MoonDragon's Aromatherapy Information
CARDAMOM ESSENTIAL OIL
Native to the East originating in the forests of the Western Ghats in Southern India where it grows wild and is grown in Sri Lanka and cultivated today in Asia, Indo China and Tarzania, and Guatamala. The Cardamom plant grows in abundance in forests at 5,000 feet above sea level. The Vikings came upon Cardamom about one thousand years ago in Constantinople and introduced it into Scandinavia, where it remains popular to this day. One of the oldest, very ancient spices in the world, Cardamom is valued for its aroma, pungent taste and healing properties. Cardamom is a seed pod with an exotic fragrance of the Far East that is used in many Oriental dishes.
Cardamom has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years as a remedy for many digestive problems such as digestion and gas. Adding cardamom to milk neutralized its mucus forming properties and it detoxifies caffeine in coffee. It is a natural perfume of the vegetable kingdom, and the seeds are often used as an ingredient of old-time love potions. Cardamom is a mild stimulant. In ancient Chinese medicine, Cardamom tea was used to reduce the acidity of the stomach, stimulate digestion, and eliminate flatulence. Today Cardamom is an ingredient used widely in Christmas cookies, Danish and Swedish cookies, coffee cakes, pastries, teas and candies. Medicinally it is used for treating digestive problems like indigestion, gas, loss of appetite and cramps. It is also used in digestive remedies for its pleasant taste as well as its soothing properties. Cardamom is still used to treat involuntary urination, phlegm, colds, cough, bronchitis, asthma, anorexia and general debility as well as for disorders of the urinary tract. It is also used for digestive upsets, soothing a spastic colon and relieving flatulence and constipation.
Cardamom comes in various forms and is an ingredient in numerous products. To take an infusion, take 1 teaspoon of freshly crushed seeds in 1 cup of boiling water, let sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink 3 times a day. Treating flatulence or to stimulate the appetite, drink a half an hour before meals. For other formulations, read and follow product label directions. Cardamom is a spice and generally regarded as safe, however, for those with ulcers, it is best to seek the advice of a health care provider before using Cardamom internally. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known. If you have gallstone, it could trigger a painful attack due to its stimulative effect on the gallbladder.

CARDAMOM OIL USE & THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS
The seeds and dried , ripe fruits (pods) of Cardamom are hand-picked just before they open in the fall and are steam distilled to yield a powerful essential oil. Research conducted in the 1960s indicated that this oil has a strong antispasmodic action, confirming its use - both past and present - as a soothing remedy for bloating, indigestion, stomachache, and gas. Additionally, the oil is valuable in treating physical exhaustion and most muscle spasms, including menstrual cramps. When Cardamom oil is used in a bath, massage or vaporizer, the overall scent is pleasing - warm and spicy. This may account for the oil's popularity as an aphrodisiac. While Cardamom tends to overpower other scents, it will blend well with Bergamot, Caraway, Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Cloves, Jasmine, Lemon, Orange, Patchouli, Rose, Rosemary, and Ylang-Ylang essential oils.
The most important medicinal constituents are in Cardamom essential oil, which contains borneol, camphor, carvone, eucalyptol and terpinene.
Cardamom contains a-pinene, sabinene, b-pinene, myrcene, limonene, 1,8-cineole, a-phellandrene, y-terpinene, p-cymene, linalool, linalyl acetate, terpinolene, terpinen-4-oil, citronellol, nerol, geraniol, a-terpineol, a-terpineol acetate, methyl eugenol and trans-nerolidol.
Cardamom essential oil has been used throughout history - in particular ancient Indian (Ayurvedic) tradition - to treat asthma, digestive upset, anorexia, and kidney stones. Cardamom oil is used today to relieve cramps and coughs, alleviate tension, stimulate digestion and pamper the soul. Cardamom oil is an effective treatment for muscle spasms, menstrual cramps, stiff joints, exhaustion, bloating, gas and stomachaches.
