TOUCH & MOVEMENT THERAPIES



The skin and touch. Muscle and movement. Nerves that sense and coordinate. Our earliest awareness of being alive is deeply connected to all of these. Learning what it was like to touch and be touched, to reach out and hold things, to take our first steps: these fundamental experiences shaped how each of us feels and behaves today.

When a practitioner uses touch, the body and mind respond at many levels: in addition to a purely sensory response, pressure and stretching on skin and muscles affect tension in the body, changes occur in breathing and circulation, and certain nerve chemicals may be released. These reactions may be relaxing or stimulating, and can be triggered by the treatments grouped as touch therapies.

Movement - the actions we make with our bodies - is an equally powerful force. We may not realize it, but the way in which we stand, sit, walk, or gesture with our hands expresses a sense of who we are and how we feel about ourselves. Language, too, is important, and movement is bound up so instinctively with our sense of purpose in life that we describe life as a "journey" and speak of "running into trouble" or "walking on the straight and narrow." When we talk of "tension" or wanting more "freedom," we are connecting at some intuitive level to feelings of stretching and bending, of having room to move and maneuver. The power of therapies in which movement plays a key part lies in their ability to tap into this vital link.
