    BLACK CURRANT DESCRIPTION

    A VARIETY OF USES

Black Currant fruits have been commonly used by the Russians to make wine, while in Siberia, they use the young leaves to make common spirits that resemble brandy. Goats eat the leaves and bears like the berries, which are said to have medicinal properties. The history of the Black Currant plant in the U.S.A. is long and very interesting. Back in the early 1900ís the Black Currant was banned from growing. The ban was enacted when it was discovered that Black Currants helped to spread the tree disease White Pine Blister Rust, which threatened the then booming U.S. lumber industry. In 1966 the ban was lifted so individual states could ban or not. Since the ban took place Black Currant is not abundantly known like in Europe or the UK. In the 19th Century it was used widely in the US. It was found that many of the Native Americans used Black Currant for many issues. Such as, the root for kidney problems, a tea to treat uterine problems, use of the root bark to expel intestinal worms, or eating the berries to counter constipation and some ground the internal bark to make a poultice for swellings; if the skin turned yellow as a result it was considered strong enough. In the United Kingdom during WWII most fruits rich in Vitamin-C became almost impossible to obtain (like oranges). Since Black Currant berries are a rich source of Vitamin C and are suitable for growing in the UK climate, the British government encouraged the cultivation.

Black Currant Seed Oil is derived from black currants (ribes nigrum), that are native to northern parts of Europe and Asia. This oil is very rich in essential fatty acids, especially omega 6 and omega 3 essential fatty acids. Along with these, it is also rich with alpha-linoleic acid, Gamma-linolenic acid and stearidonic acids as well. Black Currant Seed Oil, also known as European currant oil, is used as European folk medicine since ages.

Black Currant Seed Oil is said to have anti-inflammatory properties and it is also cardioprotective, meaning, it protects the cardiovascular system and as a matter of fact, the whole body. This oil is diuretic, which means it promotes urine output and reduces arthritic and rheumatic pains. It is primarily used as a medicine and a dietary supplement as it is pain reducing with many health benefits of black currant seeds.

BLACK CURRANT USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

BLACK CURRANT SEED USES & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Black Currant fruits are a good source of vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals. The seeds of the fruit contain an omega-6 fatty acid called gamma linoleic acid (GLA). GLA increases the bodyís production of prostaglandin E-1 which helps increase blood flow, decrease blood clotting, and reduce inflammation. Black Currant fruits help increase bodily resistance to infections and are a valuable remedy for treating colds and flu. The fresh or vacuum-sealed juice, helps stem diarrhea and calms indigestion. The leaves encourage the elimination of fluids that reduces blood volume, and in turn, lowers blood pressure. An infusion can be used to treat rheumatic pain and whooping cough. Black Currant leaves can be used externally on slow-healing cuts and abscesses, and as a gargle for sore throats and mouth ulcers. A decoction of the bark has been used to treat hemorrhoidal tumors. Black currant seed oil is good for treating diarrhea, arthritis and gynecological problems. Black Currant Seed Oil has been used to relieve symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. Here are a few areas where the Black Currant Seed Oil is very important and why they work.

    SKIN DISORDERS

Black Currant Seed Oil is rich with omega 6 fatty acids that prevent premature aging. alpha-linoleic acid adb gamma-linolenic acids that are present in this oil works in healing scars, repairing damaged tissues, reduce premature wrinkle formation, maintaining healthy skin and reducing problems like dry and damaged skin.

The anti-inflammatory properties are effective against skin irritations when take orally. The Skin Study Center in Philadelphia found that the Black Currant Seed Oil helps with dry skin disorders. The gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) protects against the water loss that contributes to itching and other symptoms associated with dry skin.

    CARDIOVASCULAR DISORDERS

Black Currant Seed Oil produces prostaglandins, which controls constriction of the blood vessels. Regular consumption has proved to decrease the atherosclerotic lesions (Vessel wall thrombus formation). The benefits of Black Currant Seed Oil are also very significant in reducing platelet aggregation, reducing blood clotting, controlling blood pressure levels, reducing cholesterol levels and maintaining the overall heart health.

There has been two Canadian studies that have shown the omega-6 fatty acids lowers blood pressure. This is done as the prostaglandins counteract the constriction of blood vessels.

    WOMEN'S HEALTH ISSUES

Since prostaglandin regulates the menstrual cycle it is helpful before and during menstruation. Gamma-linoleic acid produces anti-inflammatory prostaglandins as opposed to inflammatory prostaglandins; this leads to lessening of the severity of premenstrual cramps.

Black Currant Seed Oil is rich with linoleic acids that have anti-inflammatory effects on the body and benefit in alleviating the premenstrual syndrome (PMS), stomach ache, back pain, cramping during ovulation, breast tenderness and other symptoms of premenstrual syndrome like mod swings and momentary depressions.

It is also observed that the gamma-linolenic acids present in this oil increase the rate of metabolism and cause significant amount of weight loss. Black Currant Seed Oil also soothes the nervous system and maintains the energy levels of a person. Although there are no significant side effects of this seed oil, it is always best to check with the health care provider if you are pregnant and breastfeeding woman.

    RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

The oil keeps the secretion of the inflammatory cyotokines under control and provides relief from pain and swellings of different sorts. It also helps to heal several liver diseases, especially the damaged caused to the liver by alcohol.

As an anti-inflammatory agent it works well by decreasing the morning stiffness in the joints. The British Journal of Rhemuatology has stated that it may also be effective because of a "reduction in the secretion of the inflammatory cytokines (a source of inflammation) 11-1 and TNF-alpha." By preventing their production, the oil offers some relief.
