HISTORY

Robert St. John, a British naturopath and reflexologist, developed the Metamorphic technique (originally called prenatal therapy) in the 1960s while working in a school for children with learning disabilities. In 1979 one of his students, Gaston St.-Pierre, set up the Metamorphic Association in London.

CONSULTING A METAMORPHIC PRACTITIONER

Practitioners describe themselves as "catalysts" - agents of change who remain detached throughout the treatment, making no comment and offering no counseling. Like reflexology, from which it sprang, the Metamorphic technique is founded on the belief that the body is reflected in the feet and hands. The technique goes a step further, claiming that the physical, emotional, and mental patterns of our lives - even the ailments from which we will suffer - are established before birth and are mapped out on the side of the foot and hand (which represents the spine). No claims are made for curing any ailment, but the technique aims to facilitate a positive approach to life, encouraging "transformations" that loosen old ways of thinking and behaving and allow new ones to take their place.

You take off your footwear and sit comfortably while each foot in turn is manipulated by a practitioner, using light circular movements with particular emphasis on the side of the foot. The process is repeated on the hands and head. Many people report a feeling of relaxation and invigoration.

CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL OPINION

No research backs these theories, and some people doubt that such a profound outcome can result from massage. The technique is non-invasive and harmless, provided symptoms of disease are reported, but some health care providers feel it is wrong to raise hopes of treating chronic problems without evidence.

SELF-HELP REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexologists usually prefer to work on the feet because they are more sensitive, but for self-help the hands are often more convenient. Reflexology on the hands can be practiced at any time, such as at work or on a train, to relieve stress or to promote healing of a specific ailment between visits to a practitioner.

Hydrosols have similar properties to essential oils but are much less concentrated. Unlike their "essential oil added to water" counterparts, true steam-distilled hydrosols contain all the beneficial components that whole plant materials have to offer. Hydrosols are usually a by-product of essential oil production, but the highest quality comes from devoted distillers who, with artist-like precision, steam small batches of fresh floral and plant material strictly to produce hydrosol (the hydrosols offered by Mountain Rose Herbs are produced in this fashion). Most of their hydrosols are distilled in copper stills, (a few in stainless steel stills) and processed through certified organic methods in Washington, California and Europe.
