BERGAMOT OIL DESCRIPTION

We must likely have Columbus to thank for transporting the Bergamot tree from its native home in the Canary Islands to Italy, where it has been cultivated ever since. It is the inedible, bitter green fruit of the Bergamot tree, once called the Bergamot Pear, that gives us one of the most commonly used essential oils.

Bergamot Oil, which is released when the peels of the fruit are cold-pressed, has a pale emerald green color and a slightly sweet, lemon-orange (citrus) scent. The oil has many uses. Its refreshing, distinctive aroma lifts the spirits, relaxes frayed nerves and even diminishes anxiety, fear and anger, while the oil itself possesses strong antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

Adding Bergamot Oil to a Sitz Bath helps treat such urinary tract infections as urethritis and cystitis. When applied topically, the oil can help in the healing of irritated skin; thus, it can effectively treat acne and insect bites.

Bergamot oil's most familiar culinary use is in Earl Grey Tea. Minute drops of the oil (it is safe to ingest in tiny amounts) give the tea its flavor and delightful aroma.

BLENDING WITH OTHER OILS

Aromatherapy benefits of Bergamot Oil are uplifting, inspiring, and confidence-building. Bergamot oil goes particularly well with other essential oils such as Black Pepper, Clary Sage, Cypress, Frankincense, Geranium, Jasmine, Mandarin, Nutmeg, Orange, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Vetiver and Ylang Ylang essential oils.

SAFETY INFORMATION FOR BERGAMOT OIL

Essential and resin oils are volatile, fragrant materials extracted from the root, bark, wood, seed, fruit, leaf or flower of a single plant. Essential oils contain the odor, taste and medicinal properties of the plant itself, but in very concentrated form with no base oil, alcohol water or dilutants added. Bergamot Oil contains a constituent called bergaptene that increases the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet rays found in sunlight. Common sense dictates that one avoid using Bergamot on the skin when there is a possibility of exposure to sunlight.

When you use regular Bergamot Oil, or any citrus-based oil, avoid exposing your skin to direct sunlight (and other sources of ultraviole light, such as tanning beds) for at least 6 hours following application. Exposure to sunlight can cause photo toxicity resulting in severe burns, skin discoloration, blistering, or severe burning. Even when the ingredient Bergaptene (Furocoumarin) is removed from the oil and photo toxicity is therefore minimized, it is still advisable to keep treated skin out of the sun.

Essential oils are very potent and should always be used sparingly and in conjunction with a reliable reference (diluted with a carrier oil or base ingredient). They should never be used undiluted on the skin or other body parts.

THERAPEUTIC EFFECT

Bergamot Essential Oil contains limonene, linalyl acetate, nerol and linalool, substances that are antiseptic and astringent. It is used to treat anxiety, depression, insect bites, fever and headaches. A Bergamot bath is recommended for vaginal itching and discharge and urinary tract infections. When mixed with a base or carrier oil, Bergamot Oil hastens the healing of cold sores and helps alleviate the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis.

SOME TRADITIONAL USES
  • From an uncommon citrus fruit. Bergamot Oil is cold-pressed from the peel of the nearly ripe fruit. The aroma of Bergamot Oil is fresh lively fruity and sweet. It is an excellent deodorizer or room spray.

  • In vapor therapy, Bergamot Oil can be used in the treatment of depression, postnatal depression, stress, tension, PMS, fear, hysteria, compulsive eating, and anorexia nervosa. When you are looking for an oil to help with depression SAD (Seasonal Affected Disorder) or generally feeling just a bit off, fed-up, lacking in self-confidence or feeling shy, then consider Bergamot.

  • As a constituent in a blended base cream, Bergamot Oil has antiseptic qualities that are useful for infection, wounds and cuts, all types including skin complaints such as oily skin, scabies, cold sores, acne, eczema, and psoriasis and general convalescence.

  • In vapor therapy, Bergamot Oil can be used for colds and flu.

FOR EXHAUSTION

Bergamot is one of the best essential oils for treating skin eruptions, especially those that are stress induced. Using the oil in a facial steam bath is effective for cleansing and healing the skin.
To make a steam bath, add oil to the bowl of steaming water. Drape a towel over your head and shoulders, and then bend your face over the bowl. For 10 to 15 minutes, breathe deeply, keeping your eyes closed. Caution: Do not use a steam bath if you have any broken facial capillaries.

  • CAUTIONS

Like many citrus-based essential oils, Bergamot oil is considered phototoxic. If you can, purchase the oil without bergaptene, the component that is responsible for the skin's increased sensitivity to ultra-violet rays. When you use regular Bergamot oil, or any citrus-based oil, avoid exposing your skin to direct sunlight for at least 6 hours following application; exposure to the sun may lead to skin discoloration, blistering or severe burning.
