ANISE ESSENTIAL OIL
ANISE ESSENTIAL OIL OVERVIEW
The Anise plant, native to the Near East, is now grown in warm regions throughout the world. The grayish brown seeds of Pimpinella anisum were highly prized in ancient Greece as a natural digestive aid. Known for their ability to reduce bloating and flatulence, the seeds effectively address nervous-stomach ailments that are accompanied by nausea or vomiting. Also of note is the plant's ability to sweeten bad breath. Anise oil, obtained from the seeds, can be used to settle the stomach, as well. In addition, the oil can have a regulating effect on the entire digestive tract - especially in cases of colic and diarrhea. The oil is also appreciated for its ability to relieve headaches and menstrual cramps, but it may irritate the skin unless it is first diluted. An inhalation prepared from Anise oil can provide relief from colds and bronchitis. With its pungent scent - which is similar to that of licorice - anise is useful in reducing mental fatigue and improving concentration.

Anise is also added to perfumes for a rich, sweet fragrance. It is used in pipe tobacco, as well as in a popular alcoholic drink in Turkey called "raki", which is made from and flavored with the seed. Writings by Pliny suggest anise as a morning pick-me-up.

Of Interest: Do not confuse Anise seed oil (Pimpinella anisum) with Star Anise oil (Illicium vernum) which is produced from the fruit of a tree and is not related. Anise Oil will crystalize at cool temperatures due to the anethole content in the oil. Anise seed is a favorite spice of ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans.
Safety Data: Use in moderation only as it can cause contact dermatitis and epidermal reactions (skin irritation) in some individuals. Avoid in epilepsy. Not to be used while pregnant or breast-feeding.

ANISE ESSENTIAL OIL USES
Anise Essential Oil (Pimpinella ansium) may be used as a flavoring or externally for various uses. Anise Oil has a peculiar licorice-like taste and aroma that many have grown to appreciate.
AROMATHERAPY & FRAGRANCE USES
Anise pure essential oils are suitable for use in aromatherapy, cosmetic preparation, healing and body care, potpourris and more. Apply anise essential oil externally as a fragrance. Anise Seed is added to perfumes for its rich, sweet fragrance. The oil of anise and star anise are often used and sold interchangeably because they are similar in aroma and chemical make-up. The primary constituent of both is anethole, a sweet substance that solidifies at room temperature. If this happens simply warm the bottle in a warm water bath until the oil liquefies.
Aromatherapy Health Benefits: Cheering, sense-enhancing, mildly euphoric. Aniseed oil can be useful in the treatment of muscular aches and pains, rheumatism, bronchitis, whooping cough, colic, cramp, flatulence, indigestion, catarrh and hangovers. Aniseed oil is not only helpful for its effect on the digestive system, it is also a general tonic to the circulatory system and the respiratory tract. It calms menstrual pains.
In vapor therapy Aniseed oil is useful for asthma, colds and all breathing problems, as well as quelling vomiting and nausea. Use one or two drops of anise oil in tea or hot water will soothe an upset stomach. Anise Oil should be used sparingly as an internal tonic.
Useful for digestive problems, it can also benefit migraine and vertigo sufferers.
ESSENTIAL OIL PROPERTIES
Steam distillation and cold pressing are used to extract the essential oil from the plant. Essential and resin oils are volatile, fragrant materials extracted from the root, bark, wood, seed, fruit, leaf or flower of a single plant. Essential oils contain the odor, taste and medicinal properties of the plant itself, but in very concentrated form, with no base oil, alcohol, water or dilutants added.
Aniseed oil goes particularly well with other essential oils such as Cardamom, Caraway, Cedarwood, Coriander, Dill, Fennel, Mandarin, Petitgrain and Rosewood essential oils.
Anise Essential Oils are guaranteed to be 100 percent pure and undiluted. The distillation process occurs either at the site where the plants are grown or at a distillery. Each oil is tested for purity and strength using the gas chromatography method. Distilled essential oil is usually packaged in glass amber bottles to preserve the oils, the smaller sizes may have a fitted dropper insert and a tamper-evident, child-proof lid. The larger items are in amber glass or PET gallon containers, depending on the product.
Aniseed is a very potent oil. It contains anethole that can cause dermatitis, so avoid in problem skin conditions. In large doses it can slow down the circulation and can cause cerebral congestion. It must be avoided during pregnancy.
Essential oils are very potent and should always be used sparingly and in conjunction with a reliable reference. Essential, absolute and resin oils are volatile, fragrant materials extracted from the root, bark, wood, seed, fruit, leaf or flower of a single plant. The plants used to produce these oils are grown on certified organic fields and are third-party certified by Quality Assurance International; no synthetic chemicals are used in growing or processing them. Steam distillation and cold pressing are used to extract the essential oil from the plant. Essential oils and absolutes are very potent and should always be used sparingly and in conjunction with a reliable reference. Essential oils contain the odor, taste and medicinal properties of the plant itself, but in very concentrated form, with no base oil, alcohol, water or dilutants added.
Anise oil is for nervous-stomach problems, general digestive complaints, colds, headaches, fatigue, menstrual pain and excessive mental strain.
Anisic acid, anisic ketone, anethole and acetaldehyde, the key components of Anise oil, are responsible for its antispasmodic, expectorant and digestive properties. The oil is effective in countering menstrual cramps and migraine headaches, and it can be useful in alleviating colic, nervous-stomach ailments and bad breath. In addition, Anise oil is beneficial for addressing coughs and other respiratory illnesses.
It is not recommended to apply undiluted Anise oil directly to the skin, since it may cause irritation or other allergic reactions. Be sure to mix the oil well with other ingredients before using and wash your hands thoroughly after use. Anise oil should also not be use for an extended period of time or if you are pregnant.
