REFLEXOLOGY INTRODUCTION

Foot massage has been practiced for centuries, but reflexologists believe that it can do more than simply aid relaxation. According to reflexologists, the feet and the hands are a mirror of the body, and pressure placed on specific reflex points on them can be used to affect the corresponding areas of the body in order to stimulate natural healing powers and promote well-being. THE METAMORPHIC TECHNIQUE

Gentle massage of the feet, hands, and head is used in this approach, which aims to release "physical and emotional blocks" established during the previous prenatal period, and to foster creative and positive changes in a person's life.

HISTORY

Robert St. John, a British naturopath and reflexologist, developed the Metamorphic technique (originally called prenatal therapy) in the 1960s while working in a school for children with learning disabilities. In 1979 one of his students, Gaston St.-Pierre, set up the Metamorphic Association in London.

CONSULTING A METAMORPHIC PRACTITIONER

Practitioners describe themselves as "catalysts" - agents of change who remain detached throughout the treatment, making no comment and offering no counseling. Like reflexology, from which it sprang, the Metamorphic technique is founded on the belief that the body is reflected in the feet and hands. The technique goes a step further, claiming that the physical, emotional, and mental patterns of our lives - even the ailments from which we will suffer - are established before birth and are mapped out on the side of the foot and hand (which represents the spine). No claims are made for curing any ailment, but the technique aims to facilitate a positive approach to life, encouraging "transformations" that loosen old ways of thinking and behaving and allow new ones to take their place.

You take off your footwear and sit comfortably while each foot in turn is manipulated by a practitioner, using light circular movements with particular emphasis on the side of the foot. The process is repeated on the hands and head. Many people report a feeling of relaxation and invigoration.

CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL OPINION

No research backs these theories, and some people doubt that such a profound outcome can result from massage. The technique is non-invasive and harmless, provided symptoms of disease are reported, but some health care providers feel it is wrong to raise hopes of treating chronic problems without evidence.

SELF-HELP REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexologists usually prefer to work on the feet because they are more sensitive, but for self-help the hands are often more convenient. Reflexology on the hands can be practiced at any time, such as at work or on a train, to relieve stress or to promote healing of a specific ailment between visits to a practitioner.

SINUSES Using the opposite hand, thumb walk several times up each finger and down the thumb to ease congestion. Repeat on the other hand.

COLON Use the opposite thumb to massage across the palms several times. This stimulates the colon and intestine, to help relieve irritable bowel syndrome. Repeat on the other hand.

Check with your health care provider before treatment if you suffer from a thyroid disorder, diabetes, or any other long-term health problem.

Avoid reflexology in the first 3 months of pregnancy.

Tell your practitioner if you are taking medications, since reflexology is thought to increase excretions from the body and may interfere with the action of medication. For the same reason, you should tell your practitioner if you are also consulting an herbalist, homeopath, or aromatherapist.

TAKE CARE! Reflexology massage should not be used by those suffering from a recent heart attack, thrombosis, acute inflammation, a foot injury, phlebitis or certain cancers. Also, if you have a pacemaker, kidney stones or gallstones, alert your health care practitioner.
