Incorporating elements of Western science and principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, this form of diagnosis was developed in Germany in the 1950s. Practitioners use electronic devices to measure electrical resistance at various points on the patient's body; fluctuations in the normal readings are said to indicate existing or potential health problems. Energy medicine is usually practiced by nutritional therapists or clinical ecologists, but may also be used by electro-acupuncturists and by homeopaths, especially in Germany.

A Vega machine is an electroacupuncture device which proponents claim can diagnose allergies and other illnesses. Mainstream science regards them as a form of quackery. Manufacturers make brief and general claims as to how their device(s) achieve their purported results. These devices are not new, the first one to be commercially marketed appears to have been around 1968, the Vegatest.

    By John Morley

The use of the Vega machine combines Traditional Acupuncture theory and Classical Homeopathic theory. It enables an experienced practitioner to quickly obtain information about many of the stress factors that come from the environment and which are not usually considered in normal medical testing but which can be responsible for many conditions of chronic illness, unexplainable conditions, conditions in which conventional testing finds nothing wrong, vague or unusual symptoms, and failure to respond to treatment. Some testers, who are not usually health professionals, test only for allergies and for mineral and vitamin deficiencies but they do not exploit the full potential of the Vegatest system to track down and unmask the root causes of disease.

Readings are taken from acupuncture points of very low electrical vibrations from within the body, and they are compared with homeopathic potencies or native substances that are put in the circuit. No needles are used, the readings being taken by the tester who touches the test probe to the point on the surface of the patient's skin. The person being tested has another probe which they hold in their hand, thus completing the circuit. If the normal reading is lowered it indicates that the substance in the circuit with the patient at that time is relevant for them. This can have several interpretations, including that (i) the person being tested does not tolerate the substance that is in the circuit, or that (ii) they have an infection or a poisoning with that substance.

The really powerful aspect of Vega testing is in the detective work that is possible following the identification of the relevant stress factors and the stressed organs in the patient's body. This is done by a technique called filtering and it involves placing 2 or more test substances in the circuit with the patient at the same time. This enables a skilled tester to gather much more precise and useful information about the patient's condition. This is not possible by a tester who is only testing for allergies, which in most cases are actually secondary symptoms to the primary stress factors and will only be resolved when the causal roots are removed from the patient's . The filtering technique determine the relationships between the various indications, for example to find the most stressed organs, the key blocking factors to a person's ability to apply their own immune system, the organs that are most affected by a chemical or heavy metal toxin or by electromagnetic stress, the origin of chain reactions that have occurred in the body, disturbed meridians, the precise location in the jaw of a root canal or a filling that is disturbing the whole body's functioning, the priorities and order of any treatment or medicaments that will be needed.

The Vega machine is also used therapeutically to test for the effectiveness of remedies or medicines before they are taken. Remedies that indicate improved Biological Vitality or which filter positively against a stressed organ are considered to be effective. This was the original finding that led to the development of the Vega system.

The Vega machine first appeared in 1978, the first Bioenergetic testing device. The new generation Vegatest Expert device (1997), which is partly computerized, takes the testing possibilities to a greater level of precision, particularly in the analysis of Residual Toxins (from unresolved previous illness, negative vaccination effects, viral fragments, pharmaceutical and chemical toxicities etc.) The Vegatest Expert also provides Energy Screening ~ a general overview before the main testing that enables the tester to identify general trends. This includes an assessment of energy distribution in different areas of the body, of areas where the body does not adapt well under stress and of the likely location of blocks to normal function and normal recovery.

One system, which is beginning to grow in popularity among doctors and dentists, is a device known as the VEGA machine. The prototype of this system was developed by Dr. Reinhard Voll, a German physician. The VEGA comes with a hand-held electrical probe which the physician presses against the individual acupoint of interest. The patient holds a brass tube in one hand, which is connected by a wire to the VEGA Machine. By holding this tube, the patient permits a completed electrical circuit to occur when the metal-tipped probe touches the acupoint. The probe relays micro voltage electrical information from the acupoints to the VEGA Machine, where it is displayed on a type of voltmeter readout.

    vega allergy testing

Dr. Georgiou testing a patient for Food Intolerances

Certain levels of electrical norms for the acupoints have been established by Voll's previous research. The electrical voltage level for a particular acupoint reflects the energy level of its meridian associated organ(s). The direction of electrical deviation from the norm can have important implications about the nature of the underlying problem in a particular meridian. For instance, an acupoint voltage that is lower than normal may be caused by degenerative disease within an organ system or by conditions which produce a low general vitality. Conversely, higher than normal acupoint voltage readings can be indicative of an underlying inflammatory process.

The VEGA Machine allows one to carry out an energetic inventory of the functions of the different organs in a very detailed fashion. The energetic information may be in the form of too little or too much meridian electrical energy. This first step may give a clue as to the presence of degeneration or inflammation in the organ in question.

The Vegetative Reflex Test (VRT) represents an advanced development of the "Electroacupuncture according to Voll" (EAV) concept. It features a combination of electronic measurements of skin resistance on specific energy meridian points that disclose vital health information through vegetative (autonomic) reflexes and resonances.

When all conventional diagnostic tests (physical and biochemical) reveal no clues to the cause of a patient's complaints, the disorders are most likely functional in nature rather than morphological. The VRT reveals about 80 percent of the otherwise undiagnosable cases of migraines, backaches, exhaustion, sleep disturbance, etc.

When conventional examination cannot fully or correctly explain the patient's complaints, the VRT is highly indicative. It is superbly suited for the diagnosis of functional ailments and of clinically obscure, sub-clinical disorders. These make up about 20 percent of all indications.

In severe clinical cases with perplexing differential diagnosis, the VRT can be of decisive help. It can lead to wide-ranging diagnostic discoveries of utmost significance.

The VRT is not, and cannot be, a substitute for conventional diagnostic procedures whenever they are indicated. Experienced physicians face the dilemma off and on.

Up-to-date experience shows that the VRT achieves the greatest rate of diagnostic success in cases of functional disturbances. This is presumably due to the physical basis of the VRT, a diagnostic system that utilizes the phenomenon of biological resonance.

70 percent of patients in an average daily practice suffer from functional disorders manifested as chronic diseases. Conventionally, they are treated with chemotherapeutics. Functional disturbances cannot be confirmed by conventional diagnostics.

30 to 40 percent of conventional laboratory tests for patients with functional ailments yield negative results (nothing of significance is revealed). This often seems to be a justification for psychotherapeutic intervention. This, in most cases, is not productive.

Such diagnostic shortcomings of conventional medicine, results in needless suffering, with waste of time and money.

The VRT, which is subjective, is only as good as the clinician in charge. In the hands of a knowledgeable and experienced physician it can be of tremendous help to the patient.

The indications for VRT diagnostics apply to chronically ill patients with functional and subclinical disturbances. Attempting to corroborate VRT findings with conventional diagnostics would make as little sense as trying to detect sound waves with optical instruments. Functional disturbances initially are neither chemical nor morphological.

In Functional Medicine the VRT represents an important diagnostic method within the entire spectrum of diagnostic modalities.

The VEGA Machine is capable of going beyond the diagnosis of energetic imbalance levels in particular systems. It is frequently capable of finding the actual causes of the energetic dysfunction, as well as potential cures for the disorders. The manner in which the VEGA Machine is able to carry out this type of analysis is a function of biological resonance.

Resonance is a phenomenon which occurs throughout nature. At the level of the atom, we know that electrons whirl about the nucleus in certain energetically defined orbits. In order to move an electron from a lower to a higher orbit, a quantum of energy with very special frequency characteristics is required. An electron will only accept energy of the appropriate frequency to move from one energy level to another. If the electron falls from the higher to the lower orbit, it will radiate energy of that very same frequency. This required atomic frequency is referred to as the "resonant frequency."

The phenomenon of resonance is the principle behind the imaging systems of MRI and EMR scanning. Atoms and molecules have special resonant frequencies that will only be excited by energies of very precise vibratory characteristics. For instance, the singer who is able to shatter a wine glass by delivering a high amplitude note does so by singing in the precise resonant frequency of the glass.

Another definition of resonance has to do with the phenomenon of energy exchanged between tuned oscillators. Let us use as an example two perfectly tuned Stradivarius violins placed at opposite ends of a small room. If we pluck the E string of one violin, a careful observer will notice that the sister violin's E string will also begin to vibrate and "sing" in harmony. The reason that this occurs is because the E strings of the violins are carefully tuned and responsive to a particular frequency. The E strings can accept energy in the E frequency because that is their resonant frequency. The E strings of the violins are like the electrons of the atoms. They will vibrate at a new energy level only if they are exposed to energy of their reflection of the level of functioning of the immune system.

From an energetic standpoint, the human body, when weakened or shifted from equilibrium, oscillates at a different and less harmonious frequency than when healthy. This abnormal frequency reflects a general state of cellular energetic imbalance within the physical body. When a weakened individual is unable to shift his/her energetic mode to the needed frequency (which allows their immune system to properly defend the body), a certain amount of subtle energetic help may be needed. If this same individual is supplied with a dose of the needed energetic frequency, it allows the cellular bioenergetic systems to resonate in the proper vibrational mode, thereby throwing off the toxicities of the illness.

This frequency-specific subtle-energy boost allows the physical body and associated bioenergy systems to return to a new level of homeostasis. Providing this needed subtle-energy boost through choosing the right homeopathic remedy is one of the key concepts of homeopathic practice. Another way of providing this subtle-energy boost is by using bioresonance therapy, using machines such as the VEGA SELECT and the BICOM. Using BACH Flower remedies, as well as Rife technologies are other ways of returning the body to a level of homeostasis.

Attached to the VEGA Machine is a small, metallic platform (sometimes called a honeycomb) in which cylindrical holes have been drilled. Each hole can hold a small ampule of medication or food to be tested. This metallic table is attached to the VEGA system. EAV researchers have discovered that any substance placed upon the metallic table becomes part of the energetic circuit of the VEGA Machine. When the EAV practitioner first touches the probe to the acupoints for energetic reading analysis, he or she does so with nothing on the metallic accessory table in order to examine baseline meridian conditions. Once the initial electrical readings have been taken, the absolute level of microvoltage on the meter tells the practitioner if the acupoint and associated meridian are electrically normal or in a state of energetic imbalance.

If the acupoint is found to be out of balance, the practitioner may then place various homeopathic remedies upon the electrical accessory table in order to observe the changes in the acupoint electrical readout. Any substance that is placed upon the metallic table becomes part of the energetic circuit. It is believed that certain aspects of the remedy's subtle energetic patterns are conducted over electrical wires, in a fashion similar to electricity. For most remedies placed in the energetic circuit, additional acupoint electrical readings will reveal no significant changes from the initial measurement. However, when a remedy is placed on the metallic table which matches the frequency of the energetic imbalance of the patient, a resonance effect occurs, and a significant change in the acupoint reading is observed.

Utilizing the VEGA Machine, the patient is linked through his/her acupoint meridian interface with the needed subtle energetic frequency. A resonance effect occurs between the patient and the circuitry. In the case of the VEGA Machine, individual frequencies are tested one at a time by placing a small portion of substance of a particular subtle energetic frequency into the circuit - the patient is exposed to a particular energetic frequency. The only energetic frequency which has diagnostic significance is one which resonates with a relevant biological frequency of the organism being tested. The VEGA will measure variation in electrical outputs on a voltmeter readout from an acupuncture point.

It was mentioned earlier that the VEGA Machine was capable of demonstrating the causes of illnesses. The way in which this is accomplished is through testing different types of homeopathic bionosodes on the VEGA Machine platform. Homeopathic remedies can be prepared from any substance, be it plant, animal, or mineral. In the case of the bionosode, a small portion of tissue from a diseased organ is ground up and used to prepare a homeopathic remedy. Because there are no physical molecules left in the final homeopathic remedy, only the energetic essence of the tissue and local pathogens remain. The absence of physical pathogens such as bacteria and viruses in the homeopathic preparation means that the bionosode is incapable of directly transmitting illness to a patient receiving this remedy. If the illness was caused by a particular bacterium or virus, then only its energetic signature remains in the bionosode.

When a particular bionosode induces a resonance reaction in the acupoint as measured by the VEGA Machine, it may be inferred that the cause of the patient's illness has been uncovered. Various types of diseases originating from bacterial infections can be diagnosed utilizing the VEGA method. Bionosodes can be prepared from cultures of individual types of bacteria. For example, a bionosode exists for the Salmonella bacterium. The way in which a homeopathic VEGA practitioner might diagnose Salmonella food poisoning without obtaining blood tests or cultures is as follows:

Various bionosodes of suspected pathogens would be sequentially tested by placing them upon the metallic accessory table. If indeed the pathogen is Salmonella, placing a bionosode prepared from the Salmonella bacterium on the metal accessory table would produce a significant resonance reaction in the meridian electrical readout, with a resulting drop on the voltmeter of the VEGA Machine.

If a significant reaction occurs, it is confirmed by examining the acupoint's reaction to particular homeopathic strengths of the bionosode in order to find the perfect amplitude of frequency match between patient and remedy. Having found the exact remedy strength, the bionosode could be given to the patient either as a pill, sublingual liquid, or intramuscular injection. The correct frequency match would be confirmed by the rapid resolution of the patient's symptoms upon taking the homeopathic remedy.

The Vegetative Reflex Test (VRT), or the VEGA bio-dermal testing is sensitive in this respect, and offers several decisive advantages:
    • Discovery of pathophysiologic processes that escape the standard clinical examination.
    • Determination of the existence of focal infections.
    • Determination of sub-clinical infections.
    • Pathological conditions in different quadrants of the body.
    • Energetic-functional condition of different organs.
    • Condition of the immune system and of the immune- related tissues (spleen, thymus, etc.).
    • Quantity of available energy, weak, strong average.
    • Overall health condition.
    • Constitutional factors.
    • Emotional stress and disturbances.
    • Insight into the basic pathogenetic patterns as well as causal relationships in form of causal chains and nets.
    • Monitoring of therapeutic progress with quick review of indications for medication.
    • Uncovering of potentially refractory side effects (for instance allergic reactions).

The VEGA VRT is an enrichment and enlargement of clinical diagnosis. It has the potential to uncover previously unsuspected dysregulations in advance of the clinical manifestation of disease so that preventive measures could be put in effect timely.

At the DaVinci Natural Health Centre, most clients undergo VEGA bio-dermal testing - a simple, non-intrusive diagnostic method which involves placing an electrode on acu-points of the body (usually fingers and toes). All the organs of the body can be checked for function, as well as allergies to foods, dust, pollens, drugs, etc. and anything else that is suspected. It is also possible to test whether drugs or natural substances will have side effects BEFORE actually taking the active substance. It is truly a wonderful and cost-effective way of quickly determining the function of most body organs and tissues, as well as understanding the genesis of the dysfunctions.

Our National Health Service is failing to cope with the ever-increasing numbers of patients suffering from cancer We are constantly reminded that our National Health Service is failing to cope with the ever-increasing numbers of patients suffering from cancer and other chronic illnesses. Criticism of the NHS, however justified, is counterproductive unless it can lead to a radical new approach to the treatment of disease. Many people would suggest that the German model of health care could be a good example for this country to follow.

Germany has adopted a fundamentally different approach to health care. GPs are required to offer patients alternative medical treatments if conventional medicine does not work within a specified period of time. This has had two consequences. Firstly many German GPs themselves now offer alternative medicine. Secondly hospital consultants are prepared to accept alternative medical findings from both medically qualified and non-medical practitioners.

The discovery of homoeopathy is attributed to a German doctor. In England the few NHS homoeopathic hospitals still practise the original form of treatment known as classical homeopathy. Germany and other countries, have now developed newer and more powerful remedies known as complex and resonance homeopathies. Also a variety of instruments have been developed to aid alternative practitioners. Many of them magnify the subtle electrical currents that flow between the various parts of both individual cells and organs. It is now possible to use these instruments to assess the function of the various organs of the body and how both illness and treatment can affect them.

American industry has realized the enormous potential of this approach to medicine American industry has realised the enormous potential of this approach to medicine and is rapidly catching up with the German technologies. This has led to increasing numbers of alternative practitioners, but as yet there has been little interest shown in combining both forms of medicine under the umbrella of qualified doctors. Meanwhile in the UK the official attitude still discourages alternative medicine, its instruments and the newer forms of homeopathy.

Vega of Germany is an engineering company with a reputation for producing high quality measuring instruments. For many years it has also been involved in the research and production of measuring instruments for use in alternative medicine. It now produces a variety of models. There is a small portable version that relies upon the use of various test ampoules. The newer larger computerized version allows the practitioner to perform many more tests in a comparatively short time. By using the Vega, or similar, machine this enables an alternative practitioner to reach a conclusion within 30 minutes. The computerized machine is called the Vega Expert and the rest of this article refers to its use. However, it should be noted that Vega also produces a variety of more complex measuring and treatment machines.

In this country the name Vega has been associated with a number of bad news stories, largely the result of unqualified people claiming to diagnose allergies and mineral / vitamin deficiencies. There is an interesting parallel between the Vega machines and the humble stethoscope. Anyone can buy a stethoscope, pretend to be a doctor, and then pretend to make a medical diagnosis. Heart specialists have to undergo many years of training before they can claim to make an accurate diagnosis using a stethoscope.

Vega machines work by involving the patient in an electrical circuit The Vega machines work by involving the patient in an electrical circuit. A baton is held in one of the patient's hands and the circuit completed by applying a stylus (like a ballpoint pen) to the opposite hand or foot. The process is non-invasive and painless. Is it easy to operate? Any doctor, dentist or nurse could learn to use it in a very short time. With practice comes expertise and a knowledge of the various alternative remedies. If it were a difficult technique there wouldn't be 14,000 to 20,000 of these machines in German doctors' and dentists' surgeries.

The Vega machine can be used for both diagnosis and treatment. Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology is needed to help with making a diagnosis. Then the effectiveness and safety of any proposed treatments can be assessed. Therefore the range of knowledge possessed by the operator is the only limit to the range of treatments on offer. I have found that the machine yields answers that makes pathology become alive and therefore dispenses with the need to make vague or misleading diagnoses. After 30 minutes, or less, the operator is in possession of sufficient knowledge to make one of three choices. Firstly there may be the need to refer the patient on to another qualified practitioner for further advice and investigation. Secondly the patient could be offered conventional treatment, or thirdly alternative therapy.

So how does this machine operate? Like any machine it has to be calibrated and requires an initial test to determine if the patient is either healthy or not functioning properly. Because the machines are based upon the Chinese principle of energy and meridians, it is possible to tell if the patient's Yang and Yin are equally balanced. If there is too much Yang then the patient is hyperactive, If there is too little Yang then the patient is under-active and fatigued.

Viral, bacterial and fungal infections are shown in the screening test There are two screening tests providing clues that can lead to more detailed tests and an eventual diagnosis. It is possible to discover if the patient is suffering from stress, is depressed or suffering from another mental illness. Viral, bacterial and fungal infections are shown in the screening test. It is important to distinguish between various infections because resonance homeopathic remedies are capable of destroying viruses.

Although vaccine damage is denied in this country, it is accepted, diagnosed and treated on the continent. Deficiencies of hormones, enzymes, minerals and vitamins can be highlighted. Tumors, if present, can be classified as benign, pre-malignant and cancerous. It is possible to signal the presence of toxic metals and other pollutants. If the patient has allergies then they would be expected to reveal their existence during a screening test. Of arguably greater interest to a conventional doctor, it is possible to identify an overdose, raised cholesterol, high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, raised urea, raised uric acid and low blood levels of oxygen.

Following the screening tests, it is then possible to make a more detailed investigation. The Vega machine enables the operator to assess the function of every single organ in the body. If there are tests missing in the machine for any small anatomical parts of the body this can be overcome by the use of separate specific test ampoules that can be placed on the machine.

There are four more sections devoted to various allergies. However I find that most of these problems will disappear once the underlying disease has been identified and treated. There follows tests for toxic metals, which may be of more interest to dentists. The next section enables the operator to confirm the presence of fungi, viruses, bacteria and parasites. The machine is even capable of identifying individual organisms, and once again if any doubt persists there are more comprehensive test ampoules available. Parasitic infections are common causes of many diseases including cancer. Parasites are difficult to identify in pathology laboratories and therefore these infections usually pass unnoticed. Conventional, homeopathic, and herbal remedies can successfully treat parasites, once identified.

The machine is even capable of identifying individual organisms The next section of tests identifies individual deficiencies of hormones, enzymes, vitamins and minerals. The latter is perhaps the most important test of all because conventional medicine looks for very few minerals. (In all chronic disease there is always some mineral deficiency. In cancer there is invariably a selenium deficiency. Selenium is seldom, if ever, estimated so cancer patients are deprived of this most essential treatment).

The Vega Expert is also an invaluable tool for dentists. It can identify any dental or associated medical disease and even the individual diseased tooth. If there are electrical currents flowing between different types of metal fillings the machine can identify and correct this problem.

The remainder of the tests are principally of interest to alternative practitioners, because they are designed to identify the most appropriate treatments, their dosage, strength and frequency of use.

Cancer, like all other chronic disease, has an underlying pathological cause and consequent mineral, and possibly vitamin, deficiency. In the hands of a competent operator the Vega Expert can, in less than thirty minutes, identify the presence of a cancer, its cause and the inevitable mineral deficiencies. The patient can then, with confidence, be referred for specialist advice and treatment. Imagine the changes that could take place within the NHS if GPs and hospital practitioners would embrace these technologies. Waiting lists would shrink, workloads diminish and patients would get greater satisfaction. We could progress from having a third world service to a modern health care system like Germany. And the individual doctor could become the controller and conductor of both conventional and alternative medicine.

Abnormal reactions to food were recorded in ancient Greece by Hippocrates, the "father of medicine", but only in 1906 was the term "allergy" coined, by the Viennese Pediatrician Baron Clemens von Pirquet. He realized that some of his patients reacted to certain foods, pollen, or insect stings, and used the term to describe any unusual response to the environment.

    Energy channels in TCM.

Energy channels on a traditional Chinese diagnostic chart.

Allergies came to be defined as reactions within the immune system, identified by a positive skin-prick test. (See under Consulting A Practitioner.)

From the 1920s, several American health care providers studied "delayed" or "hidden" food allergies. Reactions took longer to appear than other allergies, were less acute, and provoked no skin-test response. Most health care providers rejected these ideas about food "intolerances" or sensitivities, and there was little research within mainstream medicine.

In the late 1940s, American allergist Dr. Thereon G. Randolph claimed that sensitivity to common foods could cause symptoms such as headaches and arthritis, and that environmental chemicals could have profound negative effects. The best seller "Silent Spring", a 1962 book by American biologist Rachel Carson, alerted the world to the dangers of insecticides.

At this time, the term "clinical ecology" began to be used to describe this field of medicine. The system gained ground in the U.K. during the 1970s and is practiced today throughout the Western world by qualified health care providers and complementary therapists.

Clinical ecologists believe the foods are the most likely environmental carriers of "toxins", and claim that anyone drinking unfiltered water and eating a typical Western diet is likely to ingest 100 synthetic chemicals daily. These include pesticides and herbicides sprayed on vegetables and fruits, residues of drugs fed to animals prior to slaughter, and preservatives in processed foods.

MoonDragon's Nutrition Information: Food Additives Index & Links

The body usually maintains health despite an onslaught of environmental toxins. For some people, particularly those susceptible to allergies, or those who have an infection or a diet deficient in antioxidant vitamins and minerals, it can become more difficult to cope. According to clinical ecologists, these people are more prone to developing inflammatory reactions, or even changes in brain chemistry, which can alter their mood and vitality. Practitioners use various tests to identify the substances causing trouble so that they can be avoided or limited. They may also try to "desensitize" the patient to the irritant.

    A sample of air.

A sample of air contains different plant pollens, any of which may prompt an allergic reaction when inhaled.

    Air pollution.

Soaring levels of chemicals found in exhaust fumes are thought to overload some people's capacity to deal with allergens and pollutants.

    Pesticides & herbicides.

Pesticides and herbicides sprayed on crops are known to have a damaging effect on health.

The scientific basis for clinical ecology has not been well established, and the associated diagnostic tests are considered unreliable. However, the detrimental effects of environmental pollution on health are becoming more apparent, and further research is needed. True allergies, like asthma, are already strongly linked to environmental factors, such as air pollution.

    MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Allergies
    MoonDragon's Health & Wellness: Asthma

The premise that environmental irritants can affect health makes sense, but many conventional health care providers would question the effectiveness of pinpointing them. The idea that diagnostic tests can distinguish between stress-related and environmental factors belies the complexity of patients' problems, and it is too easy to jump to an environment-linked conclusion.

    consulting a practitioner.

The practitioner may check for pale skin, shadows under the eyes, and swollen glands. Swollen glands which may indicate sensitivity to certain substances.

The practitioner asks about your medical history, diet, and lifestyle, to see if there is any evidence of exposure to irritants. He then checks for signs of sensitivity, such as swollen glands. A hair or blood test may be taken to determine mineral and nutritional factors thought to relate to the strength of the immune system. Other tests include:

  • Check symptoms with a health care provider if consulting a clinical ecologist who is not medically qualified.

  • Carry out elimination diets only under qualified supervision to ensure adequate nutrition. The elimination diet should not be tried by someone with severe allergic responses, which can be life-threatening.

The simplest treatment is to avoid any irritants identified, but this is not always practical. Your practitioner may opt to "desensitize" you using the following techniques so that the body can withstand limited exposure to the irritant.

    keeping a journal

The practitioner may recommend keeping a written record of when reactions take place, and in what circumstances, to help build up a complete picture of the problem.

EXCLUSION or ELIMINATION DIETS: Suspect foods, commonly dairy products, wheat, sugar, citrus fruits, nuts, eggs, or coffee, are excluded for 10-14 days in the hope that symptoms will disappear. Alternately, food intake is reduced to one or two items for 5 days, individual foods are then reintroduced until symptoms are triggered. The culprit food is eliminated and added a week later to see if symptoms return.

ENZYME-POTENTIATED DESENSITIZATION: The diluted irritant is mixed with an enzyme and kept next to the skin for several days.

PROVOCATION NEUTRALIZATION: Decreasing concentrations of the irritant are injected or given as drops under the tongue. The neutralizing dose is identified at the point at which no reaction occurs. This is then used as a vaccine once or twice a day.

    provocation neutralization
    provocation neutralization

In provocation neutralization, drops of up to nine different dilutions of an irritant are placed in turn under the tongue, using a pipette.

Your practitioner may suggest ways of changing your lifestyle to avoid exposure to irritants such as house dust, pollen, exhaust fumes, disinfectants, and chemicals in food and tap water. To avoid dust mites, air your bedding regularly and invest in a good vacuum cleaner. Keep the windows open for ventilation or use an air filter. Mild forms of chemical sensitivity may respond to antioxidant supplements, especially vitamins C and E, zinc, and selenium.

    drinking filtered tap water

Drinking filtered tap water is a simple and effective way of reducing the amount of impurities absorbed by the body every day.
