CITRONELLA HERBAL & ESSENTIAL OIL DESCRIPTION

Citronella has a volatile oil that works great as an aromatic insect repellant. It is native to southeast Asia and is grown commercially in Sri Lanka, India, Burma, and Indonesia.

Citronella oil is one of the essential oils obtained from the leaves and stems of different species of Cymbopogon (Lemongrass), primarily obtained from the leaves and stem of the Cymbopogon winterianus (Java) or Cymbopogon nardus (Ceylon) plant. Both types probably originated from Mana Grass of Sri Lanka, which according to Finnemore (1962) occurs today in two wild forms - Cymbopogon nardus var. linnae (typicus) and C. nardus var. confertiflorus. Neither wild form is known to be used for distillation to any appreciable extent.
    • Ceylon Type: It is obtained from Cymbopogon nardus rendle. It consists of 18 to 20 percent geraniol, 9 to 11 percent limonene, 7 to 11 percent methyl isoeugenol, 6 to 8 percent citronellol and 5 to 15 percent citronellal. Cymbopogon nardus is a perennial of the Poaceae grass family originating in tropical Asia. It cannot be eaten because of its unpalatable nature. It is considered an invasive species that renders pastureland useless as cattle will starve even in its abundance. The essential oils are extracted from the aerial parts, and are applied topically as an insect repellent. It also has very important medicinal value.

    • Java Type: It is obtained from Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt. It consists of 32 to 45 percent citronellal, 11 to 13 percent geraniol, 3 to 8 percent geranyl acetate and 1 to 4 percent limonene. The higher proportions of geraniol and citronellal in the Java type make it a better source for perfumery derivatives. The name Cymbopogon winterianus is given to this selected variety to commemorate Mr. Winter, an important oil distiller of Ceylon, who first cultivated and distilled the Maha Pangeri type of citronella in Ceylon.

The properties of Citronella oil make it a very diversified oil which can be used in numerous ways. The oil is used extensively as a source of perfumery chemicals such as citronellal, citronellol, and geraniol. These chemicals find extensive use in soap, candles and incense, perfumery, cosmetic and flavoring industries throughout the world. At present, the world production of Citronella oil is approximately 4,000 tonnes. The main producers are China and Indonesia - producing 40 percent of the world's supply. The oil is also produced in Taiwan, Guatamala, Honduras, Brazil, Sri Lanka, India, Argintina, Ecuador, Jamaica, Madagascar, Mexico, and South Africa. The market for natural Citronella oil has been eroded by chemicals synthesized from turpentine derived from conifers. However, natural Citronella oil and its derivatives are preferred by the perfume industry.

    OTHER LEMON-SCENTED PLANTS

Citronella oil from Cymbopogon species should not be confused with other similar lemony oils from Corymbia citriodora and Pelargonium citrosum. Corymbia citriodora is a tall tree from temperate and tropical north eastern Australia, also known as Lemon Eucalyptus and Eucalyptus Citriodora. Pelagonium citrosum is a perennial subshrub with fragrant leaves that are reminiscent of citronella. It is also commonly known as Mosquito Plant or Citrosa Geranium. Research indicates the plant is ineffective at protecting humans against mosquito bites and mosquitos were seen landing on and resting on the citrosa plant on a regular basis, showing no mosquito repelling properties.

    A NATURAL INSECT REPELLENT

Citronella oil is a volatile oil that is a renowned, natural, plant-based, aromatic insect repellent. Citronella smells very attractive and delightful to humans while it naturally repelling insects such as mosquitos, black flies, fleas and ticks, therefore preventing its bites. Citronella, used in the form of oil, liquid or patch, is used on humans and their clothes to repel insects. In tablet or pellet form it is used in recreational areas, outdoor household areas, around trees and shrubs. Animal collars and tags containing citronella are used on pets and other domestic animals to repel fleas and ticks. Citronella has been registered for this use in the United States since 1948. The United States Environmental Protection Agency considers oil of Citronella as a biopesticide with a non-toxic (little or no toxicity) mode of action as a topical insect repellent, with no reports of adverse effects of concern over a 60 year period. Citronella's mosquito repellent qualities have been verified by research, including effectiveness in repelling the dengue fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti). To be continually effective, most Citronella repellent formulas need to be reapplied to the skin every 30 to 60 minutes. Research also indicates that Citronella oil is an effective repellent for body louse and head louse. Research also shows that Citronella oil has strong antifungal properties, and is effective in calming barking dogs.

It is native to southeast Asia and is grown commercially in Sri Lanka, India, Burma, and Indonesia. Citronella oil from Cymbopogon species should not be confused with other similar lemony oils from Corymbia citriodora and Pelargonium citrosum.

CITRONELLA USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

The smell of Citronella oil repels blood-feeding mosquitos, ticks, and fleas.

When Citronella oil is applied on the skin it gradually vaporizes due to body heat and acts in two ways. One is the inherent mosquito repellent property of Citronella and the other is the odor of Citronella oil that blinds the mosquito's sensation for a while making them unable to locate the human body. The smell of Citronella is unpleasant to insects, but it does not harm or alter them in any way. A lotion with 10 percent concentration of Citronella oil has been shown to deter insects for up to an hour.

ADVANTAGES OF CITRONELLA OIL OVER DEET

DEET is a N, N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide which is used as a mosquito repellent but the biggest disadvantage of DEET is that it is toxic. DEET goes into the bloodstream through skin and hampers the nervous system of the body. On the other hand citronella oil has few or no toxicity, the application of this oil is very easy as it is available in various forms like oil, repellent bracelet, candles etc. As such citronella oil is a boon to the insect repellent industry. It is one of the fast and safe ways to remove insects from our home.

Citronella oil is seen in many products designed to protect humans, pets, and open-air spaces from the public health risks posed by mosquitoes, fleas and ticks. A Citronella oil spritz can be used on clothing. A Citronella lotion or soap on their skin, treated collars on their pets and candles or pellet bags surrounding their picnic. Innovative entrepreneurs have even created wristbands or bracelets, personal wipes, and sunblock spray. Citronella is totally harmless to most people, although occasionally a mild irritation might develop from an allergic reaction.

Besides its effectiveness as an insect repellent, Citronella has been used for rheumatism, colds, headaches, lower back pain, migraines, fevers, pain, sprains, muscular aches, intestinal parasites, digestive problems, menstrual problems, stomach complaints, and an after childbirth wash. Citronella speeds healing, reduces fatigue and depression. It can be used as a germicide/antiseptic. This oil can bring on excessive perspiration, condition oily skin and hair, and enhance mental acuity.

  • CITRONELLA SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS INFORMATION

Citronella oil is for external use only and should be used according to the label instructions to prevent side effects.

Citronella is not expected to pose health risks to people, including young children and other sensitive populations. Citronella oil can be hazardous if it is taken in larger quantities, it may irritate the skin and eye of the individual. If accidentally ingested, seek medical help immediately. Do not use if you are pregnant. This oil has been known to increase the heart rate in some people. Safety in young children, nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.

Because some products are applied to human skin, EPA requires proper precautionary labeling to help assure safe use. If used according to label instructions in the US, citronella is not expected to pose health risks to people, including children and other sensitive populations. The US Food & Drug Administration consider citronella oil as generally recognized as safe (GRAS). Canadian regulatory concerns with citronella as an insect repellent are primarily based on data-gaps in toxicology, not on incidents. In Europe, Ceylon type citronella oil is placed on the category 3 list, with some safety concern regarding methyl eugenol. In the UK, E.U. legislation governing insect repellents came into force in September 2006, which banned citronella as an active ingredient in any insect repellent products. This applied to both insect repellent for humans and animals. It can still be sold as a perfume, but must not be sold as an insect repeller.
