    PINE NEEDLE DESCRIPTION

    SCOTCH PINE TREE

Also known as Scotch and Norwegian Pine, Pinus sylvestris is an evergreen coniferous tree originating in northern Europe and Asia, ranging from Scotland, Ireland and Portugal in the west, east to eastern Siberia, south to the Caucasus Mountains, and as far north as well inside the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia, as well as the eastern United States and the Baltic. This majestic tree can grow to a height of 130 feet and bears brown cones, yellow-orange flowers and blue-green needles. The lifespan is normally 150 to 300 years, with the oldest recorded specimens in Sweden and Norway just over 700 years of age.

For hundreds of years, Native American tribes used the inner bark of Pine as a poultice or dressing for wounds and sores. The Choctaw Indians used it to treat boils and ulcers, and the Alabama Indians boiled the inside bark of Pine saplings in water then drank the liquid to treat diarrhea. The gum of Pine was boiled and drunk for sore throat, colds and consumption.

The essential oil is steam distilled from the needles and is clear in color.
