    MIMOSA DESCRIPTION

    MIMOSA HERBAL OVERVIEW

Mimosa is often grown for its curiosity value. Young Mimosa leaves exhibit a very unusual quality - The fern-like leaves are so sensitive that they close up, fold and droop when touched or exposed to flame, and usually re-open within minutes. Legend has it that this reaction enchanted a Chinese emperor so much that he immediately decided to grant the French botanist who brough him a Mimosa plant unrestricted access to his imperial gardens.

Today, the Mimosa continues to delight. The leaves, which are made up of many small, tapered leaflets, give Mimosa, or silk, trees a feathery appearance. Mimosa trees prefer warm, dry climates. The Mimosa has prickly stems and bears small fluffy cotton ball-shaped bright yellow or pink flowers in summer.

The Mimosa scabrella and Mimosa Tenuiflora (Tepezcohuite) species have different qualities, but are useful in medicine as well. The Tepezchuite, in particular, is called "Skin Tree" and was used for skin renewal since before the Spanish conquest. The Mayan civilization highly regarded Mimosa bark due to its regenerative qualities on living tissue. Mimosa pudica has anthelminthic, antibacterial, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-pyretic, anti-tussive, bactericidal, sedative, relaxing, contraceptive, diuretic, emetic, expectorant, and tonic properties.

MIMOSA USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Mimosa Tenuiflora bark is used to relax the mind, and relieve depression, mental distress, irritability, severe palpitations, and amnesia. It is a mood enhancer and improves circulation of the blood. Some believe Mimosa can reduce the onset of baldness. Due to its ability to promote healthy cell growth, Tepezcohuite is used in shampoos, creams, capsules, and soaps. In Ayurvedic and Unani medicine,

Mimosa pudica root is used to treat bilious fevers, piles, jaundice, leprosy, dysentery, vaginal and uterine complaints, inflammations, burning sensation, fatigue, asthma, leucoderma, and blood diseases. In Western medicine, Mimosa root is used for treating insomnia, irritability, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), menorrhagia, hemorrhoids, skin wounds, and diarrhea. It is also used to treat whooping cough and fevers in children, and there is some evidence to suggest Mimosa is effective in relieving the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

Mimosa essential oil is obtained from the blossoms. Mimosa oil has an effect similar to that of a warm spring morning. The viscous, dark yellow oil has a gentle, warm, soothing scent that is a mixture of bananas and violets. The effect of Mimosa oil is calming to the body and mind, helping to relax and soothe the spirits and ease tension. It is beneficial for the treatment of nervousness, high blood pressure, menstrual cramps and skin ailments (such as eczema), as well as for easing stress, depression and mild anxiety. In addition, Mimosa oil is an excellent skin softener and possesses an anti-inflammatory effect that may reduce inflammation, ease skin irritations and can help to moisturize, nourish and protect your sensitive, dry, red skin. The comforting scent can relieve cramping, muscle aches, sleep disorders, and slow down a racing pulse.

    MIMOSA DOSAGE INFORMATION

Mimosa comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. Due to its toxic nature, it is best to consult with a health practitioner regarding the use of Mimosa in the treatment of your condition. For best results, read and follow product label directions.

Extra Tip: To liquefy Mimosa oil that has become thick, resinous and sticky, add a little ethyl alcohol (100 proof vodka) and mix well. This thins the oil so it can be dispensed and applied more easily.

    MIMOSA SAFETY & INTERACTION INFORMATION

All parts of the Mimosa plant are toxic. Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing. Due to its toxicity, it is best to consult with your health care provider before using Mimosa. Safety in young children or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.

Hexane, a toxic chemical solvent, is used to extract Mimosa oil. Sometimes traces of the residue may be found in the oil, so be sure to request oils that have been thoroughly checked for residue. To further guarantee your safety, use Mimosa oil only externally in very small amounts. The oil should never be used internally. In addition, always dilute Mimosa oil, and any essential oil, with a carrier oil before using.
