammatory and rejuvenating effects, it is a perfect ingredient to incorporate into your bodycare recipes and skin care regime. It is also wonderful to use in the summer as a moisturizer before and after sun exposure to reduce possibility of the skin peeling or becoming dried out.

    USING SHEA BUTTER:

At room temperature, Shea Butter is semi-soft and solid. However, the melting point of Shea Butter is 89 to 95°F and it will melt readily once applied to the skin. Since Shea Butter absorbs so quickly, it immediately relieves dry and irritated skin. There are many different uses for Shea Butter, below are some of the ways in which Shea Butter may be used:
    • May be easily incorporated into Lotions, Creams, and Body Butters.
    • Add a spoonful to your bath water for a luxurious and healing experience. Especially helpful for those with dry or itchy skin, or sore muscles. Try adding Lavender or Chamomile essential oil as well, or an herbal infusion made from soothing herbs.
    • In massage, Shea Butter is beneficial for overexerted muscles or for dry, chapped skin. If the odor is too strong, warm the butter slightly over a double boiler, and add essential oils.
    • In soaps, Shea Butter has a conditioning effect. Try incorporating Shea Butter into your handmade soap recipes.
    • Massaged into the scalp for dry scalp symptoms and to stimulate hair growth.
    • Use during pregnancy to keep the skin supple, and to prevent stretch marks. It may also be used after giving birth to reduce stretch marks.

    PRECAUTIONS:

Those with serious or persistent skin problems, such as eczema, should consult a health care practitioner or dermatologist before using Shea Butter. Not recommended by those with nut allergies.

SHEA NUT USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

For thousands of years, Shea Butter has been used for a multitude of skin ailments including dermatitis, cracks, crevices, eczema, rashes, severely dry skin, psoriasis, and skin ulcers. It also works well as a balm for minor burns, muscle aches, and rheumatism. Shea Butter also helps wounds heal more quickly, lessen the effects of scars, and daily use can help prevent stretch marks. Massage therapists prefer Shea Butter when giving massages because of its non-greasy feel and emollient properties.

Since Shea contains essential fatty acids, it makes a great conditioner and moisturizer for skin and hair. That is why this butter is so commonly used in soaps, lotions, and skin creams. In addition to daily skin hydration, shea is also a useful treatment for dry, tight, and cracked skin. Shea butter is mainly used in cosmetics, such as lip gloss moisturizer creams and emulsions, and hair conditioners for dry and brittle hair. It is also used by soap makers, typically in small amounts (5 to 7 percent of the oils in the recipe), because of its property of leaving a small amount of oil in the soap.

In Africa, Shea Butter is used for cooking oil, as a waterproofing wax, for hairdressing, for candle-making, and also as an ingredient in medicinal ointments. It is also used by makers of traditional African percussion instruments to increase the durability of wood (such as carved djembe shells), dried calabash gourds, and leather tuning traps.

Shea Butter is used as a base for medicinal ointments. Some of the isolated chemical constituents are reported to have anti-inflammatory, emollient and humectant properties. Shea Butter has been used as a sunblocking lotion and has a limited capacity to absorb ultraviolet radiation.

In Ghana, Shea Butter, locally known as nkuto (Akan) or nku (Ga) is used as lotion to protect the skin during the dry Harmattan season. In Nigeria Shea Butter is used for the management of sinusitis and relief of nasal congestion. It is also massaged into joints and other parts of the body where pain is experienced. Many producers of Shea Butter also claim it is useful in treating:
    • Sunburns.
    • Mild skin rashes.
    • Diaper rash.
    • Minor burns.
    • Mild skin irritations.
    • Stretch marks, such as those associated with pregnancy.
    • Itchy skin.
    • Dry scalp.
    • Eczema.
    • Dry or damaged hair.
    • Shaving or razor irritation.
    • Skin aging.
    • Superficial wounds.
    • Calluses and rough patches.

    SHEA NUT DOSAGE INFORMATION

Shea Butter and Shea Nut Oil comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For best results, read and follow product label directions. Use from 3 to 20 percent in creams and lotions, soaps and balms, or 100 percent as a moisturizing serum or massage oil. There is no doubt that shea products, namely butters, can make the skin more supple and smooth. Apply body butter to your skin in areas that are especially susceptible to dryness, like the elbows and knees, for long-lasting hydration.

The butter from Shea is available in its raw or cold pressed form, as well as in refined and highly refined forms. You can use it alone, but it is also an ingredient in dozens of health and beauty products. In its pure form, Shea has a bland, but not unpleasant, scent. Other scents may be added to the raw form in order to make it more enjoyable to use, although it works very well without them. Shea Butter works well when blended in:
    • Hand and body lotion.
    • Baby lotion.
    • Body wash.
    • Bar soap.
    • Liquid hand soap.
    • Body scrub.
    • In-shower moisturizing lotions or creams.
    • Bath soaks.
    • Foot creams.
    • Massage and bottle oil.
    • Lip balm.
    • Shampoo.
    • Hair conditioner.
    • Leave-in conditioner.
    • Hair serum.
    • Body sprays.
