NIAOULI ESSENTIAL OIL
(Melaleuca Viridiflora / Melaleuca Quinquenervia)
A MEMBER OF THE ALLSPICE FAMILY
The essential oil of Niaouli is extracted and distilled from the fresh leaves of small to medium sized evergreen trees of the allspice family, Myrtaceae. A member of the Myrtle family, Niaouli (Melaleuca viridiflora / Melaleuca quinquenervia - both are considered Niaouli) is commonly known as Broad-Leaved Paperbark or the Paper Bark tree and is a close relative of the Cajeput tree. M. quinquenervia is originally native to New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea and coastal Eastern Australia, from Botany Bay in New South Wales northwards, into Queensland and the Northern Territory of Australia. M. viridiflora is a small tree native to woodlands, swamps and streams of monsoonal Northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. M. viridiflora is now cultivated in Malaysia and the Philippines.
M. quinquenervia has become naturalized in the Everglades in Florida, where it is considered a serious weed by the USDA. Plants distributed in south-eastern Florida in 1900 under the name of Melaleuca viridiflora have been subsequently identified as Melaleuca quinquenervia. The Broad-Leaved Paperbark grows as a spreading tree up to 25 to 60 feet high, with a trunk covered by a thick white, beige and grey papery bark. The grey-green leathery dull leaves are ovate to obovate in shape, arranged alternately and are 2 to 4 inches long and 1/4 to 1 inch wide. The cream or white bottlebrush-like flowers appear from late spring to early autumn (September to March in Australia). These cylindrical brushes are 2 to 3 inches long and 1 inch wide borne at or near the end of the branchlets. They are followed by small woody seed pods containing many tiny seeds which are released annually. The flowers serve as a rich source of nectar for other organisms, including fruit bats, a wide range of insect and bird species. M. viridiflora leaves are thick, broadly elliptic, aromatic and 2.5 to 7.5 inches long. Flowers are cream, yellow, yellow-green or red spikes, 2 to 4 inches long. Fruits are woody capsules containing numerous fine seed. The bark is papery.
