BASIL ESSENTIAL OIL DESCRIPTION

Basil, also known botanically as Ocimum basilicum, is a native herb of Africa and Asia that is cultivated in North and South America, Europe and the Mediterranean. Basil Essential Oil is commonly extracted by steam distillation. The largest producing countries are Vietnam, France, Hungary and the United States. Parts used is the flowering plant, resulting in a fresh, warm, spicy, herbaeous aroma. It has a top note classification.

The name comes from the Greek word basilokos, meaning "royal," and indeed, Basil was once a very important ingredient in the oil used to anoint kings. Ocimum is derived from the Greek word osme, which means "to smell." Basil is a sacred plant in India, sacred to the Hindu gods Krishna and Vishnu. It was widely used in India's traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Basil has been used as a strewing herb to reduce odors, and has many culinary applications.

ESSENTIAL OIL PREPARATION

Essential and resin oils are volatile fragrant materials extracted from the root, bark, wood, seed, fruit, leaf or flower of a single plant. Essential oils contain the odor, taste and medicinal properties of the plant itself, but in very concentrated form with no base oil, alcohol Water or dilutants added. Essential oils are very potent and should always be used sparingly and in conjunction with a reliable reference.

Steam distillation and cold pressing are used to extract the essential oil from the basil plant. After steam distillation, the oil is then used in many medical preparations. The aromatherapy benefits is that it is clarifying, uplifting, energizing and refreshing. Its properties are antibacterial, antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, cephalic, digestive, emmenagogue, expectorant, febrifuge, nervine, stimulant, stomachic and tonic. When inhaled, the oil relieves coughs, whooping cough, emphysema, asthma attacks, bronchitis, sinus infection, congestion and colds. The oil is effective in treating nausea, indigestion, constipation and gas (flatulence), as well. Basil Essential Oil is also valued as a tonic to reduce stress, tension, anxiety, and mental fatigue. Further, the stimulating effects and spicy aroma of this oil help to clear the head, alleviate a headache, sharpen the senses, enhance concentration, and even revive someone from a fainting spell. Since Basil Essential Oil also aids circulation, it can stimulate menstrual flow and ease discomfort, too. Basil Essential Oil has been used to treat abrasions and wounds, insect bites and acts as an insect repellent. Basil Essential Oil can be added to a hair tonic to help stimulate growth.

There are many types of Basil: Linalool Basil, Exotic Basil and Sweet Basil. The odor of the Linalool type is very green floral-sweet and is most often used in expensive perfumes.
