Homeopathic Remedies
TAKING A PATIENT'S MEDICAL HISTORY
An extensive patient history is taken and the patient's physical and psychological symptoms are observed, then an initial prescription is made. The case-taking is very important since it is the actual leader to a perfect diagnosis. The details with respect to mental and physical make-up of the patient is assessed by the practitioner by asking and enquiring into the intimate details of the patients. If the medication does not have the desired effect or if the symptoms persist, a second analysis is done and a second prescription is given. This process continues until the correct medication for the underlying ailment is found. Constitutional treatment is generally used for chronic problems; acute, or short-term, ailments are usually treated with remedies specific to the illness.
INDIVIDUALITY & CONSTITUTIONS
As we are aware that no two individuals are alike so the treatment varies from individual to individual. The majority of homeopaths practice "constitutional" homeopathy, based on the idea that each person's constitution - or mental, physical and emotional makeup - may need to be treated along with any specific ailments.

SAMUEL HAHNEMANN
"The physician's high and only mission is to restore the sick to health, to cure, as it is termed."
Born in Meissen, Saxony, April 10, 1755. Hahnemann grew up during an era of tremendous upheaval and rebirth in Europe which was centered in Germany with the "Enlightenment" movement, which encouraged freedom of thought and opinion. He was born into a poor family and was taught early by his father never to learn passively but to question everything. Hahnemann later developed his thirst for knowledge into a profoundly deep-reaching gift. He virtually read all medical books previously published, in nine languages.
Hahnemann became a medical practitioner in 1791 and practiced conventional medicine for nine years until he discovered, quite by accident, that by his ingesting repeated doses of Chinchona bark (to test Cullens theory on the effectiveness of China in treating Malaria) he would develop the symptoms of malaria, which the bark was used to treat. Thus the first homeopathic proving, and the discovery of the first law of homeopathy: Similia similibus curentur, or "like cures like".
Hahnemann named this newfound therapy "Homeo" (similar) "pathy" (suffering). He began conducting provings with many of the medicines used in allopathy but his methods were met with disbelief and ridicule by his contemporaries.
Although his patients were experiencing profound cures which solidly verified his theories, Hahnemann was marked as an outcast because his method of single and minimum dosage was threatening the financial foundation of the powerful apothecaries. Hahnemann focused on reducing the dose to the point where there were no side effects but he was unsatisfied because this step further rendered the dose insufficient in strength to act. He experimented with a new method whereby after each dilution he would shake the substance vigorously. This he called "succussion" thus developing the energetic aspect of homeopathy. It is unknown how Hahnemann reasoned this (still scientifically unexplainable) method of "potentization".
In 1810, Hahnemann published the first of six editions of The Organon which clearly defined his homeopathic philosophy. In the same year, 80,000 men were killed when Napoleon attacked Liepzig. Hahnemann's homeopathic treatment of the survivors, and also of the victims of the great typhus epidemic that followed the siege, was highly successful and further spread his, and homeopathy's, reputation. Hahnemann taught at the Liepzig University where his lectures would often shift into sharp tongued diatribes against the dangerous practices of conventional medicine, thus nicknamed "Raging Hurricane" by his students. By 1821 Hahnemann had proven 66 remedies and published his Materia Medica Pura in six volumes. In 1831, Cholera swept through Central Europe. Hahnemann published papers on the homeopathic treatment of the disease and instigated the first widespread usage of homeopathy which had a 96 percent cure rate as compared to allopathy's 41 percent rate.
In 1834, Hahnemann met the avant-garde Parisian, Mademoiselle Marie Melanie d'Hervilly. They were married (his second marriage, her first) within six months, and settled in Paris. In spite of the fact he was more than twice her age, they remained very intimate, she was working by his side in his active practice until July 2, 1843 when Hahnemann died, in Paris, at the age of eighty-eight.
HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES
USING HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES
Classically, only one homeopathic medicine is used at a time. Two persons having similar complaint for example chronic rhinitis may not have the same drug prescribed because they may constitutionally vary. Individuals also come with definite temperaments under which they can be classified. There are five known temperaments - Sanguine, Bilious, Lymphatic, Leuco-phlegmatic and Nervous.
Each individual can be classified by the homeopath in the category to which he belongs. And accordingly the prescriptions are made after a detail study of the physical and mental make-up of the patient which is assessed by various questions that enquire in to the various details especially into the mental state of mind.
Mind: This is the most important aspect of Homeopathic case-taking which is directly related to the treatment. The Mind is studied at different levels - The Will, Emotion/Understanding and the Intellect.
Will: This includes the wants of an individual. The cravings, aversions, desires come under this heading.
Emotion / Understanding: The emotional level of the mind is exhibited at this level. The individual emotional level can be assessed by analyzing the level of his anger, irritation, nervousness and his capacity to tackle emotional situations.
Intellect: This gives an assessment of the intelligence of the person. It evaluates the level of perception of the individual especially with respect to situations he faces.
THE LAW OF SIMILARS
According to the law of similars, or "like cures like", patients symptoms are a reliable guide to the remedy needed to activate the self-healing power of their vital force. Hahnemann applied this principle to his homeopathic remedies; to stimulate the vital force to fight an illness, the remedies are derived from substances that induce symptoms similar to those of the illness. For instance, eyebright, an irritant herb, is used in a remedy to soothe sensitive eyes, while belladonna is used to treat scarlet fever, because the symptoms of belladonna poisoning are very similar to those of scarlet fever.
Potentization is a process that involves a series of precise dilutions and succussions (a vigorous shaking action). A substance has to undergo this process to be useful as a homeopathic remedy. Potentization is very important, because the repeated process of dilution and succussion brings about an energetic change that gives the substance a deeper curative effect. Repeated dilution removes all chance of chemical toxicity, allowing homeopathic use of many substances that would otherwise not be safe to take as medicine.
THE LAW OF POTENTIZATION
Diluting doses repeatedly limits their potential to cause side effects and helps to avoid so-called "aggravations," although these are still experienced by some patients. Hahnemann observed that the more a substance was diluted, the more potent it seemed to become. Remedies might even contain nothing of the original substance.
A remedy is "potentized" by diluting it on either the decimal scale (X) with a dilution factor of 1:10 or the centesimal scale (C) with a dilution factor of 1:100.
1. Remedies are made from plant, animal, and mineral extracts. First the material is chopped or ground roughly.
2. The material is soaked in a mix of 90% alcohol and 10% distilled water and left to stand for 2-4 weeks.
3. The jar is sealed with an airtight lid and the mixture is shaken from time to time to dissolve the material.
4. The infused mixture is strained into a dark glass bottle, after which it is known as the "mother tincture".
5. One drop of the tincture is diluted with 99 drops of alcohol, then shaken rapidly - a process called "succussion".
6. After repeated dilution and succussion to the required potency, a few drops are added to lactose tablets.
7. The jar is then swirled gently to ensure that each tablet is properly impregnated with the potentized remedy.
8. The homeopathic tablets are placed in an airtight bottle made of dark glass, and stored away from direct sunlight.
POTENTIZING A HOMEOPATHIC REMEDY
"Remedy" is the name used for a homeopathic medicine. Remedies are made from substances that have been found to produce a reaction in the body. Many remedies are made from substances normally regarded as poisonous, such as arsenic and bee venom. However, they are administered in such minute quantities that they have a stimulating effect on the body rather than a harmful effect.
To make a homeopathic remedy, the original medicinal material is chopped or ground. It is then soaked in a mix of 90% alcohol and 10% distilled water. This is left to stand for up to four weeks in a sealed jar. From time to time it is shaken.
Finally it is strained into a dark bottle and is known as "mother tincture". Just one drop of tincture is diluted in 99 drops of alcohol with 10 succussions. This creates the 1c. One drop out of that is then diluted in 99 drops of alcohol and succussed 10 times to obtain the 2c potency. After each dilution the solution is succussed. This shaking activates the remedy.
After 12 repetitions there is no physical substance of the original material left, no molecules at all, just the energy. This is why homeopathy is pure energy-medicine.
The remedies get stronger the more they are diluted and succussed.
The substance in which they are diluted has a memory.
The higher potencies of 200c and up are used in violent, acute situations. The potency 30c is in the middle. Homeopaths use lower potencies like the 6c or x for the slow and steady healing of chronic problems. An x potency has less potential, more substance, more effect on the physical body, and is often used in organ support.
The solution is then made into pills, powders, tinctures or creams.

The safety and non-toxicity of homeopathic remedies is reassuring; however, they still must be chosen carefully on the basis of specific information - and used correctly - or they may affect the symptoms only superficially, or have no effect at all. Homeopathic remedies are not selected simply to treat an isolated symptom or a named disease. To work correctly, the remedy must be chosen to match the way the individual's body system expresses its unique response to the current stress and illness. Even within the same diagnosis, different people's bodies will respond to different remedies.
HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR COMMON MINOR AILMENTS
Homeopathy has a significant role in both curative and preventive medicine. It treats the cause of the problem rather than just the symptoms. It can be used effectively in various conditions seen commonly. The drugs can be safely given to people of all ages. However in serious conditions it is best to consult your Homeopathic practitioner.
Natrum Phos (Hyperacidity): Creamy white coating at back of tongue. Sour risings. Flatulence with vomiting of acrid fluid.
Nux Vomica: Nausea in the morning, sour taste in the morning. Flatulance with bitter eructations. Stomach is very sensitive. Sensation of weight in the stomach.
Iris Vers: Sour and bitter belching. Acidity causing sick headaches.
Robinia: Pronounced acidity; frontal headache; burning pains in stomach. Stools and discharges smell sour. Acid vomiting. Acidity in children. Calcarea Phos: Emaciated children; slow teething, teeth decay even as they appear. Diarrhea during dentition.
Calcarea Carb: Pale, flabby, fat children; teeth slow to erupt, gums pale and swollen. Dampness of skin - sweat on forehead is a leading indication.

Chamomilla: Irritable, fretful, spiteful child; pain intolerable, greenish, offensive diarrhea. One cheek red and hot, the other pale and cold.
Five Phos: A biochemic mixture that may be given during the teething period. Aloe Soc: Unable to control - has to rush to pass stool, which gushes like water from a hydrant. Cutting, cramping pains around navel, worse eating or drinking.
Arsenic Album: Diarrhea from chilling the stomach with cold substances; diarrhea from fruits; diarrhea from bad meats. Great restlessness; thirst for small sips of cold water at frequent intervals. Small, dark-colored, offensive stools; great prostration after every stool. Diarrhea immediately on eating.
Podophyllum: Stools very offensive, watery, pasty; yellow, or undigested matter; chalky offensive stools; stool forcibly expelled. Painless diarrhea. "Camp diarrhea" from drinking impure water.
Argentum Nitricum: Diarrhea from eating sweets. Nervous diarrhea from anticipation. Stools green like chopped spinach, with great distension of abdomen; flatulence. Liquids seem to pass straight through.
Nux Vomica: Diarrhea from over indulging in the "good life" - sedentary lifestyle, rich food, drinking and keeping odd hours. Frequent desire for stool, but little passes at a time, straining and discomfort. Diarrhea in infants from artificial food; vomiting and purging without actual inflammation. Give in low potency.
Colocynth: Diarrhea with intense colic, better from warmth and pressure; worse emotional excitement. Brown, watery stools after eating or drinking. Aconite Nap: A very acute remedy. Early stage. Fever from chill from sudden fall in temperature, or from exposure to cold, dry air. High fever; thirst for large quantities of cold water. Marked chilliness; restlessness. Drenching sweat on parts lain on, relieving symptoms.
Belladonna: High heat, burns the examining hand. Face flushed, red; eyes bright, stuporous. Delirium. Throbbing carotids; headache.
Gelsemium: Face flushed, dark. Headache from nape of neck up. No thirst. Wants to be left alone. Chills up and down back. Magnesium Phos: For severe cramping pains from "gas". Take frequent doses in hot water until relieved.
Argentum Nitricum: Belching after every meal; flatulent dyspepsia; abdomen seems full of wind, which comes out in eructations.
Carbo Veg: Flatulence pressing downwards, worse from eating or drinking, worse on lying down. Eructations give relief for a while. Aggravation from fatty foods. Better from being fanned. Arnica: First and foremost, for the pain and healing.
Symphytum/ Calcarea Phos: For quick knitting of bones. Arnica: Bleeding from injury or trauma. Bleeding after tooth extraction.
Ipecac: Bleeding of bright red blood from any part; constant steady flow; accompanied by nausea.
Hamamelis: Dark blood, passive flow; bleeding from nose, lungs, bowels, hemorrhoids, bladder, when venous bleeding.
Kreosote: People with hemorrhagic diathesis - bleed easily and much from slightest cause. Nosebleed, spitting up blood, blood in urine etc. Blood dark and oozing. Natrum Mur: Headache with rise of sun, stopping at sunset. Headache with sweat, the more the pain, the more the sweat. Headache of school girls or boys, headache from straining the eyes. Hammering headache.
Nux Vomica: Headache over eyes with vertigo. Frontal headache better by pressing. Headache in the sunshine.
Actea Spicata: Rheumatic pain in the small joints and in the wrist, fingers, ankle and toes. Pain in the knee. Tearing pain in the loins.
Belladonna: Throbbing, bursting headache, often preceded by blindness or flashes of light. Headache in forehead and temples. Pains appear and disappear suddenly. Headaches from sun exposure.
Bryonia Album: Headache on stooping as though brain would burst through forehead; worse from motion. Headache from playing or watching play.
Ruta G: Headache from eyestrain; weary pain after reading; pain above eyebrows.
Gelsemium: Dull, heavy pains in head, especially at vertex, with throbbing in temples, heavy eyes and giddiness better after urination.
Kali Phos: Headache in nervous individuals, worn out by fatigue. Occipital headache, better on arising. Headache of students. Headaches relieved by gentle motion.
Silicia: Chronic headache with sensitivity to pressure, noise, motion, light; better from warmth (as from wrapping head in a shawl). As a preventive, use Influenzinum, two doses a day for two or three days.
Gelsemium: Headache, bodyache, chills up and down spine; red face; weakness, relaxation; no thirst.
Arsenic Album: Teasing cough, worse at night. Thirst, restlessness; anguish; headache. Nux Vomica: Sedentary lifestyle, indiscriminate eating and drinking habits. Cramping pain, flatulence.
Calcarea Carb: Ravenous hunger, with desire for indigestible substances. Heartburn; waterbrash. Milk disagrees. Swelling of epigastrium. Tight clothes increase discomfort. Abdomen hard and distended. Stools hard, white and offensive.
Pulsatilla: Indigestion from rich/fatty foods. Nausea with little vomiting, moist, white-coated tongue. No pain. Feeling of distension; clothes have to be loosened. Thirstlessness.
Antimonium Crud: Tongue coated white. Food tastes fetid. Belching. Eructations of taste of food eaten. Arnica: The first remedy to be given for any injury. If skin is unbroken, apply the tincture as well-used immediately after injury gives best results, and cuts recovery time, eases pain and minimizes any ill-effects from injury. Continue with any other indicated medicine.
Calendula: For lacerated wounds, cuts, etc. Dilute before use (1 part Calendula to 3 parts distilled water) since it stings in the tincture form. The ointment may be used instead. The remedy may also be taken internally.
Rescue Remedy (Bach Remedies): For shock and panic after accidents.
Ruta G: For sprains.
Rhus Tox: Injury to tendons and ligaments. Muscular strain. For pain that is better for continued movement.
Ledum Pal: Punctured wounds. Black eye.
Hypericum: Injuries to areas rich in nerves, e.g. the coccyx, fingertips, etc.
Aconite: In injury to eyes (along with Arnica). Arnica montana: Bruised pains as though from blow to body (even if there has been no injury). Any pain due to injury or trauma.
Bryonia: Pains that are worse from movement; better lying on painful side.
Rhus Tox: Rheumatic pains; pains from cold and damp, better from movement.
Ruta G: For Sciatica, Pain and stiffness in the wrist and hand. Pain in the back going down in the thighs and hips. Pain in the bones of feet and ankle.
Belladonna: Congestive throbbing pains; pains appear and disappear suddenly. Intense heat, redness of parts.
Magnesium Phos: Spasmodic pains in particular, but also for almost every type of pain, excepting burning pains. Pains better from pressure and warmth.
Hypericum: Pain from injury to nerves - blow to spine, crushed fingers, etc.
Arsenic Album: Burning pains; restlessness, fear of death. Nux Vomica: Sedentary lifestyle, indiscriminate eating and drinking habits. Cramping pain, flatulence.
Hepar Sulph: Extreme sensitivity of skin. Cannot even tolerate the feel of the wind. Unhealthy skin - every little injury suppurates. When suppuration is impending or inevitable. Low potency encourages suppuration, high potency aborts.
Calcarea Sulph: Action similar to Hepar Sulph, only deeper. Cuts, wounds, bruises, unhealthy, discharging pus, not healing. While Hepar S. cannot tolerate dry, cold air, Calc. Sulph better for dry, cold air.
Silicea: Promotes expulsion of foreign bodies from tissues. Long lasting suppuration. Ripens abscesses. Ailments related to the suppurative process. Chilly patient. Plantago Q: Rub on gum, apply on cotton and insert into cavity, or apply on cotton and hold externally, on cheek. May also be taken in potency.
Kreosote: Cavities present, but no apparent inflammation or gumboil. Give to start with, as Kreo cures many cases of toothache. Liquid may be put on cotton and inserted into cavity.
Calcarea Carb: Toothache aggravated by cold air; toothache only when eating.
Chamomilla: Toothache worse from warm food or drink, worse at night; pains intolerable.
Ferrum Phos: Toothache better for cold water/air.
Magnesium Phos: Toothache better for warmth; neuralgic pains. Ipecac: Tongue clean, moist mouth, much saliva; vomits food, bile, blood, mucous. Hiccups. Faintness and collapse. Stabbing pains in stomach. Nausea not relieved by vomiting.
Antimonium Crud: Vomiting as soon as eats or drinks. Tongue coated white.
Antimonium Tart: Tongue coated white; nausea, retching and vomiting, especially after food, with faintness and prostration. Vomiting in any position except lying on right side.
Arsenic Alb: Irritable stomach; gastritis. Unable to retain water.
Kreosote: Nausea after eating; vomiting 2 hours after eating; vomiting with putrid stool.
Nux Vomica: Feeling of weight in Epigastric region, with difficult breathing. Nausea with retching. Colicky pains. Coldness; shivering anxiety. Cina: Ravenous hunger; sickly, pale child, picking of nose, grinding teeth in sleep, tendency to convulsions.
Natrum Phos: Creamy yellow coating at back of tongue, all discharges smell sour. Acidity.
Teucrim: Much irritation in rectum. Thread worms.
Chenopodium: Round worms. Follow with dose of castor oil.
Filax Mas: Tapeworms. Follow dose with castor oil.
CHILDREN'S HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES
Homeopathic specific single remedy tablets or liquids are used safely during pregnancy, babies, toddlers, and children. These remedies are used by parents with young children. Natural remedies are very useful for common complaints like colic, teething, restlessness at bedtime, irritability, fevers, first-aid treatment for scraps, pain, bruises etc.
Stool and mucous discharges are sour smelling. Worse after midnight and upon waking in the morning. Glands in front of the ears swell. Complain of heat, noises, and a pulsating sensation in the ears.
Cannot bear to be uncovered. Hepar Sulphur also acts upon the respiratory mucous membrane. Indicated in choking cough. Sensation of a clot of mucous or internal swelling when swallowing.
The sensation of something caught in the throat, with the feeling of a splinter in the throat. Person also becomes more sensitive and irritated by touch, etc.
This child has a sensitive digestive system with bloating, indigestion, gas, constipation. Desires sweet things.
Although they have good appetites and eat more than an average, they do not put on weight.
This child has the changeable symptoms, physically and emotionally. May be happy one minute and very sad the next minute.
Pulsatilla is indicated for earaches with red swollen external ears. Pain is worse at night and in a warm room. Earaches following colds.
The mucous discharge is yellow or yellow-green and bland. Pulsatilla children gets acute colds in the head. It is a remedy for both acute and constitutional treatment.
Stool and mucous discharges are smelly. Rattling of mucus.
Child complains most when standing, at 11 am, from the warmth of bed, from baths. Irritable child.
Worse on left side. Sensation of blocked ear, worse after blowing the nose with cracking noise in ear.
HOMEOPATHY & PREGNANCY
Homeopathic medicines will have no side effects on you or your baby. You can use the medicines without any fear under the supervision of your homeopathic practitioner. The following remedies are administered for some of the common symptoms of pregnancy described below.
Nausea, Highly recommended for vomiting in pregnancy. There is marked aversion to all kind of food. Aggravation motion. Feels better lying on the back. Fickle appetite.
Remedy: Robinia
Marked acidity: Acrid erructations. Nausea with sour vomiting.
Pain in the back and limbs. Feeling sore and bruised from over-exertion. Everything that she sleeps on feels hard.
Remedy: Rhus tox
General restlessness. Stiffness of joints. Aching in the legs even while resting. You just cannot get comfortable in bed and toss and turn all night.
Weakness, trembling and twitching of legs whilst you sleep. You may feel generally more tired than usual.
Nervous exhaustion from overwork, mental strain, worry or over-excitement makes it difficult to fall asleep.
Remedy: Gelsemium
Anxiety and fear, difficult to sleep. Your body aches and feels very heavy Emotional excitement leading to bodily ailments.
Remedy: Aconite
Restlessness and anxious with vivid dreams. Great fear about your labor.
Remedy: Sepia
Worn out from doing too much family work. Feeling "saggy" - heavy, tired, irritable and depressed. Wakes at 3 am, sleepless and lie there with miserable thoughts.
Ailments due to overwork. Sleeplessness. Wakes up in early hours feeling tense and anxious and cannot sleep till dawn. You get caught up in a cycle of tension, insomnia, and irritability.
Heartburn with burning pains, hiccups and burping which are worse at night.
General sluggishness. Cramps in the legs or foot at night while sleeping or waking in the morning.
Remedy: Mag phos
Cramps anywhere in the body that are better for heat and firm pressure. General restlessness and insomnia.
Nose and sinuses are blocked up at night especially in a stuffy room. Feels better in the morning (when it becomes runny) and much better in the fresh and open air.
Remedy: Kali bich
Blocked-up nose and sinuses. Dropping from the posterior nares. Mucus is sticky in the morning. Difficulty in breathing due to dryness.
Itching (without a rash), burning which is bad after a hot bath or at night in bed worse scratching leading to insomnia.
HOMEOPATHIC OINTMENTS
Arnica: Used for pain in general. Sore, bruised, lame feeling.
Apis Mel: A must to have available for bee stings, mosquito bites, other insect bites. Swelling, or puffiness of various parts, edema.
Symphytum: Healing comfrey in a homeopathic base. Used externally as a dressing for sores and ulcers.
Hamamelis: Swollen irritated hemorrhoids during pregnancy. Varicose veins on the calves.
Urtica Urens: First Aid in a jar. Excellent for scrapes, cuts, diaper rash, cracked and dry lips and hands. Dry or sore skin from wind burn or Winter cold
THE HOMEOPATHIC HOME KIT
The following remedies are advised to be kept for minor illnesses, first-aid and as specific remedies. Homeopathic remedies have an almost indefinite shelf-life. Unless the pills turn brown, they are quite safe to take even years after purchase. Tinctures may be made into ointments by mixing into pure petroleum jelly, using a sterile instrument.

Arnica: Used for pain in general. Sore, bruised, lame feeling.
Symphytum: Healing comfrey in a homeopathic base. Used externally as a dressing for sores and ulcers.
Hypericum: Good for injuries that involve pain to nerve endings e.g. finger slammed in doors. Used for bruises. Also very soothing to dry skin, eczema.
Thuja: Remedy for warts, fungus (ears, feet, nails), athletes foot.
Aesulus: Excellent for painful hemorrhoids during pregnancy.
Rhus tox: Swelling of joints. Used in Sciatica. Also in rheumatic pain. Pain aggravated sitting, better when in motion.
Ruta G: Swelling of Joints. Arthritis and synovial affections.
