BIOCHEMIC TISSUE SALTS
Biochemic Tissue Salts, also known as "Schussler Salts, Cell Salts, or Biochemic Salts" are homeopathic preparations from mineral sources, such as rock salt and quartz. They were developed in the 1870s by Dr. Wilhelm Schussler, a German homeopathic doctor, to supplement deficiencies of vital minerals which, he believed, would otherwise leave the body weak and susceptible to disease. Biochemic tissue salts are commonly prescribed by homeopaths worldwide. They are often used as a self-help treatment for minor ailments with recognizable symptoms, and to supplement the dietary intake of minerals. Their main uses are for:
- Colds, phlegm, coughs, sore throats.
- Hay fever.
- Headaches.
- Anxiety.
- Indigestion, heartburn.
- Cramps, neuralgia, muscle pain.
- Minor skin conditions.
HISTORY
In 1873, Dr. Wilhelm Schussler, a German homeopathic doctor, published a paper in which he claimed that many ailments were due to a lack of essential inorganic minerals in the body. To redress these deficiencies he recommended nutritional supplements consisting of 12 minerals or "biochemic" tissue salts, to be taken either singly or in combination. Tissue salts are now available worldwide; related naturopathic minerals are popular in Australia.
CONSULTING A PRACTITIONER
Homeopaths, naturopaths, and herbalists will often recommend tissue salts as part of a nutritional program, but they are also frequently used as a self-help measure. Many health food stores and some pharmacies, especially homeopathic ones, stock tissue salts, and manufacturers usually provide dosage information.
The salts are homeopathic preparations that are highly diluted (or potentized). One part of the mineral salt is mixed with nine parts lactose (milk sugar) and this process is repeated six times (6X). The salts are taken in the form of small tablets, dissolved under the tongue.
Ferrum phos is the name given to the tissue salt made from iron phosphate powder. Vivianite is a natural source of iron phosphate. See right image.
CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL OPINION & RESEARCH
Some of Dr. Schussler's theories have been verified by medical research. For example, it is now accepted that calcium deficiency can cause susceptibility to bone disorders and problems in absorbing nutrients. There is no evidence, however, that tissue salts redress this deficiency. Lack of research makes it impossible to reach scientific conclusion. In such tiny amounts the active ingredients are harmless.
BIOCHEMIC TISSUE SALTS
Biochemics was developed in the 1870s by a German homeopathic physician, Dr. Wilhelm Schussler. He named 12 tissue salts as being vital for health, and described exactly what each one of them did in the body. He also listed the ailments he claimed could be cured by using tissue salts as medicines in tablet form.
The 12 tissue salts are also listed in the homeopathic range of medicines and are prepared in the same way - but the two therapies are quite different. While biochemics makes good the mineral deficiency believed to be causing the disease, the homeopathic philosophy of "like cures like" prescribes remedies to induce the symptoms of the disease in a healthy person, and is also concerned with the patient's emotional and mental levels.
Biochemics claims to help alleviate many everyday aches and pains and the tissue salts can be used to treat simple, easily recognized symptoms that are usually self-healing over time. Tissue salts are available from health stores and some chemists and are prepared in highly diluted doses - usually 6X or a higher dilution dosage (6C). Homeopathic potencies are designated by the combination of a number and a letter (for example, 6X or 30C). The number refers to the number of dilutions the tincture has undergone within a series to prepare that remedy. The letter refers to the proportions used in each dilution of the series (the Roman numeral X means 10, and the Roman numeral C means 100), as well as the number of successions the vial of solution undergoes in each successive stage. For a 6X dosage, this means that one part of the active ingredient is mixed with nine parts lactose and the process repeated a further six times. For more information see Homeopathic Potencies.
Each salt is known by a number and abbreviated name (combination remedies are also available, known by a letter). The salts are small tablets that simply dissolve in the mouth, making them suitable for children or people who have trouble swallowing tablets. For acute symptoms, take the remedy every half and hour. For chronic symptoms, take them every two hours. The tablets are absorbed quickly into the bloodstream and give rapid relief from sudden, short-term conditions such as colds and flu. Long-standing ailments take longer - up to several months.
Tissue salts will not mask any symptoms that they cannot treat; instead they will persist - an indication that further advice and treatment is necessary.

Indications:
- All hard swellings, bony growths (anywhere, whether on cheek, jaws, or elsewhere) and indurated glands, indurated tonsils etc.
- Bruises on scalp with hard, uneven bumps. (In the head,) "A sort of creaking, straining, and drawing, greatly interfering with sleep..."
- Headache with nausea in the afternoon, better in the evening.
- Cataract; blurred vision after eyestrain.
- Thick, greenish-yellow, offensive, lumpy nasal discharge.
- Cavities of teeth, with boring pain; mouth dry, tongue looks cracked. Enamel of teeth rough; looseness of teeth, with or without pain.

5. Kali. Mur. (Kali Muriatica / Potassium Chloride): Used for respiratory ailments such as asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, colds, tonsillitis, sore throat, sluggish digestion.

- Engorgement of mucous membranes in nose and throat, causing snoring or mouth-breathing. (especially after operation to remove adenoids.)
- Pains of a fleeting, shifting nature Rheumatic/neuralgic pains; cramps in limbs.
- In most fevers, gastric, typhoid, measles, etc. Fever when temperature increases in the evening, and rises till midnight, then falls.
- Yellow, slimy, coated tongue. Dreads hot drinks. No thirst.
- In fevers, when even Ferrum Phos fails, Kali Sulph may be given to promote perspiration.

- Spasmodic stammering. Hiccups.
- In tetanus; can also be rubbed into gums; frequent administration.
- Cramps - can be used along with Kali Phos and Calc Phos. Cramps in stomach, colicky pain in intestines, cramps in arms and legs.
- Membranous dysmenorrhea; pain during menstruation, with membranes in discharge. Heat relieves. Can be started before periods are due, to ease the symptoms.
- Convulsive coughing fits; whooping cough, along with Kali Mur.
- Always worse from cold. Symptoms better from heat, pressure and rubbing the part briskly.

Indications:

- Dislike of bread. Craving for salt. Very thirsty.
- Great hunger. Emaciated in spite of eating well.
- Slimy, frothy appearance of tongue - clear, but with bubbles of watery saliva.
- Watery discharges - tears from eyes, catarrh from nose, watery leucorrhea, watery diarrhea, watery matter from skin vesicles.
- Hammering headaches, especially in school-going children. Headaches with flow of tears, or with vomiting of frothy, watery substance.
- Colds with much sneezing, watery flow from nose, often accompanied by tears.
- Constipation with dryness of stool and smarting of anus.
- Menstrual flow thin and watery. Great depression during periods. Anemia, especially in school-girls.
- Involuntary movements of legs - "cannot sit still." Backache better from lying on something hard. Rheumatism when other symptoms correspond. Neuralgic pains when other symptoms match.
- Dropsy anywhere in the body.
- Cannot pass urine in anyone's presence.
- Chilliness. Constant desire to sleep.
- Fevers with muttering, twitching and watery secretions, whether diarrhea or vomiting. (Not to be given during paroxysm in intermittent fevers.)

10. Nat. Phos (Natrum Phosphorica / Sodium Phosphate): Acid-alkaline regulator of the cells. Used for acidity, heartburn, rhuematic pains, indigestion.
An acid neutralizer. While body fluids are both acid and alkaline, deficiency only occurs in the alkaline factor, since acid is an organic component, always present, when diet is adequate. Therefore what is called "hyperacidity" is really a deficiency of the inorganic salt that combines with it - Nat. Phos.
Indications:
- Creamy yellow coating at back of tongue and the roof of the mouth. In fact this creamy-yellow or golden-yellow color is a prime indicator for this remedy - all discharges, whether from eyes, ears, during colds, coating on tonsils, phlegm expectorated, skin discharges, leucorrhea, are of this color.
- Worms and all problems caused or aggravated by worms. Picking of nose, grinding of teeth during sleep, itching of anus, all indicative of worms.
- Acidity - sour eructation, burning; pains after eating.
- Morning sickness when sour fluids brought up. Vomiting of acid fluid.
- "One ear red, hot and frequently itchy, accompanied by gastric derangement and acidity."
- Sour smelling perspiration.
- Rheumatic pains; legs feel weak; creaking of joints; gout.
- "Rose rash" on skin, with golden or creamy yellow secretions. Eczema with similar discharges. Hives.

Indications:
- Greenish Gray, dirty coating on the tongue. The characteristic coating on the tongue points to the choice of the remedy in headaches, indigestion, diarrhea, skin conditions, whatever the problem.
- Complaints arising from living in damp conditions and from eating fish, water-laden plants, etc.
- Mental troubles arising from injury to the head.
- Biliousness. Bitter taste in mouth. Slimy mucus in mouth, rising from stomach. Vomiting of greenish water, or bile. Jaundice. Hypertrophy of liver; - sharp pains in liver region, worse lying on the left side. "Irritable liver."
- Urine "looks like brick-dust and clings to sides of the vessel." Diabetes - the main biochemic remedy. Excessive urination in diabetes.
- Gout, acute or chronic. Rheumatism with bilious symptoms.
- "Hands and feet twitch during sleep."

RESTLESS LEGS
Remedy: Zincum - Weakness, trembling and twitching of legs whilst you sleep. You may feel generally more tired than usual.
EMOTIONAL STRESS
Remedy: Kali Phos. - Nervous exhaustion from overwork, mental strain, worry or over-excitement makes it difficult to fall asleep.

EMOTIONAL EXCITEMENT LEADING TO BODY AILMENTS
Remedy: Aconite - Restlessness and anxious with vivid dreams. Great fear about your labor.

PHYSICAL TENSION

HEARTBURN
Remedy: Merc-sol. - Heartburn with burning pains, hiccups and burping which are worse at night.
CRAMP
Remedy: Calc Carb. - General sluggishness. Cramps in the legs or foot at night while sleeping or waking in the morning.
Remedy: Mag Phos. - Cramps anywhere in the body that are better for heat and firm pressure. General restlessness and insomnia.
BLOCKED NOSE (DUE TO COLD)
Remedy: Pulsatilla - Nose and sinuses are blocked up at night especially in a stuffy room. Feels better in the morning (when it becomes runny) and much better in the fresh and open air.
Remedy: Kali Bich. - Blocked-up nose and sinuses. Dropping from the posterior nares. Mucus is sticky in the morning. Difficulty in breathing due to dryness.
ITCHY SKIN
Remedy: Sulphur - Itching (without a rash), burning which is bad after a hot bath or at night in bed worse scratching leading to insomnia.
PRINCIPLES OF BIOCHEMIC REMEDIES
Blood is composed of organic and inorganic substances which are essential to the process of tissue building. The organic matter comprises sugar, fatty and albuminous substances. The inorganic constituents are what are called tissue or cell salts, and water though present in minute quantities, these tissue salts use the organic salts and water for building the various body cells. Diseases caused by an imbalance in the assimilation or use of the essential (inorganic) materials that are required for the repair and maintenance of the myriad cells that are constantly being manufactured and breaking down.
A deficiency of any of the vital tissue salts causes a dysfunction in the body which gives rise to disease. In the simplest terms, biochemistry supplies such deficiency, in minute quantities, to allow the cells to absorb the salt and get the metabolism to normalcy.
Biochemic prescribing may be done in two ways. Firstly, on the basis of symptom similarity and secondly, by consulting a repertory that lists various remedies for various diseases, and differentiating points between the remedies.
DOSAGE
Biochemic remedies can be given in a fixed dosage. Usual dosage is 2 tablets under tongue three to four times daily.
The tablets are available in various potencies, but 6x may be preferred, though 3x and 12x potencies may be used too. Potencies indicate the number of times the salt has been triturated or dynamized; The higher the potency, the lesser is the actual dosage required, and the finer is its curative ability.
FREQUENCY
The frequency of dosage depends on the acuteness of the illness. In a very acute condition, the doses may be taken as often as every half hourly or even every 15 minutes. As the condition improves, the intervals between doses should be increased to, say, 2 hourly, then 4 hourly, then to only three times a day. There is no strict rule about intervals between doses excepting to gradually decrease the doses as improvement sets in, and stop them after recovery.
TERMINOLOGY
An Intercurrent remedy is one given from time to time to enhance the action of the primary remedy, or to correct an underlying constitutional problem. An Intercurrent remedy may be given thrice daily for two days. Alternate remedies are to be given one at a time, with an interval of at least half an hour between the two. Combinations are remedies that are either mix together in a single vial, or taken together (from different vials), i.e. at the same time.
In the following sections appear keynotes or characteristic symptoms of the twelve remedies, (not to be confused with detailed Materia Medica) and suggested remedies for minor ailments that may also be considered a first-aid guide until medical help is available. It may seem confusing that often the indications of a remedy list contrary symptoms, e.g. diarrhea, as well as constipation, or, as under Natrum Mur., dryness as well as watery exudations. This is because remedies cover a spectrum of symptoms that may range from one extreme to another. For prescribing, either is valid. Check for characteristics and at least 4-5 of the other indications when choosing a remedy.
TISSUE SALTS & ANIMALS
This was a very simple system of medicine and has had adherents ever since, who have been able to make important contributions to health. Despite its apparent over-simplicity, it does work. It has been used in animals too, to great effect. Homeopathic veterinarians believe that some form of modernization is needed, however.
At the turn of the 21st century, health is affected by so many factors, of which Schussler could not possibly have dreamed. There is air pollution on a grand scale, radio and microwave pollution, water pollution and modern agriculture, with its agro-chemicals and, perhaps more importantly artificial nitrogenous fertilizers. The latter have plundered the natural fertility of the agricultural land, such that trace minerals have been drastically depleted. If a modern farm is converted to organic, it is estimated, from work in Switzerland, that it will take 100 years to restore balance in the micro-organisms of the soil, let alone the trace minerals.
Work has begun, to test the theory that has been used in this practice over the years, to establish whether mineral imbalances and relative deficiencies (and their resultant disease patterns) can be helped by the administration of the "new tissue salts."
PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF HOMEOPATHICS IN ANIMAL CARE
Derived from homeopathy (i.e. exploiting the potency dilution/principle) the twelve original "salts" are used to correct imbalances in cell metabolism, by facilitating uptake and utilization of the particular minerals. (Calc fluor, Calc phos, Calc sulph, Ferr phos, Kali mur, Kali phos, Kali sulph, Mag phos, Nat mur, Nat phos, Nat sulph, Silicea.)
They are, of course, only able to help imbalances and relative deficiencies, not absolute deficiencies. The modern use of artificial nitrogen fertilizer depletes the soil of trace minerals, especially the cations. In developed countries, such trace minerals as Manganese, Copper and Zinc have long been deficient in herbage fed to animals, when it has been fertilized in this way. This effect of artificial nitrogenous fertilizers is easily demonstrable, by testing ditches for mineral content, after rain has fallen on fertilized land. This will apply to our pet animals and to ourselves, when we eat cereals, vegetables and fruit so treated. Meat eaters and carnivores, who are at the top of a food chain, could have more to fear.
Important examples of "stressed" minerals (and therefore candidates to be added to the original range) are:
- Arsenic
- Cadmium
- Chromium
- Cobalt
- Copper
- Iodine
- Manganese
- Molybdenum
- Nickel
- Phosphorus (Within traditional range but not sufficiently represented)
- Selenium
- Silver
- Sulphur (Within traditional range but not sufficiently represented)
- Vanadium
- Zinc
It is worth showing a few examples of how these "New Tissue Salts" may be used in animal treatments, by showing some of their clinical indications:
- Copper: Anemia, exhaustion, acetonemia, uric acid accumulation, aids neurotransmission at synapses, antioxidant effect.
- Manganese: Infertility, tendon contracture, Vitamins B, C & E utilization, perosis, health of cartilage, fetal absorption.
- Iodine: Infertility, immune function, metabolic control, stillbirths without deformity, thyroid regulation, retinal pigmentation, resistance to TB.
This work is still in the development phase. It was published, in rudimentary outline, in a poster session at the LIGA congress in Budapest, in 2000.
