CAJEPUT (CAJUPUT) ESSENTIAL OIL
(Melaleuca Cajuputi, M. Minor, M. Leucadendria, M. Quinquenervia)
CAJEPUT ESSENTIAL OIL DESCRIPTION
A member of the family Myrtaceae, the Cajeput tree (Melaleuca cajuputi and other closely related species) is native to Australia, Malaysia, India, and the Spice Islands. Cajeput tree is a common name used for certain classification of tree that has a white spongy bark that is flexible and can easily flake off the trunk. The Cajeput tree is of the genus Melaleuca, native to Australia and is commonly known in North America as the Tea Tree. The name "Cajeput tree" is primarily used for the species M. cajuputi, M. leucadendra, M. linariifolia, M. viridiflora and M. quinquenervia. Other names for these trees are the paperbark tree, punk tree, or the white bottle brush tree. Similar subtropical trees from the eucalyptus family are evergreens with pointed leaves and white, red or green flowers. Aborigines of Australia often used the cajeput tree bark for shields, canoes, roofing material and timber. Melaleuca quinquenervia is considered an invasive species in swampy areas of Florida in the U.S. It was introduced into the United States both as an ornamental tree and to control erosion in swamps.
The aromatic tree can grow to a height of 130 feet and bears pale green oval leaves and clusters of small white flowers on long spikes. It is cultivated for its lumber and essential oil. Cajeput Oil, extracted by a process of steam distillation from the tree's leaves and twigs, has long been valued for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It can help treat upper-respiratory ailments, such as bronchitis, asthma, laryngitis, colds and flu. The oil also eases arthritis, rheumatism, and such nervous-stomach complaints as cramps and gas. In addition, Cajeput Oil can alleviate neuralgia, neuritis, toothaches, bleeding gums and symptoms caused by urinary tract infections. Furthermore, Cajeput Oil possesses many antiseptic qualities and may relieve skin blemishes, acne, psoriasis and dermatitis. On an emotional level, Cajeput oil's fresh and Eucalyptus-like fragrance can invigorate the senses, helping to clear the mind and banish fatigue and poor concentration.

CAJEPUT PLANT & OIL DESCRIPTION
Cajeput Oil is a volatile oil obtained by distillation extraction from the leaves of the myrtaceous tree (Melaleuca cajuputi, closely related to Melaleuca leucadendra and also known as M. Minor), and probably other Melaleuca species of the Myrtaceae family. An evergreen, vigorous growing tree, it can reach 98 feet and taller and has a whitish spongy bark with a crooked trunk. The name "Cajeput" is derived from its Indonesian name, "kayu putih" or "white wood" (from the Malaysian word kayu-puti), weeping tea tree, and weeping paperback. It is also known as Cajaputi in Hindi and in ancient India as Kayaputi. Sometimes called the swamp tea tree, it has white flowers hanging on a long spike. The leaves are highly aromatic and revered in the East for all its uses.
The trees of the Melaleuca group are a sub-species of the family Myrtaceae which includes all the Eucalyptuses, Clove and Myrtle and the predominant property which is shared by all members of this family is the ability to combat and sometimes prevent infection. The trees yielding the oil are found on the Malayan coastal plains, throughout the Malay archipelago, the Malay Peninsula and over the hotter parts of the Australian continent; but the greater portion of the oil is produced from Sulawesi. It originated from the hot dry day in Buru island, Ambon, Maluku Tengah - Indonesia. Not only was it used as an ingredient for cosmetics and perfumes, it was also well known for its antiseptic properties and was a traditional remedy for the stomach, for rheumatism, cholera and as an insecticide.
Cajeput Oil is obtained from the leaves and buds of the tree, and prepared from leaves collected on a hot dry day, macerated in water, and distilled after fermenting for a night. This oil is extremely pungent, and has the odor of a mixture of turpentine and camphor. It consists mainly of cineol (see terpenes), from which cajuputene, having a hyacinth-like odor, can be obtained by distillation with phosphorus pentoxide. The oil extracted by steam distillation is a greenish-yellow color which distinguishes it from several other oils from closely related varieties of Melaleuca. The greenish tinge is due to traces of copper found in the Melaleuca leucodendron tree. The active principles of the oil include large proportions (between 45 and 65 percent) cineol, with terpinol, pinene and various aldehydes. The odor is decidedly medicinal, camphorous and very penetrating. This typical volatile oil is used internally in doses of 2 to 3 minims, for the same purposes as, say, clove oil. It is frequently employed externally as a counterirritant. It is an ingredient in some liniments for sore muscles such as Tiger Balm and Indonesian traditional medicine Minyak Telon.
The main chemical components of Cajeput Oil include Myrcene, a-Terpinene, y-Terpinene, Terpine-4-ol, a-terpineol (Alcohol), Benzaldehyde (Aldehyde) , 1,8-Cineole (Ketone), Dipentene, Limonene, p-Cymene, Terpinolene, Linalool, a-Pinene, b-Pinene (Terpenes).
It has a bitter, pungent, sweet taste with powerful, fresh, eucalyptus-like camphoraceous odor. Its actions are analgesic, antibacterial, antidontalgic, antiheurmatic, antimicrobial, antineuralgic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, balsamic, carminative, cicatrisant, cosmetic, bactericide, decongestant, diaphoretic, emenagogue, expectorant, febrifuge, hemostatic, insecticide, pectoral, stimulant, sudorific, tonic, vermifuge, vulnerary.
Cajeput Oil is known for producing a sensation of warmth and quickening the pulse. In Australia the crushed leaves and twigs have been applied directly to relieve aches and pains. It improves mood and increases resistance to infections. A good 'unwinding' oil. The oil can be used in a steam inhalation to help clear the nasal passages, also helpful when treating oily skin and spots. It is noted for its antiseptic properties, as is its cousin, Tea Tree Oil. Like Tea Tree oil it may have use against resistant staph infections. Excellent antiseptic for the respiratory tract. Its sudorific properties help to minimise feverish colds by exerting a cooling influence. A drop in the bath promotes sweating, releasing flu toxins and is also effective in inhalations. It is particularly beneficial at the start of infections such as in colds, pharyngitis, laryngitis and bronchitis. Its smell, which is similar to Eucalyptus, can be useful in inhalations for bronchial conditions. It is also used as an ingredient in inhalants / decongestants and topical pain / inflammation remedies such as Olbas Oil. Said to ease chronic pulmonary disease generally and may be helpful for asthma. This powerful oil is used with great success for digestive and skin problems and helps to balance the mind by clearing thoughts, stimulating the mind and dispelling the feeling of sluggishness. Soothes colic and inflammation of the intestines such as enteritis, dysentery, gastric spasm, nervous vomiting and intestinal parasites. Also has an antiseptic effect on the urinary system and could help with cystitis and urethritis. In the same family as the Tea Tree, this oil is highly antiseptic.
Arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, colds, coughs, cystitis, flu, insect bites, muscular aches and pains, oily skin, sinusitis, sore throat, urinary infection, viral infections. Cajeput Oil can be used similar to Eucalyptus during the cold season. Add it to a diffuser to disinfect the air, and clear congestion.

COMMON USES OF CAJUPUT ESSENTIAL OIL
The cajeput trees are a source of cajeput oil in Southeast Asia, an essential oil that is extracted from the leaves and twigs of the tree. Cajeput oil is primarily used in aromatherapy as an expectorant, painkiller, antifungal oil and skin mite reducer. The oil is produced by steam distillation of the Melaleuca leucadendra and Melaleuca quinquenervia species. A similar essential oil known as tea tree oil is extracted from the species Melaleuca alternifolia, a native of Australia. Melaleuca pollen can be an allergen and tea tree oil may cause allergic reactions for some people. Cajeput trees grown in Australia are well known for having powerful therapeutic properties. Compared to other countries, Australia's cajeput contains high amounts of anti-infectious properties (cineol, pinene and others), and is a favorite among health professionals.
Powerful antiseptic and bactericide. These are perhaps the most priced properties of Cajeput Oil. It is very efficient in fighting infections from bacteria, virus and fungi, such as tetanus (bacteria), influenza (virus) etc. and infectious diseases like cholera, typhoid etc.

It is helpful for asthma, sinusitis and sore throat. It has pain-killing properties which are useful in reducing the discomfort of sore throats and headaches that accompany colds.

Its insecticidal properties are so strong that its diluted solution can be sprayed or it can be vaporized with the help of a vaporizer to drive away mosquitoes, ants etc. (of course, not the cockroaches) from the rooms. Mosquito nets can also be dipped in its solution for added benefits. Its diluted solution can also be rubbed on the body to keep away insects. Helps neuralgia, along with associated toothache and earache. Neuralgia is a very painful situation in which the almost the entire oral zone, including the throat, ears, tonsils, base of the nose, larynx and pharynx and the surrounding areas suffer from severe pain due to compression of the Glossopharyngeal or the ninth cranial nerve by the surrounding blood vessels which tend to swell from chewing, eating, laughing, shouting or any other excitement or movement in that region. Here Cajeput Oil can give immense relief. It, being an analgesic, reduces the feeling of pain on the one hand and on the other, cools down or relaxes the blood vessels reducing their swelling, thereby relieving the pressure on the ninth cranial nerve, giving immediate relief from the pain.
As a toothache remedy, as an analgesic in nature, Cajeput Oil> can be used to dull the pain of toothache. When applied locally, a single drop is put in or on the infected tooth as a first-aid until the sufferer is able to get to a dentist. Presumably the relief from pain is sufficiently welcome for the stinging this must cause to be disregarded. The only other oil used in this way is that of Clove, which is another strong irritant and also a member of the larger botanical family (Myrtaceae).
As an analgesic, it can be rubbed on the forehead for a headache.
Good for helping hair and skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis, used for oily skin and spots. It smoothens and brightens skin and keeps it free from infections, thus used extensively in cosmetics, antiseptic creams etc. It also tones up the skin and hence used as a tonic.
