CALAMUS ESSENTIAL OIL
CALAMUS ESSENTIAL OIL DESCRIPTION
The Calamus plant (Acorus calamus), which belongs to the family Araceae, is native to areas of Southeast Asia. Calamus (Acorus calamus) is also known as Sweet Flag, Flag Root, Cinnamon Sedge, Sweet Myrtle, Acorus, Sweet Calomel, Vacha, Bacc, Sweet Cane, Sweet Grass, Sweet Root, and Sweet Rush. Calamus was introduced to Europe and North America hundreds of years ago; now it grows wild along bodies of standing water.
Essential oil of Calamus, obtained from the root via steam distillation, stimulates the appetite and helps relieve gastrointestinal ailments. Due to its antibacterial properties, Calamus Oil is also used in gargles. Similarly, people in India chew pieces of Calamus root as a remedy for toothaches and to cleanse the mucous membranes of the mouth. Calamus Oil also promotes blood flow through the tissues and stabilizes circulation. Thus, it can provide the body with lasting warmth, preventing muscle tension and cramps and alleviating rheumatic aches and joint pain. Finally, the oil's fresh, mildly pungent aroma can be beneficial in relieving exhaustion.
CALAMUS ESSENTIAL OIL PROFILE
Common Name: Calamus; Sweet Flag Botanical Name: Acornus calamus Origin: India Parts Used: Root Scent Characteristics: Strong, warm, woody, spicy fragrance, reminiscent of sweet forest Extraction Method: Steam distillation of the roots
Calamus is a red-like aquatic plant growing to about 3 to 3.5 feet high, with sword-shaped leaves and small greenish-yellow flowers. it grows on the margins of lakes and streams with a long-branched rhizome immersed in the mud. Its erect, sword-shaped leaves bear considerable resemblance to those of the Yellow Flag, hence its equally common popular name of "Sweet Flag," though it is not related botanically to the Iris. All parts of the plant have a peculiar, agreeable fragrance. Calamus was largely grown for its rhizomes in the East and the Indian rhizomes were imported extensively long after it was common in Europe. The Indian rhizome is said to have a stronger and more agreeable flavor than that obtained in Europe or the United States.

CALAMUS OIL USES
Calamus Essential Oil, Acorus calamus, is highly esteemed as an aromatic stimulant and tonic, often used for nervous complaints, vertigo, headaches, and dysentery. A fluid extract is an official preparation in the United States and some other Pharmacopias, but it is not now official in the British Pharmacopoeia, though it is much used in herbal medicine as an aromatic bitter. It also acts as a carminative, removing the discomfort caused by flatulence and checking the growth of the bacteria which give rise to this problem. It has been often used to increase the appetite and benefit digestion, given as a fluid extract, infusion or tincture. The tincture is, obtained by macerating the finely-cut rhizome in alcohol for seven days and filtering, is used as a stomachic and flavoring agent. The essential is used as an addition to, and included in inhalations blends.
Calamus Essential Oil may be used in soap making ingredients, lotions, massage oils, diffusers, potpourri, scent, air fresheners, body fragrance, perfume oils, aromatherapy products, bath oils, towel scenting, spa's, incense, light rings, laundry, facial steams, hair treatments, and more.
CALAMUS TRADITIONAL USE IN HISTORY
Calamus herb has traditionally been smoked, eaten, or brewed into a tea, decoction, extract, tincture and syrup. According to Ayurvedic tradition, Vacha is a 'sattvic' herb which feeds and transmutes the sexual 'kundalini' energy. Calamus has been called called 'the closest thing to a sex stimulant that nature has to offer.' It is a stimulating nervine antispasmodic, and a general tonic to the mind. As a rejuvenative for the brain and nervous system, it is used to promote cerebral circulation, to stimulate self-expression, and to help manage a wide range of symptoms in the head, including neuralgia, epilepsy, memory loss and shock. In many cases involving the sinuses or shock, the powdered root is taken nasally. The Cree say that they can take Calamus root and 'travel great distances without touching the ground'.
It is used in the Phillipines for rheumatism and memory problems. In Korea, it is an ingredient in a type of moonshine called Immortals' Booze. Research in China has shown the essential oil in this rhizome to be sedating and neuroprotectant. Sweet flag, more accurately Acorus gramineus, Japanese Sweet Flag, has been used in Asia for at least the last 2000 years for a number of beneficial reasons. The ancient Chinese used it to lessen swelling and for constipation.
The Indian and European variety is Acorus calamus. In India, Ayurvedic medicinal practice has used the magical root to cure fevers, for asthma and bronchitis, and as an all around sedative. Acorus calamus root was also used by the ancient Greeks and included in the traditional remedies of many other European cultures. During the middle ages calamus was an admixture in several of the ancient, psychoactive 'witches flying ointments', often being mixed with solanacious herbs. The root was also well-known in Biblical times and mentioned in Exodus 30: 22 to 25 as one of the ingredients of the 'holy anointing oil'.
The Cree Indians of Northern Alberta use Calamus for a number of medicinal reasons including: as an analgesic for the relief of toothache or headache, for oral hygiene to cleanse and disinfect the teeth, the fight the effects of exhaustion or fatigue, and to help cure/prevent a hangover. Other Native tribes used it to treat a cough, made a decoction as a carminative and as an infusion for cholic. The Sioux used the whole plant, making aromatic garlands from the leaves and using the root as a tea for bowel pains, or rubbed the chewed root on the skin for a general illness cure. Calamus was also known to many early American settlers and used for a number of folk remedies. Walt Whitman even wrote poetry about his beloved herb in 'Leaves of Grass'. Calamus was also widely used by Canadian trappers working for the Hudson Bay Company, using it as a stimulant, chewing a small piece whenever tired.
BLENDS WELL WITH
Calamus essential oil, Acorus calamus, blends well with the following essential oils: Cananga, Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Labdanum, Olibanum, Oregano, Patchouli, Spice and other oriental bases.
Oral toxin, the essential is reported to have carcinogenic properties. Calamus can irritate the skin so be careful when using it.
The unpeeled, dried rhizome was listed in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia until 1916 and in the National Formulary until 1950, for medicinal use on humans. Today the FDA defines calamus as 'not intended for human consumption.' This is due to the fact that massive doses of isolated beta-Asarone given to lab rats over extended time periods have proven to be carcinogenic. This is low asarone essential oil, nonetheless, it should never be ingested, and is not for children or the pregnant.
THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF CALAMUS OIL
The active ingredient in Calamus oil is asarone, which has a stimulating effect. The oil contains asaryl aldehyde, campbene and limonene. Calamus oil is effective for digestive complaints, stomach pain, colic, throat inflammations, low blood pressure, periodontal disease, bleeding gums, muscle pain and rheumatic aches. It strengthens the body, stimulates the appetite and has an antispasmodic effect in cases of colic and stomach pain. The oil also relieves gas and acts as a mild laxative. Its sweat-inducing and diuretic effects help remove wastes from the body.
EXTRA TIP: Obtain essential oil of Calamus from a reliable source that can guarantee its authenticity.
TAKE CARE!: Because of its potentially carcinogenic effect if used in large quantities over an extended period of time, Calamus oil is banned in some countries - including for use in fragrances, one of its traditional uses. Like the majority of essential oils, Calamus should not be taken internally or applied undiluted to the skin. It is also not suitable for use during pregnancy.
