MoonDragon's Aromatherapy Information
AROMATHERAPY ARTICLES & INFORMATION INDEX

Pure, concentrated plant extracts have been used for centuries and knowledge of their special properties has been collected throughout many ages. MoonDragon does not recommend use of aromatherapy as a substitute for medical care. We make no therapeutic claims and accept no liability. We simply suggest traditional uses based on the wisdom of those lived in harmony with nature.

STORING ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils are best stored in dark, air tight glass bottles, away from light and heat. Always store essential oil products out of reach of children and pets.

GENERAL USE & CAUTIONS

Essential oils should always be used with care. Essential oils should not be taken internally and should be diluted for any use. Exception: Lavender may be applied directly to the skin. If you experience any irritation, discontinue use and consult a health care practitioner. See individual essential oil information for specific safety details.

ESSENTIAL OIL SAFETY INFORMATION

Essential oils are highly concentrated liquids that can be harmful if not used carefully. Implementing aromatherapy into your lifestyle should not cause paranoia or undue worry. By treating essential oils as medicines and following the steps outlined below, you will be well on your way to safely enjoying the many benefits that aromatherapy can offer. These safety guidelines are not a complete safety reference for the proper use of essential oils. When in doubt, consult your health care provider and / or a qualified and trained aromatherapy practitioner.

  • Essential oils should never be used undiluted on the skin. There are instances when experienced aromatherapy users and practitioners make exceptions to this precaution, but only once significant essential oil knowledge is gained should you ever attempt to apply an undiluted oil on the skin. Lavender and Tea Tree are listed by a large number of aromatherapy sources as being oils that can be used undiluted. Undiluted use of Lavender and Tea Tree, however, should be avoided as severe sensitivity still could occur in some individuals. For instance, undiluted Lavender essential oil used on broken skin has been known to set up a sensitivity reaction resulting in dermatitis that can take months to heal and will recur any time the sensitized person comes into contact with Lavender in any form. The safest rule of thumb is to never use any essential oil undiluted.

  • Some oils can cause sensitization or allergic reactions in some individuals. When using a new oil for the first time, do a skin patch test on a small area of skin. A skin patch test is easy to do and will help you to determine if you have a sensitivity or reaction to a particular essential oil while reducing initial exposure to your skin. A skin patch test should also be performed on hydrosols, even though they are considered safe to used topically when undiluted (White Sage and Sweetgrass hydrosols are considered the exception). Dilute the essential oil as described below for an adult skin patch test.

  • DILUTING YOUR ESSENTIAL OILS FOR TOPICAL USE

Using a 2-percent essential oil dilution is considered a safe guideline for topical application of essential oils on adults. For children or elderly, reduce the dilution down to 1-percent. With children, use only essential oils regarded as safe for children unless you have educated yourself very well on aromatherapy for children. Avoid using essential oils that are known to cause skin irritation or sensitization. Many individuals have become accustomed to heavily scented commercial fragrances, lotions, cosmetics, soaps, and room fresheners fragranced primarily with synthetics. The aroma of a 2-percent dilution can seem very weak or barely aromatic at first, but you are used to strongly scented products. Be assured that over time, you will begin to adjust to the diluted blends.

The easiest way to make a 2-percent dilution is to add 12 drops of essential oil to each fluid ounce (30 ml) of cold pressed carrier oil, lotion, vegetable butter or other natural lipid moisturizer. On average, 600 drops of essential oil equals 1 fluid ounce or 30 ml. 2 percent of 600 drops equal 12 drops (600 X 0.02). For a precise measurement, add the 12 drops to the container and then fill to 1 fluid ounce with carrier oil (588 drops) at a 2 parts to 98 parts ratio. However, most people find it easier to measure out 1 fluid ounce of carrier oil and then add the 12 drops of essential oil to it, although it is not as precise.

When working with small quantities of essential oils, the easiest way to measure is by the drop. Unfortunately, one drop of one essential oil may be bigger or smaller than another because of the viscosity and temperature of the oil and the size of the dropper or orifice reducer. As such, measuring by the drop is not the most accurate method of measuring essential or carrier oils, but it is acceptable for creating small topical blends.

  • To perform a skin patch test: Place 1 to 2 drops of the diluted essential oil on the inside of your wrist, lower arm, or elbow. Never use essential oils on the skin that have not been diluted or are considered a hazard for topical use or are known to cause dermal irritation or sensitization. Cover the skin patch area with a bandage or gauze pad. Do not allow this area to become wet while performing the skin patch test (this is why the inside of the elbow may be preferred over the inside of the wrist or lower arm). If, at any time, you feel any irritation or reaction occuring, remove the bandage and wash thoroughly the skin with a mild soap and warm water. If no irritation has occured after a 24 hour time period, the diluted essential oil is considered safe for you to use on your skin. Keep in mind, each person is unique when it comes to sensitivities and allergies. An oil that you can use may not be suitable for someone else. Also, when using aromatherapy oils, less is always better. Use only enough to get the results you need.

  • SENSITIVITY SYMPTOMS

A skin sensitivity or skin allergy can result in a slight to severe, itchy rash, swelling, puffiness. More severe cases of reaction can include respiratory problems and anaphylactic shock. Once you develop a sensitivity to a certain substance or oil, you are most likely to remain sensitive to it, even if diluted. You may be sensitive to other substances or oils that may be related to them or contain these substances.

For more information about allergies, see Allergies Information.

  • Some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy or by individuals with certain health issues (such as epilepsy, asthma, allergies, or cardiovascular problems) or may be taking certain medications or supplements. Consult with your health care provider, midwife, or qualified aromatherapy practitioner prior to using a certain oil or oil supplement or beginning any new therapy. Also note, when using aromatherapy, not all essential oils are considered aromatherapy suitable for the untrained average person. Some of these are Bitter Almond, Camphor, Horseradish, Onion, Pennyroyal, Sassafras, Wintergreen and Wormwood essential oils. These should only be used by qualified aromatherapists, if at all. Never allow children to use aromatherapy oils without knowledgable adult supervision. Essential oils should not be used internally without a prior consultation and training by a qualified aromatherapist. Keep essential oils away from fire sources as they may be flammable.

Mountain Rose Herbs: Aromatherapy Hydrosols & Flower Waters

Flower waters also known as hydrosols, hydroflorates or distillates are products from the direct steam distillation of whole plant materials. Unlike their "essential oil added to water" counterparts, true steam distilled hydrosols contain all the beneficial components that whole plant materials have to offer, and are more true to their scent. They are wonderful and inexpensive as a facial splash, as a deodorant, an air freshener, in the spa, for skin application, during massage, as a base in your body care recipes, and most may be used in culinary creations. They are moisturizing, fragrant, cooling and contain similar properties as essential oils but in much less concentration, which makes them a lovely alternative to those with sensitivities. Mountain Rose have now expanded their entire line of hydrosols, which have all been distilled in improved stainless steel cookers and processed through certified organic methods. They are excited to offer you these exceptional quality flower waters which are quality control supervised from cultivation to distillation by Mountain Rose Herbs. Each of their 4 ounce hydrosols is packaged in an amber bottle with a black mister. The bulk 8 oz., 16 oz. and 1 gallon waters are packaged in HDPE plastic bottles.
