ROSEMARY HERBAL & ESSENTIAL OIL DESCRIPTION

Rosemary is also known as Rosmarinus officinalis, Romero, and Dew of the Sea. The popular Rosemary bush is native to the coastal Mediterranean region but is cultivated throughout the world. As an herb, Rosemary's uses as a culinary and medicinal ingredient are well documented. The pungent herb has long been favored for its stimulating, medicinal effects, and ancient healers would often turn to Rosemary for its memory-enhancing qualities. Rosemary was used by the Ancients, both as a food herb and medicine, and in fact, Rosemary is one of the oldest known medicinal herbs. It was most commonly used to enhance mental functions. The Greeks used it to improve memory. In medieval times, Europeans were said to have used the herb for mental acuteness and increased intelligence, but it was also used as a cardiac and kidney tonic. Rosemary increases blood flow to the muscles, head, brain, and is effective in ameliorating liver congestion and inflammation.

Rosemary is an aromatic evergreen, bushy mint that grows to a height of about three feet (one meter). It bears narrow, thick, needle-like green leaves and pale blue to violet flowers.

The leaves and the essential oil distilled form the leaves are used in herbal medicine. Food manufacturers add rosemary to meats and sauces as an antioxidant and stabilizer. The herb is also used to make liqueurs, such as Benedictine and Danziger Goldwasser.

ROSEMARY USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Rosemary essential oil is also highly prized for use in aromatherapy and is in high demand. Long thought to be a rejuvenating tonic for both the body and mind, Rosemary oil aids mental clarity and stimulates the central nervous system. In addition to helping the heart and liver, Rosemary also helps reduce high blood pressure. Other common uses include the treatment of "nerves", digestive disorders, gas, palsy, weak memory, dizziness, migraine, dandruff, jaundice, consumption, and menstrual pains. Rosemary can also stimulate hair growth, restore appetite, and improve sight. The spicy essential oil is also often used in bath and body products, such as soaps, shampoos and bath salts.

Rosemary is an antioxidant, antiseptic, and antispasmodic. Rosemary is a key herb in European herbal medicine. For centuries, Rosemary has been used to treat arthritis, baldness, headaches, stomach upset, pains, strains, cuts, scrapes, and bruises. Contemporary scientific research suggests that Rosemary may be useful for Alzheimer's disease. The phytochemicals in Rosemary may prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical that allows neurons within the brain to communicate with each other. Several laboratory studies suggest that Rosemary contains compounds that prevent carcinogenic chemicals from binding to and inducing mutations in DNA and may be helpful in treating or preventing Cancer. For circulatory problems, the camphor content in finely chopped Rosemary or essential oil of Rosemary to bath water helps stimulate blood circulation the skin. Rosemary may be helpful in treating eczema. The increased circulation in the skin after application of Rosemary may carry away inflammatory chemicals. For people having difficulties with indigestion, Rosemary can help prevent abdominal cramps. In treating irritable bowel syndrome, Rosemary relieves intestinal cramps and spasms by stimulating the release of bile that helps digest fat. It also relieves bloating and gas. Women suffering from menstrual cramps may discover that the antioxidant compounds in Rosemary may prevent uterine spasms. In treating yeast infections, Rosemary stops growth of yeast and helps remove yeast cells from the lining of the urinary tract.

Researchers at the University of Catania in Italy have shown that rosemary antioxidant extract helps protect the individual components of skin cells which may prevent age-related skin damage. The study also showed that Rosemary antioxidant extract was shown to safeguard a protective protein in the skin called HSP70. The role of this protein is to reduce the damage that stress, free radicals, and other toxins can do to skin cells. Rosemary antioxidant extract is known to help strengthen dermal capillaries, so it is found in many aftercare products including popular tattoo aftercare balms and salves. It is also a wonderful antioxidant extract for all cosmetic products, juices, and soft drinks. It helps to stabilize the shelf life of products and therefore is a wonderful organic additive with a plethora of uses.

    THERAPEUTIC EFFECT

    TYPICAL PREPARATIONS

Teas and tinctures are the most common typical medicinal preparations, however it is most popularly used in cooking and flavoring of foods. The essential oil is used in aromatherapy but should not be taken internally. The extract is rapidly gaining popularity for its powerful antioxidative capabilities for those wanting to get away from conventional additives. To create this wonderful antioxidant, whole fresh Rosemary leaf is put through a supercritical CO2 extraction process. This method helps to maintain the integrity of the base constituents of the oil and produces a highly concentrated finished product. The extract is then infused with organic olive oil to help increase the solubility when blended. The liquid antioxidant can be used in cosmetics or as a preservative for a variety of food products. Please refer to your formulation or recipe for the quantity asked for.

Essential and resin oils are volatile fragrant materials extracted from the root, bark, wood, seed, fruit, leaf or flower of a single plant. Essential oils contain the odor, taste and medicinal properties of the plant itself - but in very concentrated form with no base oil, alcohol, water or dilutants added.

Steam distillation and cold pressing are used to extract the essential oil from the plant. To produce the oil, the needle-like leaves must be harvested before the plant blossoms, and then dried. More than 200 pounds of leaves are used to produce about a quart of oil by steam distillation.

    BLENDING ROSEMARY WITH OTHER OILS

Rosemary blends well with: germanium, lemongrass, olibanum, lavender, lavandin, citronella, thyme, basil, peppermint, labdanum, elemi, cedarwood, petitgrain, and cinnamon.

The aromatherapy benefits are clarifying and invigorating.

    ROSEMARY SAFETY & INTERACTION INFORMATION

Precautions include women who have heavy periods should avoid excessive use of rosemary, since it stimulate menstrual flow. The camphor, thymol and terpineol in Rosemary are highly stimulating.

Pregnant women should not use the herb as either an essential oil or a tea preparation, as either can cause premature labor. Small amounts of Rosemary used in cooking, however, are safe for pregnant women and for women who have heavy periods.

Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing mothers, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known. Keep these precautions in mind when using Rosemary oil around others.

Those prone to asthma may be bothered by Rosemary's strong scent, and the active ingredients can also cause seizure in epileptics.

Rosemary oil may cause skin irritation if not diluted properly. Taking excessive amounts of Rosemary oil internally can cause fatal poisonings. Rosemary oil taken orally, can irritate the intestinal tract, stomach, and kidneys.

SPECIFIC CAUTIONS - SAFETY INFORMATION FOR ROSEMARY OIL

Rosemary oil should not be used during pregnancy and is unsuitable for people with epilepsy or high blood pressure. Essential oils are very potent and should always be used sparingly and in conjunction with a reliable reference.
