CHELATION THERAPY
CHELATION THERAPY
Chelation therapy was first used in the 1940s by the US Navy to treat lead poisoning, and is still practiced principally in the US, albeit controversially. It involves the administration of a synthetic form of the amino acid EDTA to "chelate" or chemically remove, heavy metals and toxins from the bloodstream, and break down calcium deposits or plaque from the artery walls.
The patient is hooked up to an intravenous drip containing a solution of EDTA, vitamins and minerals. Treatment is carried out by a qualified practitioner, and tests on circulation and blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, and kidney and organ function are taken throughout the treatment. A session lasts about 3 hours and are given 1 to 3 times per week, and 20 to 30 sessions are recommended.
Chelation therapy is used to treat circulatory disorders, and is also practiced preventively to maintain a healthy bloodstream. Many studies have been carried out on it, but few of these have been scientifically controlled.

OXYGEN / OZONE THERAPY
Health care providers began to treat infection using oxygen over a century ago; the first recorded use of oxygen therapy was in 1879 by a French practitioner, Dr. J.A. Fontaine. The treatment is popular today in Russia and Germany, but does not have official approval in the US, and is almost unknown in the UK and Australia.
Oxygen / ozone therapy covers a wide range of practices, all of which involve administering oxygen as a gas or in water to help body cells and tissues function efficiently. Ozone therapy is said to oxygenate cells and trigger chemical reactions that destroy viruses and bacteria.
Treatment is carried out by medically qualified therapists, and is given through an artery or intravenously, by mouth, via the rectum or vagina, by inhalation or absorption, or by injection into the joints or muscles. Treatment could comprise 2-3 sessions for a minor infection or 30-40 sessions for more serious conditions.
Oxygen therapy is claimed to kill cancer cells; it has also been used to treat strokes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and allergies. Ozone therapy has been used to heal wounds and treat bacterial and viral diseases. It is a controversial AIDS treatment.
COLONIC HYDROTHERAPY
This detoxification process, also called colonic irrigation or colon therapy, was reputedly known in ancient Egypt, China, and India, but the method that is popular in the West today has its origins in 19th century European spas. Practitioners claim fecal matter can cling to the wall of the large bowel (colon) and may be reabsorbed into the bloodstream. They aim to remove this waste material by flushing it away with purified water.
The patient lies on a treatment table, wearing a gown with an opening at the back. A tube is inserted into the rectum, and filtered water (possibly with added substances) is administered under gentle pressure. The patient holds the water in the colon for about 2 minutes. Then the pressure is released, and the water and any dislodged wastes matter flows away. This process may be repeated several times. Treatment often consists of 4 to 8 sessions, each lasting 40 to 50 minutes.
The therapy is used to treat conditions such as digestive disorders, headaches, chronic fatigue, skin problems, fibroids, and backache. Conventional medical opinion is divided toward colonic hydrotherapy.
TIBETAN MEDICINE
Dating back to the 7th century, this system of medicine is based on similar principles to Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is not well known in the West but is attracting increasing interest.
Practitioners believe that all body functions are governed by three "humors" (air, bile, and phlegm), and use pulse and tongue testing, urine analysis, and observation to diagnose illness. Treatment includes herbal remedies, dietary and lifestyle advice, massage, and acupuncture. Religious ritual also forms a major part of treatment. Sessions last 60 to 90 minutes and the number required depends on the condition and the methods used. Tibetan medicine claims to treat any condition.
RADIONICS
This form of distant healing was pioneered in the early 1900s by US neurologist Dr. Albert Abrams. There was opposition to his work from the medical establishment in the US, where radionics is still illegal, but in 1924 a UK medical committee found his diagnostic methods could be surprisingly accurate.
Radionics practitioners aim to tap into the "vibrational frequencies" of a patient's "bioenergy" to analyze the cause of illness. Patients might not meet their practitioner. They complete a questionnaire on their medical history and supply a drop of blood or hair sample (known as the "witness"). The practitioner places the witness on a radionic "black box", which has frequency settings "tuned" to the vibrational levels of various disorders. He may also dowse the patient's questionnaire with a pendulum. After diagnosis, the practitioner uses the machine to "broadcast" healing energy to the patient, and may also suggest homeopathic or Bach Flower Remedies, or color therapy. In theory, radionics can treat any condition, although most conventional health care practitioners are extremely skeptical.
PSIONICS
Developed in 1968, psionics resembles radionics, and is said to work by detecting and counteracting disruptions in a patient's "bioenergy". Practitioners dowse the patient to diagnose illness, for which homeopathic and anthroposophical remedies are prescribed.
PRECAUTIONS
Chelation therapy may cause weakness or dizziness due to low blood sugar levels.
Oxygen / ozone therapy may cause breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, gas bubbles in the bloodstream, or inflammation of the lower intestine.
Seek medical advice before using colonic hydrotherapy if you have a bowel disease.
