CORIANDER HERBAL & ESSENTIAL OIL DESCRIPTION

    CORIANDER SEED & LEAVES

Coriander is also known as Coriander sativum, Coriander Leaf, Chinese Parsley, Coriandri Fructus, Koriander, Kustumburi.

Coriander is the seed of a plant sometimes called Chinese parley. The herbal leaves are actually known as Cilantro, but they both ease indigestion and prevent wound infections. Cilantro leaf has been used medicinally for over 5000 years, and is known outside of North America as coriander leaf. It is native to Europe and Western Asia, but it has been naturalized and widely cultivated in North America. It is a historically prolific herb, having been brought to Britain by the Romans, who then brought it to North America. Spanish conquistadors introduced it to Peru and Mexico, where it spread north to the Americas. References to coriander can be found in Sanskrit writings as far back as 5000 B.C.E., and the seeds were found in Egyptian tombs as far back as the 21st Dynasty. In Egypt, Coriander seeds were found in Pharaoh’s tombs, and it is thought they were put there to prevent indigestion in the afterlife. This plant contains an antioxidant that prevents animal fats from turning rancid. Ancient Romans used both the leaves and seeds to preserve meats, and to prevent meat-spoiling bacteria and fungi. The same substances in Cilantro prevent infected wounds.

Nowadays, coriander is used as a flavoring agent in pharmaceuticals, alcohol (vermouth, bitters, and gin), frozen dairy desserts, candy, baked goods, gelatins, and various meat products.

    CORIANDER ESSENTIAL OIL

In Morocco, its homeland, Coriander has long been used both as a seasoning herb and as a remedy for physical pain and digestive complaints. The oil is obtained from the seeds of the Coriander-Cilantro plant (Cilantro refers more specifically to the leaves). Because of its bitter properties, Coriander oil is a very effective natural remedy for gastrointestinal complaints, including a nervous stomach and constipation. For these conditions, massaging the oil into the abdomen is helpful. Also, the oil's antispasmodic properties make it useful for relieveing bloating and painful colic. Burning Coriander oil in an aromatherapy lamp will purify indoor air, helping to alleviate the symptoms of infectious respiratory tract ailments. Washes with diluted Coriander oil are beneficial in promoting wound healing and have a mild disinfectant effect. In addition, the oil stimulates circulation and helps reduce muscle aches and stiffness in the joints. Finally, Coriander's spicy, slightly pungent scent can help eliminate fatgue, improve concentration and relieve tension headaches.

Coriander is the seed of the herb most Americans know as cilantro. It is native to Europe and Western Asia, but it has been naturalized and widely cultivated in North America. References to coriander can be found in Sanskrit writings as far back as 5000 B.C.E., and the seeds were found in Egyptian tombs as far back as the 21st Dynasty. Dioscides believed that ingesting it could heighten a man's sexual potency. In fact, many cultures believed it to be an aphrodisiac, and it was a main component in love potions up through the Renaissance. Coriander seed has been used to settle upset stomach in herbal traditions around the world, it is often combined with cardamom, caraway, fennel, and/or anise. Traditional Chinese medicine used the seeds, usually in the form of a infusion, as an aromatic carminative, and used as decoction and gargle for toothaches. The Chinese thought that anyone who consumes coriander over their lives would be rewarded with immortality. Nowadays, coriander is used as a flavoring agent in pharmaceuticals, alcohol (vermouth, bitters, and gin), frozen dairy deserts, candy, baked goods, gelatins, and various meat products. Medicinally, coriander seed is best suited for relief of tension in the upper abdomen, such as flatulence, cramps, and bloating.

Cilantro is the leaf of the herb most the world knows as coriander. Its use can be traces back over 5000 years. Hippocrates used it as an aromatic stimulant. The Egyptians used it as a tea for both urinary tract infections and for headaches. The Romans took it to Britain, and the British took it to North America. Spanish conquistadors introduced it to Peru and Mexico, where it spread north to the Americas. Cilantro has been used to settle upset stomach in Latin American herbal healing traditions, much as other traditions use coriander, fennel, or dill. Cilantro is more than just tasty, it's also antimicrobial. The essential oils in cilantro are especially effective against Listeria bacteria, and also slow the growth of E. coli and Salmonella. Combining cilantro with onion or garlic increases its ability to keep food fresh. It is also thought to be an aphrodisiac, and is mentioned as such in Tales of the Arabian Nights over 1000 years ago.

Native to the Mediterranean and Middle East regions, coriander is cultivated in Europe, Indochina, North Africa, and the United States. Coriander's delicate young leaves are widely used to flavor salads, sausages, curries, pastries, liqueurs, and confectionery. Records of the use of coriander date to 5000 BC. The Romans used it to flavor bread. Coriander leaves are essential in Thailand for green curry paste. In Vietnam and Southern China, Coriander is used the way the West uses parsley, as a topping for innumerable dishes. Like parsely, Coriander is best uncooked or only lighly cooked. Zhoug, a Yemeni spice paste used as a relish, bread dip and condiment, makes heavy use of Coriander leaves and fruit, as well as chiles, garlic, cardamom black pepper, cumin, lemon juice and olive oil. Mexican salsas benefit from coriander, as do many Latin American dishes.
