Mind & Emotion Therapies
Flotation Therapy
Developed in the US during the 1970s, flotation therapy is a way of isolating body and mind from external stimuli in order to induce deep relaxation. Treatment involves lying in an enclosed and soundproofed tank of water that has sufficient salts and minerals dissolved in it to enable the body to float effortlessly. The therapy is often used to treat stress and addictions.
MAIN USES OF FLOTATION THERAPY
Anxiety, stress, ulcers.
Drug Addiction and Alcohol Addiction.
Heart disease.
Headaches, migraines.
Back pain and muscle fatigue.
Enhancing the immune system.
HISTORY
Flotation therapy developed from the work of Dr. John C. Lilly, an American neurophysiologist and psychoanalyst, who began research in 1954 into how the brain acted without external stimulation. He devised flotation tanks, initially known as "sensory deprivation chambers" until their therapeutic benefits in helping people achieve deep relaxation were recognized. Flotation is well established in the US and is also practiced in the UK, the rest of Europe, and Australia, often as an adjunct to meditation, hypnotherapy, or visualization.
CONSULTING A PRACTITIONER
Most flotation tanks are installed in health clubs or "float centers", in private rooms containing the tank and a shower, which you use before and after flotation. Tanks are about 8 feet long and 4 feet wide, with 10 inches of water. Most people float naked, but you may prefer to wear a bathing suit. The practitioner will give you earplugs to use. Flotation takes place in complete or semidarkness, but at any time you can switch on a light, and open the door.

During flotation, external sensory stimulation such as light or sound, is removed. The water is kept at skin temperature (93.5°F / 34.2°C).
During flotation, the body and mind enter a profound state of relaxation. The brain releases endorphins, which act as natural painkillers, and you may experience mild euphoria. Your mind also becomes more receptive to suggestion and daydream. Audio speakers inside the tank may play relaxation or other therapeutic tapes. Many tanks have two-way microphones allowing you to talk to the practitioner of hypnotherapy or psychotherapy; some also have video screens. Sessions last 1 to 2.5 hours and may be repeated as often as you like.
CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL OPINION
Most conventional health care providers would accept the healing potential of flotation therapy, especially since research indicates that it has the ability to reduce stress hormones in the body and affect psychological states.
PRECAUTIONS
Make sure you have professional supervision during flotation if you are susceptible to anxiety, depression, or phobias, especially claustrophobia.
Flotation is not suitable for those with a history of psychosis.
