AROMATHERAPY - ESSENTIAL OIL DETAILS




Essential oil from plants, herbs and flowers is a precious substance. As an example, it takes about 440 pounds of fresh lavender flowers to produce 2-1/2 pounds of lavender essential oil. A single drop of essential oil can be equal to one ounce of the plant. A little goes a long way.

The condensed descriptions below give the Latin name and family for the plant used in the more common essential oils, the part of the plant that is used, the method of extracting the oil from the plant and the country where the oil is produced. There is a description of the scent, some traditional uses, blending tips, emotional profiles and safety data where it applies.

    Angelica Root - Angel's Herb


    Latin name: Angelica archangelica. Family name: Umbelliferae. Angelica root is distilled from the root of the Angelica plant and is imported from France. It has an earthy, green scent. Angelica has been used in Chinese medicine for promoting fertility. Some traditional uses: for relieving fatigue, migraines, to ease anxiety and nervous tension, to regulate menstrual cycles and relieve dysmenorrhea, for coughs, to restore sense of smell, for releasing accumulated toxins in the body. Angelica root should be avoided if you are pregnant or have diabetes. May cause skin sensitivity to bright sunlight. Emotional profile: grounding, eases dealing with difficulties, to create a feeling of balance. Blends with: vetiver, citrus oils, clary sage and patchouli.

    Sweet Basil - Awakening


    Latin name: Ocimum basilicum. Family name: Labiatae. Sweet basil oil is produced by distilling the leaves of the herb and is imported from France. It has a slightly licorice aroma. Basil originated in India and Hindus have used it for centuries in medicine.     Bay Laurel - Inner Inspiration


    Latin name: Laurus nobilis. Family: Lauraceae. Distilled from the leaves and branches of the tree and imported from France. It has a strong, sweet-spicy scent. The leaves of the bay laurel were placed under pillows by ancient Greeks to encourage prophetic dreams.     Bergamot - Uplifting Release


    Latin name: Citrus bergamia. Family name: Rutaceae. Bergamot oil is cold pressed from the fruit peel and is imported from Italy. It has a sweet & fruity scent. Bergamot oil is documented in old herbal texts.     Latin name: Elettaria cardamomum. Family name: Zingiberaceae. Cardamom oil is distilled from the seed and is imported from South and Central America. It has a spicy aroma with floral undertones. Cardamom has been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for over 3,000 years.     Cedarwood, Atlas / Virginia Cedar - Transformative Certainty


    Latin name: Cedrus atlantica. Family name: Pinaceae. There are several varieties of cedar; the Atlas Cedar is one of the most beneficial for aromatherapy. The oil is distilled from the wood and is imported from Morocco and Algeria, North Africa. It has a woody aroma. Atlas cedar was believed to have been used extensively by the Egyptians in cosmetics, perfume and medicine. Some traditional uses: to relax tense muscles, calm emotions, help breathing, for enhancing meditation, easing pain, repelling insects, for hair loss. Atlas Cedar should be avoided during pregnancy. Emotional profile: for relief of irrationality, worry, fear and mental obsession. Blends with: bergamot, cypress, ylang ylang, rosemary, juniper, vetiver, neroli, clary sage, and frankincense.

    Latin name: Juniperus virginiana. Verified Soothing and comforting, cedarwood oil extracts are best known for their warm, woody and balsamic aromas. They also mix wonderfully with other oils. Cedarwood Oil is 100% pure and natural, and steam-distilled from Juniperus virginiana, Virginian Cedarwood trees. For all uses except aromatherapy, carefully dilute with a carrier oil such as jojoba, grapeseed, olive, or almond oil prior to use. Please consult an essential oil book or other professional reference source for suggested dilution ratios. Warnings: Always dilute before any use other than aromatherapy. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with eyes. This oil may cause skin irritation. If pregnant or lactating, consult a practitioner before use. Not for internal use. Virginia Cedarwood may be diffused into the air as an insect repellant. Virginia Cedarwood oil is used as a fixative in perfumery. It is also used in the isolation of the sesquiterpene cedrene.     CHAMOMILE DIFFERENCES:

    German (Blue) Chamomile essential oil Has a high content of azulene, the active organic compound of chamomile, which bears a blue color. azulene has anti-inflammatory, skin healing properties. This oil is most suitable as an ingredient for skin care products. Blue chamomile is derived from the German chamomile plant, which is an upright growing annual. There are German chamomile plants that were breed for a high azulene content to use in the manufacturing of medicinal chamomile products.

    Roman Chamomile essential oil Is used for its skin healing properties in the manufacturing of body care products, as well as for aromatherapy. It has a very pleasant, soothing, apple-like aroma. The Roman chamomile plant is a low growing, perennial ground cover.

    Moroccan Chamomile essential oil Is not from a true chamomile plant. It is used mainly in perfume blends, and for aromatherapy. The plant is an annual that grows in the Mediterranean and in the Middle East. This is a product new to the market, it does not have a long history of traditional uses like true chamomile.

    CHAMOMILE GENERAL INFORMATION

    There are two plants known as Chamomile and they are used interchangeably. One is the German plant, Matricaria recutita. The second is a Roman plant known as Chamaemelum nobile. Both Chamomile plants look like miniature daises, and both are thought to possess similar medicinal purposes. Although called Roman Chamomile it was not cultivated until the 16th Century and probably arrived via Britain and used as a medicinal plant every since. German Chamomile has been taken for digestive problems since at least the 1st Century. Early Egyptian physicians used Chamomile tea for fevers. Hieroglyphic records also show that Chamomile was used cosmetically for at least 2,000 years. Egyptian noblewomen used preparations of crushed petals on their skin. Ancient Greeks, Romans, and Indians used this herb to treat disorders of the kidneys, liver, and bladder, and to relieve headaches. More than a million cups of Chamomile tea is consumed daily.

    CHAMOMILE LORE

    It was believed that it brought health to one's gardens and promoted healing energies, which were good for all plant species. Whereas Centuary is a patron herb for herbalists, Chamomile is a patron herb for the gardens. Chamomile is one of the "Nine Sacred Herbs" of the "Lacnunga", an ancient Anglo-Saxon manuscript. The strong association Chamomile has with the Sun is an underlying indication of its modern usage. Through incense or ritual drink it is used to assist a priest’s call to the Sun God (those working with any of the solar deities). Some traditions have used Chamomile at Midsummer to give honor to the Father of Nature.

    CHAMOMILE USES & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE FOR

    This herb has antiseptic, sedative, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties and it also acts as an antihistamine. In 1921, a topical form of Chamomile was introduced to treat a wide variety of skin disorders such as eczema, bedsores, post radiation therapy skin inflammation, and contact dermatitis. Germany's Commission E recommends topical Chamomile preparations for diseases of the skin and mouth. The Commission also recommends oral Chamomile for the treatment of pain and inflammation in the intestines and stomach. Chamomile is a wonderful relaxant for the nervous system and digestion, and a perfect remedy for babies and children. Chamomile relaxes smooth muscle throughout the body. In the digestive tract chamomile relieves tension and spasm, colic, abdominal pain, wind, distension, diarrhea and constipation. Chamomile tea reduces a fever and helps soothe colds, flu, sore throats, and coughs. The tea is also used for mild tension and stress. Chamomile works well as a general pain reliever and is often used for headache, migraines, neuralgia, toothache, earache, cramps, rheumatic and pains associated with gout. Its antiseptic oils soothe an inflamed bladder and cystitis. Inhaling Chamomile vapor works well for asthma, hay fever and other lung problems.

    CHAMOMILE RESEARCH & STUDIES

    German Studies in 1987 showed that a cream made from German Chamomile had the ability to heal wounds. In 2006 a study showed that Chamomile oil showed “high levels” of antiviral activity against the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Paul Schnitzler, PhD, of the Hygiene Institute at Germany’s University of Heidelberg was part of this test and found; of all the oils that were tested Chamomile oil was particularly good at targeting HSV-1 and it probably would not cause irritation if applied to the skin. Research done in 2004 showed that patients treated with chemotherapy or radiotherapy could use a Chamomile mouthwash. This mouthwash when applied to protect delayed the onset and reduced the severity of mucositis. Mucositis is inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus. In 2004 it was found that the itching of Chicken Pox could be helped with Chamomile soap. When in a warm bath for 20-30 minutes this soap is awesome for sensitive skin. More research done in 2004 found that the theory that herbal tea containing Chamomile has medicinal benefits. This study was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that Chamomile tea contains compounds that may help fight infections due to colds and relieve menstrual cramps.

    CHAMOMILE DOSAGE INFORMATION

    Chamomile comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. As a topical treatment, apply Chamomile cream to the affected area 1 to 4 times daily. For use as a tea, pour boiling water over 2 to 3 heaping teaspoons of flowers and steep. These dosages are meant to be used as guidelines. Always read product label directions before use.

    CHAMOMILE SAFETY & INTERACTION INFORMATION

    Chamomile is listed on the FDA's "generally recognized as safe" list, yet there have been some reports that it can cause severe reactions in people allergic to ragweed; however, evidence studied to date does not suggest that Chamomile is any more allergenic than any other plant. Excessive use of Chamomile is not recommended for those using anticoagulants. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.

    Chamomile, Roman - Calm Acceptance


    Latin name: Anthemis nobilis (Chamaemelum nobile). Family name: Compositae. The oil is distilled from the flowers grown in the USA. It has a sweet and fruity aroma. Chamomile was a sacred herb of the Saxons. Some traditional uses: to relieve muscular pain, as a sedative, ease anxiety and nervous tension, to help with sleeplessness. Roman Chamomile should be avoided during early pregnancy. Emotional profile: to relieve anger, hysteria, fear, spirit disconnection, grief, worry. Blends with: bergamot, cypress, jasmine, juniper, neroli, frankincense, clary sage, vetiver, rosemary and ylang ylang.

    Latin-Botanical Name: Matricaria recutita (Matricaria chamomilla). Flowers are steam distilled with a strong, warm, sweet herbaceous aroma with a middle note classification. The largest producing countries are Bosnia, Spain, and Hungary. Traditional uses of Blue, or German, chamomile has been used for nervous related ailments. Properties: Analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiphlogistic, antispasmodic, bactericidal, carminative, cicatrizant, digestive, emmenagogue, febrifuge, fungicidal, hepatic, nerve sedative, stomachic, sudorific, vermifuge, vulnerary. German Chamomile Benefits: Acne, arthritis, asthma, broken capillaries, burns, colic, cuts, dermatitis, dysmenorrhea, dyspepsia, eczema, headache, indigestion, insect bites, insomnia, migraine, muscular pain, muscular spasms, nausea, nervous tension, neuralgia, rashes, rheumatism, sensitive skin, sprains, stress related complaints, wounds. When adding blue chamomile to skin preparations take the color of the oil into consideration. Blends Well With: Benzoin, bergamot, citrus oils, clary sage, frankincense, geranium, jasmine, lavender, marjoram, neroli, patchouli, rose, rosemary, tea tree, ylang ylang. German (Blue) chamomile oil has a higher azulene content then Roman chamomile oil. This constituent also gives the oil its characteristic blue color. The azulene is not present in the fresh flower but is produced during the process of distillation. Safety Data: Avoid while pregnant.

Largest producing country is Morocco. Traditional Use: Moroccan chamomile oil has a short history. It is mostly used in perfumery. Properties: Antispasmodic, emmenagogue, sedative. Benefits: Amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, headache, insomnia, irritability, migraine, sensitive skin. This oil may add a rich herbaceous note to a blend. Blends Well With: Cedarwood, cypress, frankincense, lavender, oakmoss, vetiver. Moroccan chamomile is not considered a true chamomile. It should not be used as a replacement for Roman or German oils in a blend, because it is chemically and aromatically different. Safety Data: Generally considered safe.

    • Absolutes/Resins: Are extracted with a solvent, usually alcohol and sometimes other hydrocarbons, such as benzene, hexane, etc. While they are not suitable for therapeutic aromatherapy, they do make wonderful perfumes and are alcohol soluble. Those oils which we have found to be extracted with solvents will be noted as "solvent extracted."

    FLOWER WATERS (HYDROSOLS)

    Hydrosols, also known as floral waters, hydroflorates, flower waters or distillates are produced from steam-distilling plant materials. Hydrosols have similar properties to essential oils but are much less concentrated. Unlike their "essential oil added to water" counterparts, true steam-distilled hydrosols contain all the beneficial components that whole plant materials have to offer.

    Hydrosols are usually a by-product of essential oil production, but the highest quality comes from devoted distillers who, with artist-like precision, steam small batches of fresh floral and plant material strictly to produce hydrosol (the hydrosols offered by Mountain Rose Herbs are produced in this fashion). Most of their hydrosols are distilled in copper stills, (a few in stainless steel stills) and processed through certified organic methods in Washington, California and Europe. Hydrosols contain all of the essence of the plant in every drop, just like essential oils but in a milder form; making them suitable for all manner of applications where essential oils would be too strong. In most hydrosols there is less than 5 percent actual oil.

    Please note that their aromas are mostly mild and subtle, sometimes bright and fragrant, and most hydrosols have an herby or grassy note indicative of their authentic and therapeutic properties. Wonderful as a facial splash, body perfume, deodorant or air freshener. Cool a hot flash, change your mood or add them to lotions and creams.
