INTRODUCTION

In 1637, the French philosopher Descartes put forward the view that the body was a kind of machine, separate from the mind - a concept that hugely influenced the future development of Western medicine. Yet, over 300 years later, research has provided conclusive evidence that mind and body are intricately interwoven. There is also a renewed interest in "holism" - the notion that mind and body are indivisible, and that to treat illness, the whole person, rather than isolated parts, must be taken into account.

It is becoming clear to an increasing number of medical practitioners that it is people, not just cells or organs, who have disease, and that an essential aspect of a person is the way he or she thinks, feels, relates, and behaves. The various treatments categorized as mind and emotion therapies aim to harness the power of thoughts, feelings, and actions in order to influence the biological and structural processes of an individual. Until recently, Western scientists and conventional medical practitioners rarely probed into the nature of consciousness, or questioned its impact on the individual. Frustrated by this situation, many people interested in the subject have begun to turn to the East, where philosophers and health care providers have been examining such questions for thousands of years. The fact that western science and medicine are now beginning to study these traditions promises a rich future for mind-body medicine.
