Laboratory analysis of strands of hair has been used since the 19th century to assess levels of minerals in the body. Hair Analysis is a simple diagnostic technique that is based on the idea that hair provides vital clues about nutritional imbalances elsewhere in the body.

Taking A Hair Sample in 1894 Germany

Cutting a sample of hair in a German pharmacy in 1894.

These chemicals are absorbed from food and the environment, and many are needed for good health, but others, such as mercury and lead, are toxic if they accumulate in the body. Mineral deficiencies and toxic excesses are said to contribute to allergies, digestive problems, depression, and other ailments. Practitioners such as nutritional therapists and clinical ecologists, who treat patients using mineral supplements and detoxification diets, often use hair analysis.

Conventional medical practitioners do not consider hair analysis to be a reliable test of mineral concentrations in the body. However, it may offer information about long-term exposure to toxic chemicals and heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, but they do not believe that it to be able to reveal allergies or diagnose diseases.

Hair analysis has been used to diagnose heavy metal poisoning (such as arsenic poisoning) as well as determining whether or not someone has been using certain drugs (such as cocaine) and the length of time the person as been exposed to these substances.

Hair is made of a protein known as keratin. This contains sulfur, which traps minerals from the blood supply feeding the root of the hair. Strands of hair retain minerals even after being removed from the scalp. Hair grows at a rate of about 1/2 inch (1 centimeter) a month, and hair analysis works with samples taken from the 1-1/2 inches (3 centimeters) of hair closest to the scalp. The sample is sent to a reliable laboratory, where it is washed and rinsed intensively, then burned and the ash analyzed.

    Taking A Hair Sample

A sample taken from the nape of the neck, near the root, contains minerals absorbed by the hair during the previous 3 months.

Hair analysis measures levels of essential minerals, including calcium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, and potassium. It is also used to measure levels of toxic minerals, such as lead, mercury, arsenic, and aluminum.

The table below lists the minerals that can be measured through hair analysis. Next to each element is its symbol. In addition, the table shows the way in which each mineral interacts with other elements. In the case of lead, for instance, note that the presence of lead does not promote the action of any other mineral (second column). On the other hand, lead does inhibit the action of calcium, iron, and potassium (third column) - all important nutrients. Finally, the action of lead itself is inhibited by the presence of selenium and zinc (fourth column).

Amazon: Toxic Element Exposure Home Hair Testing Kit, TestCountry
Test for 31 Heavy Metals, Toxins & Chemicals. Includes Medical Review Officer (MRO) Findings & Pre-Paid Sample Return Label.

When exposure to heavy metals or other toxic elements is suspected, those impacted want to know whether their health is at risk right away. With this easy, safe, and non-invasive kit, individuals who think they could have come in contact with thirty-one of the most common toxins and heavy metals can find out where they stand in just a few days. Some of the most frequent toxins and heavy metals tested for include mercury, arsenic, and lead, which makes this kit particularly helpful for families with children living in a home that was trimmed with lead paint. Exposure can be detected as far back as six months, so critical information remains available, even if time has passed. Some of the indications of heavy metal poisoning can be easily mistaken for other conditions, which makes testing a critical step in ruling out the causes of these symptoms:
    • Chronic pain in soft tissues, such as muscular pain.
    • General feeling of being "under the weather"
    • Confusion, forgetfulness.
    • Chronic infections.
    • Any on-going stomach or intestinal issues, such as constipation or diarrhea, gas, heartburn, and nausea.
    • Sudden onset of food allergies.
    • Migraines, dizziness, other headaches.
    • Problems with vision.
    • Tingling, numbness, electrical shocks in the body, particularly in the extremities.

Results can be ready in as few as 7 to 10 business days, so those affected do not have to struggle with the worry and anxiety of not knowing for an extended period of time. The hair sample required for accurate results is only 0.25 grams, which is simple and painless to collect. The kit is a CLIA Accredited Laboratory test, so you can be secure that you are purchasing a product that works. Results are presented in quantified detail, showing the screenings at microgram and gram levels. This Toxic Element Exposure Testing Kit is set an affordable price to ensure that it is accessible to anyone who might have come in contact with dangerous substances.

Amazon: Hair Mineral Analysis Including MD Recommendations, Doctors Data/BioRica International Corp.
Tests for 17 toxic heavy metals and 22 mineral and trace mineral elements, shows your risk for osteoporosis and hyperacidity, helps you decide whether elimination of heavy metals is necessary and includes a treatment plan established by a medical doctor. Hair Mineral Analysis is an important tool for maintaining optimal health as it shows deficiencies in minerals and toxicity induced by heavy metals. A hair analysis test is the best way to obtain a comprehensive and accurate vitamin deficiency test or a mineral deficiency test. Hair is the second most metabolically active tissue in the body. The hair tissue is affected by the blood, perspiration, environment, genetics, hormones and enzymes. The hair represents what is occurring inside the cells and the submolecular figures of the body. A blood test shows what is happening outside the cell and the waste material being discarded. The hair gives a reading of what is being stored in the body. For example, if mercury is high in the hair, a higher concentration of it would also be found in organs like the kidney and liver. A hair analysis gives a complete picture of a person's health history. Our hair analysis test can indicate vitamin, mineral and nutritional deficiencies as well as heavy metal toxicity have occured over a long period of time. All minerals need to be in balance for optimal health. For instance if calcium and magnesium are too low you may have muscle twitches or trouble sleeping. If sodium and potassium are too high you may have hyperactivity. If our hair analysis test indicates that there is an elevated mineral toxicity, this means that your minerals are getting stuck in the connective tissues, instead of being utilized by your body. The key is that ALL of your minerals need to be in "balance" with each other so they can nourish your body properly as they are supposed to do. Without a hair test, there is no scientific way to identify which vitamins and minerals you need for optimal physical and emotional health. It is fast, painless and reasonably priced. After you check out, we will send you a kit. You then send it back to us with a hair sample. After about 2 weeks you will receive the test results with a full multi-page explanation.
