MoonDragon's Aromatherapy Information
PALMAROSA ESSENTIAL OIL OVERVIEW
Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii; Indian Geranium) oil has a sweet floral smell of rose and is pale yellow in color. It is a wild growing herbaceous green and straw-colored grass with long slender stems with terminal flowering tops and fragrant grassy leaves. The grass is harvested before the flowers appear and the highest yield is obtained when the grass is fully dried. There are two varieties of grass - motia and sofia; however, motia yields the better quality oil which has a finer aroma.
Although Palmarosa oil is not among the most popular oils used in the United States, in Asia (where Palmarosa grass grows wild and freely) the oil is highly regarded for its harmonizing effect on both the body and soul. It takes more than 154 pounds of dried, sweet grass to yield roughly one quart of yellow Palmarosa essential oil, extracted through steam distillation. The oil's delicate rose-like scent is due to its high geraniol concentration. This aroma seems to have a calming effect, particularly in times of stress and anger. It is an ingredient of soaps, perfumes and cosmetics, and is used in the flavoring of tobacco. Historically, Palmarosa was used medicinally to treat cellulite, varicose veins, sluggish circulation, acne, wrinkles, and dry skin. The oil is antiseptic, antiviral, bactericidal, cytophlactic, and digestive.
Applied topically, the oil is a good nutrient for your skin. It stimulates cell growth and regulates sebum production, supporting the regeneration of damaged tissue. Because Palmarosa has antibacterial and antiseptic qualities, it is beneficial for oily skin and acne. Palmarosa oil blends well with other oils and is a good moisturizer, especially for mature skin. The oil is also used in Ayurvedic medicine. Its antispasmodic properties help to promote muscle relaxation, as well as reduce muscle pain.
