REFLEXOLOGY INTRODUCTION
Foot massage has been practiced for centuries, but reflexologists believe that it can do more than simply aid relaxation. According to reflexologists, the feet and the hands are a mirror of the body, and pressure placed on specific reflex points on them can be used to affect the corresponding areas of the body in order to stimulate natural healing powers and promote well-being. All parts of the foot (or, less commonly, the hand or ear) are massaged, so that the body as a whole benefits. The therapy has become popular around the world, and is often used in conjunction with aromatherapy or naturopathy.

Reflexologists apply pressure to points on the feet to stimulate nerve impulses, which is claimed to improve the body's natural healing mechanisms.
MAIN USES OF REFLEXOLOGY
High blood pressure.
Stress, anxiety.
Insomnia, migraine.
Asthma, sinusitis.
Eczema, psoriasis.
Wound healing.
Back pain.
Pain relief. Menstrual problems. Constipation.
REFLEXOLOGY MASSAGE
Massaging the feet to relieve tension and promote health is nothing new. Even ancient Egyptian pictographs portray people giving each other foot massages. It has long been a health practice in India, China and Japan, too. Reflexology massage is more than a simple foot massage, however - it combines gentle therapeutic techniques of massage with the healing power of reflexology. This is a formidable partnership for relieving stress and tension, which are responsible for so many health problems. Since the foot has more than 7,000 nerves, it is the perfect place to stimulate neural pathways that connect to the brain and can trigger the body's natural healing response. Pressure is applied to the foot's reflex zones to activate the flow of Qi (vital energy) and boost circulation. This therapy may be used to ease fatigue, pain, premenstrual syndrome and digestive disorders.

The ancient Egyptians were practicing some form of foot manipulation over 4,000 years ago, as shown in this wall painting from the Physician's Tomb at Saqqara, Egypt.
HISTORY OF REFLEXOLOGY
Foot massage is an ancient technique, said to have originated in China over 5,000 years ago. It was also practiced in ancient Egypt as seen on tomb paintings with men manipulating the feet and hands of others.
In 1915 Dr. William H. Fitzgerald, an American ear, nose, and throat specialist, introduced the concept of "zone therapy", claiming to alleviate certain symptoms and induce numbness by applying pressure to the hands, mouth, and feet.
American physiotherapist Eunice Ingham took this concept further in the 1930s, developing the Ingham Reflex Method of Compression Massage, which held that all parts of the body could be helped by pressing relevant areas of the feet. Ingham mapped out the reflex points and developed techniques for stimulation.
One of her students, Doreen Bayley, introduced reflexology to the UK in the 1960s. Its popularity has since soared, not only in the UK but Australia and New Zealand. It is used in pain clinics, cancer centers, and medical facilities for babies. In the US, its use in institutions is limited, but it has aided in the recovery of cardiac patients and brain-injured people.
KEY PRINCIPLES OF REFLEXOLOGY
Dr. Fitzgerald's theory of zone therapy maintained that zones on the left side of the body corresponded to reflex points on the left foot and hand, those on the right side to the right foot and hand
![]()
In Dr. Fitzgerald's theory, energy flows through 10 vertical zones, that run from the feet to the head, and also down each arm to the hands. Pressure on a reflex point in the appropriate zone area on the foot can treat organs, glands, bones and muscles within that zone.
Reflexologists believe that granular accumulations of waste matter concentrate around reflex points, in the form of uric acid and calcium crystals. The reflexologist will try to break these down in order to free "energy flow" along the zones, open blocked nerve pathways, and improve the blood supply to flush away toxins.
(See Gout and Arthritis for more information).
Although this theory of energy zones and points seems similar to the meridians of Chinese medicine, most reflexology practitioners maintain that it is a separate system. In modern practice, various slightly different maps have been developed, though all are based on the same fundamental principles.
In addition to body organs, states of mind are said to be represented by certain areas of the feet, so that emotional problems are thought to respond well to this therapy. Reflexology is said to work best for disorders of the internal organs and for stress-related disorders, such as headaches, constipation, and tension.

REFLEXOLOGY MASSAGE
The Treatment: A Trained reflexologist examines the feet, and sometimes the hands, identifying the reflex zones that are sensitive or tender and therefore indicate illness in other parts of the body. The therapist gently massages each foot, using a variety of techniques to apply pressure to its reflex zones. Patients sometimes feel a tingling sensation in the corresponding area of their bodies while certain reflex zones are being stimulated. Each reflexology massage session typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes.
THE THEORY OF REFLEXOLOGY
According to practitioners, when there is "imbalance" in the body, granular or crystalline deposits will accumulate on the relevant reflex point, making it feel tender to the touch. The greater the tenderness felt by the patient, the greater the imbalance. Hard skin, corns, bunions, and infections can all be interpreted by the practitioner as external manifestations of problems in the corresponding area of the body.
![]()
REFLEX POINTS ON THE SOLES OF THE FEET
According to Ingham's theory, every part of the body is reflected in a precise area, or reflex point, on the foot and hand. She developed a map of the feet to show these points.
![]()
THE TOPS & SIDES OF THE FEET
The tops and sides of the feet have fewer reflex points, but these include important points such as those for the spine and the lungs.
THE EFFECTS
Reflexology is used for chronic pain, headaches, acne, eczema, premenstrual syndrome, arthritis, digestive orders, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, sciatica, tension and neurological problems.
Reflexology massage stimulates the internal organs through reflex zones on the feet and hands. This helps increase blood flow and speeds the removal of wastes and toxins. As with acupuncture, reflexology unblocks the flow of Qi along channels from the feet to all the internal organs. Manipulations of the feet and hands also reduces buildup of lactic acid in the body's tissues, as well as the accumulation of toxins and calcium crystals that settle in the feet due to gravity and the constriction of shoes. Putting pressure on the reflex zones also releases pain-relieving endorphins in the brain and triggers the relaxation response.
REFLEXOLOGY TECHNIQUES
A reflexologist uses 5 basic techniques to apply pressure to the body's reflex zones. Each point is massaged 4-5 times before the pressure is released and the next reflex zone is worked on.
Finger Walk: During a finger walk, the therapist uses the tip of the index finger to apply pressure to the reflex zones. The therapist "walks" the finger from one reflex point to another.
Hook & Back Up: With the hook and back up, the therapist applies gentle pressure with the thumb, and then eases it slightly, while still maintaining some pressure.
Rotation On A Point: The therapist uses this technique to apply pressure with the thumb to points on the hands and feet. The hand or foot is rotated in circular motions around the thumb for fuller stimulation.
Single Finger Grip: This technique is useful for applying constant pressure to a single point. The tip of the middle finger or index finger applies more intense pressure, hold it a few seconds and then releases it.
Thumb Walk: The thumb walk uses the edge or tip of the thumb to "walk" along reflex zones.
EVIDENCE & RESEARCH
It is claimed that more than 100 ailments benefit from reflexology, though few clinical trials have been carried out, and there is almost no corroborating scientific evidence. An American study in 1991 at the University of California in Los Angeles indicated that women receiving weekly reflexology massage for premenstrual syndrome benefited from a 62 percent reduction in their symptoms.
CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL OPINION
Mainstream medicine does not endorse reflexology massage, due to a lack of research evidence and the unproved belief that applying pressure to the feet can improve organ function.
The theory of zones and energy channels is unsubstantiated by current scientific knowledge, but there is evidence that massage is relaxing. There are 7,200 nerve endings in each foot, and pressure on these may encourage the feelings of deep relaxation induced by reflexology. Massaging tense food muscles may allow blood to circulate more freely, distributing nutrients and oxygen throughout the body, and removing waste products. Provided any symptoms of illness are reported to a health care provider, reflexology is harmless. Moreover, the sense of relaxation that results after treatment is probably beneficial in itself.

PREPARATION
To relax the feet, the practitioner massages them with a dusting of talcum powder or with a little non-greasy cream. The foot is usually treated, since it is considered more sensitive than the hand.
CONSULTING A PRACTITIONER
The practitioner will initially as you about your past and present health and lifestyle. Most practitioners prefer to work on the foot, but the hand may be used if it is more suitable for the patient. If massaging the feet, the practitioner will ask you to take off your footwear and relax in a reclining chair or on a couch with your feet raised, while she examines your feet for indications of existing or potential health problems, possibly even suggesting that you see your health care provider for a medical checkup. She will stimulate the reflex points all over your foot, watching for any reaction of pain or tenderness. This is thought to indicate crystalline deposits beneath the skin, evidence to the practitioner of an imbalance in the corresponding area of the body; the greater the tenderness is, the greater the imbalance. Extra massage is given to tender areas to break down these deposits and free energy flow.
Vacuflex reflexology is a variation that stimulates reflex points with a suction pump linked to special boots and cups applied to specific body areas.
QUESTIONS FOR YOUR REFLEXOLOGIST
How long does a treatment session last?
A treatment usually last 45-60 minutes.
How many sessions will I need?
Depending on the problem, several weekly sessions may be advised. Many people have regular treatments to maintain well-being.
Will it be uncomfortable?
A reflex point may be tender if there is an imbalance, but this eases with massage. Pressure is adjusted to suit your sensitivity. Ticklishness is usually not a problem.
Will there be any aftereffects?
There may be a "healing crisis" (for example, a cough or rash). Practitioners believe this occurs as the body's natural healing mechanisms remove toxins.
TREATMENT
After relaxing the feet, the practitioner massages all areas of each foot with her hands and thumbs to stimulate the reflex points. Several techniques are used, particularly thumb walking, which allows gentle movements from one reflex point to another. The pad of the thumb moves over the skin, applying and releasing pressure before creeping along slightly and repeating the action. Also common is web pressing, in which pressure is applied to the web of skin between the toes.
![]()
SINUSES
Beginning at the base of the toe, the practitioner uses the thumb walk, her thumb slowly creeping up each toe toward the tip. Repeated stimulation on the sinus points on each toe aims to ease congestion and relieve pain.
![]()
NECK & THYROID GLAND
The practitioner presses below the first three toes of each foot with her thumb from beneath, then works across the top of the foot with her index finger. This seeks to help the neck and thyroid, and ease menstrual pain.
![]()
HIP & PELVIS
Using all four fingers, the practitioner works from the back of the foot up the outside edge of the heel, supporting the foot with the other hand. This is designed to relax the muscles and ease inflammation in the joints.
![]()
COLON & INTESTINE
Beginning on the right foot, the practitioner uses her thumb to creep repeatedly across the lower half of the sole. She will then work the same area on the left foot. These two actions together stimulate the whole digestive system.
A PATIENT'S EXPERIENCE
Miranda, 35, is a self-employed landscape gardener: "A traumatic year that included my mother's death, my husband's job layoff, and selling our house cause me to develop what the hospital diagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome. They offered no cure, so I tried a reflexologist at a local complementary health center. I had not had reflexology before and, unlike many people who find it relaxing, I found it quite painful, developing a headache after my first session. I gradually improved with weekly treatments; after each one the symptoms took longer to return, and finally disappeared. Now I would go back at the first sign of a problem."
![]()
SELF-HELP ON THE FEET
The foot is considered to be more sensitive than the hands, and some techniques can be applied in limited form to the foot as a self-help method. The side of the foot is said to mirror the spine, so massaging this area on both feet may help to ease backache and muscle tension in the back.
Use your thumb to massage up the inside edge of the foot, from the heel to the tip of the big toe.
SELF-HELP REFLEXOLOGY
Reflexologists usually prefer to work on the feet because they are more sensitive, but for self-help the hands are often more convenient. Reflexology on the hands can be practiced at any time, such as at work or on a train, to relieve stress or to promote healing of a specific ailment between visits to a practitioner.
![]()
SINUSES
Using the opposite hand, thumb walk several times up each finger and down the thumb to ease congestion. Repeat on the other hand.
![]()
COLON
Use the opposite thumb to massage across the palms several times. This stimulates the colon and intestine, to help relieve irritable bowel syndrome. Repeat on the other hand.
MoonDragon's Health Therapy: Massage Therapy
THE METAMORPHIC TECHNIQUE
Gentle massage of the feet, hands, and head is used in this approach, which aims to release "physical and emotional blocks" established during the previous prenatal period, and to foster creative and positive changes in a person's life.
MAIN USES
Long standing health problems. Physical and mental disabilities.
HISTORY
Robert St. John, a British naturopath and reflexologist, developed the Metamorphic technique (originally called prenatal therapy) in the 1960s while working in a school for children with learning disabilities. In 1979 one of his students, Gaston St.-Pierre, set up the Metamorphic Association in London.
CONSULTING A METAMORPHIC PRACTITIONER
Practitioners describe themselves as "catalysts" - agents of change who remain detached throughout the treatment, making no comment and offering no counseling. Like reflexology, from which it sprang, the Metamorphic technique is founded on the belief that the body is reflected in the feet and hands. The technique goes a step further, claiming that the physical, emotional, and mental patterns of our lives - even the ailments from which we will suffer - are established before birth and are mapped out on the side of the foot and hand (which represents the spine). No claims are made for curing any ailment, but the technique aims to facilitate a positive approach to life, encouraging "transformations" that loosen old ways of thinking and behaving and allow new ones to take their place.
You take off your footwear and sit comfortably while each foot in turn is manipulated by a practitioner, using light circular movements with particular emphasis on the side of the foot. The process is repeated on the hands and head. Many people report a feeling of relaxation and invigoration.
CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL OPINION
No research backs these theories, and some people doubt that such a profound outcome can result from massage. The technique is non-invasive and harmless, provided symptoms of disease are reported, but some health care providers feel it is wrong to raise hopes of treating chronic problems without evidence.
REFLEXOLOGY PRECAUTIONS
Check with your health care provider before treatment if you suffer from a thyroid disorder, diabetes, or any other long-term health problem.
Avoid reflexology in the first 3 months of pregnancy.
Tell your practitioner if you are taking medications, since reflexology is thought to increase excretions from the body and may interfere with the action of medication. For the same reason, you should tell your practitioner if you are also consulting an herbalist, homeopath, or aromatherapist.
TAKE CARE!
Reflexology massage should not be used by those suffering from a recent heart attack, thrombosis, acute inflammation, a foot injury, phlebitis or certain cancers. Also, if you have a pacemaker, kidney stones or gallstones, alert your health care practitioner.

Foot & Body Massager, Foot Fantasy, 1 Each (Colors Vary)
It has been said that Reflexology & Foot Massage are the natural pathway to a healthier body. When the body is out of balance, nerve endings in the feet can become painful as calcium and acid accumulates in crystalline deposits. Massaging these points breaks up these deposits and can help restore balance and promote healing. Reflexology is based on the principle that there are reflex points in the feet that correspond with various organs in the body. Through the application of pressure to these reflex points, tension is relieved thereby promoting better circulation and function to the organs. The Foot Fantasy is designed especially as an aid in achieving these results but is also a very effective and versatile Full Body Massager as well. Three components of the Foot Fantasy provide very different and uniquely effective functions. As shown in the following photos, the Omni Directional Massage Ball, Massage Power Ribs and Acupressure Point are integral components to one of the most amazing Foot & Body Massagers on the planet. You will find no other massage tool anywhere that offers you all these features. Mountain Rose Herbs, Hydrosols & Flower Waters
FLOWER WATERS (HYDROSOLS)
Hydrosols, also known as floral waters, hydroflorates, flower waters or distillates are produced from steam-distilling plant materials. Hydrosols have similar properties to essential oils but are much less concentrated. Unlike their "essential oil added to water" counterparts, true steam-distilled hydrosols contain all the beneficial components that whole plant materials have to offer.
Hydrosols are usually a by-product of essential oil production, but the highest quality comes from devoted distillers who, with artist-like precision, steam small batches of fresh floral and plant material strictly to produce hydrosol (the hydrosols offered by Mountain Rose Herbs are produced in this fashion). Most of their hydrosols are distilled in copper stills, (a few in stainless steel stills) and processed through certified organic methods in Washington, California and Europe. Hydrosols contain all of the essence of the plant in every drop, just like essential oils but in a milder form; making them suitable for all manner of applications where essential oils would be too strong. In most hydrosols there is less than 5 percent actual oil.
Please note that their aromas are mostly mild and subtle, sometimes bright and fragrant, and most hydrosols have an herby or grassy note indicative of their authentic and therapeutic properties. Wonderful as a facial splash, body perfume, deodorant or air freshener. Cool a hot flash, change your mood or add them to lotions and creams. Each of their 4 ounce hydrosols is packaged in an amber bottle with a black mister. The bulk 8 ounce, 16 oz ounce and 1 gallon waters are packaged in HDPE plastic bottles.
